We describe the absolute calibration of the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) 160 micron channel. After the on-orbit discovery of a near-IR ghost image that dominates the signal for sources hotter than about 2000 K, we adopted a strategy utilizing asteroids to transfer the absolute calibrations of the MIPS 24 and 70 micron channels to the 160 micron channel. Near-simultaneous observations at all three wavelengths are taken, and photometry at the two shorter wavelengths is fit using the Standard Thermal Model. The 160 micron flux density is predicted from those fits and compared with the observed 160 micron signal to derive the conversion from instrumental units to surface brightness. The calibration factor we derive is 41.7 MJy/sr/MIPS160 (MIPS160 being the instrumental units). The scatter in the individual measurements of the calibration factor, as well as an assesment of the external uncertainties inherent in the calibration, lead us to adopt an uncertainty of 5.0 MJy/sr/MIPS160 (12%) for the absolute uncertainty on the 160 micron flux density of a particular source as determined from a single measurement. For sources brighter than about 2 Jy, non-linearity in the response of the 160 micron detectors produces an under-estimate of the flux density: for objects as bright as 4 Jy, measured flux densities are likely to be ~20% too low. We present the stellar calibrator sample and the conversion from instrumental to physical units for the 24 micron channel of the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). The primary calibrators are A stars, and the calibration factor based on those stars is 4.54*10^{-2} MJy sr^{-1} (DN/s)^{-1}, with a nominal uncertainty of 2%. We discuss the data-reduction procedures required to attain this accuracy; without these procdures, the calibration factor obtained using the automated pipeline at the Spitzer Science Center is 1.6% +/- 0.6% lower. We extend this work to predict 24 micron flux densities for a sample of 238 stars which covers a larger range of flux densities and spectral types. We present a total of 348 measurements of 141 stars at 24 micron. This sample covers a factor of ~460 in 24 micron flux density, from 8.6 mJy up to 4.0 Jy. We show that the calibration is linear over that range with respect to target flux and background level. The calibration is based on observations made using 3-second exposures; a preliminary analysis shows that the calibration factor may be 1% and 2% lower for 10- and 30-second exposures, respectively. We also demonstrate that the calibration is very stable: over the course of the mission, repeated measurements of our routine calibrator, HD 159330, show a root-mean-square scatter of only 0.4%. Finally, we show that the point spread function (PSF) is well measured and allows us to calibrate extended sources accurately; Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) and MIPS measurements of a sample of nearby galaxies are identical within the uncertainties., Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures, to be published in PASP

We have observed 13 z >= 4.5 QSOs using the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer, nine of which were also observed with the Infrared Array Camera. The observations probe rest wavelengths ~ 0.6-4.3 micron, bracketing the local minimum in QSO spectral energy distributions (SEDs) between strong optical emission associated directly with accretion processes and thermal emission from hot dust heated by the central engine. The new Spitzer photometry combined with existing measurements at other wavelengths shows that the SEDs of high redshift QSOs (z >= 4.5) do not differ significantly from typical QSOs of similar luminosity at lower redshifts (z <~ 2). This behavior supports other indications that all the emission components and physical structures that characterize QSO activity can be established by z = 6.4. The similarity also suggests that some QSOs at high redshift will be very difficult to identify because they are viewed along dust-obscured sight lines., Comment: 1 eps figure

We have studied the infrared properties of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) located in the cores of X-ray-luminous clusters at 0.15 < z < 0.35. The majority of the BCGs are not particularly infrared-luminous compared with other massive early-type galaxies, suggesting that the cluster environment has little influence on the infrared luminosities of the BCGs. The exceptions, however, are the BCGs in the three X-ray-brightest clusters in the sample, A1835, Z3146, and A2390. These BCGs have a prominent far-infrared peak in their spectral energy distributions (SEDs), and two of them (those in A1835 and Z3146) can be classified as luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs: L_{IR} > 10^{11} L_{sun}). Although radio AGNs are found to be prevalent among the BCGs, the infrared luminosities of these three BCGs, judged from the infrared SED signatures, are likely to be powered by star formation. Considering the overall trend that clusters with shorter radiative gas cooling times harbor more infrared-luminous BCGs, the enhanced star formation may be caused by the cooling cluster gas accreting onto the BCGs., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ

In order to examine the relative importance of powerful starbursts and Compton-thick AGNs in NGC 6240, we have obtained mid-infrared images and low-resolution spectra of the galaxy with sub-arcsecond spatial resolution using the Keck Telescopes. Despite the high spatial resolution (~200 pc) of our data, no signature of the hidden AGNs has been detected in the mid-infrared. The southern nucleus, which we show provides 80-90% of the total 8-25 um luminosity of the system, has a mid-infrared spectrum and a mid-/far-infrared spectral energy distribution consistent with starbursts. At the same time, however, it is also possible to attribute up to 60% of the bolometric luminosity to an AGN, consistent with X-ray observations, if the AGN is heavily obscured and emits mostly in the far-infrared. This ambiguity arises because the intrinsic variation of properties among a given galaxy population (e.g., starbursts) introduces at least a factor of a few uncertainty even into the most robust AGN-starburst diagnostics. We conclude that with present observations it is not possible to determine the dominant power source in galaxies when AGN and starburst luminosities are within a factor of a few of each other., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables; Accepted for publication in AJ

