YOGA ,PSYCHOLOGICAL well-being ,MENTAL depression - Abstract
Adolescent parenting presents significant challenges for mothers, often leading to elevated levels of stress and anxiety that can adversely affect their well-being and parenting effectiveness. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of yoga alone and in combination with Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) in managing stress and anxiety among mothers of adolescent children. In this randomized controlled trial, 90 participants aged 35-55 years (mean age 44.56±4.58 years), each with at least one child aged 13-19 years, were randomly assigned to one of three groups: control, yoga, or yoga with NLP. Interventions were conducted over 12 weeks, with outcome measures assessed pre- and post-intervention by trained research assistants blinded to group allocation. The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), were utilized to evaluate outcomes. Both intervention groups demonstrated significant reductions in depression, anxiety, and stress levels compared to the control group. The yoga with NLP group exhibited superior improvements across all primary outcomes, with statistically significant differences noted in depression (mean difference =7.1, p<0.001), anxiety (mean difference =5.1, p<0.001) and stress levels (mean difference =5.5, p<0.001). Additionally, sleep quality improved significantly in both intervention groups, with the yoga with NLP group showing greater benefits. This study provides evidence that yoga, particularly in combination with NLP, is an effective non-pharmacological approach for reducing stress and anxiety and improving sleep quality among mothers of adolescents. These findings support the integration of mind-body practices into mental health care, highlighting the potential synergistic benefits of combining physical and cognitive interventions. Future research should explore long-term effects and the mechanisms underlying these improvements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to Malaysia's Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), workplace accidents have increased dramatically as the country's economy has grown rapidly. The purpose of this study is to identify the trends that lead to fatal workplace accidents in Malaysia. This study investigated 505 fatal accident instances from fifteen industries, using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The DOSH discovered and reported these fatalities (2010-2020). Data was organized and coded, then analyzed using Spearman's rank order correlation, frequency analysis, Eta squared, Cramer's V, and Chi-square. Moreover, neurolinguistic programming was used to generate the word cloud and sentiment analysis. Furthermore, light gradient-boosting machine learning was used to better understand the causes of fatalities. The outcomes indicated that fatal falls from heights were the leading cause of fatal accidents (32%). General laborers were the most susceptible to fatal accidents (60%). Contract workers were more likely to die in construction accidents (64%). The findings of this study gave useful insights into workplace fatal accident trends and preventive measures throughout sectors.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a part of applied science, a combination of Linguistics and Psychological Sciences which has been frequently used in various domains since 1970. Its effectiveness in responding to various situations can be seen in the scope of companies, businesses, campuses, education, marketing, health, personal life, and even the improvement of spiritual life. NLP is a powerful and useful methodology that helps us communicate effectively and get the desired results. In this research, NLP technique observations were carried out on the multiculturalism activities of Pandita/Hindu Religious Leaders in Bali. Hindu priests in Bali give religious lectures, cultural seminars, and religious and cultural rituals not only in Balinese and Indonesian but also in English. Multiculturalism activities are also carried out by various ethnic groups, religions, and citizens of the world. There are three NLP patterns used by Hindu Pandita in Bali in their multiculturalism activities: Deletion, Generalization, and Distortion. Frequently, the Deletion and Distortion techniques are most widely used. These techniques can provide benefits such as communication becoming more effective and flexible, the speaker becoming more charismatic, and listeners being curious about what kind of thoughts/views they have and having further curiosity. This study investigated the effectiveness of Integrated Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) as a supplementary intervention for individuals with depressive symptoms in the Philippines. The study employed an A-B Single Case - Multiple-subject Comparative Design with three female participants diagnosed with depression. The intervention, administered by an Internationally Certified Master Practitioner of NLP, utilized various NLP techniques, including the Meta Model, reframing, anchoring, Timeline Therapy®, and hypnotherapy, over four weekly