1. Design and optimization of a variable momentum secondary beamline for NP06/ENUBET project

Abstract

La precisione sulla misura della sezione d’urto del neutrino elettronico e muonico è limitata principalmente dalla conoscienza del flusso iniziale. La precisione attuale è dell’ordine del 5 − 10%. Il progetto ENUBET (Enhanced NeUtrino Beam from kaon Tagging) propone una nuova facility in grado di monitorare il fascio di neutrini prodotto da un fascio secondario di mesoni taggando il leptone corrispondente emesso nello stesso decadimento di pro- duzione. Questo tipo di studio pone diverse restrizioni sul fascio secondario, dal quale dipende soprattutto la distribuzione in energia dei neutrini che raggiungono il detector. In questo lavoro di tesi di dottorato si presentano gli studi effettuati per il design e l’ottimizzazione di una beamline a ener- gia modulare (Multi-Momentum Beamline) presso la sezione BE-EA-LE del CERN. Il layout proposto è ottimizzato per il trasporto di mesoni K+ e π+ con momento centrato in 8.5, 6 e 4 GeV/c. Attraverso questa tecnica è possi- bile monitorare l’energia di neutrini nell’area di interesse di esperimenti quali HyperK, T2K e DUNE tramite la stessa configurazione di magneti. Oltre alla modularità, la Multi-Momentum Beamline è caratterizzata da un angolo di produzione che permette un primo filtro dal fondo che raggiungerebbe il tunnel di decadimento. Inoltre, il design è composto da soli elementi già attualmente in uso al CERN. L’impiego di magneti pre-esistenti permette un’analisi quantitativa, oltre che qualitativa delle performance della beam- line oltre a un costo contenuto nell’implementazione. The precision of the measurement of the cross-section of the electronic and muon neutrino is mainly limited by the knowledge of the initial flux. The cur- rent precision is on the order of 5−10%. The ENUBET (Enhanced NeUtrino Beam from kaon Tagging) project proposes a new facility capable of moni- toring the neutrino beam produced by a secondary meson beam by tagging the corresponding lepton emitted in the same production decay. This type of study places several restrictions on the secondary beam, that essentially de- fines the energy spectrum of the neutrinos reaching the far detector. In this Ph.D. thesis work, we present the studies carried out for the design and op- timization of a modular momentum beamline (Multi-Momentum Beamline) at the BE-EA-LE section of CERN. The proposed layout is optimized for the transport of K+ and π+ mesons with momentum centered around 8.5, 6 and 4 GeV/c. Using this beamline, it is possible to monitor the neutrino en- ergy in the area of interest of experiments such as HyperK, T2K, and DUNE through the same configuration of magnets. In addition to modularity, the developed multi-momentum beamline presents remarkable properties such as a very satisfactory neutrino yield, control of the background, and satisfactory beam properties and performance that are all discussed in detail. A special target optimization procedure for maximizing the hadron yield has also been devised. Furthermore, the design is made up of only elements already in use at CERN. The use of pre-existing magnets allows a quantitative as well as qualitative analysis of the performance of the beamline as well as a low cost in the implementation. Finally, a comparison between Monte-Carlo and data for the ENUBINO prototype, tested at CERN’s EAST area is presented.

Abstract

We check the capability of the DUNE neutrino experiment to detect new sources of leptonic CP violation beside the single phase expected in the Standard Model. We illustrate our strategy based on the measurement of CP asymmetries in the case New Physics will show up as Non-Standard neutrino Interactions and sterile neutrino states and show that the most promising one, once the experimental errors are taken into account in both scenarios, is the one related to the $\nu_\mu \to \nu_e$ transition., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We analyze the phenomenological consequences of embedding a flavor symmetry based on the groups A and CP in a supersymmetric framework. We concentrate on the leptonic sector, where two different residual symmetries are assumed to be conserved at leading order for charged and neutral leptons. All possible realizations to generate neutrino masses at tree level are investigated. Sizable flavor violating effects in the charged lepton sector are unavoidable due to the non-universality of soft-breaking terms determined by the symmetry. We derive testable predictions for the neutrino spectrum, lepton mixing and flavor changing processes with non-trivial relations among observables.

