Building on qualitative interviews, this article brings into view how New Delhi university students organized improvised forms of Covid relief during the Delta coronavirus wave in the spring of 2021. Responding to a lack of care due to state negligence and a breakdown of public and private healthcare infrastructure, students coordinated access to crucial resources such as masks, other personal protective equipment and even oxygen through the use of social media, existing social networks, and practices developed in earlier moments of organizing. Using the lenses of improvisation, rehearsal and repair, this article documents how students improvised informal Covid relief. Conceptually, the article offers the framework of transposition to look at how improvisational capacity in a social network was shifted from one crisis to the next. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article investigates why it is so difficult for women to succeed in politics in India, and it analyses this from a grassroots perspective in a slum in New Delhi. Based on longitudinal ethnographic research, I explore and compare in-depth the political trajectories of two women activists and examine why, despite being successful leaders of women and allied with male political 'godfathers', they have ended up leaving grassroots activism altogether. I show that both women were first pulled into political activism by NGOs working on women's empowerment, that both later allied with male politicians to help draw 'the women's vote' and that both women's respective success largely rested on their concern with so-called women's causes. However, neither of them was able to build up their own patronage networks, which is necessary to gain an independent political standing in politics. They remained dependent on their male political mentors and on family support; losing one or both of these instigated their respective exits from activism and politics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent advancements in the global production networks (GPNs) literature seek to better emphasize the role of finance by identifying where and how global financial networks (GFNs) intersect with GPNs. Financial centers (FCs) operate as key sites for articulating financial convergence, understood as the merging of financial and nonfinancial sectors enacted by cross-sectoral investments. Yet, how such entanglement both feeds on and impacts intercity networks, affecting metropolitan hierarchies, remains largely overlooked. Using a novel data set of 12,147 intersectoral, cross-border and domestic merger and acquisition deals involving finance and insurance firms throughout the period of 2000–20, this article unpacks the sectoral dynamics that underpin the intersection of GFNs with GPNs at the city level in India, the fifth largest economy in the world. Our longitudinal and multiscalar analysis demonstrates how uneven patterns of financial convergence, structured around the rising entanglement between finance and information technology (IT), have reshaped intercity networks and affected the landscape of FCs in India. If Mumbai remains India's financial capital, Bangalore and New Delhi gained power in domestic and international flows, well ahead of other Indian cities. The article emphasizes how the IT firms, as recipients of transnational investments, and central governments, through direct interventions and state-hybrid investors, operate as key drivers in articulating GFNs with GPNs through intercity networks, changing urban geographies of finance, raising methodological and conceptual questions for future research on financial geography. What does it mean to inhabit? Our many selves find dimensionality through time and in place. This is complicated through the event of mass migration and trauma. One is continuously mapped through a locating of interiority. Within this essay, Nayar traces the birth and evolution of place as interior, and the genesis of her hybrid, constructed photographic process. Through the lens of India's 1947 Partition, a trajectory of trauma and the ways in which memory functions over time is traced and translated through a family's resettlement home in New Delhi. Built by her maternal grandfather, a refugee and psychiatrist from East Bengal, this locus in Nayar's memory sheds light on how one may understand the many intersections of belonging and place. Home is found in habitation, that of desire and the awakening of the Mother. In this way, attachment theory, Winnicott's transitional object, and the uncanny are touchstones for an internal mapping of psychic space. Since it is no longer part of the Soviet Union, Armenia has found itself in the position of being able to choose its partners independently. This was largely determined by proximity relations, by historical ones with Russia, and by the places where the emigration of Armenia’s own people took place. Beyond that, it is placed in conditions of choice between cooperation with some actors rather than others. In this sense, Armenia has started dialogue and trade relations with two Asian giants, China and India. The article proposes to recap the relations between these countries, paying attention to the factors that could allow a triangular cooperation rather than a competition.

