Abstract

A new approach to photo detection using pixel Hybrid Photon Detectors (pixel-HPD's) has been adopted for the LHCb-RICH detector. These devices use a hybrid pixel detector inside an evacuated photo tube providing high-precision, low noise detection of Cherenkov radiation. The approach takes advantage of modern CMOS technology offering many advantages over more traditional techniques. These advantages include extremely high sensitivity, low noise and fast readout. A major technological challenge was the encapsulation of a hybrid pixel detector inside a photo detector tube. The fabrication of the HPD tube involves packaging of the pixel detector assembly onto a ceramic carrier to form the photo-anode and the subsequent bake out of the pixel anode under vacuum. Both processes involve high temperatures. A fine pitch solder bump-bonding technique, which is compatible with the manufacture of hybrid photo detectors, has been developed. The technology and the tests used for qualifying the new process for pixel-HPD production are described. More than 40 pixel detector assemblies have been produced with almost all showing Index Terms--Photodetectors, radiation detectors.

Abstract

A pixel hybrid photon detector (HPD) has been developed according to the specific requirements of the LHCb ring imaging Cherenkov counters. This detector comprises a silicon pixel detector bump-bonded to a binary readout chip to achieve a fast 25-ns readout and a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The detector performance was characterized by varying the pixel threshold, the tube high voltage, the silicon bias voltage, and the determination of the photoelectron detection efficiency. Furthermore, accelerated ageing and high pixel occupancy tests were performed to verify the long-term stability. The results were obtained using Cherenkov light and a fast pulsed light emitting diode. The results of all measurements agree with the expectations and fulfill the design goals. The primary aim of weaning is to gradually replace natural protein from breast milk or standard infant formula with solids containing equivalent phenylalanine (Phe). In addition, a Phe-free second stage L-amino acid supplement is usually recommended from around 6months to replace Phe-free infant formula. Our aim was to assess different weaning approaches used by health professionals across Europe. Methods: A cross sectional questionnaire (survey monkey(R)) composed of 31 multiple and single choice questions was sent to European colleagues caring for inherited metabolic disorders (IMD). Centres were grouped into geographical regions for analysis. Results: Weaning started at 17-26weeks in 85% (n=81/95) of centres, >26weeks in 12% (n=11/95) and<17weeks in 3% (n=3/95). Infant's showing an interest in solid foods, and their age, were important determinant factors influencing weaning commencement. 51% (n=48/95) of centres introduced Phe containing foods at 17-26weeks and 48% (n=46/95) at >26weeks. First solids were mainly low Phe vegetables (59%, n=56/95) and fruit (34%, n=32/95).A Phe exchange system to allocate dietary Phe was used by 52% (n=49/95) of centres predominantly from Northern and Southern Europe and 48% (n=46/95) calculated most Phe containing food sources (all centres in Eastern Europe and the majority from Germany and Austria). Some centres used a combination of both methods.A second stage Phe-free L-amino acid supplement containing a higher protein equivalent was introduced by 41% (n=39/95) of centres at infant age 26-36weeks (mainly from Germany, Austria, Northern and Eastern Europe) and 37% (n=35/95) at infant age>1y mainly from Southern Europe. 53% (n=50/95) of centres recommended a second stage Phe-free L-amino acid supplement in a spoonable or semi-solid form. The primary aim of weaning is to gradually replace natural protein from breast milk or standard infant formula with solids containing equivalent phenylalanine (Phe). In addition, a Phe-free second stage L-amino acid supplement is usually recommended from around 6 months to replace Phe-free infant formula. Our aim was to assess different weaning approaches used by health professionals across Europe. METHODS: A cross sectional questionnaire (survey monkey®) composed of 31 multiple and single choice questions was sent to European colleagues caring for inherited metabolic disorders (IMD). Abstract

Condensation of pre-osteogenic, or pre-chondrogenic, cells is the first of a series of processes that initiate skeletal development. We present a validated, novel, three-dimensional agent-based model of in vitro intramembranous osteogenic condensation. The model, informed by system heterogeneity and relying on an interaction-reliant strategy, is shown to be sensitive to 'rules' capturing condensation growth and can be employed to track activity of individual cells to observe their macroscopic impact. It, therefore, makes available previously inaccessible data, offering new insights and providing a new context for exploring the emergence, as well as normal and abnormal development, of osteogenic structures. Of the several stages of condensation we investigate osteoblast 'burial' within the osteoid they deposit. The mechanisms underlying entrapment - required for osteoblasts to differentiate into osteocytes - remain a matter of conjecture with several hypotheses claiming to capture this important transition. Computational examination of this transition indicates that osteoblasts neither turn off nor slow down their matrix secreting genes - a widely held view; nor do they secrete matrix randomly. The model further reveals that osteoblasts display polarised behaviour to deposit osteoid. This is both an important addition to our understanding of condensation and an important validation of the model's utility.