Abstract

The Borexino detector measures solar neutrino fluxes via neutrino-electron elastic scattering. Observed spectra are determined by the solar-$\nu_{e}$ survival probability $P_{ee}(E)$, and the chiral couplings of the neutrino and electron. Some theories of physics beyond the Standard Model postulate the existence of Non-Standard Interactions (NSI's) which modify the chiral couplings and $P_{ee}(E)$. In this paper, we search for such NSI's, in particular, flavor-diagonal neutral current interactions that modify the $\nu_e e$ and $\nu_\tau e$ couplings using Borexino Phase II data. Standard Solar Model predictions of the solar neutrino fluxes for both high- and low-metallicity assumptions are considered. No indication of new physics is found at the level of sensitivity of the detector and constraints on the parameters of the NSI's are placed. In addition, with the same dataset the value of $\sin^2\theta_W$ is obtained with a precision comparable to that achieved in reactor antineutrino experiments., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

With their excellent energy resolution, efficiency, and intrinsic radio-purity, cryogenic calorimeters are primed for the search of neutrino-less double beta decay (0nDBD). The sensitivity of these devices could be further increased by discriminating the dominant alpha background from the expected beta-like signal. The CUPID-0 collaboration aims at demonstrating that the measurement of the scintillation light produced by the absorber crystals allows for particle identification and, thus, for a complete rejection of the alpha background. The CUPID-0 detector, assembled in 2016 and now in data-taking, consists of 26 Zn82 Se scintillating calorimeters for about 2 × 1025 0nDBD emitters. In this contribution we present the preliminary results obtained with the detector and the perspectives for a next generation project.

Abstract

Shashlik calorimeters are sampling calorimeters using wavelength shifting fibers running perpendicularly to the scintillating/absorber plates for the light readout. These devices are cost-effective, easy to assemble, and characterized by a good flexibility in terms of energy resolution. On the contrary, the perpendicular optical fiber readout and the resulting fiber bundling to the photosensor pose a strong limitation to the longitudinal segmentation. Recently, the fast development of solid state photosensors allowed for the integration of the readout system directly in the bulk of the calorimeter, opening new possibilities in terms of longitudinal segmentation (SCENTT INFN R D). In an ultra-compact module every single fiber segment is directly connected to a SiPM; the SiPMs are arranged in arrays on custom PCBs and readout by a fast electronics based on waveform digitizers. This detector technology is the baseline option for ENUBET: a 5 year project (2016-2021) funded by the European Research Council aiming to demonstrate the possibility of a complete instrumentation of the decay tunnel of conventional neutrino beam. This technique allows for a ten-fold reduction on the neutrino flux normalization error. In the talk we will present the results and a detailed performance assessment of the novel ultra-compact design obtained with a prototype of longitudinally segmented shashlik calorimeter, readout with SiPMs embedded in the calorimeter bulk. Tests performed at the CERN PST9 beamline in the 1-5 GeV energy range in November 2016 provided results in terms of linearity, energy resolution and e/pi discrimination at various beam angles reproducing the grazing incident conditions typical of neutrino beam decay tunnels. We will also present results from a neutron irradiation campaign of our Silicon Photomultipliers at the INFN-LNL CN accelerator allowing to test neutron fluences of O(10^12/cm^2) using 5 MeV protons on a Be target.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers. The construction of the experiment and, in particular, the installation of all towers in the cryostat was completed in August 2016 and commissioning started in fall 2016. The experiment has completed the pre-operation phase and is currently in data taking. We present here the achievements of CUORE during the commissioning phase and the limit on the 130 Te half-life for the neutrinoless double beta decay that has been released after the first 3 weeks of collected data. Physics results from CUORE-0 will also be updated.

Abstract

We describe the main features of a new and updated version of the program PArthENoPE, which computes the abundances of light elements produced during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. As the previous first release in 2008, the new one, PArthENoPE 2.0, will be soon publicly available and distributed from the code site, http://parthenope.na.infn.it. Apart from minor changes, which will be also detailed, the main improvements are as follows. The powerful, but not freely accessible, NAG routines have been substituted by ODEPACK libraries, without any significant loss in precision. Moreover, we have developed a Graphical User Interface (GUI) which allows a friendly use of the code and a simpler implementation of running for grids of input parameters. Finally, we report the results of PArthENoPE 2.0 for a minimal BBN scenario with free radiation energy density., 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