sessions. The Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL) and the Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire (ATQ-30) were used to assess changes in depressive symptoms before and after the intervention. The results showed significant reductions in depressive symptoms across all participants, particularly in areas related to negative self-concept, negative expectations, and low self-esteem. The study highlights the potential of Integrated-NLP as a supplementary intervention for individuals with depression, emphasizing the importance of personalized approaches and further research in this field. The findings contribute to the limited literature on NLP's clinical application in the Philippines and offer valuable insights for mental health practitioners seeking alternative or complementary interventions for depression. Gatekeeping, or determining membership of your group, is crucial to science: the moniker 'scientific' is a stamp of epistemic quality or even authority. But gatekeeping in science is fraught with dangers. Gatekeepers must exclude bad science, science fraud and pseudoscience, while including the disagreeing viewpoints on which science thrives. This is a difficult tightrope, not least because gatekeeping is a human matter and can be influenced by biases such as groupthink. After spelling out these general tensions around gatekeeping in science, we shed light on them with a case study from psychology. This concerns whether academic psychologists rightly or wrongly classify the applied-psychology framework of NLP ('neuro-linguistic programming') as unscientific and even pseudoscientific. This example of gatekeeping is particularly instructive because both the NLP community and the psychology community, we argue, make legitimate but also illegitimate moves. This case gives rise to several general insights about gatekeeping in science more generally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Researchers in both academic and practical fields have been seeking to find answers and solutions regarding business and firm issues, through testing hypotheses and trying different techniques; to do so it was necessary to turn towards the most important element and center and actor of every action, that is the individual, especially in such a dynamic environment that have direct and indirect influence on the way the work is done. Because of that, the importance of interindividual communication has become extremely high, especially during the strategy process. In this context, NLP emerges as a modern set of tools that help develop communication skills which helps in its turn in facilitating the process of attaining goals and facing changes in business environment.

Disney Strategy ,Extrinsic motivation ,Intrinsic motivation ,Mental health ,Neuro-linguistic programming ,Reframing ,Compassion - Abstract
Having worked in the field of human resources, my publications focused on mental health and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). Poor mental health has been reported among workers and university students in the United Kingdom (UK). The costs of poor work mental health are estimated to be £87 billion annually in the UK. In particular, hospitality workers, who comprise 7% of the country's workforce, are known to suffer from poor mental health. Likewise, more than a quarter of UK university students suffer from a mental health problem. Through a series of cross-sectional studies using correlation, regression, moderation and path analyses, I found that mental health shame was positively related with mental health problems, and self-compassion and intrinsic motivation were negatively related to both mental health shame and mental health problems in a variety of population groups that had not been explored before, including UK workers, UK students and Japanese workers. In my NLP research, I investigated the application of NLP-derived skills for career guidance and critically reviewed psychological outcomes of applying those skills in organisational settings, through a pre-post study, thematic analysis, and systematic review. Two skills, the Disney Strategy and Sponsorship, were regarded particularly useful by the small sample of registered career consultants in Japan investigated in Publication 1. My systematic review (Publication 8) concluded that while NLP may be effective for diverse psychological outcomes, there is a need for rigorous future research. Taken together, my findings suggest the wide applicability of the effects of self-compassion and intrinsic motivation on mental health, and the similarity of Sponsorship to the soothing system in the three emotion regulatory systems. The critical appraisal of my published works identified four areas that are caveats for understanding the findings and could benefit from further work: (a) Lack of consideration for established predictors, (b) Mental health variables being treated as a unitary construct, (c) Balanced discussion of positive and negative aspects of mental health, and (d) Lack of critical appraisal 6 of NLP. Future research should consider these critical insights to improve our understanding of mental health and NLP.

