Journal of the Chester Archaeological Society, 78, 1-21, The paper presents an overview of some attempts to provide a theoretical framework for both the location and interpretation of the number of late prehistoric and Romano-British rural sites within the Mersey Basin region, centred around the theme of marginality. It uses the body of archaeological evidence for the period to look at the issues of climatic and social marginality. The debate on the rural settlement of these periods is focused on the social hierarchy and material culture of the area and whether this was distinctive, both before and after the Roman conquest.

Journal of the Chester Archaeological Society, 77, 115-129, Targeted fieldwalking and excavation on two cropmark enclosures allowed an outline chronology to be established. Finds from Enclosure B suggested that this was the earlier site and might date from the late prehistoric period, while material from Enclosure A suggested occupation during the second century AD but perhaps beginning much earlier. The spread of lithic material across the whole of the southern half of the field implies occupation in this area during the last two millennia BC. The survey of the two sites has also demonstrated the value of combining aerial photographic reconnaissance with targetted field survey work on known cropmark sites.

Journal of the Chester Archaeological Society, 85, 39-82, Although Cheshire contains some of the major saltworks and the earliest purpose-built mechanised textile mills and industrial canals in Britain, study of the industrial period in the county (1750-1900) has been patchy. This thematic overview attempts to redress the balance and especially to highlight the contribution made over the last quarter century by archaeological fieldwork. Of set purpose, it is descriptive rather than analytical. Nevertheless, it is set within a framework of recent developments in methodology and theory, and suggestions are made of possible future research themes.

The aim of this document is to give a initial view of the innovation strategy the project is adopting. The strategy itself will be updated during the project according both to viability evolution (see D11.1), and in relation to outcomes experimented in the pilots. We consider that relationships between project objectives, stakeholders and project activities are the core pillar of STORM innovation strategy. For this reason, we created a relationship map that is providing updated view of dynamic evolution in the innovation strategy. The document is structured into four sections: the first one is to introduce the concept of relationship map, the second analyses the expected outputs also in terms of early outcomes and their potential introducing the approach of a three ways exploitation: Sustainability, Research and Business. Those ways are expected to need specific actions to achieve their goals. In the following section the concept of Mission Oriented Innovation model is addressed and it is going to be used in project further activities in order to monitor each achieved outputs. The last section starts a discussion on a value-based pathway that is going to be a key focus to promote STORM foregrounds for potential buyers or tax payers. I would like to acknowledge here all consortium partners and the Innovation Management Board for being active and supporting during the deliverable preparation.

This resource is a single blog post created as part of the Day of Archaeology initiative. The Day of Archaeology project aimed to provide a window into the daily lives of archaeologists from all over the world. The project asked people working, studying or volunteering in the archaeological world to participate in a 'Day of Archaeology' each year by recording their day and sharing it through text, images or video on the Day of Archaeology blog.The project asked anyone with a personal, professional or voluntary interest in archaeology to get involved, and help highlight the reasons why archaeology is vital to protect the past and inform our futures. The resulting Day of Archaeology project archive demonstrates the wide variety of work the archaeological profession undertakes day-to-day across the globe, and helps to raise public awareness of the relevance and importance of archaeology to the modern world.The first ever Day of Archaeology was held in 2011 and, since then, the project had thousands of archaeologists take part in the event, from those working in the field through to specialists working in laboratories and behind computers. The last Day of Archaeology was on Friday 28th July 2017.

The Centre for Applied Archaeology (CfAA) was commissioned by the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service to undertake an archaeological evaluation on land off Wellington Street, Elton, Bury SD 79583 10525. This land was most recently used for industrial purposes by Milliken industrials Ltd. The program of work consisted of six evaluation trenches located across the study area. These were intended to determine the presence, extent, depth, state of preservation and significance of the archaeological resource to enable informed recommendations to be made for the future treatment of any surviving remains.

The Centre for Applied Archaeology was commissioned by ICIAN Developments Ltd to carry out an archaeological evaluation at the proposed Smithfield Northern Quarter Phase 6 development (centred on NGR SJ 84485 98746). The work comprised the excavation of three trenches across the site to investigate potential structures highlighted in the archaeological desk-based assessment (Nash and Nevell 2012). The trenching revealed that the site was criss-crossed by drains and services, cut into made ground which varied in depth across site. None of the structures highlighted in the desk-based assessment could be identified with any certainty, although there were hints of earlier activity prior to stripping and levelling during the nineteenth century (Mottershead 2009). The only significant structural remains that survived were the remains of concrete pillars and cast iron column bases, presumably part of the wrought iron and glass roof erected in 1854 (Mottershead 2009, 6) of the Smithfield Market

This report presents the results of an archaeological evaluation of the Radcliffe Historic Core area, Bury, (centred SD 797 076; GMHER 354.1) in July 2012. This evaluation excavation was undertaken as part of the Dig Greater Manchester community archaeology project funded by the ten councils forming the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities with Blackburn and Darwin. Two sites were investigated in the historic medieval core of the town and these were situated on the former site of 'Radcliffe Close' mansion, within Close Park, and on an area adjacent to the medieval Radcliffe Tower previously occupied by a row of terraced housing on Church Row. The foundations of the southern elevation of Radcliffe Close, a 19th century factory owner's house, were located in Close Park but the rest of the house had been removed during demolition in the 20th century. Significant remains were located associated with the 19th and early 20th century Church Row north of Radcliffe Tower. An earlier building was also discovered beneath the workers' housing, probably associated with the tower complex.