International audience; Shashlik calorimeters are sampling calorimeters using wavelength shifting fibers running perpendicularly to the scintillating/absorber plates for the light readout. These devices are cost-effective, easy to assemble, and characterized by a good flexibility in terms of energy resolution. On the contrary, the perpendicular optical fiber readout and the resulting fiber bundling to the photosensor pose a strong limitation to the longitudinal segmentation. Recently, the fast development of solid state photosensors allowed for the integration of the readout system directly in the bulk of the calorimeter, opening new possibilities in terms of longitudinal segmentation (SCENTT INFN R &D). In an ultra-compact module every single fiber segment is directly connected to a SiPM; the SiPMs are arranged in arrays on custom PCBs and readout by a fast electronics based on waveform digitizers. Abstract

International audience; With their excellent energy resolution, efficiency, and intrinsic radio-purity, cryogenic calorimeters are primed for the search of neutrino-less double beta decay (0nDBD). The sensitivity of these devices could be further increased by discriminating the dominant alpha background from the expected beta-like signal. The CUPID-0 collaboration aims at demonstrating that the measurement of the scintillation light produced by the absorber crystals allows for particle identification and, thus, for a complete rejection of the alpha background. The CUPID-0 detector, assembled in 2016 and now in data-taking, consists of 26 Zn$^{82}$ Se scintillating calorimeters for about $2 \times 10^{25}$ 0nDBD emitters. In this contribution we present the preliminary results obtained with the detector and the perspectives for a next generation project.

Abstract

We investigate the renormalization group evolution of fermion masses, mixings and quartic scalar Higgs self-couplings in an ${\it extended}$ non-supersymmetric SO(10) model, where the Higgs sector contains the ${\bf 10}_{\rm H}$, ${\bf 120}_{\rm H}$, and ${\bf 126}_{\rm H}$ representations. The group SO(10) is spontaneously broken at the GUT scale to the Pati-Salam group and subsequently to the Standard Model (SM) at an intermediate scale $M_{\rm I}$. We explicitly take into account the effects of the change of gauge groups in the evolution. In particular, we derive the renormalization group equations for the different Yukawa couplings. We find that the computed physical fermion observables can be successfully matched to the experimental measured values at the electroweak scale. Using the same Yukawa couplings at the GUT scale, the measured values of the fermion observables cannot be reproduced with a SM-like evolution, leading to differences in the numerical values up to around 80 %. Furthermore, a similar evolution can be performed for a ${\it minimal}$ SO(10) model, where the Higgs sector consists of the ${\bf 10}_{\rm H}$ and ${\bf 126}_{\rm H}$ representations only, showing an equally good potential to describe the low-energy fermion observables. Finally, for both the extended and the minimal SO(10) models, we present predictions for the three Dirac and Majorana CP-violating phases as well as three effective neutrino mass parameters., Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables. Abstract

Collider signals of heavy Majorana neutrino mass origin are studied in the minimal Left-Right symmetric model, where their mass is generated spontaneously together with the breaking of lepton number. The right-handed triplet Higgs boson $\Delta$, responsible for such breaking, can be copiously produced at the LHC through the Higgs portal in the gluon fusion and less so in gauge mediated channels. At $\Delta$ masses below the opening of the $VV$ decay channel, the two observable modes are pair-production of heavy neutrinos via the triplet gluon fusion $gg \to \Delta \to NN$ and pair production of triplets from the Higgs $h \to \Delta \Delta \to 4N$ decay. The latter features tri- and quad same-sign lepton final states that break lepton number by four units and have no significant background. In both cases up to four displaced vertices may be present and their displacement may serve as a discriminating variable. The backgrounds at the LHC, including the jet fake rate, are estimated and the resulting sensitivity to the Left-Right breaking scale extends well beyond 10 TeV. In addition, sub-dominant radiative modes are surveyed: the $\gamma \gamma$, $Z \gamma$ and lepton flavour violating ones. Abstract