This paper aims to explore the common principles and concepts between Sufism, a mystical branch of Islam focused on spiritual growth and divine connection, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), a psychological approach rooted in the exploration of human consciousness, personal transformation, and effective communication techniques. By understanding the shared connection between the two, we can gain a deeper understanding of both thereby highlighting the interactions between these two areas that offer the tools, practices, and perspectives to enhance self-awareness, personal growth, and spiritual development. By analysing the works of scholars including William Chittick, Reynold A. Nicholson, and Carl Ernst, this paper aims to shed light on the potential connections and overlaps between NLP, Sufism and The findings indicate a significant alignment between NLP and Sufism, particularly in terms of their core principles concerning human consciousness, communication, and personal transformation. This invites reflection on the sixth sense bestowed by Allah, as described in Sufi teachings. The research methodology involves a comprehensive literature review, examining relevant texts and scholarly articles to identify shared aims, principles, and practices adopted by NLP and Sufism and the significance of practices such as Muraqaba, Silva and Tasawwuf. EYE movements , *NEUROLINGUISTICS , *EYE tracking , *LONGITUDINAL method , *NEUROLINGUISTIC programming - Abstract
The eyes are in constant movement to optimize the interpretation of the visual scene by the brain. Eye movements are controlled by complex neural networks that interact with the rest of the brain. The direction of our eye movements could thus be influenced by our cognitive activity (imagination, internal dialogue, memory, etc.). A given cognitive activity could then cause the gaze to move in a specific direction (a brief movement that would be instinctive and unconscious). Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), which was developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder (psychologist and linguist respectively), issued a comprehensive theory associating gaze directions with specific mental tasks. According to this theory, depending on the visual path observed, one could go back to the participant's thoughts and cognitive processes. Although NLP is widely used in many disciplines (communication, psychology, psychotherapy, marketing, etc), to date, few scientific studies have examined the validity of this theory. Using eye tracking, this study explores one of the hypotheses of this theory, which is one of the pillars of NLP on visual language. We created a protocol based on a series of questions of different types (supposed to engage different brain areas) and we recorded by eye tracking the gaze movements at the end of each question while the participants were thinking and elaborating on the answer. Our results show that 1) complex questions elicit significantly more eye movements than control questions that necessitate little reflection, 2) the movements are not random but are oriented in selected directions, according to the different question types, 3) the orientations observed are not those predicted by the NLP theory. This pilot experiment paves the way for further investigations to decipher the close links between eye movements and neural network activities in the brain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the research is to analyze the communicative relationship of screen culture with the viewer, to determine the forms and means of media influence on the audience, to rethink the concept of “media manipulation” and to outline the importance of non-verbal semiotics on television. The research methodology is carried out by analyzing and synthesizing the activities of modern mass media based on: the empirical method, which is manifested in observing and comparing the general trends in the development of media communication processes; the method of theoretical substantiation of the screen arts work, in particular, television, in the context of the manifestation of special forms and means of communicative influence on the viewer; a systematic approach that allows analyzing, specifying, clarifying and generalizing all stages of the technology of using communication in the media. The scientific novelty is due to the identification of strategies and tactics for the use of various manifestations of verbal and non-verbal communicative influence by analyzing specific examples of television programs. The manifestations of wordless communication on television are analyzed in detail, the dialectic of the visual-verbal image on the screen is explained, and modern technologies of manipulation in the screen discourse are formed. Conclusions. In the course of the research, we have studied in detail the technologies of media communication and determined the dependence of typical forms of communication on audience targeting. With the help of deciphering the methods and means of communicative influence, the concept of media manipulation has been explained, and the importance of using NLP and neuromarketing technologies in the domestic media market has been proved. Specific tools of non-verbal semiotics have been revealed in the example of domestic political talk shows and their hosts.

Persuasion is a symbolic process in which speakers try to convince people to change their attitudes or belief. It has been studied at psychological and philosophical level in different times of history as it prevails in every domain of life. Motivational speeches are an emerging genre in the domain of persuasion that needs to be explored and investigated. The present study used Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) approach as a framework for the exploration of persuasion strategies in motivational speeches put forward by Bandler and Grinder (1975). They gave a set of patterns to guide people for an effective communication in their daily lives or public speaking. This research attempted to examine motivational speeches of Anthony Robbins keeping in mind NLP strategies. The recurrent patterns employed by the speaker were identified using Ant Conc. The results of the study showed that the most frequent patterns include cause and effect, universal quantifiers, nominalizations, tag questions, auditory, kinesthetic, and auditory-digital predicates and story-telling technique. The speaker had tried to convince his audience by logical as well as emotional appeal created through these patterns. He focused more on how the audience “feel” and “think” at abstract level. After studying the results, it is stated that persuasive messages are not confined to any specific strategy providing logos, pathos or ethos –it is always an inclusive idea. A persuasive message is always combination of rationale and narrative, an integrated perspective regardless of any dualistic approach. The data used in this research is limited, however, the research provides a methodological basis for further studies which can add more motivation speeches and a number of speakers to compare and contrast their speeches from the perspective of NLP strategies and their impact on the audience.

