1. Phenology of Caulerpa taxifolia and temporal dynamics of its epibiontic meiofauna in the port of Malinska (Croatia, northern Adriatic Sea)

Abstract

The qualitative and quantitative composition of epibiontic meiofauna were studied in the C. taxifolia settlement recently recorded in the Malinska port (Krk Island, northern Adriatic Sea). The samples were taken monthly, from May 1998 till June 1999 covering the complete life cycle of C. taxifolia. In total, 14 meiofaunal taxa were recorded. The meiofauna assemblage was characterized by the dominance of Copepoda (58%), the subdominant position of Nematoda (25%), and the low single participation of other taxa. The results of monthly monitoring indicated a seasonal trend in meiofaunal distribution. The beginning of the summer was a period of a low meiofaunal abundance (139 ind. sample-1), and also a start of its exponential increase. The autumn was characterized by a fairly high abundance (~1000-1500 ind. sample-1) and moderate variation of the constituent taxa levels. During the winter exponential growth (to about 10000 ind. sample-1) and high faunal diversity was detected. In subsequent months meiofaunal abundance reached over 19.000 ind. sample-1 - remaining extremely high until May when C. taxifolia fronds disappeared. The increase of meiofaunal abundance was positively correlated with the increase of the algal frond´s length during the summer-autumn period, and with the increasing quantity of sediment particles and detritus accumulated on algal fronds during the C. taxifolia vegetative cycle. This study has shown that C. taxifolia can provide a suitable habitat for numerous benthic invertebrates, although it is known as a species that reduces the benthic biodiversity.

Abstract

The tropical green alga Caulerpa taxifolia in the Mediterranean has spread steadily since its introduction in 1984. At the end of 2000, approximately 131 km2 of benthos had been colonized in 103 independent areas along 191 km of coastline in six countries (Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Croatia and Tunisia). Large regions neighboring the invaded areas appear favorable to further colonization, and there is thus no reason to believe that spreading will slow down in the years to come.

Abstract

The creation and destiny of reference collections deposited at the marine research station in Rovinj (founded in 1891) are described. By the end of the World War II collections and scientific equipment were transported to Italy and the Institute was demolished. At present in the institution now named Center for Marine Research zoological collections comprising 1160 species and 4520 lots, and herbarium of about 400 taxa/1850 herbarium sheets and samples are deposited., Opisuju se stvaranje i sudbina referentnih zbirki morske istraživačke postaje u Rovinju osnovane 1891. godine. Potkraj Drugog svjetskog rata zbirke i znanstvena oprema su preneseni u Italiju, a zgrada Instituta je oštećena. U današnjem Centru za istraživanje mora zoološka zbirka sadrži oko 4520 uzoraka 1160 vrsta i herbarij sa približno 400 svojti/1850 herbarskih jedinica.

4. Taxonomic composition, depth distribution and phytogeographic characteristics of marine benthic macroflora from Rijeka Bay (north Adriatic Sea, Croatia)

