1. Preparing Students in Professional Programs for Rural Practice: A Case Study

Abstract

Understanding the supports and constraints available in rural communities is integral to the education of professionals who choose to practise in rural settings. Previous research has indicated that many professionals do not have an accurate understanding of rural contexts and how rural settings impact personal life and professional practice. To address this gap, an interprofessional course centring on professional practice in rural and remote communities was developed. This course was designed to be reflective of rural practice, not only in content but also in the way the course was delivered. Findings from this case study indicated that students' understanding of the complexity of rural settings was enhanced on multiple levels. The interactive and experiential nature of the course allowed students to develop working relationships that increased both their understanding of the value of interprofessional collaboration as well as the professional opportunities that are available in rural areas.

2. What are the essential elements to promote organizational compassion? A scoping review

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has illuminated a high degree of post-traumatic stress (PTS) among front-line healthcare providers (HCPs). Notably, factors that promote HCP resilience to PTS include characteristics related to their places of work, many of which correspond to organizational-level mechanisms rooted in compassion. However, despite the identified benefits of organizational compassion, it is often not a priority in healthcare contexts wherein there are known barriers to promoting organizational compassion. Purpose: The overall goal of this scoping review is to distill key findings about essential organizational-level components that promote organizational compassion within healthcare settings. Methods: Using scoping review methods outlined by the Joanna Briggs Institute, a literature search is being conduct in March 2022. Two independent reviewers will screen articles using a priori eligibility criteria. After extracting data from included studies, an overall synthesis of the literature’s findings about organizational-level characteristics that promote organizational level compassion.