The present work is the result of an investigation to know the effect of neuro-linguistic programming techniques (NLP) on the motivation of students who study English as a second language. This study was carried out when student demotivation and therefore school dropout were observed in previous years. The research was carried out during an academic quarter and was carried out by a quantitative methodology with a quasi-experimental design of pre-test-post-test of non-equivalent groups where the cause and effect relationships between the dependent and the independent variable were explored. The sample was for convenience and was composed of 42 participants. The demographics of the learners belonged to a low socioeconomic status, being undocumented immigrants. The results obtained in this study corroborated that the implemented neurolinguistic programming techniques, refrainting, visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning, as well as anchoring, helped students to be more motivated and, therefore, to achieve the established objectives. More research should be carried out to extrapolate the results found to other contexts and to other populations to improve the teaching and learning process in the acquisition of linguistic competence. Aim: This study, which used quantitative and qualitative design, was conducted to explore the effect of neuro‐linguistic programming techniques on the conflict management and interpersonal problem‐solving skills of nurse managers. Background: Neuro‐linguistic programming is among the methods that can enable managers to achieve the desired results in managing interpersonal problems and conflicts in an organisation. Methods: The research was carried out with a mixed methods approach. The Personal and Professional Characteristics Information Form, Interpersonal Problem‐Solving Inventory and Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory‐II were applied to 41 nurse managers and nurses to collect quantitative data for the study. Semi‐structured questionnaires were used to collect qualitative data in focus‐group interviews held both before and 6 months after the training. Results: As a result of the content analysis of the qualitative data, the nurse managers in the training group were found to have improved abilities to plan and increased flexibility, positiveness, happiness and motivation when compared to the nurse managers in the control group. Findings supporting these data were obtained in the analyses of interviews with nurses. Conclusion: Neuro‐linguistic programming training can make a difference in terms of helping nurse managers to develop interpersonal problem‐ and conflict‐solving skills. Implications for Nursing Management: Nurse managers can use neuro‐linguistic programming techniques for conflict management and interpersonal problem‐solving occurring in their organizations. For this purpose, it is recommended that pregraduate and postgraduate neuro‐linguistic programming training is provided to nurse managers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
COVID-19 has borne witness to unprecedented change in business, the likes of which has not been seen since the beginning of the internet revolution. This situation has placed leaders in a unique and challenging scenario, which sees them repositioning their companies and workforce in ways that were impossible to foresee, resulting in unprecedented changes to normal workplace responsibilities. This paper posits that the practical implications of using emotional intelligence (EI) and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) can help leaders act in ways that are more empathetic and intentional in managing the emotional impacts caused by workplace stress, distress, isolation and other factors caused by the pandemic, both professionally and personally. In using the tools offered by EI and NLP, leaders can better understand 'self' and 'other', in the context, not only of the current pandemic crisis but in other more general contexts associated with workplace changes, and the stress associated with those changes. Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is considered to be one of the socially valued practices whose conceptual and methodological grounds can be articulated when seen in the light of its discursive representation. Characterization and evaluation of this area in applied psychology proceeds through analysis of expert standpoints and views rendered in secondary sources where they express the conformity level of the discourse in question to academic standards existent in psychology as a theory. Special attention is given to the propositional expression of the ideas defining NLP studies as well as to the exposure of presuppositional attitudes of the NLP expert whose textbook is under discussion in the article. The logical correctness and validity of those presuppositions are analyzed in relation to their adequate representation of scientific or mass worldview. After having exposed the author’s intentions one can state the pragmatic strategy and ideology pursued by the NLP expert in the textbook alongside with the identity of NLP as a discursive and social practice, its position among other discursive practices. The results obtained after the analysis of a particular piece of NLP discourse are congruent with the current trends typical of postmodernist consumerist society. Characteristic postmodernist ways to organize verbal interaction – in particular, forms of discourse imitation, its variation and hybridization – are found in the examples provided. A practical workbook on NLP in English was taken as a source for evidence. Critical discourse-analysis (CDA) served as the guiding approach to the problem, which was realized at some points of the study as contextual analysis, definitive analysis, interpretation method, statistical procedures altogether with quantitative estimation.