We report MIPS photometry of 20 radio-loud quasars and galaxies at 24 and 70 um (and of five at 160 um). We combine this sample with additional sources detected in the far infrared by IRAS and ISO for a total of 47 objects, including 23 steep spectrum Type I AGNs: radio-loud quasars and broad line radio galaxies; and 24 Type II AGNs: narrow line and weak line FR II radio galaxies. Of this sample, the far infrared emission of all but 3C 380 appears to be dominated by emission by dust heated by the AGN and by star formation. The AGN appears to contribute more than 50% of the far infrared luminosity in most of sources. It is also expected that the material around the nucleus is optically thin in the far infrared. Thus, the measurements at these wavelengths can be used to test the orientation-dependent unification model. As predicted by the model, the behavior of the sources is consistent with the presence of an obscuring circumnuclear torus; in fact, we find it may still have significant optical depth at 24 um.In addition, as expected for the radio-loud quasars, there is a significant correlation between the low frequency radio (178 MHz) and the 70 um emission, two presumably isotropic indicators of nuclear activity. This result is consistent with the simple unified scheme. However, there is a population of radio galaxies that are underluminous at 70 um compared with the radio-loud quasars and hence are a challenge to the simple unified model., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 33 pages, 7 figures

Dust configurations are the simplest models for astrophysical objects. Here we examine the gravitational collapse of an infinite cylinder of dust and give an analytic interior solution. Surprisingly, starting with a cylindrically symmetric ansatz one arrives at a 3-space with constant curvature, i.e. the resulting metric describes a piece of the Friedman interior of the Oppenheimer-Snyder collapse. Indeed, by introducing double polar coordinates, a 3-space of constant curvature can be interpreted as a cylindrically symmetric space as well. This result shows afresh that topology is not fixed by the Einstein equations., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

Observations of Markarian 231 at 1.1 microns taken with NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope are described. The brightness of the object in the near infrared and the inherent short-term stability of the NICMOS optical and instrumental system enables application of special observational and analysis techniques that effectively increase high spatial resolution. By these means, we set an upper limit on the size of the core of the AGN nucleus at 8 mas corresponding to a radial projected distance from the center of MArkarian 231 of ~ 3pc., Comment: 13 pages + 4 figures, accepted to PASP

Galaxy source counts in the infrared provide strong constraints on the evolution of the bolometric energy output from distant galaxy populations. We present the results from deep 24 micron imaging from Spitzer surveys, which include approximately 50,000 sources to an 80% completeness of 60 uJy. The 24 micron counts rapidly rise at near-Euclidean rates down to 5 mJy, increase with a super-Euclidean rate between 0.4 - 4 mJy, and converge below 0.3 mJy. The 24 micron counts exceed expectations from non-evolving models by a factor >10 at 0.1 mJy. The peak in the differential number counts corresponds to a population of faint sources that is not expected from predictions based on 15 micron counts from ISO. We argue that this implies the existence of a previously undetected population of infrared-luminous galaxies at z ~ 1-3. Integrating the counts to 60 uJy, we derive a lower limit on the 24 micron background intensity of 1.9 +/- 0.6 nW m-2 sr-1 of which the majority (~ 60%) stems from sources fainter than 0.4 mJy. Extrapolating to fainter flux densities, sources below 60 uJy contribute 0.8 {+0.9/-0.4} nW m-2 sr-1 to the background, which provides an estimate of the total 24 micron background of 2.7 {+1.1/-0.7} nW m-2 sr-1., Comment: Accepted to the ApJS (Spitzer special issue); 5 pages, 3 color figures, uses emulateapj class

We derive galaxy source counts at 70 and 160 microns using the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) to map the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) and other fields. At 70 microns, our observations extend upwards about 2 orders of magnitude in flux density from a threshold of 15 mJy, and at 160 microns they extend about an order of magnitude upward from 50 mJy. The counts are consistent with previous observations on the bright end. Significant evolution is detected at the faint end of the counts in both bands, by factors of 2-3 over no-evolution models. This evolution agrees well with models that indicate most ofthe faint galaxies lie at redshifts between 0.7 and 0.9. The new Spitzer data already resolve about 23% of the Cosmic Far Infrared Background at 70 microns and about 7% at 160 microns., Comment: Small modifications to match printed version. We use the source counts measured with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) at 24, 70, and 160 microns to determine the 5-sigma confusion limits due to extragalactic sources: 56 micro-Jy, 3.2 and 40 mJy at 24, 70 and 160 microns, respectively. We have examined the occurrence of Extremely Red Objects (EROs) in the fields of 13 luminous quasars (11 radio-loud and two radio-quiet) at 1.8 < z < 3.0. The average surface density of K_s<=19 mag EROs is two-three times higher than in large, random-field surveys, and the excess is significant at the $\approx 3$ sigma level even after taking into account that the ERO distribution is highly inhomogeneous. This is the first systematic investigation of the surface density of EROs in the fields of radio-loud quasars above z=2, and shows that a large number of the fields contain clumps of EROs, similar to what is seen only in the densest areas in random-field surveys. The high surface densities and angular distribution of EROs suggest that the excess originates in high-z galaxy concentrations, possibly young clusters of galaxies. The fainter EROs at K_s>19 mag show some evidence of being more clustered in the immediate 20 arcsec region around the quasars, suggesting an association with the quasars.Comparing with predictions from spectral synthesis models, we find that if the $K_s\approx19$ mag ERO excess is associated with the quasars at $z\approx2$, their magnitudes are typical of >~ L* passively evolving galaxies formed at z~3.5 (Omega_m=0.3, Omega_l=0.7, and H0=70 km/s/Mpc). Another interpretation of our results is that the excess originates in concentrations of galaxies at $z\approx1$ lying along the line of sight to the quasars. If this is the case, the EROs may be tracing massive structures responsible for a magnification bias of the quasars., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