Using the Double Chooz detector, designed to measure the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$, the products of $\mu^-$ capture on $^{12}$C, $^{13}$C, $^{14}$N and $^{16}$O have been measured. Over a period of 489.5 days, $2.3\times10^6$ stopping cosmic $\mu^-$ have been collected, of which $1.8\times10^5$ captured on carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen nuclei in the inner detector scintillator or acrylic vessels. The resulting isotopes were tagged using prompt neutron emission (when applicable), the subsequent beta decays, and, in some cases, $\beta$-delayed neutrons. The most precise measurement of the rate of $^{12}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu)^{12}\mathrm B$ to date is reported: $6.57^{+0.11}_{-0.21}\times10^{3}\,\mathrm s^{-1}$, or $(17.35^{+0.35}_{-0.59})\%$ of nuclear captures. By tagging excited states emitting gammas, the ground state transition rate to $^{12}$B has been determined to be $5.68^{+0.14}_{-0.23}\times10^3\,\mathrm s^{-1}$. The heretofore unobserved reactions $^{12}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\alpha)^{8}\mathrm{Li}$, $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\mathrm n\alpha)^{8}\mathrm{Li}$, and $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\mathrm n)^{12}\mathrm B$ are measured. Further, a population of $\beta$n decays following stopping muons is identified with $5.5\sigma$ significance. Statistics limit our ability to identify these decays definitively. Assuming negligible production of $^{8}$He, the reaction $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\alpha)^{9}\mathrm{Li}$ is found to be present at the $2.7\sigma$ level. Limits are set on a variety of other processes.

Abstract

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable of observing neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, including supernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such as nucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physics motivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for various proposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plants at 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4 sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrino spectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the six oscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from a typical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elastic scattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable information on the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrino energy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400 events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrino samples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. proton decay via the $p\to K^++\bar\nu$ decay channel. The JUNO detector will provide a unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle and astrophysics. Abstract

The European Research Council has recently funded HOLMES, a project with the aim of performing a calorimetric measurement of the electron neutrino mass measuring the energy released in the electron capture decay of 163Ho. The baseline for HOLMES are microcalorimeters coupled to transition edge sensors read-out with rf-SQUIDs, for microwave multiplexing purposes. A promising alternative solution is based on superconducting microwave resonators that have undergone rapid development in the last decade. These detectors, called Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs), are inherently multiplexed in the frequency domain and suitable for even larger-scale pixel arrays, with theoretical high energy resolution and fast response. The aim of our activity is to develop arrays of microresonator detectors for X-ray spectroscopy and suitable for the calorimetric measurement of the energy spectra of 163Ho. Superconductive multilayer films composed by a sequence of pure Titanium and stoichiometric TiN layers show many ideal properties for MKIDs, such as low loss, large sheet resistance, large kinetic inductance, and tunable critical temperature $$T_\mathrm{c}$$ . We developed Ti/TiN multilayer microresonators with $$T_\mathrm{c}$$ within the range from 70 mK to 4.5 K and with good uniformity. In this contribution, we present the design solutions adopted, the fabrication processes, and the characterization results.

Abstract

The authors would like to thank D Allard, A Esmaili, G Fogli, O Mena, K Murase, S Palomares Ruiz, E Parizot, S T Petcov, S Razzaque, D Semikoz, A Yu Smirnov, F L Villante, F Vissani and R Zukanovich Funchal for their support and valuable discussions and suggestions in preparing this Letter of Intent., The main objectives of the KM3NeT Collaboration are (i) the discovery and subsequent observation of high-energy neutrino sources in the Universe and (ii) the determination of the mass hierarchy of neutrinos. These objectives are strongly motivated by two recent important discoveries, namely: (1) the highenergy astrophysical neutrino signal reported by IceCube and (2) the sizable contribution of electron neutrinos to the third neutrino mass eigenstate as reported by Daya Bay, Reno and others. To meet these objectives, the KM3NeT Collaboration plans to build a new Research Infrastructure consisting of a network of deep-sea neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea. A phased and distributed implementation is pursued which maximises the access to regional funds, the availability of human resources and the synergistic opportunities for the Earth and sea sciences community. Three suitable deep-sea sites are selected, namely off-shore Toulon (France), Capo Passero (Sicily, Italy) and Pylos (Peloponnese, Greece). The infrastructure will consist of three so-called building blocks. A building block comprises 115 strings, each string comprises 18 optical modules and each optical module comprises 31 photo-multiplier tubes. Each building block thus constitutes a threedimensional array of photo sensors that can be used to detect the Cherenkov light produced by relativistic particles emerging from neutrino interactions. Two building blocks will be sparsely configured to fully explore the IceCube signal with similar instrumented volume, different methodology, improved resolution and complementary field of view, including the galactic plane. 25. Development of Microwave Superconducting Microresonators for Neutrino Mass Measurement in the Holmes Framework