This book review explores how Rigney Battenberg and Rigney have provided all who care about the arts with a thought-provoking investigation of how the physiological facts shape what we see. Their book describes a system of eye exercises designed to improve vision and help people use their eyes in a healthy way. The reference to “yoga” in the title is reflected in their emphasis on the importance of stretching and strengthening the eye muscles; this helps to keep the eyes healthy and also to minimize the strain caused by fixating on computer screens or printed pages for hours at a time. There is also a deeper connection to yogic practice in their examination of the habitual choices we make about where to focus of our attention. Battenberg and Rigney argue that thoughtful use of eye exercises can awaken a deep sense of connection with the world.

Aims: The Neuro-linguistic Programming approach (NLP) refers to a distinct connection between neurological and linguistic procedures and behavioral patterns learned through planning. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of training neuro-linguistic programming strategies on self-efficiency, sport self-confidence, and performance of athletes with disabilities and veterans. Materials and Methods: In this semi-experimental study with pre-test post-test design with control group, 30 veterans and physically-injured athletes, who were members of 2 sitting volleyball teams (Gostaresh-e-Foolade Tabriz and Shahrdarye Tabriz) were selected by purposeful sampling method and divided in experimental (15 people) and control (15 people) groups. The instruments used in this study included general self-efficiency scale, sport confidence questionnaire, and Smith and Hanford functional test. All participants trained special skills during 24 sessions over 2 months. The experimental group, besides specific volleyball exercises, completed 18 sessions (each session took 30 minutes), practicing neuro-linguistic programming strategies. The data were analyzed by SPSS 23, using multivariate covariance analysis and dependent sample t-test. Findings: In the experimental group, sport confidence (F=33.47) and general self-efficiency (F=41.69) were significantly higher than the control group, and 65.0% and 69.5% of the changes in sport confidence and general self-efficiency were explained by NLP strategies (p

In the world we live in, education is praised as a base for training and nurturing future generations and teaching is considered as a valuable profession through which future generations are flourished. The main components of each educational system must work well in order to create a successful system and achieve the desired results. Teachers are considered as one of the key determinant factors and active decision-makers of any educational system. Learners are also taken into account as one of the main elements of the system who are instructed to reach some educational goals. Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), with high potential for English teaching and learning, is regarded as a supplementary technique which helps the teachers to develop outstanding skills like critical thinking, self-efficacy, and rapport which are necessary to bring on success and achievement to the education and to support learners to achieve excellence in their performance. The article first presents a brief history and definition of NLP. Then it is followed by some information about the main pillars of neuro-linguistic programming. The discussion then turns to understanding some of the implications of NLP for English language teachers and learners and its potential for educational success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Education especially "teaching" is considered as a valuable profession through which future generations are generated and educated. In order to have a successful educational system, the main components of the system must work together. It is believed that teachers are active decision-makers of any educational system who can bring on success to the education, accounting for about 30 percent of the variance on pupils' achievement. Based on different studies, developing rapport, critical thinking, self-efficacy, establishing clear goals, effective interpersonal communication, and a supportive classroom climate are some of the main determinant factors the teachers' effectiveness. Among various variables which are related to teachers, identity is one of the important elements that affect teachers' performance. Neuro-linguistic programming, on the other hand, is considered as an approach which is claimed to help achieve excellence in performance and identity. It is also considered as a supplementary technique in teaching profession which helps the teachers to develop outstanding skills. In this article, the researcher defines the concept of teacher's identity as a key element effective in the teaching profession. Then some factors that have significant impact on teachers' effectiveness are taken into account. Also, the definition of neuro-linguistics programming, some of its characteristics, and its implications for developing teacher's identity and teacher's effectiveness are discussed. Background: Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a model for targeting changes in neurological