Background: Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (GTBH) associated with the University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) is one of the largest hospitals associated with a medical college in the National Capital of Delhi, India. The Department of Neurosurgery was initially established here in 1997, but since its inception, has made rapid strides in terms of infrastructure and quality of patient care. Objective: The main objective of this article is to depict the history and path of progress of the Neurosurgery Department, from its inception to its present status, along with the inherent and existing challenges in running the department. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis from the time the department was established to its present status was done. The improvement of infrastructure, increase in patient inflow over the years, the number of procedures related to different subspecialties, and existing challenges along with the scope of further improvement were analyzed. Results: There has been a significant upgradation of infrastructure more so in the last 5 years. Both indoor and outdoor patient attendance has increased over the years along with steady significant growth of the number of elective and emergency procedures. However, despite the progress, significant challenges hampering optimal patient care still remain to be overcome. Conclusion: The department right now is providing satisfactory patient care with absolutely no financial burden to the patients. Neurosurgery academic residency has recently resumed, and a wide range of neurosurgical conditions are being successfully treated. The onset of the second wave of COVID-19 devastated many countries worldwide. Compared with the first wave, the second wave was more aggressive regarding infections and deaths. Numerous studies were conducted on the association of air pollutants and meteorological parameters during the first wave of COVID-19. However, little is known about their associations during the severe second wave of COVID-19. The present study is based on the air quality in Delhi during the second wave. Pollutant concentrations decreased during the lockdown period compared to pre-lockdown period (PM2.5: 67 µg m−3 (lockdown) versus 81 µg m−3 (pre-lockdown); PM10: 171 µg m−3 versus 235 µg m−3; CO: 0.9 mg m−3 versus 1.1 mg m−3) except ozone which increased during the lockdown period (57 µg m−3 versus 39 µg m−3). The variation in pollutant concentrations revealed that PM2.5, PM10 and CO were higher during the pre-COVID-19 period, followed by the second wave lockdown and the lowest in the first wave lockdown. These variations are corroborated by the spatiotemporal variability of the pollutants mapped using ArcGIS. During the lockdown period, the pollutants and meteorological variables explained 85% and 52% variability in COVID-19 confirmed cases and deaths (determined by General Linear Model). The results suggests that air pollution combined with meteorology acted as a driving force for the phenomenal growth of COVID-19 during the second wave. In addition to developing new drugs and vaccines, governments should focus on prediction models to better understand the effect of air pollution levels on COVID-19 cases. Policy and decision-makers can use the results from this study to implement the necessary guidelines for reducing air pollution. After independence, early decades in the Indian capital city were marked by ceremonials, demonstrations and politico-religious addresses. The enthusiasm of the nascent state trying to forge a shared public sphere was dampened by voices of dissent from different opposition groups. These voices took the form of demonstrations and sit-ins in New Delhi, especially around the Parliament Street. Thus, challenging elected government's use of space for functional and ceremonial purposes through such acts. However, the government, in order to contain protesting publics, could not continue to deploy the measures of colonial crowd control, and had to come up with means suitable for its democratic setup. Over years these contestations regarding defining use of public spaces between state and public(s) resulted in the development of guidelines and defining of designated sites of protest. In this view, the purpose of this paper is to contribute toward understanding of New Delhi's space post-1947 and explain how certain demonstrations led to shaping of the government's approach regarding protest sites. The same will be done by bridging the gap between spatial and socio-cultural theorists to study the capital city beyond its architectural grandeur and theoretical claims about public space. Overall, the paper is organized into four parts: the first section explores the idea of public space in the national capital with focus on importance of the Parliament House; the second and third sections study specific sites like Boat Club, Ramlila Maidan and Jantar Mantar in association with protests like JP Movement; and the final part looks at the evolution of government guidelines and the emergence of contained protest sites. This study provided survey data on counselling psychology professionals in New Delhi and compares it to available data on the profession in Punjab, in order to identify areas of similarity and difference. A national portrait of counselling psychology in India requires understanding what characteristics and practices are