Abstract The upcoming European Spallation Source (ESS) will soon provide the most intense neutrino source in the world. We propose the Search for Hidden Neutrinos at the ESS (SHiNESS) experiment, highlighting its unique opportunities to search for the existence of sterile neutrinos across a wide range of scales: anomalous oscillations at short baselines; non-unitarity mixing in the active neutrino sector; or an excess of events with multiple leptons in the final state, produced in the decay of heavy neutrinos. The baseline design of the detector comprises an active volume filled with 42 ton of liquid scintillator, located 25 m far from the ESS beam target. We show that SHiNESS will be able to considerably improve current global limits for the three cases outlined above. Although in this work we focus on new physics in the neutrino sector, the proposed setup may also be used to search for signals from weakly interacting particles in a broader context.

Abstract In the era of precision measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters, upcoming neutrino experiments will also be sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. KM3NeT/ORCA is a neutrino detector optimised for measuring atmospheric neutrinos from a few GeV to around 100 GeV. In this paper, the sensitivity of the KM3NeT/ORCA detector to neutrino decay has been explored. A three-flavour neutrino oscillation scenario, where the third neutrino mass state ν 3 decays into an invisible state, e.g. a sterile neutrino, is considered. We find that KM3NeT/ORCA would be sensitive to invisible neutrino decays with 1/α 3 = τ 3 /m 3 < 180 ps/eV at 90% confidence level, assuming true normal ordering. Finally, the impact of neutrino decay on the precision of KM3NeT/ORCA measurements for θ 23, Δ m 31 2 $$ \Delta {m}_{31}^2 $$ and mass ordering have been studied. No significant effect of neutrino decay on the sensitivity to these measurements has been found.

Abstract Measuring the neutrino mixing parameter sin2 θ 13 to the sub-percent precision level could be necessary in the next ten years for the precision unitary test of the PMNS matrix. In this work, we discuss the possibility of such a measurement with reactor antineutrinos. We find that a single liquid scintillator detector on a reasonable scale could achieve the goal. We propose to install a detector of ∼ 10% energy resolution at about 2.0 km from the reactors with a JUNO-like overburden. The integrated luminosity requirement is about 150 kton · GW · year, corresponding to 4 years’ operation of a 4 kton detector near a reactor complex of 9.2 GW thermal power like Taishan reactor. Unlike the previous θ 13 experiments with identical near and far detectors, which can suppress the systematics especially the rate uncertainty by the near-far relative measurement and the optimal baseline is at the first oscillation maximum of about 1.8 km, a single-detector measurement prefers to offset the baseline from the oscillation maximum. At low statistics ≲ 10 kton · GW · year, the rate uncertainty dominates the systematics, and the optimal baseline is about 1.3 km. At higher statistics, the spectral shape uncertainty becomes dominant, and the optimal baseline shifts to about 2.0 km. The optimal baseline keeps being ∼ 2.0 km for an integrated luminosity up to 106 kton · GW · year. Impacts of other factors on the precision sin2 θ 13 measurement are also discussed. We have assumed that the TAO experiment will improve our understanding of the spectral shape uncertainty, which gives the highest precision measurement of reactor antineutrino spectrum for neutrino energy in the range of 3–6 MeV. We find that the optimal baseline is ∼ 2.9 km with a flat input spectral shape uncertainty provided by the future summation or conversion methods’ prediction. The shape uncertainty would be the bottleneck of the sin2 θ 13 precision measurement. The sin2 θ 13 precision is not sensitive to the detector energy resolution and the precision of other oscillation parameters.

Abstract Non-standard interactions of neutrinos arising in many theories beyond the Standard Model can significantly alter matter effects in atmospheric neutrino propagation through the Earth. In this paper, a search for deviations from the prediction of the standard 3-flavour atmospheric neutrino oscillations using the data taken by the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. Ten years of atmospheric neutrino data collected from 2007 to 2016, with reconstructed energies in the range from ∼16 GeV to 100 GeV, have been analysed. A log-likelihood ratio test of the dimensionless coefficients ε μτ and ε ττ − ε μμ does not provide clear evidence of deviations from standard interactions. For normal neutrino mass ordering, the combined fit of both coefficients yields a value 1.7σ away from the null result. However, the 68% and 95% confidence level intervals for ε μτ and ε ττ − ε μμ , respectively, contain the null value. Best fit values, one standard deviation errors and bounds at the 90% confidence level for these coefficients are given for both normal and inverted mass orderings. The constraint on ε μτ is among the most stringent to date and it further restrains the strength of possible non-standard interactions in the μ − τ sector.