The Centre for Applied Archaeology was commissioned by Peel Investments (North) Ltd to undertake a Level 2 Building Survey of the Cold War Bunker at Worsley new Hall, Worsley, M28 2LJ. The survey work was carried out in November 2011 by Vicky Nash, Brian Grimsditch and Matthew Bishop and formed part of pre-planning application work as recommended by Planning Policy Statement 5: Planning for the Historic Environment (English Heritage March 2010), paragraphs HE6.1 and HE8.1. A concrete bunker was constructed by the War Office in 1951 as an Anti Aircraft Operations Room (AAOR). In 1958 the Bunker became redundant and was used by the Royal Navy as a food store until the early 1960s. In 1961 the Bunker was purchased by Salford Corporation and used as a joint area control centre with Lancashire County Council. However, after the disbanding of the Civil Defence Corps in 1968 the building was handed over to the Greater Manchester Fire Service and in the early 1990s it was sold to a local gun club and used as a shooting range until 1998. The building was empty at the time of the current survey and due to extensive vandalism both entrances have now been blocked.

The Centre for Applied Archaeology (CfAA) was commissioned by CRE8 Management Ltd to undertake a Level 3 Building Survey of the Pavilion, Old Trafford Cricket Ground, Talbot Road, Trafford, M16 0PX, prior to its redevelopment. The survey work was carried out in January 2012 by Vicky Nash, Matthew Bishop and Dr Michael Nevell and conformed to a brief provided by Dr Andrew Myers, Assistant County Archaeologist for Greater Manchester Archaeological Unit (GMAU).

In 2007 and 2008 the South Trafford Archaeology Group undertook a Level II English Heritage style building survey of Heathlands Farm Cruck Barn, Warburton, Trafford (SJ 7118 9015), as part of the Warburton Archaeological Survey (Site No 13; Nevell 1997; English Heritage 2006). Access was provided by the then owner. Documentary research was undertaken by the Centre for Applied Archaeology. The Warburton Archaeological Survey is a landscape archaeology project run by the South Trafford Archaeology Group with the support of the Centre for Applied Archaeology at the University of Salford and the Altrincham branch of the Workers' Educational Association. Founded in 1996 it is designed to study the landscape development of a single Cheshire township, assessing the existing archaeological data, identify new areas of likely archaeological interest, and to promote research on subjects of regional importance (Brennand with Chitty and Nevell 2006) within the context of Warburton. Heathlands Barn is Grade II listed, UID: 1392565

The Centre for Applied Archaeology (CfAA) were commissioned by Peel Investments (North) Ltd. to undertake an archaeological evaluation and subsequent excavation on the site of Worsley New Hall, Worsley, Greater Manchester (NGR SD 73950 00581). The work comprised of a full area open excavation which spans the entire footprint of the New Halls east wing. The work was carried out in order to determine the presence, extent, depth, state of preservation and significance of the archaeological resource enabling informed recommendations to be made for the future treatment of any surviving remains. This historic environment work was undertaken as part of a planning application, as recommended by the National Planning Policy Framework - NPPF - (Department for Communities and Local Government, March 2012, paragraphs 188 to 192).

The survey work was carried out in July 2011 by Vicky Nash and Dr Michael Nevell and formed part of the pre-planning application work as recommended by Planning Policy Statement 5: Planning for the Historic Environment (English Heritage March 2010), paragraphs HE6.1 and HE8.1.

The survey work was carried out in July 2011 by Brian Grimsditch and Vicky Nash as part of the pre-planning application work as recommended by Planning Policy Statement 5: Planning for the Historic Environment (English Heritage March 2010), paragraphs HE6.1 and HE8.1.

The Centre for Applied Archaeology, University of Salford, were commissioned by Brindley and Taylor Chartered Surveyors on behalf of clients to undertake a PPS5 historic building record of 35 Barnsfold Road, Hawk Green, Marple, Stockport, (centred SJ 9567 8720), a Grade II Listed Building, prior to conversion and extension. 35 Barnsfold Road is a two storey, stone and brick cottage, L-shaped in plan, lying on the southern side of Barnsfold Road, in the Hawk Green area of Marple. The cottage is one of several buildings that form the small hamlet of Barns Fold. The long axis of the L-shape was aligned west to east whilst the short axis was aligned north to south and lay on the south-western side of the complex, forming a single-storey outshut. Internally, the ground floor contained five rooms whilst there were three rooms on the first floor. Six phases of activity were identified on the site, beginning with a possible timber-framed phase from the 16th or early 17th century. The earliest major phase to survive was a two storey stone bay on the west which appeared to be late 17th century in date. An outshut was added to the south of this bay in the 18th century and in the late 18th or early 19th centuries a two storey brick eastern bay was added which may have replaced the earlier timberframed wing. In the late 19th century the out shut was extended in the mid-20th century the property saw significant alterations to the roof structure and flooring.

The Centre for Applied Archaeology at the University of Salford were commissioned by Ascott Design on behalf of clients to undertake a PPG15 building assessment of the cottage, as outlined in English Heritage's Understanding Historic Buildings: A guide to good recording practice (English Heritage 2006). This work was carried out in November 2009 revealing a single surviving cruck truss in the eastern wall of the cottage. This appears to have been a closed truss, and its location to the east of the ground floor hallway in Gothic Lodge suggests that is was always an internal structural feature. Whatever the size of the original timber structure, this was rebuilt in handmade brick, judging from the differing brick sizes over several phases of activity perhaps spanning the late 17th and 18th centuries. The precise date of the Gothic Lodge extension is unclear. However, stylistically, its exuberant gothic styling belongs to the mid-19th century. During the 20th century the Cottage was expanded to the north and west.