27. Orthogonal patterning of multiple biomolecules using an organic fluorinated resist and imprint lithography

Abstract

The ability to spatially deposit multiple biomolecules onto a single surface with high-resolution while retaining biomolecule stability and integrity is critical to the development of micro- and nanoscale biodevices. While conventional lithographic patterning methods are attractive for this application, they typically require the use of UV exposure and/or harsh solvents and imaging materials, which may be damaging to fragile biomolecules. Here, we report the development of a new patterning process based on a fluorinated patterning material that is soluble in hydrofluoroether solvents, which we show to be benign to biomolecules, including proteins and DNA. We demonstrate the implementation of these materials into an orthogonal processing system for patterning multibiomolecule arrays by imprint lithography at room temperature. We further showcase this method's capacity for fabricating patterns of receptor-specific ligands for fundamental cell studies. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

[EN] Cation-exchange membranes made exclusively from ceramic materials have been synthesized by means of the impregnation of microporous ceramic supports with zirconium phosphate. Changes in the pore size distribution and total pore volume of the supports were provoked by the addition of starch as pore former in the fabrication procedure. This allowed the production of supports with increased effective electrical conductivities and with larger pores available for the zirconium phosphate deposition. An improved functionality for the exchange of cations was given to the ceramic membranes by means of their impregnation with the active particles of zirconium phosphate. The ion-exchange properties of the membranes were increased with further impregnation cycles and the resulting current–voltage curves showed a similar shape to that typical of commercial polymeric ion-exchange membranes. The production of ionexchange membranes with increased chemical and radiation stability will broaden their applicability for the treatment of specific industrial waste waters, which are very aggressive for the current commercial ion-exchange membranes.

A test-beam study was performed at CERN with a Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) prototype using three pixel Hybrid Photon Detectors. Results on the photon yield and Cherenkov angle resolution are presented here, for the Aerogel radiator and also for reference runs taken with Nitrogen radiator.

Abstract

Background The role of fibrocytes in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD) is unknown. We sought to enumerate blood and tissue fibrocytes in COPD and determine the association of blood fibrocytes with clinical features of disease. Methods Utilizing flow cytometry to identify circulating, collagen type 1+ cells, we found two populations: (i) CD45+ CD34+ (fibrocytes) and (ii) CD45+ CD34− [myeloid-derived suppressor cell ( MDSC)-like fibrocytes] cells in stable COPD ( n = 41) and control ( n = 29) subjects. Lung resection material from a separate group of subjects with ( n = 11) or without ( n = 11) COPD was collected for tissue fibrocyte detection. We examined circulating fibrocyte populations for correlations with clinical parameters including quantitative computed tomography (q CT) and determined pathways of association between correlated variables using a path analysis model. Results Blood and tissue fibrocytes were not increased compared to control subjects nor were blood fibrocytes associated with lung function or q CT, but were increased in eosinophilic COPD. Myeloid-derived suppressor cell-like fibrocytes were increased in COPD compared to controls [2.3 (1.1-4.9), P = 0.038]. Our path analysis model showed that collagen type 1 intensity for MDSC-like fibrocytes was positively associated with lung function through associations with air trapping, predominately in the upper lobes. Conclusion We have demonstrated that two circulating populations of fibrocyte exist in COPD, with distinct clinical associations, but are not prevalent in proximal or small airway tissue. Blood MDSC-like fibrocytes, however, are increased and associated with preserved lung function through a small airway-dependent mechanism in COPD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The LHCb detector is a single arm spectrometer designed to exploit the large number of b-hadrons produced at the LHC in order to make precision studies of CP asymmetries and of rare decays in the B-meson system. It is therefore essential for the experiment that the detector configuration includes a particle identification system with high separation power between kaons and pions. We will present in this note the engineering solutions for the lightweight, high precision Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector, RICH2, of the spectrometer. The design is built around a large space frame used as a high stability support for the optical system and as a supporting structure for the magnetic shielding needed for the photon detectors. All material not essential for the operation of the detector is located outside the acceptance of the spectrometer. The space frame also defines the Cherenkov gas volume.