Abstract We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν 3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on τ 3/m 3 in the ν 3 decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet σ x , and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum σ rel.

Abstract The Coherent Neutrino-Nucleus Interaction Experiment (CONNIE) is taking data at the Angra 2 nuclear reactor with the aim of detecting the coherent elastic scattering of reactor antineutrinos with silicon nuclei using charge-coupled devices (CCDs). In 2019 the experiment operated with a hardware binning applied to the readout stage, leading to lower levels of readout noise and improving the detection threshold down to 50 eV. The results of the analysis of 2019 data are reported here, corresponding to the detector array of 8 CCDs with a fiducial mass of 36.2 g and a total exposure of 2.2 kg-days. The difference between the reactor-on and reactor-off spectra shows no excess at low energies and yields upper limits at 95% confidence level for the neutrino interaction rates. In the lowest-energy range, 50 − 180 eV, the expected limit stands at 34 (39) times the standard model prediction, while the observed limit is 66 (75) times the standard model prediction with Sarkis (Chavarria) quenching factors.

Abstract This article presents the potential of a combined analysis of the JUNO and KM3NeT/ORCA experiments to determine the neutrino mass ordering. This combination is particularly interesting as it significantly boosts the potential of either detector, beyond simply adding their neutrino mass ordering sensitivities, by removing a degeneracy in the determination of ∆ m 31 2 $$ {m}_{31}^2 $$ between the two experiments when assuming the wrong ordering. The study is based on the latest projected performances for JUNO, and on simulation tools using a full Monte Carlo approach to the KM3NeT/ORCA response with a careful assessment of its energy systematics. From this analysis, a 5σ determination of the neutrino mass ordering is expected after 6 years of joint data taking for any value of the oscillation parameters. This sensitivity would be achieved after only 2 years of joint data taking assuming the current global best-fit values for those parameters for normal ordering.

Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

Abstract KM3NeT/ORCA is a next-generation neutrino telescope optimised for atmospheric neutrino oscillations studies. In this paper, the sensitivity of ORCA to the presence of a light sterile neutrino in a 3+1 model is presented. After three years of data taking, ORCA will be able to probe the active-sterile mixing angles θ 14, θ 24, θ 34 and the effective angle θ μe , over a broad range of mass squared difference ∆ m 41 2 $$ \Delta {m}_{41}^2 $$ ∼ [10 −5 , 10] eV2, allowing to test the eV-mass sterile neutrino hypothesis as the origin of short baseline anomalies, as well as probing the hypothesis of a very light sterile neutrino, not yet constrained by cosmology. ORCA will be able to explore a relevant fraction of the parameter space not yet reached by present measurements.

Abstract Neutrino magnetic moment (νMM) is an important property of massive neutrinos. The recent anomalous excess at few keV electronic recoils observed by the XENON1T collaboration might indicate a ∼ 2.2 × 10 −11 μ B effective neutrino magnetic moment ( μ ν eff $$ {\mu}_{\nu}^{\mathrm{eff}} $$ ) from solar neutrinos. Therefore, it is essential to carry out the νMM searches at a different experiment to confirm or exclude such a hypothesis. We study the feasibility of doing νMM measurement with 4 kton fiducial mass at Jinping neutrino experiment (Jinping) using electron recoil data from both natural and artificial neutrino sources. The sensitivity of μ ν eff $$ {\mu}_{\nu}^{\mathrm{eff}} $$ can reach < 1.2 × 10 −11 μ B at 90% C.L. with 10-year data taking of solar neutrinos. Besides the abundance of the intrinsic low energy background 14C and 85Kr in the liquid scintillator, we find the sensitivity to νMM is highly correlated with the systematic uncertainties of pp and 85Kr. Reducing systematic uncertainties (pp and 85Kr) and the intrinsic background (14C and 85Kr) can help to improve sensitivities below these levels and reach the region of astrophysical interest. With a 3 mega-Curie (MCi) artificial neutrino source 51Cr installed at Jinping neutrino detector for 55 days, it could give us a sensitivity to the electron neutrino magnetic moment ( μ ν e $$ {\mu}_{\nu_e} $$ ) with < 1.1 × 10 −11 μ B at 90% C.L. . With the combination of those two measurements, the flavor structure of the neutrino magnetic moment can be also probed at Jinping.