The increasing interest in compact astrophysical objects (neutron stars, binaries, galactic black holes) has stimulated the search for rigorous methods, which allow a systematic general relativistic description of such objects. This paper is meant to demonstrate the use of the inverse scattering method, which allows, in particular cases, the treatment of rotating body problems. The idea is to replace the investigation of the matter region of a rotating body by the formulation of boundary values along the surface of the body. In this way we construct solutions describing rotating black holes and disks of dust ("galaxies"). Physical properties of the solutions and consequences of the approach are discussed. Images at 12.5 microns of nuclei of three nearby Seyfert galaxies -- NGC 1275, NGC 4151 and NGC 7469 -- have been obtained with the Keck 10-m Telescope. NGC 7469 is resolved and deconvolution delineates a structure <0.04"x0.08" or <13x26 pc at a position angle of 135deg. From a comparison with structure seen at millimeter wavelengths, this structure is interpreted as a disk aligned with the molecular gas in the central few hundred parsecs of the galaxy. NGC 1275 and NGC 4151 are not resolved; limits on the sizes of these nuclei are 0.08" and 0.16", corresponding to physical spatial scales of 28 and 10 pc. The lower limits to the brightness temperatures implied by these size limits and the measured flux densities are within ~50K of the 12 micron to 25 micron color temperatures of these systems as inferred from IRAS observations. The angular size limits are within a factor of 2.5 of the sizes required to spatially resolve thermal emission from dust heated by a central luminosity source. These sizes preclude significant contributions to the nuclear infrared emission from star forming regions., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, A.J. in press

High resolution, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) near-infrared and Keck mid-infrared images of the heavily extinguished, infrared luminous galaxy NGC 4418 are presented. These data make it possible to observe the imbedded near-infrared structure on scales of 10-20 pc, and to constrain the size of the mid-infrared emitting region. The 1.1-2.2 um data of NGC 4418 show no clear evidence of nuclear star clusters or of a reddened active galactic nucleus. Instead, the nucleus of the galaxy consists of a ~100-200 pc linear structure with fainter structures extending radially outward. The near-infrared colors of the linear feature are consistent with a 10-300 Myr starburst suffering moderate levels (few magnitudes) of visual extinction. At 7.9-24.5 um, NGC 4418 has estimated size upper limits in the range of 30-80 pc. These dimensions are consistent with the highest resolution radio observations obtained to date of NGC 4418, as well as the size of 50-70 pc expected for a blackbody with a temperature derived from the 25 um, 60 um, and 100 um flux densities of the galaxy. Further, a spectral energy distribution constructed from the multi-wavelength mid-infrared observations show the strong silicate absorption feature at 10 um, consistent with previous mid-infrared observations of NGC 4418. An infrared surface brightness of 2.1x10^13 L_sun kpc^-2 is derived for NGC 4418. Such a value, though consistent with the surface brightness of warm ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs: L_IR [8-1000 um] >~ 10^12 L_sun) such as IRAS 05189-2524 and IRAS 08572+3915, is not large enough to distinguish NGC 4418 as a galaxy powered by an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN), as opposed to a lower surface brightness starburst., Comment: LaTex, 7 pages, including 2 jpg figures and 3 postscript figures, AJ, in press (May, 2003)