41. Family Support and Pregnancy Behavior among Women in Two Border Mexican Cities

Abstract

Given that, on average, immigrant Mexican women in the United States have relatively low socioeconomic status, researchers have sought explanations for their favorable pregnancy outcomes. Strong family support in the Mexican culture has been proposed as a contributing factor that is protective of maternal and child health. However, family support may not be determined exogenously. Complex associations may exist between family support, the circumstances of a pregnancy, and whether the pregnancy was planned or welcomed. In this article, we present findings from a qualitative exploratory study among pregnant women in two Mexican border cities. The goals of this article are to examine the extent to which family and partner support are provided to pregnant women in the Mexican culture, whether such support appears to influence their health-promoting behaviors during pregnancy, and the circumstances under which such support is denied to women. Findings suggest that women who do not cohabit with the baby's father predating their pregnancy are less likely to welcome the pregnancy and to receive family support. The influence of family support on maternal behavior and health was stronger amongprimiparous women than among women who have had a previous pregnancy., Dado que, en promedio, el nivel socioeconómico de las mujeres inmigrantes mexicanas en Estados Unidos es relativamente bajo, investigadores han tratado de explicar el alto porcentaje de nacimientos que presentan. Se ha propuesto que la presencia de un fuerte apoyo familiar en la cultura mexicana es uno de los factores que protegen la salud materna e infantil. Sin embargo, es posible que el apoyo familiar no se genere de forma exógena. Pueden existir asociaciones complejas entre el apoyo familiar, las circunstancias en que ocurre el embarazo, y si éste fue planeado o bien recibido. En este artículo presentamos los resultados de un estudio cualitativo exploratorio que se condujo entre mujeres embarazadas en dos ciudades fronterizas mexicanas. Los objetivos de este artículo fueron examinar hasta qué punto la familia y la pareja proporcionan apoyo a mujeres embarazadas en la cultura mexicana, si tal apoyo parece influir en comportamientos que pudieran afectar la salud durante el embarazo, y las circunstancias en que ese apoyo se les niega a las mujeres. Los resultados sugieren que las mujeres que no cohabitan con el padre del bebé antes del embarazo tienen menor tendencia a desear el embarazo y reciben menos apoyo familiar. La influencia del apoyo familiar sobre el comportamiento y la salud materna fue más fuerte entre las mujeres primíparas que entre las mujeres que han tenido embarazos anteriormente.

Abstract

The Western Australia's Premier's Collaborative Research Program (PCRP) project 'Characterising Treated Wastewater for Drinking Purposes Following Reverse Osmosis Treatment' commenced in October 2005, to determine the potential risks of replenishing drinking water aquifers with MF/RO treated secondary wastewater from Perth?s wastewater treatment plants. A brief report on the project won the Michael Flynn Award for the best poster paper at Ozwater 10. The results included those published in Water, February 2010, by Rodriguez et al, entitled Efficiency of RO for removal of Chemical Contaminants. Consequently, this version has been drafted to cover the other aspects of the study, principally the identification of suitable indicators which could be used to validate treatment performance.

Abstract

We report on efficient spin polarized injection and transport in long (102 nm) channels of Alq3 organic semiconductor. We employ vertical spin valve devices with a direct interface between the bottom manganite electrode and Alq3, while the top-electrode geometry consists of an insulating tunnel barrier placed between the "soft" organic semiconductor and the top Co electrode. This solution reduces the ubiquitous problem of the so-called ill-defined layer caused by metal penetration, which extends into the organic layer up to distances of about 50-100 nm and prevents the realization of devices with well-defined geometry. For our devices the thickness is defined with an accuracy of about 2.5 nm, which is near the Alq3 molecular size. We demonstrate efficient spin injection at both interfaces in devices with 100- and 200-nm-thick channels. We solve one of the most controversial problems of organic spintronics: the temperature limitations for spin transport in Alq3 -based devices. We clarify this issue by achieving room-temperature spin valve operation through the improvement of spin injection properties of both ferromagnetic/ Alq3 interfaces. In addition, we discuss the nature of the inverse sign of the spin valve effect in such devices proposing a mechanism for spin transport. © 2008 The American Physical Society.