Abstract We propose the operation of LEvEL, the Low-Energy Neutrino Experiment at the LHC, a neutrino detector near the Large Hadron Collider Beam Dump. Such a detector is capable of exploring an intense, low-energy neutrino flux and can measure neutrino cross sections that have previously never been observed. These cross sections can inform other future neutrino experiments, such as those aiming to observe neutrinos from supernovae, allowing such measurements to accomplish their fundamental physics goals. We perform detailed simulations to determine neutrino production at the LHC beam dump, as well as neutron and muon backgrounds. Measurements at a few to ten percent precision of neutrino-argon charged current and neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering cross sections are attainable with 100 ton-year and 1 ton-year exposures at LEvEL, respectively, concurrent with the operation of the High Luminosity LHC. We also estimate signal and backgrounds for an experiment exploiting the forward direction of the LHC beam dump, which could measure neutrinos above 100 GeV.

Abstract In the presence of non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI), a degeneracy exists in neutrino oscillation data, which involves the flipping of the octant of the mixing angle θ 12 and the type of the neutrino mass ordering. In this article, we revisit the status of this degeneracy in the light of recent data on coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS) from the COHERENT experiment. For general relative couplings to up and down quarks, the degeneracy is disfavoured at the 2σ level by the latest data but remains at a higher confidence level. We investigate the requirements of future CEνNS measurements to resolve the degeneracy with high significance. We find that a measurement involving both, electron and muon neutrino flavours and a target with a neutron-to-proton ratio close to 1 is required. For example, an experiment with a silicon target at the European Spallation Source can resolve the degeneracy at more than 4σ for arbitrary relative couplings to up and down quarks.

Abstract We report on an updated sensitivity for proton decay via p → ν ¯ $$ \overline{\nu} $$ K + at large, dual phase liquid argon time projection chambers (LAr TPCs). Our work builds on a previous study in which several nucleon decay modes have been simulated and analyzed [1]. At the time several assumptions were needed to be made on the detector and the backgrounds. Since then, the community has made progress in defining these, and the computing power available enables us to fully simulate and reconstruct large samples in order to perform a better estimate of the sensitivity to proton decay. In this work, we examine the benchmark channel p → ν ¯ $$ \overline{\nu} $$ K +, which was previously found to be one of the cleanest channels. Using an improved neutrino event generator and a fully simulated LAr TPC detector response combined with a dedicated neural network for kaon identification, we demonstrate that a lifetime sensitivity of τ /Br (p → ν ¯ $$ \overline{\nu} $$ K +) > 7 × 1034 years at 90% confidence level can be reached at an exposure of 1 megaton · year in quasi-background-free conditions, confirming the superiority of the LAr TPC over other technologies to address the challenging proton decay modes.

Abstract We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination.

Abstract A θ 13 oscillation analysis based on the observed antineutrino rates at the Double Chooz far and near detectors for different reactor power conditions is presented. This approach provides a so far unique simultaneous determination of θ 13 and the total background rates without relying on any assumptions on the specific background contributions. The analysis comprises 865 days of data collected in both detectors with at least one reactor in operation. The oscillation results are enhanced by the use of 24.06 days (12.74 days) of reactor-off data in the far (near) detector. The analysis considers the ν ¯ e $$ {\overline{\nu}}_e $$ interactions up to a visible energy of 8.5 MeV, using the events at higher energies to build a cosmogenic background model considering fast-neutrons interactions and 9Li decays. The background-model-independent determination of the mixing angle yields sin2(2θ 13) = 0.094 ± 0.017, being the best-fit total background rates fully consistent with the cosmogenic background model. A second oscillation analysis is also performed constraining the total background rates to the cosmogenic background estimates. While the central value is not significantly modified due to the consistency between the reactor-off data and the background estimates, the addition of the background model reduces the uncertainty on θ 13 to 0.015. Along with the oscillation results, the normalization of the anti-neutrino rate is measured with a precision of 0.86%, reducing the 1.43% uncertainty associated to the expectation.