We report on a study of the surface density of Extremely Red Objects (EROs) in the fields of 13 radio-loud quasars at 1.8 < z < 3.0 covering a total area of 61.7 sqr arcmin. There is a large variation in the ERO surface density from field to field, and as many as 30--40 % of the fields have roughly 4--5 times more EROs than what is expected from a random distribution. The average surface density exceeds the value found in large random-field surveys by a factor of 2--3, a result which is significant at the >3 sigma level. Hence, it appears that the quasar lines of sight are biassed towards regions of high ERO density. This might be caused by clusters or groups of galaxies physically associated with the quasars. However, an equally likely possibility is that the observed ERO excess is part of overdensities in the ERO population along the line of sight to the quasars. It is shown that the class of asymptotically flat solutions to the axisymmetric and stationary vacuum Einstein equations with reflection symmetry of the metric is uniquely characterized by a simple relation for the Ernst potential on the upper part of the symmetry axis. A new class of exact solutions to the axisymmetric and stationary vacuum Einstein equations containing n arbitrary complex parameters and one arbitrary real solution of the axisymmetric three-dimensional Laplace equation is presented. We have obtained the first detection of spectral absorption lines in one of the high-velocity stars in the vicinity of the Galaxy's central supermassive black hole. Both Brgamma (2.1661 micron) and He I (2.1126 micron) are seen in absorption in S0-2 with equivalent widths (2.8+-0.3 Ang & 1.7+-0.4 Ang) and an inferred stellar rotational velocity (220+-40 km/s) that are consistent with that of an O8-B0 dwarf, which suggests that it is a massive (~15 Msun), young (<10 Myr) main sequence star. This presents a major challenge to star formation theories, given the strong tidal forces that prevail over all distances reached by S0-2 in its current orbit (130 - 1900 AU) and the difficulty in migrating this star inward during its lifetime from further out where tidal forces should no longer preclude star formation. The radial velocity measurements (-510+-40 km/s) and our reported proper motions for S0-2 strongly constrain its orbit, providing a direct measure of the black hole mass of 4.1(+-0.6)x10^6(Ro/8kpc)^3 Msun. The Keplerian orbit parameters have uncertainities that are reduced by a factor of 2-3 compared to previously reported values and include, for the first time, an independent solution for the dynamical center; this location, while consistent with the nominal infrared position of Sgr A*, is localized to a factor of 5 more precisely (+-2 milli-arcsec). Furthermore, the ambiguity in the inclination of the orbit is resolved with the addition of the radial velocity measurement, indicating that the star is behind the black hole at the time of closest approach and counter-revolving against the Galaxy. With further radial velocity measurements in the next few years, the orbit of S0-2 will provide the most robust estimate of the distance to the Galactic Center., Comment: 14 pages, Latex, Accepted for Publication in ApJ Letters

We present near-infrared imaging and spectroscopic observations of two FR II high-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs), 4C 40.36 (z=2.3) and 4C 39.37 (z=3.2), obtained with the Hubble, Keck, and Hale Telescopes. High resolution images were taken with filters both in and out of strong emission lines, and together with the spectroscopic data, the properties of the line and continuum emissions were carefully analyzed. Our analysis of 4C 40.36 and 4C 39.37 shows that strong emission lines (e.g., [O III] 5007 A and H alpha+[N II]) contribute to the broad-band fluxes much more significantly than previously estimated (80% vs. 20-40%), and that when the continuum sources are imaged through line-free filters, they show an extremely compact morphology with a high surface brightness. If we use the R^1/4-law parametrization, their effective radii (r(e)) are only 2-3 kpc while their restframe B-band surface brightnesses at r(e) are I(B) ~ 18 mag/arcsec^2. Compared with z ~ 1 3CR radio galaxies, the former is x3-5 smaller, while the latter is 1-1.5 mag brighter than what is predicted from the I(B)-r(e) correlation. Although exponential profiles produce equally good fits for 4C 40.36 and 4C 39.37, this clearly indicates that with respect to the z~1 3CR radio galaxies, the light distribution of these two HzRGs is much more centrally concentrated. Spectroscopically, 4C 40.36 shows a flat (fnu=const) continuum while 4C 39.37 shows a spectrum as red as that of a local giant elliptical galaxy. Although this difference may be explained in terms of a varying degree of star formation, the similarities of their surface brightness profiles and the submillimeter detection of 4C 39.37 might suggest that the intrinsic spectra is equally blue (young stars or an AGN), and that the difference is the amount of reddening., Comment: 30 pages, 6 tables, 10 figures; Accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal

Low spectral resolution (delta lambda/lambda ~ 50) mid-infrared observations with high angular resolution (0.3--0.5'') using the Long Wavelength Spectrometer on the Keck I Telescope are reported of the nuclei of five highly luminous infrared bright galaxies. Spectra of eight distinct nuclei, ranging in luminosity from 10^11 L_sun to >10^12 L_sun have been obtained. Four of the nuclei show the characteristic PAH emission features, i.e. 11.3 micron emission as well as the 8.6 micron shoulder of the 7.7 micron band. The other nuclei show either weak PAH emission bands or no evidence for these bands. The high spatial resolution of the observations reveals extended emission in the 11.3 micron PAH band associated with several of the compact nuclear sources. When proper account is taken of the diffuse PAH emission, most of the compact sources show little or no directly associated PAH emission. The diffuse PAH emission is extended over spatial scales of 100--500 pc; its presence shows that there is significant circumnuclear UV/optical emission exciting the aromatic bands, most likely associated with circumnuclear starbursts. After the spectra of the nuclear sources are corrected for the spectrum of the diffuse PAH emission, the peak apparent silicate optical depth at 9.7 microns can be as great as 15, corresponding to > 150 magnitudes of visible light extinction. Because of the large silicate optical depths, mid-infrared spectra are not probing the nature of the true nuclei in the most opaque compact sources., Comment: 21 pages, 4 tables, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in AJ