Abstract

Here we give a review of the taxonomic composition, depth distribution, and phytogeographic characteristics of benthic marine macroflora from Rijeka Bay. It is based on our research from 1950 to 2000, and on both a nomenclatural and a taxonomic critical revision of previous records from that region. The list contains 380 taxa belonging to the Rhodophyta (231), the Ochrophyta (74), the Chlorophyta (71) and the Magnoliophyta (4), 338of which are at the species level while 42 are infraspecific (4 subspecies, 31 varieties, 7 forms, 1 stage). The established ratio between the number of Rhodophyta and Phaeophyceae (R/P Index; FELDMANN, 1937) was 3.1, and the relation between the number of Rhodophyta + Chlorophyta and Phaeophyceae (R+C/P Index; CHENEY, 1977) was 4.1. Both the above values show the subtropical character of benthic macroalgal flora in the surveyed area. With regard to its origin, the Rijeka Bay benthic flora is not homogenous. It comprises floral elements from several phytogeographic regions. Predominant by number and percentage are Atlantic (86 taxa – 23%), subcosmopolitan (75 taxa – 20%), Mediterranean (70 taxa – 19%), and Indo-Atlantic (53 taxa – 14%) floral elements. Other phytogeographic regions contribute only 96 taxa to Rijeka marine algal flora – 25% of total the 380 taxa recorded. Only 3 species (1%) are included in the category of Adriatic endemic (Polysiphonia adriatica, Feldmannia irregularis var. Lebeliides and Fucus virsoides). The analysis of benthic flora in relation to littoral bionomical zones reveals that the highest number of algal taxa is recorded in the upper infralittoral zone (325), and the lowest (the supralittoral excepted) in the eulittoral zone (109). With regard to depth distribution, marine benthic flora of Rijeka Bay consists of a very small number of algal taxa which live only deeper than 6 m (36 taxa – 9.4%), in comparison with the relatively high number of algal taxa which live only as far as 6 m deep (153 taxa – 40.3%), and, U radu se iznosi popis bentoskih morskih makroalga i morskih cvjetnica Riječkog zaljeva koji se temelji na istraživanjima izvedenim od 1950. do 2000. godine, te starijim i novijim bibliografskim podacima. Popis sadrži ukupno 376 svojte bentoskih alga (231 svojti ili 60,8% Rhodophyta, 74 svojte ili 19,5% Ochrophyta, 71 svojta ili 18,7% Chlorophyta) i 4 vrste morskih cvjetnica (Magnoliophyta). Prema vrijednostima kvocijenata R/P (FELDMANN, 1937) i R+C/P (CHENEY, 1977) bentoska flora Riječkog zaljeva ima suptropski karakter. U fitogeografskom sastavu brojem i postotkom prevladavaju atlantski (86 svojti ili 22,5%), subkozmopolitski (75 svojte ili 19,8%), mediteranski (70 svojte ili 18,5%) i indo-atlantski (53 svojte ili 14%) florni elementi. Od endemskih jadranskih vrsta zabilježene su samo tri (Polysiphonia adriatica, Feldmannia irregularis var. Lebeliides i Fucus virsoides). Najveći je broj svojti zabilježen u gornjem infralitoralu (325), dosta manje u srednjem (213) i donjem infralitoralu (190), a najmanje (izuzevši supralitoral gdje je određena samo jedna vrsta) u eulitoralu (109). Razmjerno mali broj svojti bentoske flore (36 ili 9,4% od ukupnog broja) živi na većim dubinama od 6 m, u odnosu na razmjerno velikog broja svojti koje žive samo do 6 m dubine (153 ili 40,3%), odnosno svojti koje su zastupljene u obje kategorije (191 ili 50,1%).

Abstract

Fourteen years after the first observation of Caulerpa taxifolia (Valh) C. Agardh in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea, this green alga of tropical origin is now present in five countries (Spain, France, Monaco, Italy and Croatia). By the end of 1997, more than 46 km(2), at depths of between 0 and 50 m, were found to be affected by this expansion. A standardization of the cartographic procedure is proposed here. Such a standardization is necessary to compare maps produced by various organizations from different countries. For a given independent station, it is based on the definition of three levels of colonization:Level I refers to a station where one or several colonies less than 100 m apart cover a total surface area inferior to 1000 m(2):Level II refers to a station where several colonies less than 250 m apart totally cover more than 1000 m(2) with fragments and small colonies dispersed over a surface area inferior to 10 ha;Level III is attained when several large colonies are dispersed over a surface area superior to 10 ha, with a total covered surface of more than 1000 m(2), impossible to map with precision due to its size.For each of these colonization levels, descriptive parameters can be used to precisely describe the situation: covered surface area, dispersion surface (i.e. "affected" zone), estimation of very large affected zones (i.e. "concerned" zones) and the portions of the coastline along which an affected or concerned zone can be found., Quatorze années après la première observation de Caulerpa taxifolia en Méditerranée nord-occidentale, cette algue d'origine tropicale est présente dans cinq pays (Espagne, France, Monaco, Italie et Croatie). À la fin de l'année 1997, plus de 46 km2 de fonds, situés essentiellement entre 0 et 50 m de profondeur, sont concernés à divers degrés par cette invasion. Une standardisation de la représentation cartographique est proposée. L'objectif de cette normalisation est de pouvoir comparer les cartes produites par divers organismes appartenant à plusieurs pays. Elle est basée sur la définition, pour une station donnée, de trois niveaux de colonisation : ¿ - Le niveau I correspond à une station où se développent une ou plusieurs colonies (réparties à moins de 100 m les unes des autres) et couvrant au total une surface inférieure à 1000 m2 ; ¿ - Le niveau II correspond à une station où de nombreuses colonies (réparties à moins de 250 m les unes des autres) couvrent au total plus de 1000 m2 et sont dispersées dans une surface inférieure à 10 ha ; ¿ - Le niveau III correspond à une station où les colonies sont disséminées dans une zone supérieure à 10 ha et pour lesquelles la surface totale couverte (très supérieure à 1000 m2) n'est plus cartographiable avec précision. Pour chaque niveau un ensemble de paramètres descriptifs permet de préciser la situation : surface totale couverte, surface atteinte, estimation des larges surfaces atteintes (ou surface concernée), linéaire de côte devant lequel on trouve des surfaces atteintes ou concernées.