Abstract In presence of non standard interactions (NSI), the solar neutrino data is consistent with two solutions, one close to the standard LMA solution with sin2 θ 12 ≃ 0.31 and another with sin 2 θ 12 D ≃ 0.69 = 1 − sin 2 θ 12 $$ {\sin}^2{\theta}_{12}^D\simeq 0.69\left(=1-{\sin}^2{\theta}_{12}\right) $$ . The latter has been called the Dark LMA (DLMA) solution in the literature and essentially brings an octant degeneracy in the measurement of the mixing angle θ 12. This θ 12 octant degeneracy is hard to resolve via oscillations because of the existence of the so-called “generalised mass hierarchy degeneracy” of the neutrino mass matrix in presence of NSI. One might think that if the mass hierarchy is independently determined in a non-oscillation experiment such as neutrino-less double beta decay, one might be able to break the θ 12 octant degeneracy. In this paper we study this in detail in the context of long-baseline experiments (P μμ channel) as well as reactor experiments (P ee channel) and show that if we combine information from both long-baseline and reactor experiments we can find the correct octant and hence value of θ 12. We elaborate the reasons for it and study the prospects of determining the θ 12 octant using T2HK, DUNE and JUNO experiments. Of course, one would need information on the neutrino mass hierarchy as well.

Abstract The Reactor Experiment for Neutrino Oscillation (RENO) experiment has been taking data using two identical liquid scintillator detectors since August 2011. The experiment has observed the disappearance of reactor neutrinos in their interactions with free protons, followed by neutron capture on hydrogen (n-H). Based on 1500 live days of data taken with 16.8 GW th reactors at the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant in Korea, the near (far) detector observes 567690 (90747) electron antineutrino candidate events with the n-H data. This provides an independent measurement of neutrino mixing angle θ 13 and a consistency check on the validity of the result obtained from the data with neutron capture on Gadolinium (n-Gd). Furthermore, it provides an important cross-check on the systematic uncertainties of the n-Gd measurement. Based on a rate-only analysis, we obtain sin2 2θ 13 = 0.086 ± 0.008(stat.) ± 0.014(syst.). The combination of this result with that of n-Gd is also reported.

Abstract The CONNIE experiment is located at a distance of 30 m from the core of a commercial nuclear reactor, and has collected a 3.7 kg-day exposure using a CCD detector array sensitive to an ∼1 keV threshold for the study of coherent neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering. Here we demonstrate the potential of this low-energy neutrino experiment as a probe for physics Beyond the Standard Model, by using the recently published results to constrain two simplified extensions of the Standard Model with light mediators. We compare the new limits with those obtained for the same models using neutrinos from the Spallation Neutron Source. Our new constraints represent the best limits for these simplified models among the experiments searching for CEνNS for a light vector mediator with mass M Z ′ $$ {M}_{Z^{\prime }} $$ < 10 MeV, and for a light scalar mediator with mass M ϕ < 30 MeV. These results constitute the first use of the CONNIE data as a probe for physics Beyond the Standard Model.

Abstract Heavy nearly-sterile neutrinos are a common ingredient in extensions of the Standard Model which aim to explain neutrino masses, like for instance in Type I seesaw models, or one of its variants. If the scale of the new Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs) is sufficiently low, observable signatures can arise in a range of current and upcoming experiments, from the LHC to neutrino experiments. In this article, we discuss the phenomenology of sterile neutrinos in the MeV to GeV mass range, focusing on their decays. We embed our discussion in a realistic mass model and consider the resulting implications. We focus in particular on the impact on the signal of the strong polarisation effects in the beam for Majorana and (pseudo-)Dirac states, providing formulae to incorporate these in both production and decay. We study how the Near Detector of the upcoming Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment can constrain HNL states by searching for their de- cay products inside the detector. We conduct a Monte Carlo background analysis for the most promising signatures, incorporating the detector’s particle identification capabilities, and estimate the experimental sensitivity of DUNE to these particles. We also present an estimate of the ν τ -derived HNL flux at DUNE, currently missing in the literature, which allows us to discuss searches for HNLs at higher masses.