Observations for seven infrared luminous starburst galaxies are reported in the mid-infrared from 8 - 18 microns using the Keck Telescopes with spatial resolution approaching the diffraction limit. All of the galaxies observed show evidence of strong interactions based on optical morphologies. For these galaxies, a substantial fraction, usually more than 50%, of the infrared luminosity is generated in regions ranging in sizes from 100pc -- 1 Kpc. Nuclear starbursts often dominate the infrared luminosity, but this is not always true. In some galaxies, most notably NGC 6090, substantial infrared luminosity greatly in excess of the nuclear luminosity is generated in regions associated with the physical interaction between two galaxies. The radio emission is a good tracer of the location of high luminosity young stars. The visual/ultraviolet radiation output of the nearby star forming galaxies is dominated by emission from regions that are generally not producing the copious infrared luminosity of the systems. The regions of high infrared luminosity in local starburst galaxies are significantly smaller than the galaxies as a whole. The integrated spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these galaxies are very different from the SEDs of the regions of star formation. If the SEDs of star-forming regions in these galaxies reflect the SEDs found in forming galaxies at high redshift, the distant galaxies should be dominated by the mid and far-infrared luminosity output far more than the integrated luminous output of nearby starburst galaxies would suggest., Comment: 33pages, 4 tables, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal

Mid-infrared observations of the central source of NGC 1068 have been obtained with a spatial resolution in the deconvolved image of 0.1" (~ 7pc). The central source is extended by ~1" in the north-south direction but appears unresolved in the east-west direction over most of its length. About two-thirds of its flux can be ascribed to a core structure which is itself elongated north-south and does not show a distinct unresolved compact source. The source is strongly asymmetric, extending significantly further to the north than to the south. The morphology of the mid-infrared emission appears similar to that of the radio jet, and has features which correlate with the images in [O III]. Its 12.5-24.5 micron color temperature ranges from 215 to 260 K and does not decrease smoothly with distance from the core. Silicate absorption is strongest in the core and to the south and is small in the north. The core, apparently containing two-thirds of the bolometric luminosity of the inner 4" diameter area, may be explained by a thick, dusty torus near the central AGN viewed at an angle of ~65 deg to its plane. There are, however, detailed difficulties with existing models, especially the narrow east-west width of the thin extended mid-infrared "tongue" to the north of the core. We interpret the tongue as re-processed visual and ultraviolet radiation that is strongly beamed and that originates in the AGN., Comment: 42 pages, 2 tables, 9 figures; Accepted for publication in AJ

We present Keck high-resolution near-IR (2.2 microns; FWHM~0.15") and mid-IR (12.5 microns; FWHM~0.4") images of APM08279+5255, a z=3.91 IR-luminous BALQSO with a prodigious apparent bolometric luminosity of 5x10^{15} Lsun, the largest known in the universe. The K-band image shows that this system consists of three components, all of which are likely to be the gravitationally lensed images of the same background object, and the 12.5 micron image shows a morphology consistent with such an image configuration. Our lens model suggests that the magnification factor is ~100 from the restframe UV to mid-IR, where most of the luminosity is released. The intrinsic bolometric luminosity and IR luminosity of APM08279+5255 are estimated to be 5x10^{13} Lsun and 1x10^{13} Lsun, respectively. This indicates that APM 08279+5255 is intriniscally luminous, but it is not the most luminous object known. As for its dust contents, little can be determined with the currently available data due to the uncertainties associated with the dust emissivity and the possible effects of differential magnification. Observations of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with an achieved resolution approaching the diffraction limit in the mid-infrared from 8 - 25 $\mu$m using the Keck Telescopes are reported. We find extremely compact structures, with spatial scales of $< 0.3''$ (diameter) in six of the seven ULIRGs observed. These compact sources emit between 30% and 100% of the mid-infrared energy from these galaxies. We have utilized the compact mid-infrared structures as a diagnostic of whether an AGN or a compact (100 -- 300 pc) starburst is the primary power source in these ULIRGs. In Markarian 231, the upper limit on the diameter of the 12.5 $\mu$m source, 0.13$''$, shows that the size of the infrared source must increase with increasing wavelength, consistent with AGN models. In IRAS 05189-2524 and IRAS 08572+3915 there is strong evidence that the source size increases with increasing wavelength. This suggests heating by a central source rather than an extended luminosity source, consistent with the optical classification as an AGN. The compact mid-infrared sources seen in the other galaxies cannot be used to distinguish the ultimate luminosity source. If these ULIRGs are powered by compact starbursts, the star formation rates seen in the central few hundred parsecs far exceed the global rates seen in nearby starburst galaxies, and approach the surface brightness of individual clusters in nearby starburst galaxies., Comment: 33pages, 6 tables, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in AJ

