Abstract

The heat flow in normal conductor-insulator-superconductor junctions were modeled to show that the quasiparticle back-tunneling and phonon absorption flow of heat from quasiparticle recombination into the normal electrode overcompensate the cooling power. The model offers different solutions to the self-heating effects observed in the normal conductor-insulator-superconductor. Back-tunneling current reduction measures include the attachment of quasiparticle traps to the superconducting electrode.

Abstract

Neutron howitzers are routinely used in universities to activate samples for instructional laboratory experiments on radioactivity. They are also a convenient source of neutrons and gammas for research purposes, but they must be used with caution. This paper describes the modeling, design, construction, and testing of a portable, economical shield for a 1.0 Curie neutron howitzer. The Monte Carlo N Particle Transport Code (MCNP5) has been used to model the 239PuBe source and the howitzer and to design the external neutron and gamma shield.

Abstract

As part of a study of the somatosensory P300 event-related potential (ERP) in paranoid and nonparanoid schizophrenic patients (8) Pearson's product-moment correlations between ERP waveforms were calculated to study the functional relationship between brain areas. ERP were recorded from F3, F4, P3 and P4; interhemispheric (F3 to F4; P3 to P4) and intrahemispheric (F3 to P3; F4 to P4) correlations were obtained. There was no significant difference among the paranoid and nonparanoid patients and healthy controls for both the interhemispheric and the intrahemispheric correlations. The lack of disruption of functional relationship between brain areas on the patients do not support the hypofrontality and the laterality hypothesis of schizophrenia. However, the use of neuroleptics by the patients, the study of the whole waveforms and not parts of them and the use of linked-ears reference could account for these negative results.

38. Natural history of the iliac arteries after endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and suitability of ectatic iliac arteries as a distal sealing zone.

Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the natural history of dilated common iliac arteries (CIA) exposed to pulsatile blood flow after endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) and the suitability of ectatic iliac arteries as sealing zones using flared iliac limbs. Methods: Follow-up computed tomograms of 102 CIAs in 60 EVAR patients were investigated. Diameter changes in CIAs < or =16 mm (group 1) were compared with changes in vessels where a dilated segment >16 mm in diameter continued to be exposed to pulsatile blood flow (group 2). Within group 2, cases in which the stent terminated proximal to the dilated artery segment (2a) were compared with those that had been treated with a flared limb (2b). Results: The mean CIA diameter increased by 1.0+/-1.0 mm in group 1 (p<0.001 versus immediately after EVAR) and by 1.5+/-1.7 mm in group 2 (p<0.001 versus immediately after EVAR) within an average follow-up of 43.6+/-18.0 months. Diameter increase was more pronounced in dilated CIAs (p=0.048), and it was not significantly different between groups 2a and 2b (p=0.188). No late distal type I endoleak or stent-graft migration associated with CIA ectasia was observed. Conclusion: Dilatation of the CIA is significant after EVAR, and it is more pronounced in ectatic iliac arteries. Abstract

For patients with chronic non-reconstructible limb ischemia (chronic CLI), spinal-cord stimulation (SCS) has been advocated for the treatment of ischemic pain and prevention of amputation. The present clinical report was performed to evaluate the long-term effects of SCS on limb survival. A retrospective review was performed of 21 patients who had undergone SCS between December 1997 and July 2002 due to chronic CLI. The impulse generator used was the Itrel device (Medtronic, Inc). All conventional methods for revascularization and improvement of microcirculatory blood flow had been performed prior to SCS treatment. Patient selection was performed by clinical examination, pulse volume records, Doppler ankle/brachial measurements, angiography, and thoracic spine and lumbar spine x-ray. Since July 2000, additional TcpO2 measurements at the dorsum of the foot have been performed. SCS implantation was performed as a one-stage procedure in all cases. Patients are followed up to 57 months. Of 21 patients with chronic CLI, 20 (95%) were available for follow-up investigations. Four patients died one to fifteen months after implantation due to acute renal failure or myocardial infarction (19%). Major amputation could be avoided in 15 (71%) of 21 patients. Two electrode dislocation, one pulse-generator dislocation, and one wire disconnection occurred; no other complications were observed. Abstract

In 30 schizophrenic patients (sixteen of the paranoid subtype, 14 of the nonparanoid) and healthy controls (n = 30) event-related potentials were obtained with a somatosensory reaction-time (RT) version of the "oddball paradigm" by stimulating the right (first run) and the left (second run) median nerve. Variations of P300 amplitude and latency and of RT within the average (30 trials) were studied by fractionating off-line the original averages in three subaverages. After stimulation of the right median nerve oscillations on P300 amplitude and latency were observed. After stimulation of the left median nerve there was a trend toward a decrease of the P300 amplitude that reached significance at the electrode P3 for patients (p = 0.014) and at the electrode P4 for controls (p = 0.025). The P300 latency showed variations for patients and controls. The mean-RT was prolonged across the subaverages only for schizophrenics, reaching significance after stimulation of the right median nerve. Paranoid and nonparanoid schizophrenic patients showed similar results on P300 and RT parameters across the subaverages. These results are discussed in terms of the influence of motivation and task involvement on the P300 amplitude. These could be unspecific factors that account for the habituation of the P300 along the examination.