Abstract The European Spallation Source (ESS), presently well on its way to completion, will soon provide the most intense neutron beams for multi-disciplinary science. Fortuitously, it will also generate the largest pulsed neutrino flux suitable for the detection of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CEνNS), a process recently measured for the first time at ORNL’s Spallation Neutron Source. We describe innovative detector technologies maximally able to profit from the order-of-magnitude increase in neutrino flux provided by the ESS, along with their sensitivity to a rich particle physics phenomenology accessible through high-statistics, precision CEνNS measurements.

Abstract As it is very promising to expect a discovery of CP violation in the leptonic sector, the precision measurement of the Dirac CP phase δ CP is going to be one of the key interests in the future neutrino oscillation experiments. In this work, we examine the physics reach of the proposed medium baseline muon decay experiment MOMENT. In order to identify potential bottlenecks and opportunities to improve CP precision in MOMENT, we investigate the effect of statistical error, systematic uncertainties, fraction of the muon beam polarity, and adjusting the baseline length to match the first or second oscillation maximum on the precision measurement of δ CP. We also simulate superbeam experiments T2K, NOνA, T2HK, DUNE and T2HKK in comparison and complementary to MOMENT. To reach the precision of δ CP at 12° or better at 1 σ confidence level, we find it sufficient to combine the data of MOMENT, DUNE and T2HK.

Abstract One of the challenges that must be overcome in order to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy using reactor neutrinos is the theoretical uncertainty in the unoscillated reactor neutrino spectrum: this is one of the reasons why, recently, it was proposed to add a near detector to the JUNO experiment. A model-independent treatment of the spectrum uncertainty will be discussed, as well as the effect that it will have on the final result. Moreover, since the neutrino spectrum depends on the chemical composition of the fuel, the spectra at the near and far detectors will be different, because they will receive neutrinos from different cores. Taking into account the time evolution of the chemical composition of the fuel in the reactor core, it is possible to reconstruct the far detector spectrum from the near detector data. We will show that the method used to reconstruct the spectrum can affect sensitivity to the mass hierarchy, however if the near detector is large enough the difference will be negligible.