truly common across the country and what are relatively unique to specific parts of India. Information provided by this study also contribute objective information to help advance program accreditation standards, training curriculum, governmental regulation, and public awareness. National Capital Territory of Delhi and its satellite cities suffer from poor air quality during the post-monsoon months of October–November. In this study, a novel attempt is made to estimate the contribution of different emission sources (industrial, residential, power generation, transportation, biomass burning, photochemical production, lateral transport, etc.) towards the criteria air pollutant carbon monoxide (CO) concentration over North India. Multiple simulations of the WRF-Chem model with a tagged tracer approach with different inputs (6 anthropogenic emission inventories and 3 biomass burning emission inventories) were used. The model performance was evaluated against the MOPITT retrieved CO surface concentration. Analysis of model simulated CO over North India suggests that anthropogenic emissions contribute around 32–49% to surface CO concentration while crop residue burning contributes 27–44% of which 80% originates from Punjab. For Delhi, the contribution from anthropogenic sources is dominant (53–77%) of which 10–28% is from the domestic sector and 14–55% is from the transport sector. Agricultural waste burning contributes about 15–30% to Delhi's surface CO concentration (of which 75% originates from Punjab). Crop residue burning emission is a chief source of CO over Punjab with a contribution of about 56–76%. The results suggest that industrial, transport, and domestic sector activities are more responsible for increased CO levels over New Delhi and surrounding regions than crop residue burning over Punjab. Furthermore, critical meteorological parameters like 10 m wind speed, boundary layer height, 2 m temperature, total precipitation, and relative humidity were evaluated against CO concentration to understand their impact on CO distribution. Results conclude that deteriorating air quality over the North Indian region is caused by a combination of prevailing meteorological factors (such as slow winds, shallow mixing layer, and cold temperatures) and man-made emissions. There is a growing understanding that cultural heritage needs to be understood as a "common good", pivotal to the sustainable development of communities. Cultural goods create multiple value streams for stakeholder groups whose interests and objectives often collide, leading to governance failures. The management of cultural goods can be seen as a collective action problem arising from the interaction of numerous actors. In the first part, the article highlights the importance of analyzing cultural heritage sites and areas as common goods. Within this context, I highlight why collaborative processes of decision-making and planning are crucial for the sustainable conservation of heritage resources and tourism management. In the second section, the paper applies the Institutional Analysis and Development—Network of Adjacent Action Situations (IAD-NAAS) framework to explore collective action dilemmas at Nizamuddin Basti in New Delhi. Application of the framework allows one to explore interrelated governance dilemmas by understanding stakeholder dynamics within governance action situations with interdependent outcomes. The paper concludes with a suggestive framework for a cultural collaborative process keeping the cultural identity of residents as the focal point. While the IAD-NAAS framework is useful in diagnosing the contending interests and their consequences, the IAD framework could also be considered a starting point to define a framework for a collaborative process. While academic research has established the need and importance of community participation in decision-making for cultural heritage tourism (CHT), there is still a lacuna in our knowledge when it comes to understanding what are the perspectives and motivations of people to participate in collaborative governance; thus, policymaking suffers from a lack of knowledge on how to effectively motivate and engage communities in heritage tourism management. Participatory approaches often focus on the management of various stakeholders without emphasising enough the understanding of practical and ideological factors that affect their participation. This study seeks to fill this gap in knowledge by attempting to understand residents' attitudes and motivation towards participating in collaborative decision-making for cultural heritage tourism in their area. The objective of the study is twofold: (1) to identify residents' attitudes towards CHT in their area and (2) to understand residents' motivation for participating in participatory governance of CHT. The attitudes and motivations of the residents are looked at from a Weberian lens of formal and substantive rationality and it is established that residents are affected by both economic and non-economic factors in their support for tourism activities in the areas as well as to participate in collaborative decision-making. The study adopts a qualitative approach to study two heritage precincts of New Delhi, India. While the findings are based on the case study areas, they can be used to understand communities of other developing nations as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