We present high resolution imaging of the nucleus of NGC4258 from 1 micron to 18 microns. Our observations reveal that the previously discovered compact source of emission is unresolved even at the near-infrared resolution of about 0.2 arcsec FWHM which corresponds to about 7 pc at the distance of the galaxy. This is consistent with the source of emission being the region in the neighborhood of the purported 3.5*10^7 M_sun black hole. After correcting for about 18 mags of visual extinction, the infrared data are consistent with a F_nu \propto nu^(-1.4+/-0.1) spectrum from 1.1 micron to 18 micron, implying a non-thermal origin. Based on this spectrum, the total extinction corrected infrared luminosity (1-20 micron) of the central source is 2*10^8 L_sun. We argue that the infrared spectrum and luminosity of the central source obviates the need for a substantial contribution from a standard, thin accretion disk at these wavelengths and calculate the accretion rate through an advection dominated accretion flow to be Mdot \sim 10^(-3) M_sun/yr. The agreement between these observations and the theoretical spectral energy distribution for advection dominated flows provides evidence for the existence of an advection dominated flow in this low luminosity AGN., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, Appearing in Mar 2000 ApJ vol. 531

Using NICMOS on HST, we have imaged the emission-line nebulae and the line-free continuum in 4C 40.36, a ultra-steep spectrum FR II radio galaxy at z=2.269. The line-free continuum was found to be extremely compact and symmetric while the emission-line nebulae seen in H-alpha+[N II] show very clumpy structures spreading almost linearly over 16 kpc. However, this linear structure is clearly misaligned from the radio axis. The SED of the line-free continuum is very flat, suggesting that if the continuum emission is produced by a single source, it is likely to be a young bursting stellar population or scattered AGN light. Near infrared imaging and spectroscopic observations of the extremely red object (R-K~ 7 mag) CL 0939+4713 B have been obtained with the Near Infrared Camera on the Keck I Telescope of the W. M. Keck Observatory. The imaging shows a slightly elongated structure, while the spectroscopy shows a continuum break that allows us to determine the redshift of z = 1.58 + 0.01/-0.03 for this system. The fits of a range of models to the infrared spectrum suggests that it is predominantly an old (> 10^9 yrs) stellar system that suffers little extinction, while the measurerd R and I magnitudes suggests an age of ~ 3 x 10^8 years. The limit on the equivalent width of any emission line in the infrared spectrum argues that CL 0939+4713 B is not an actively star forming galaxy. This system, though similar in R-K color to HR 10 [also known as J1645+46] (Dey et al. 1999), is much different in morphology and emission line strengths, demonstrating the heterogeneity of extremely red extragalactic objects (EROs) selected on the basis of large values of R-K., Comment: Latex with AAS format, 3 postscript figures, AJ, accepted, includes new I data, new fig 3 and revised interpretation

The nearby Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 1068 was observed with speckle imaging techniques in the near-infrared H-band (1.6 microns) at the Hale 200-inch Telescope and K-band (2.2 microns) at the 10 m Keck I Telescope. Images with diffraction limited or near-diffraction limited resolutions of 0.''05 - 0.''1 were obtained and used to search for structure in the nuclear region. Images of the nucleus of NGC 1068 reveal an extended region of emission which accounts for nearly 50% of the nuclear flux at K-band. This region extends 10 pc on either side of an unresolved point source nucleus which is at most, 0.''02 or 1.4 pc in size. Both the point source and the newly imaged extended emission are very red, with identical H-K colors corresponding to a color temperature of 800 K. While the point source is of a size to be consistent with grains in thermal equilibrium with the nuclear source, the extended emission is not. It must consist either of nuclear emission which has been reflected off an extended dusty disk or of small grains raised to transiently high temperatures by reflected UV photons., Comment: accepted to AJ, AAS LaTeX and epsfig, 22 pages incl. 5 ps figures

