Abstract

Integrated fiber components enable compact and robust laser systems but are usually not available with specialty fibers. However, specialty fibers allow power scaling of fiber lasers and amplifiers with all advantages of these fiber designs. In this context, chirally-coupled-core fibers show promising properties for optical fiber components. In this paper, we present the development of a highly-integrated signal and pump combiner in chirally-core-fibers using a side-pumping technology. Combining up to four fiber-coupled pump diodes, a pump-light limited power handling of 600 W can be achieved with an efficiency of 78%. The combiner was tested in a side-pumped single-frequency all-fiber amplifier but can also be implemented in almost any fiber laser or amplifier.

Abstract

To explain the determinants of negative behavior toward deviants (e.g., punishment), this article examines how people evaluate others on the basis of two types of standards: minimal and maximal. Minimal standards focus on an absolute cutoff point for appropriate behavior; accordingly, the evaluation of others varies dichotomously between acceptable or unacceptable. Maximal standards focus on the degree of deviation from that standard; accordingly, the evaluation of others varies gradually from positive to less positive. This framework leads to the prediction that violation of minimal standards should elicit punishment regardless of the degree of deviation, whereas punishment in response to violations of maximal standards should depend on the degree of deviation. Four studies assessed or manipulated the type of standard and degree of deviation displayed by a target. Results consistently showed the expected interaction between type of standard (minimal and maximal) and degree of deviation on punishment behavior.

Abstract

We report on a compact Nd:YAG amplifier emitting a maximum pulse energy of 14 mJ. By amplifying a passively Q-switched oscillator ([M.sup.2] < 1.2) a good beam quality of [M.sup.2] [approximately equal to] 1.7 was achieved. The amplifier is diode pumped by an 8 bar diode stack of 800 W power and a nonimaging optic. This optic homogenizes the pump light and transfers it into a 5 mm diameter core doped rod with a centrally neodymium doped region of 3 mm and a samarium doped YAG cladding. We show that this cladding reduces parasitic effects in the laser rod compared to an undoped YAG cladding. Finally, we compare the compact amplifier with an amplifier, which is mode selectively pumped by a fiber coupled pump diode. OCIS codes: 140.3280, 140.3480, 140.3540, 080.4298.

Abstract

The nucleation process and the initial bubble expansion around a single micron-sized absorber following nanosecond laser irradiation are examined. The magnitude of the velocities has shown that the bubble expansion has taken place in superheated water around the melanosome and that the bubble expansion has become more explosive at increasing radiant exposure.