We propose the operation of LEvEL, the Low-Energy Neutrino Experiment at the LHC, a neutrino detector near the Large Hadron Collider Beam Dump. Such a detector is capable of exploring an intense, low-energy neutrino flux and can measure neutrino cross sections that have previously never been observed. These cross sections can inform other future neutrino experiments, such as those aiming to observe neutrinos from supernovae, allowing such measurements to accomplish their fundamental physics goals. We perform detailed simulations to determine neutrino production at the LHC beam dump, as well as neutron and muon backgrounds. Measurements at a few to ten percent precision of neutrino-argon charged current and neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering cross sections are attainable with 100 ton-year and 1 ton-year exposures at LEvEL, respectively, concurrent with the operation of the High Luminosity LHC. We also estimate signal and backgrounds for an experiment exploiting the forward direction of the LHC beam dump, which could measure neutrinos above 100 GeV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neutrino magnetic moment (νMM) is an important property of massive neutrinos. The recent anomalous excess at few keV electronic recoils observed by the XENON1T collaboration might indicate a ∼ 2.2 × 10−11μB effective neutrino magnetic moment ( μ ν eff ) from solar neutrinos. Therefore, it is essential to carry out the νMM searches at a different experiment to confirm or exclude such a hypothesis. We study the feasibility of doing νMM measurement with 4 kton fiducial mass at Jinping neutrino experiment (Jinping) using electron recoil data from both natural and artificial neutrino sources. The sensitivity of μ ν eff can reach < 1.2 × 10−11μB at 90% C.L. with 10-year data taking of solar neutrinos. Besides the abundance of the intrinsic low energy background 14C and 85Kr in the liquid scintillator, we find the sensitivity to νMM is highly correlated with the systematic uncertainties of pp and 85Kr. Reducing systematic uncertainties (pp and 85Kr) and the intrinsic background (14C and 85Kr) can help to improve sensitivities below these levels and reach the region of astrophysical interest. With a 3 mega-Curie (MCi) artificial neutrino source 51Cr installed at Jinping neutrino detector for 55 days, it could give us a sensitivity to the electron neutrino magnetic moment ( μ ν e ) with < 1.1 × 10−11μB at 90% C.L.. In the presence of non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI), a degeneracy exists in neutrino oscillation data, which involves the flipping of the octant of the mixing angle θ12 and the type of the neutrino mass ordering. In this article, we revisit the status of this degeneracy in the light of recent data on coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS) from the COHERENT experiment. For general relative couplings to up and down quarks, the degeneracy is disfavoured at the 2σ level by the latest data but remains at a higher confidence level. We investigate the requirements of future CEνNS measurements to resolve the degeneracy with high significance. We find that a measurement involving both, electron and muon neutrino flavours and a target with a neutron-to-proton ratio close to 1 is required. For example, an experiment with a silicon target at the European Spallation Source can resolve the degeneracy at more than 4σ for arbitrary relative couplings to up and down quarks. We report on an updated sensitivity for proton decay via p → ν ¯ K+ at large, dual phase liquid argon time projection chambers (LAr TPCs). Our work builds on a previous study in which several nucleon decay modes have been simulated and analyzed [1]. At the time several assumptions were needed to be made on the detector and the backgrounds. Since then, the community has made progress in defining these, and the computing power available enables us to fully simulate and reconstruct large samples in order to perform a better estimate of the sensitivity to proton decay. In this work, we examine the benchmark channel p → ν ¯ K+, which was previously found to be one of the cleanest channels. Using an improved neutrino event generator and a fully simulated LAr TPC detector response combined with a dedicated neural network for kaon identification, we demonstrate that a lifetime sensitivity of τ /Br (p → ν ¯ K+) > 7 × 1034 years at 90% confidence level can be reached at an exposure of 1 megaton · year in quasi-background-free conditions, confirming the superiority of the LAr TPC over other technologies to address the challenging proton decay modes. Abstract We present Self-Destructing Dark Matter (SDDM), a new class of dark matter models which are detectable in large neutrino detectors. In this class of models, a component of dark matter can transition from a long-lived state to a short-lived one by scattering off of a nucleus or an electron in the Earth. The short-lived state then decays to Standard Model particles, generating a dark matter signal with a visible energy of order the dark matter mass rather than just its recoil. This leads to striking signals in large detectors with high energy thresholds. We present a few examples of models which exhibit self destruction, all inspired by bound state dynamics in the Standard Model. The models under consideration exhibit a rich phenomenology, possibly featuring events with one, two, or even three lepton pairs, each with a fixed invariant mass and a fixed energy, as well as non-trivial directional distributions. This motivates dedicated searches for dark matter in large underground detectors such as Super-K, Borexino, SNO+, and DUNE.

Abstract Metrics of model goodness-of-fit, model comparison, and model parameter estimation are the main categories of statistical problems in science. Bayesian and frequentist methods that address these questions often rely on a likelihood function, which is the key ingredient in order to assess the plausibility of model parameters given observed data. In some complex systems or experimental setups, predicting the outcome of a model cannot be done analytically, and Monte Carlo techniques are used. In this paper, we present a new analytic likelihood that takes into account Monte Carlo uncertainties, appropriate for use in the large and small sample size limits. Our formulation performs better than semi-analytic methods, prevents strong claims on biased statements, and provides improved coverage properties compared to available methods.

Abstract The ANTARES neutrino telescope has an energy threshold of a few tens of GeV. This allows to study the phenomenon of atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance due to neutrino oscillations. In a similar way, constraints on the 3+1 neutrino model, which foresees the existence of one sterile neutrino, can be inferred. Using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from 2007 to 2016, a new measurement of Δm 32 2 and θ 23 has been performed — which is consistent with world best-fit values — and constraints on the 3+1 neutrino model have been derived.