Twenty five low redshift quasars have been monitored for several decades at five near- and mid-infrared wavelengths to detect rapid variations which would indicate that a nonthermal component was present in the "10 micron bump". Such variability has apparently been detected in several radio loud quasars and in the radio quiet quasar PG1535+547. With a infrared luminosity of nearly 10^13 Lsuns, IRAS 09104+4109 is the most luminous galaxy with z<0.5 in the IRAS All Sky Survey. A radio-loud Seyfert 2 type optical spectrum, a cD host galaxy in a rich cluster, and a massive cooling flow make IRAS 09104+4109 unique among ultraluminous infrared galaxies. Cannibalized cluster members and the cooling intercluster medium may contribute both the fuel and the dust needed to re-radiate the power of IRAS 09104+4109 into the far-infrared. We have imaged IRAS 09104+4109 in the WFPC2 F622W, F814W, and FR680N filters on the HST to obtain rest frame 4300A, 5700A, and [OIII] emission line images on sub-kpc scales. IRAS 09104+4109 displays a complex morphology on the smallest scales, with radiating filaments, an asymmetric [OIII] nebula, and a number of very faint, irregular blue objects surrounding the cD galaxy. We present deep images of the field of gamma-ray burst (GRB) 990123 obtained in a broad-band UV/visible bandpass with the Hubble Space Telescope, and deep near-infrared images obtained with the Keck-I 10-m telescope. Both the HST and Keck images show that the optical transient (OT) is clearly offset by 0.6 arcsec from an extended object, presumably the host galaxy. This galaxy is the most likely source of the metallic-line absorption at z = 1.6004 seen in the spectrum of the OT. With magnitudes V_{C} ~ 24.6 +/- 0.2 and K = 21.65 +/- 0.30 mag this corresponds to an L ~ 0.7 L_* galaxy, assuming that it is located at z = 1.6. The estimated unobscured star formation rate is SFR ~ 6 M_sun/yr, which is not unusually high for normal galaxies at comparable redshifts. The strength of the observed metallic absorption lines is suggestive of a relatively high metallicity of the gas, and thus of a chemically evolved system which may be associated with a massive galaxy. It is also indicative of a high column density of the gas, typical of damped Ly-alpha systems at high redshifts. We conclude that this is the host galaxy of GRB 990123. No other obvious galaxies are detected within the same projected radius from the OT. There is thus no evidence for strong gravitational lensing magnification of this burst, and some alternative explanation for its remarkable energetics may be required. The observed offset of the OT from the center of its apparent host galaxy, 5.5 +/- 0.9 proper kpc (projected) in the galaxy's rest-frame, both refutes the possibility that GRBs are related to galactic nuclear activity and supports models of GRBs which involve the death and/or merger of massive stars. High-resolution, 1.10, 2.05, 2.12, and 2.15 micron imaging of the gravitationally lensed system FSC10214+4724 are presented. These data extend HST observations of the lens system to redder wavelengths, thus providing the highest resolution images to date of the rest-frame optical and narrow-line (i.e., H-alpha+[N II]) regions of the background quasar. The length of the arc in the wide-band continuum images increases with increasing wavelength, and the H-alpha+[N II] emission has a length in between that of the 1.10 and 2.05 microns. The structure of the arc changes from having an eastern and western peak at 1.10 microns to a single peak in the center at 2.05 microns. The changing structure and length of the arc can be understood in terms of a model where the background quasar consists of a region of scattered AGN light that dominates at 1.10 microns (rest-frame 3300 angstroms), surrounded by a more extended narrow-line region. We present imaging polarimetry of the extremely luminous, redshift 2.3 IRAS source FSC10214+4724. The observations were obtained with HST's Faint Object Camera in the F437M filter, which is free of strong emission lines. The 0.7 arcsec long arc is unresolved to 0.04 arcsec FWHM in the transverse direction, and has an integrated polarization of 28 +/- 3 percent, in good agreement with ground-based observations. The polarization position angle varies along the arc by up to 35 deg. The overall position angle is 62 +/- 3 deg east of north. No counterimage is detected to B = 27.5 mag ($3\sigma$), giving an observed arc to counterimage flux ratio greater than 250, considerably greater than the flux ratio of 100 measured previously in the I-band. This implies that the configuration of the object in the source plane at the B-band is different from that at I-band, and/or that the lensing galaxy is dusty., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures. Images of Arp 220 from 3.45 to 24.5 $\mu$m with 0.5'' resolution are presented which clearly separate the nucleus into at least two components. The western component is about three times more luminous than the eastern component, but the silicate absorption in the fainter, eastern component is roughly 50% greater than the absorption in the western component. Each component is marginally resolved. The two components seen at 24.5 $\mu$m are identified with the two radio components. The western source most likely coincides with the high extinction disk previously suggested to exist in Arp 220, while the eastern nucleus is identified with a faint highly reddened source seen in HST 2.2 $\mu$m NICMOS images. The two nuclei together account for essentially all of the measured 24.5 $\mu$m flux density. Two models are presented, both of which fit the observations. In one, the majority of the total luminosity is produced in an extended star formation region and in the other most of the luminosity is produced in the compact but extincted regions associated with the two nuclei seen at 24.5 $\mu$m. In both pictures, substantial luminosity at 100 $\mu$m emerges from a component having a diameter of 2--3'' ($\sim$1kpc)., Comment: LaTeX with AAS format, 3 postscript figures, ApJ, accepted

