TAUP 91 covers the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Theoretical and Phenomenological Aspects of Underground Physics, held in Toledo, Spain on September 9-13, 1991. The book focuses on the processes, methodologies, reactions, and transformations involved in underground physics. The selection first offers information on the fundamental issues in particle astrophysics and an overview of the problems related to general cosmology. Neutrino 94

Neutrino'80 held at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture in Erice, was the tenth of a series of International Confer­ ences on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics. It also marked the fiftieth anniversary of the first mention, by Wolfgang Pauli, of a neutral particle emitted in beta decay. The conference occurred at a very propitious time in neutrino physics: the possibility of a non-zero neutrino mass and of neutrino oscillations has obvious implications of great importance in neutrino astrophysics and cosmology, as well as in the grand unified theories. In order to encourage contacts and discussions among the various experts in different branches of neutrino physics and astrophysics, the conference was based only on plenary sessions, and mainly on review talks. Short communications were accepted only if they bore new and unexpected results which could not be covered in the appro­ priate review. I would like to thank the participants for their understanding of this often unpopular rule. I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the members of the International Advisory Committee, to George Marx, Secretary of the on-going International Neutrino Committee, to the rapporteurs and session chairmen. The ARENA Workshop in Zeuthen was the first to combine extensively the fields of acoustic and radio detection techniques for high-energetic particle cascades from cosmic neutrino interactions. The articles in this volume comprise the latest research work which was presented by over 50 speakers from 10 countries. The wide coverage includes: theoretical predictions on fluxes and the potentialities of new techniques, theoretical and experimental results on target material properties, the fundamentals of interactions and cascade simulation, and current experimental results and the most recent neutrino flux limits. The book also considers future plans and experiments for both radio and acoustic methods with the aim of giving the reader an up-to-date overview of this rapidly developing field.

This volume contains detailed articles by theorists and experimentalists in the newly developing field of astroparticle physics. A large variety of topics are covered. These include the role of neutrinos in astroparticle physics, big bang nucleosynthesis, string theory and cosmology.

Neutrinos are the central thread in the study of many aspects of particle physics and astrophysics. Neutrino interactions test the standard electroweak theory and its TeV scale extensions, and examine the structure of the nucleon and of the CKM matrix. Searches for neutrino mass and other intrinsic properties probe new physics at very short distance scales. The weak interactions of neutrinos imply for them a unique role in studying the early universe, the core of the Sun, type II supernovae, and active galactic nuclei, and suggest the possibility of small neutrino masses contributing to the missing matter in the Universe, especially on very large distance scales.

The scientific program of these important proceedings was arranged to cover most of the field of neutrino physics. In light of the rapid growth of interest stimulated by new interesting results from the field, more than half of the papers presented here are related to the neutrino mass and oscillations, including atmospheric and solar neutrino studies. Neutrino mass and oscillations could imply the existence of a mass scale many orders of magnitudes higher than presented in current physics and will probably guide scientists beyond the standard model of particle physics.

Neutrino'96 is indispensable for students and researchers of neutrino physics. It contains up-to-date reviews and discussions on topics such as Solar Neutrino Physics, Neutrino Oscillations, Intrinsic Neutrino Properties, and Neutrino Cosmology and Astronomy.

In recent years, the cross-section between fundamental physics, astrophysics and cosmology has been increasing, both at the theoretical and experimental levels: particle physics experiments, astronomical observations, space satellite data. Such interplay fruitfully influenced research activity setting up Astrofundamental physics.Topics covered both theory and observations, and allowed for different approaches and different lines of research. Topics included are: dark matter, neutrinos in astrophysics, gamma-ray astrophysics, and a section devoted to gravity, cosmology and strings. Each of these topics has matter enough to constitute a course on its own. The interrelation between these topics is important and a source of problems at the frontiers of present knowledge and experimental limits. Latest available data are constraining theory and models in these topics. These lecture notes provide an occasion to review achievements, to confront theory and models with observations and among themselves, to exchange information on the latest developments and to discuss future prospects.

These proceedings will contain both general reviews on particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology and detailed discussions on some specific topics. Particular emphasis is put on: (i) physics and instrumentation in solar neutrino experiments (Chlorine, SAGE, GALLEX, SNO, Borexino, Iodine); (ii) present status and prospects of underwater and Antarctic experiments (Baikal, DUMAND, AMANDA, Nestor/SADCO, NEVOD); (iii) cosmic rays and cosmic ray neutrinos (high energy muons underground, atmospheric neutrinos, supernovae neutrinos); (iv) experiments on neutrino masses and mixings; (v) searches for dark matter and double beta decay.

This volume includes general reviews of recent developments in particle physics, cosmology, solar neutrinos, selected topics in astroparticle theory, new methods and projects in underground physics (such as gallium-germanium solar neutrino detector SAGE, Underground Scintillation Telescope, and EAS array “Carpet”), dark matter and double beta decay searches.

The Franklin symposium reviews the state of experimental neutrino physics, particularly those areas in which the properties of neutrinos are the subject of current research. The primary topics of the symposium are: solar neutrinos, neutrino mass, double-beta decay, neutrino oscillations and supernova neutrinos.

The proceedings of this workshop consideres the prospects for opening up a new window on the universe with the generation of High Energy Neutrino telescopes now under construction or being planned. Potential sources of high energy neutrinos such as binary pulsars, supernovae, and active galactic nuclei are discussed. In particular, the recent model of Stecker and collaborators, in which neutrinos with energies as high as 1000 TeV are produced in measurable quantities in the cores of quasars and other active galaxies is critically reviewed.