connections, using language and imagination to restructure the clients' subjective experience. NLP has received increasing attention in the area of human performance. However, over the past two decades, a new approach named Neuro-Semantics (NS) has emerged as an NLP-stimulated approach that adopts a self-reflexive perspective of the clients' thinking processes. Materials and Methods: To illustrate the application of NLP and NS in sport psychology counseling, this study refers to a case study involving a dancer suffering from performance anxiety. We started the intervention using NLP as a model of intrapersonal communication, working with the dancer's mental representation system. After our client had faced a higher intensity of anxiety, we altered the intervention to NS, which operates on a meta-cognition level of mental processes. This meta-cognitive application of NS could be vital as it could help the performers to have more control over dysfunctional thoughts and stop worsening emotional suffering and thus, the maintenance of the treatment can be sustained. The counselling lasted five months, involving 40 sessions involving two sessions per week, each lasting between 60 to 70 minutes. This study presented the client's responses when the treatment was changed from NLP to NS. Result: Based on the interview sessions with the client and her choreographer, it was found that the client experienced less anxiety during her performance and her physiological signs like rapid breathing, trembling knees, sweaty and cold hands, and changes in her vision had also lessened. From a behavioural point of view, she participated in training sessions more frequently and with fewer performance errors. She also became more open to communicating with other dancers. Conclusion: The intervention had successfully helped the client to control her anxiety and to perform with fever errors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This essay investigates what may constitute a hypnotic digital artefact from a design standpoint. This essay is meant to help designers who want to create hypnotic digital artefacts in the shape of a game, or researchers who wants to further this field. With a case study analysing the game Cultist Simulator, this essay observes applications from this essay’s frameworks: NLP, Procedural Rhetorics, Flow, Trance, and Ericksonian Hypnosis. The case study serves to demonstrate how a larger scale reflection of intrinsic cross over points between hypnosis and the video game medium may take place within state-of-the-art discourse. This essay fulfils its design-aid purpose by charting factors that can be put in place to facilitate a trance and a hypnosis in a game, in a design table summarising design methods discussed. The means that may put a player’s mind in abeyance are posited here regarding how this may influence the game experience, including induction techniques, where suggestions are provided in how these might translate to a game format. Through its frameworks and case study, hypnotic content generation is put in focus, where this essay finds that games utilising metaphors and depicting inner spaces carry significance in this pursuit. It also finds that mirroring communication of the unconscious, such as adhering to rules of a dream state, and acknowledging the unconscious’ uses and capacities, has potential in this pursuit. Importantly, the essay includes a discussion on Cultist Simulator’s decadent aesthetics and its role in leading a player towards an alternate state of consciousness.

Several congregations in the workspace of the Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa are losing viability and sustainability. This can be attributed to various factors, the most prominent being isolation. Isolation is defined here as the inability of some congregations to move away from maintenance and an inward focus towards making necessary adjustments on the way to a dimension of missional focus. While commitment and enthusiasm are present in the work of all congregations, some find it difficult to adapt their established ideas and in some cases obsolete customs and traditions. Other congregations have made the necessary adjustments by defining themselves as missional. In congregations where constructive change occurs, the focus moves to undertake congregational ministries. The congregation not only gains insight into their own situation but also becomes aware of God’s calling for that specific congregation within a specific context. The focus shifts from their own situation and needs to the needs and challenges of the context surrounding the specific congregation. A consequence of this change in focus is that the whole ministry of the congregation adjusts accordingly. These congregations discover their own unique spirituality and begin to ask: For whom do we exist? The article is based on a PhD thesis, where Osmer’s four questions of practical theology were brought into the conversation with the modelling process of neuro-linguistic programming, in an attempt to sojourn with congregations towards a contextual missional focus. This research was undertaken to expand Osmer’s four questions of practical theology by using the modelling process of neuro-linguistic programming so that congregations may succeed in making the necessary adjustments.