Abstract We study the prospects of detecting muon events at the upcoming Iron CALorimeter (ICAL) detector to be built at the proposed India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) facility due to neutrinos arising out of annihilation of Weakly Interactive Massive Particles (WIMP) in the centre of the earth. The atmospheric neutrinos coming from the direction of earth core presents an irreducible background. We consider 50kt × 10 years of ICAL running and WIMP masses between 10-100 GeV and present 90% C.L. exclusion sensitivity limits on σ SI which is the WIMP-nucleon Spin Independent (SI) interaction cross-section. The expected sensitivity limits calculated for ICAL for the WIMP annihilation in the earth are more stringent than the limits obtained by any other neutrino detector. For a WIMP mass of 52.14 GeV, where the signal fluxes are enhanced due to resonance capture of WIMP in earth due to Fe nuclei, the sensitivity limits, assuming 100% branching ratio for each channel, are: σ SI = 3.43 × 10−45 cm2 for ν μ ν ¯ μ $$ {\overline{\nu}}_{\mu } $$ channel, σ SI = 1.02 × 10−44 cm2 for τ + τ − channel and σ SI = 5.36 × 10−44 cm2 for b b ¯ $$ b\;\overline{b} $$ channel.

Abstract We consider tritium beta decay with additional emission of light pseudoscalar or vector bosons coupling to electrons or neutrinos. The electron energy spectrum for all cases is evaluated and shown to be well estimated by approximated analytical expressions. We give the statistical sensitivity of Katrin to the mass and coupling of the new bosons, both in the standard setup of the experiment as well as for future modifications in which the full energy spectrum of tritium decay is accessible.

Abstract The yields and production rates of the radioisotopes 9Li and 8He created by cosmic muon spallation on 12C, have been measured by the two detectors of the Double Chooz experiment. The identical detectors are located at separate sites and depths, which means that they are subject to different muon spectra. The near (far) detector has an overburden of ∼120 m.w.e. (∼300 m.w.e.) corresponding to a mean muon energy of 32.1 ± 2.0 GeV (63.7 ± 5.5 GeV). Comparing the data to a detailed simulation of the 9Li and 8He decays, the contribution of the 8He radioisotope at both detectors is found to be compatible with zero. The observed 9Li yields in the near and far detectors are 5.51 ± 0.51 and 7.90 ± 0.51, respectively, in units of 10−8 μ −1g−1cm2. The shallow overburdens of the near and far detectors give a unique insight when combined with measurements by KamLAND and Borexino to give the first multi-experiment, data driven relationship between the 9Li yield and the mean muon energy according to the power law Y = Y 0 E μ / 1 GeV α ¯ $$ Y = {Y}_0{\left(\left\langle {E}_{\mu}\right\rangle /1\ GeV\right)}^{\overline{\alpha}} $$ , giving α ¯ = 0.72 ± 0.06 $$ \overline{\alpha} = 0.72 \pm 0.06 $$ and Y 0 = (0.43 ± 0.11) × 10−8 μ −1g−1cm2. This relationship gives future liquid scintillator based experiments the ability to predict their cosmogenic 9Li background rates.

Abstract Dark Matter may reside in sector without Standard Model (SM) gauge interactions. One way in which such a dark sector can still impact SM particles through non-gravitational interactions is via the “photon portal” in which a dark photon kinetically mixes with the ordinary SM photon. We study the implications of this setup for electron recoil events at TEXONO reactor and nuclear recoil events at the COHERENT experiment. We find that the recent COHERENT data rules out previously allowed regions of parameter space favored by the thermal relic hypothesis for the DM abundance. When mapped onto the DM-electron cross section, we find that COHERENT provides the leading direct constraints for DM masses < 30 MeV.