Abstract

The European Research Council has recently funded HOLMES, a project with the aim of performing a calorimetric measurement of the electron neutrino mass measuring the energy released in the electron capture decay of 163Ho. The baseline for HOLMES are microcalorimeters coupled to transition edge sensors read-out with rf-SQUIDs, for microwave multiplexing purposes. A promising alternative solution is based on superconducting microwave resonators that have undergone rapid development in the last decade. These detectors, called Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs), are inherently multiplexed in the frequency domain and suitable for even larger-scale pixel arrays, with theoretical high energy resolution and fast response. The aim of our activity is to develop arrays of microresonator detectors for X-ray spectroscopy and suitable for the calorimetric measurement of the energy spectra of 163Ho. Superconductive multilayer films composed by a sequence of pure Titanium and stoichiometric TiN layers show many ideal properties for MKIDs, such as low loss, large sheet resistance, large kinetic inductance, and tunable critical temperature Tc. We developed Ti/TiN multilayer microresonators with Tc within the range from 70 mK to 4.5 K and with good uniformity. In this contribution, we present the design solutions adopted, the fabrication processes, and the characterization results.

Abstract

The renewed interest shown in these days towards neutrinoless double beta decay, a lepton number violating process which can take place only if neutrinos are Majorana particles (ν = ν̄) with a nonvanishing mass, is justified by the fact that the Majorana nature of neutrinos is expected in many theories beyond the Standard Model. We also now know, thanks to the neutrino oscillation experiments, that neutrinos are in fact massive, as expected in these theories and not requested in the Standard Model. Moreover, since neutrino oscillation experiments measure only the absolute value of the difference of the square of the neutrino masses, the discovery of neutrinoless double beta decay would help to disentangle questions that still remain unsolved: what is the absolute mass scale of the neutrinos and which mass hierarchy (normal, inverted or quasi-degenerate) is the correct one? The scope of this paper is not only to review the present results reached in the field by the different groups and technologies worldwide, but also to illustrate and comment on the (near and long-term) future strategies that experimentalists are trying to pursue to reach the needed sensitivity required to explore the inverted hierarchy neutrino mass scale. © Indian Academy of Sciences.

Abstract

A new mechanism is suggested for efficient proton acceleration in the GeV energy range; applications to non-conventional high intensity proton drivers and, hence, to low-energy (10-200 MeV) neutrino sources are discussed. In particular we investigate possible uses to explore subdominant $\bar{\nu}_\mu \to \bar{\nu}_e$ oscillations at the atmospheric scale and their CP conjugate. Abstract

Measuring the neutrino mass is one the most compelling issue in particle physics. HOLMES is an experiment funded by the European Research Council for a direct measurement of neutrino mass. HOLMES will perform a precise measurement of the end point of the Electron Capture decay spectrum of 163Ho in order to extract information on neutrino mass with a sensitivity as low as 1 eV. HOLMES, in its final configuration will deploy a 1000 pixel array of low temperature microcalorimeters: each calorimeter consists of an absorber, where the Ho atoms will be implanted, coupled to a Transition Edge Sensor thermometer. The detectors will be kept at the working temperature of ∼70 mK using a dilution refrigerator. In order to gather the required 3 × 1013 events in a three year long data taking with a pile up fraction as low as 10-4, detectors must fulfill rather high speed and resolution requirements, i.e. 10 μs rise time and 4 eV resolution. To ensure such performances with an efficient read out technique for very large detectors array kept at low temperature inside a cryostat is no trivial matter: at the moment, the most appealing read out technique applicable to large arrays of Transition Edge Sensors is rf-SQUID multiplexing. It is based on the use of rf-SQUIDs as input devices with flux ramp modulation for linearisation purposes; the rf-SQUID is then coupled to a super-conductive λ/4-wave resonator in the GHz range, and the modulated signal is finally read out using the homodyne technique.