In this paper, we aim to highlight the characteristics of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and suggest possible directions for future research and study. The majority of NLP studies argue for more rigorous empirical support and standardised regulatory governance, in order to overcome academic biases and general misunderstandings. However, its popular practice for just under half a century and its global usage, suggest there is grounding for NLP to be accepted into the "mainstream" of psychology. We compare NLP with more "accepted" approaches (cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness, and coaching), and explore its practice regulations. While its efficiency (thorough analysis and applicability) was identified as its strength, more rigorous research and universal regulations of practice are needed for NLP to move onto the next level of acceptance. Introduction: Behavioral models of excellence are used to profile successful human behavior and, through a training program, to teach others the characteristics of success. Objectives: The objectives were to profile an application of the NLP LifeSets© MOE and highlight considerations for successful implementation of MOE-based training programs. Methods: To develop a model of excellence, data is typically gathered across four components: meta programs, contextual beliefs, cognitive strategies and physiology. The patterns revealed through interview, observation and the structured survey are confirmed through component-specific validation processes and analyzed to determine the prevailing patterns for the 'star performers'. The resulting NLP LifeSets© Model of Excellence profile is a synthesis of this analysis and is accepted as the operational MOE once reviewed and agreed with the client. From this NLP LifeSets© MOE, a training program is developed. Results: This paper describes one study and discusses some of the advantages of this approach to organizational training, as well as some of the challenges in the successful implementation of new behaviors and attitudes. Conclusions: The article concludes with emphasizing the importance of management commitment to behavioral modelling projects and suggests some further uses of model of excellence profiling. The huge popularity of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) over the past three decades has in some ways mirrored the growth in coaching psychology. This paper is part of a series of four papers in a special issue within ICPR that aims to explore NLP coaching from diverse perspectives, offering personal insights or reviews of evidence. As part of this process a pair of authors were invited to advance the case for and the case against NLP. This paper aims to adopt a critical stance; reviewing the concept of NLP, exploring the claims made by advocates and critically reviewing the evidence from a psychological perspective. In undertaking this review we completed a series of literature searches using a range of discovery tools to identify research papers, based on pre-determined search criteria. This review led us to the conclusion that unique NLP practices are poorly supported by research evidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) has been a significant presence in the business training and personal development fields since at least the early 1980s. NLP as a change methodology has attracted significant controversy over the years with claims and counter claims as to its effectiveness and validity. Although there is little to no empirical support for the central tenants of NLP, many coaches, psychologists and reputable agents of change who are otherwise committed to an evidence-based approach to their practice, utilise and engage with NLP methodologies. Not surprisingly, such practitioners often experience dissonance, tension and confusion about NLP. In this paper I reflect on the tension between my personal experience of NLP and my own commitment to an evidence-based approach to coaching. My assumption here is that the tension and ambivalence that I have personally experienced in relation to NLP is not singularly mine and that others have experienced similar feelings. I conclude that, coupled with the lack of empirical evidence for many core NLP constructs, the multiple misrepresentations made by many in the NLP industry over a significant period of time have effectively ruined the NLP brand. The demise of NLP is a salutary lesson for all who are engaged in the personal or professional development genre. This serves to remind us to ensure that our coaching methodologies and the broader coaching industry remain firmly grounded in evidence-based approaches, that we adhere to professional ethical standards and through practicing critical thinking and open-mindedness we remain forever vigilant against the onset of 'guruism'. This paper tracks a practitioner's journey through his attempts to understand the nature of neurolinguistic programming (NLP). It draws from the author's self-study, being both a master NLP trainer and a chartered psychologist and also from the author's own PhD research, (Grimley, 2016) which explicitly asked the question 'What is NLP?' The author discusses the importance of finding an answer to this question should NLP as a field, and its application to coaching specifically, wish to validate its modality. Taking from psychometric literature the idea of construct validity, the author concludes that NLP needs to develop a more well defined and standardised definition as well as a more well defined and standardised certificated training route to NLP practitioner before it can usefully answer the question does NLP coaching work in a predictive way? The paper acknowledges and signposts the reader to the important work currently undertaken by the NLP Leadership Summit in this respect. The style of this paper is oriented towards an Action Research paradigm where 'reflection in action and reflection on that reflection in action' (McNiff & Whitehead, 2000, p.2) is regarded as an appropriate research protocol to produce valid knowledge for consideration, especially when adopting an insider perspective as was recommended for research into NLP by Einspruch and Forman (1985).