We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination. A θ13 oscillation analysis based on the observed antineutrino rates at the Double Chooz far and near detectors for different reactor power conditions is presented. This approach provides a so far unique simultaneous determination of θ13 and the total background rates without relying on any assumptions on the specific background contributions. The analysis comprises 865 days of data collected in both detectors with at least one reactor in operation. The oscillation results are enhanced by the use of 24.06 days (12.74 days) of reactor-off data in the far (near) detector. The analysis considers the ν ¯ e interactions up to a visible energy of 8.5 MeV, using the events at higher energies to build a cosmogenic background model considering fast-neutrons interactions and 9Li decays. The background-model-independent determination of the mixing angle yields sin2(2θ13) = 0.094 ± 0.017, being the best-fit total background rates fully consistent with the cosmogenic background model. A second oscillation analysis is also performed constraining the total background rates to the cosmogenic background estimates. While the central value is not significantly modified due to the consistency between the reactor-off data and the background estimates, the addition of the background model reduces the uncertainty on θ13 to 0.015. Along with the oscillation results, the normalization of the anti-neutrino rate is measured with a precision of 0.86%, reducing the 1.43% uncertainty associated to the expectation. Abstract We probe for evidence of invisible neutrino decay in the latest NOvA and T2K data. It is seen that both NOvA and T2K data sets are better fitted when one allows for invisible neutrino decay. We consider a scenario where only the third neutrino mass eigenstate ν 3 is unstable and decays into invisible components. The best-fit value for the ν 3 lifetime is obtained as τ 3/m 3 = 3.16 × 10−12 s/eV from the analysis of the NOvA neutrino data and τ 3/m 3 = 1.0×10−11 s/eV from the analysis of the T2K neutrino and anti-neutrino data. The combined analysis of NOvA and T2K gives τ 3/m 3 = 5.01 × 10−12 s/eV as the best-fit lifetime. However, the statistical significance for this preference is weak with the no-decay hypothesis still allowed at close to 1.5σ C.L. from the combined data sets, while the two experiment individually are consistent with no-decay even at the 1σ C.L. At 3σ C.L., the NOvA and T2K data give a lower limit on the neutrino lifetime of τ 3/m 3 is τ 3/m 3 ≥ 7.22 × 10−13 s/eV and τ 3/m 3 ≥ 1.41 × 10−12 s/eV, respectively, while NOvA and T2K combined constrain τ 3/m 3 ≥ 1.50 × 10−12 s/eV. We also show that in presence of decay the best-fit value in the sin2 θ 23 vs. Δm 322 plane changes significantly and the allowed regions increase significantly towards higher sin2 θ 23.

Abstract The OPERA experiment has discovered the tau neutrino appearance in the CNGS muon neutrino beam, in agreement with the 3 neutrino flavour oscillation hypothesis. The OPERA neutrino interaction target, made of Emulsion Cloud Chambers, was particularly efficient in the reconstruction of electromagnetic showers. Moreover, thanks to the very high granularity of the emulsion films, showers induced by electrons can be distinguished from those induced by π 0s, thus allowing the detection of charged current interactions of electron neutrinos. In this paper the results of the search for electron neutrino events using the full dataset are reported. An improved method for the electron neutrino energy estimation is exploited. Data are compatible with the 3 neutrino flavour mixing model expectations and are used to set limits on the oscillation parameters of the 3+1 neutrino mixing model, in which an additional mass eigenstate m 4 is introduced. At high Δm 412 (≳0.1 eV2), an upper limit on sin2 2θ μe is set to 0.021 at 90% C.L. and Δm 412 ≳ 4 × 10− 3 eV2 is excluded for maximal mixing in appearance mode.

Abstract We study the consequences of invisible decay of neutrinos in the context of the DUNE experiment. We assume that the third mass eigenstate is unstable and decays to a light sterile neutrino and a scalar or a pseudo-scalar. We consider DUNE running in 5 years neutrino and 5 years antineutrino mode and a detector volume of 40 kt. We obtain the expected sensitivity on the rest-frame life-time τ 3 normalized to the mass m 3 as τ3 /m 3 > 4.50 × 10−11 s/eV at 90% C.L. for a normal hierarchical mass spectrum. We also find that DUNE can discover neutrino decay for τ3 /m 3 > 4.27 × 10−11 s/eV at 90% C.L. In addition, for an unstable ν3 with an illustrative value of τ3 /m 3 = 1.2 × 10−11 s/eV, the no decay case could get disfavoured at the 3σ C.L. At 90% C.L. the expected precision range for this true value is obtained as 1.71 × 10−11 > τ3 /m 3 > 9.29 × 10−12 in units of s/eV. We also study the correlation between a non-zero τ3 /m 3 and standard oscillation parameters and find an interesting correlation in the appearance and disappearance channels with the mixing angle θ 23. This alters the octant sensitivity of DUNE, favorably (unfavorably) for true θ 23 in the lower (higher) octant. The effect of a decaying neutrino does not alter the hierarchy or CP violation discovery sensitivity of DUNE in a discernible way.