Abstract

In March 2013, the Nemo Phase-2 tower has been successfully installed at 100 km off-shore Capo Passero (Italy) and 3500 m depth. This 8-floor tower hosts 32 10-inch PMT's. Results from optical background measurements are presented. In particular, the analyzed rates show stable and low baseline values, compatible with the contribution of 40K light emission, with a small percentage of light bursts due to bioluminescence. All these features are a confirmation of the stability and good optical nature of the site.

Abstract

We offer a preliminary exploration of the two sides of the challenge provided by the recent OPERA data on superluminal neutrinos. On one side we stress that some aspects of this result are puzzling even from the perspective of the wild quantum-gravity literature, where arguments in favor of the possibility of superluminal propagation have been presented, but not considering the possibility of such a sizeable effect for neutrinos of such low energies. We feel this must encourage particularly severe scrutiny of the OPERA result. On the other side, we notice that the OPERA result is reasonably consistent with $\mu$-neutrino-speed data previously obtained at FERMILAB, reported in papers of 2007 and 1979. And it is intriguing that these FERMILAB79 and FERMILAB07 results, when combined with the new OPERA result, in principle provide a window on $\mu$-neutrino speeds at different energies broad enough to compare alternative phenomenological models. We test the discriminating power of such an approach by using as illustrative examples the case of special-relativistic tachyons, the case of "Coleman-Glashow-type" momentum-independent violations of the special-relativistic speed law, and the cases of linear and quadratic energy dependence of the speed of ultrarelativistic muon neutrinos. Even just using $\mu$-neutrino data in the range from $\sim$ 3 GeVs to $\sim$ 200 GeVs the special-relativistic tachyon and the quadratic-dependence case are clearly disfavoured. The linear-dependence case gives a marginally consistent picture and the Coleman-Glashow scenario fits robustly the data. Abstract

The OPERA experiment is designed to study the ν μ → ν τ oscillation observing the ν τ appearance in a pure ν μ beam over a base line of 732 km from CERN to Gran Sasso Laboratory. The apparatus consists of a lead/emulsion-film target complemented by electronic detectors and muon spectrometers for muon charge and momentum measurements. The tracking inside the magnets is provide by Bakelite RPC chambers in a large scale application. The commissioning of the RPC system ended in August 2006. The paper present the layout of the RPC system and its performances.

Abstract

A new mechanism is suggested for efficient proton acceleration in the GeV energy range; applications to non-conventional high intensity proton drivers and, hence, to low-energy (10-200 MeV) neutrino sources are discussed. In particular, we investigate possible uses of these sources to explore subdominant Î1⁄2Ì„Î1⁄4→Î1⁄2eoscillations at the atmospheric scale and their CP conjugate. We emphasize the opportunity to develop these facilities in conjunction with projects for inertial confined nuclear fusion and neutron spallation sources. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Assuming three generations of Majorana neutrinos, we study the different mixing patterns that arise from the non-trivial breaking of the flavor group A5 and CP to the residual symmetries Z3, Z5 or Z2 x Z2 in the charged lepton and to Z2 x CP in the neutrino sector. All patterns contain only one free parameter theta and thus mixing angles as well as the Dirac and the two Majorana phases are strongly correlated. We perform an analytical and a numerical study of all possible mixing patterns. It turns out that only four patterns can describe the experimentally measured values of the mixing angles for a particular choice of theta well. All of them predict trivial Majorana phases, while the Dirac phase delta is maximal for two patterns and trivial for the two remaining ones. Abstract

International audience; The measurement of neutrino masses is still one of the most compelling issues in modern particle physics. HOLMES is an experiment that aims to measure the effective νe mass using a calorimetric approach. It will measure the spectrum end point of the electron capture (EC) decay of $^{163}$Ho. The very low Q-value (2.8 keV) of the decay and its half life (4570 y) are optimal to reach simultaneously a reasonable activity to have sufficient statistics in the end-point, reducing the pile-up probability and have a small quantity of $^{163}$Ho embedded in the detector not to alter significantly its heat capacity. Holmium will be implanted into a micro calorimeter made by a metallic absorber coupled to transition edge sensor (TES). Each detector will be implanted with around 300 Bq of holmium and the goal of the experiment is implanting ≈500 detectors (8x64 array of detectors) to reach an accuracy of the order of eV. In this contribution, we show the HOLMES experiment with its physics reach and technical challenges, along with its status and perspectives.