Imaging at 1.25 and 2.20 microns has been obtained of the field containing the galaxy (RD1) found at redshift 5.34 by Dey et al.(1998). This galaxy has been detected at 1.25 microns, while the lower redshift (z=4.02) galaxy also found in the same field by Dey et al. was detected at both 1.25 and 2.20 microns. Comparison to stellar population synthesis models indicates that if RD1 is a young (< 100 Myr old) galaxy, significant reddening (A(V) > 0.5 mag) is indicated. Combined with observations of other high redshift systems, these data show that dust is likely to be an important component of young galaxies even at redshifts of z > 5. The extinction-corrected monochromatic luminosity of RD1 at 1500 angstroms is then a factor of about three larger than L(1500)* as determined by Dickinson (1998) for z ~ 3 starburst galaxies. Near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy have been obtained of the gravitationally lensed galaxy at z=4.92 discovered in HST images by Franx et al. (1997). Images at 1.2, 1.6 and 2.2 microns show the same arc morphology as the HST images. The spectrum with resolution \lambda / \Delta\lambda ~ 70 shows no emission lines with equivalent width stronger than 100 A in the rest frame wavelength range 0.34 to 0.40 microns. In particular, [OII]3727 A and [NeIII]3869 A are not seen. The energy distribution is quite blue, as expected for a young stellar population with the observed Ly alpha flux. The spectral energy distribution can be fit satisfactorily for such a young stellar population when absorption by dust is included. The models imply a reddening 0.1 mag < E(B-V) < 0.4 mag. The stellar mass of the lensed galaxy lies in the range of 2 to 16 x 10^9 Msun. This is significantly higher than estimates based on the HST data alone. We have imaged the z=3.594 radio galaxy 4C +19.71 in the light of the redshifted [OIII] 5007 angstrom emission line, using a narrow-band filter centered at 2.3 microns with the Near Infrared Camera on the Keck Telescope. The [OIII] nebula of 4C +19.71 has a size of 74 x 9 kpc, and a luminosity of 3 x 10^37 W. The rest frame equivalent width of the 5007 line, averaged over the entire nebula, is 560 angstroms. The length of the major axis of the [OIII] emission is nearly identical to the separation of the radio lobes seen at 1465 MHz (Rottgering, et al. 1994), and the position angle of the nebula is the same as that of the two radio lobes. In addition, 4C +19.71 follows the optical emission line vs. radio power correlation seen in other powerful radio galaxies. The [OIII] and Lyman alpha emission line luminosities suggest that the ionized gas mass lies in the range of 2 x 10^8 - 10^9 solar masses. The O/H ratio in the nebula is at least a few tenths solar, and may be as high as a factor of three above solar, indicating a previous phase of star formation in 4C +19.71. Thirty five percent of the total K-band flux is contributed by the 5007 angstrom emission line, and the continuum of 4C +19.71 has a K=19.6 mag. This places 4C +19.71 along the K-z relation found for other radio galaxies and radio loud quasars. If the continuum is dominated by starlight, the host galaxy has a rest frame visual luminosity of about 40L*. There are no candidate emission-line objects at the redshift of 4C +19.71 having [OIII] rest frame equivalent widths of more than about 2% that of the radio galaxy itself within a volume of 212 cubic Mpc., Comment: plain LaTex with 3 postscript figures. Near-infrared images of the luminous, high redshift (z=2.1108) radio loud quasar 4C+09.17 reveal a complex structure. The quasar (K=15.76 mag) is surrounded by three "companion" objects having 17.9< K < 20.2 mag at radii of 1.7" < r < 2.9", as well as bright, diffuse emission. The brightest companion has a redshift of z=0.8384 (Lehnert & Becker 1997) and its optical-infrared colors (Lehnert et al. 1997) are consistent with a late-type spiral galaxy at this redshift with a luminosity of about 2L*. This object is likely the galaxy responsible for the strongest MgII absorption line system seen in the spectrum of 4C+09.17 by Barthel et al. (1990). Redshifts are not available for the remaining two companions. The red colors of the second brightest companion appear most consistent with a high redshift star-forming galaxy at z > 1.5. If this object is at the redshift of 4C +09.17 it has a luminosity of about 7L*. The faintest companion has colors which are unlike those expected from either a spiral or an E/S0 galaxy at any redshift associated with the 4C+09.17 system. Since this object lies along the same direction as the radio jet/lobe of 4C+09.17, as well as the extended Ly-alpha emission mapped by Heckman et al. (1991) we suggest that this component can be explained as a combination of strong line emission and scattered QSO light. The resolved, diffuse emission surrounding 4C+09.17 is bright, K~17.0 mag, and about one magnitude redder in J-K than the quasar. If this emission is starlight, a very luminous elliptical host galaxy is implied for 4C+09.17. Scattered and reddened AGN light, emission line gas, and flux from absorbing galaxies along the line of sight may all contribute to this emission., Comment: plain LaTex with 4 postscript figures, MNRAS, accepted

Two deep K-band ($2.2 \mu m$) images, with point-source detection limits of $K=25.2$ mag (one sigma), taken with the Keck Telescope in subfields of the Hubble Deep Field, are presented and analyzed. A sample of objects to K=24 mag is constructed and $V_{606}-I_{814}$ and $I_{814}-K$ colors are measured. By stacking visually selected objects, mean $I_{814}-K$ colors can be measured to very faint levels; the mean $I_{814}-K$ color is constant with apparent magnitude down to $V_{606}=28$ mag., Comment: Replaced with slightly revised source positions and corrected V-I magnitudes (which were incorrect in the Tables and Figure 5). 18 pages. We present an image of the redshift 2.3 IRAS source FSC10214+4724 at 0.8 microns obtained with the HST WFPC2 Planetary Camera. The source appears as an unresolved (< 0.06") arc 0.7" long, with significant substructure along its length. The arc is centered near an elliptical galaxy 1.18" to the north. An unresolved component 100 times fainter than the arc is clearly detected on the opposite side of this galaxy. The most straightforward interpretation is that FSC 10214+4724 is gravitationally lensed by the foreground elliptical galaxy, with the faint component a counterimage of the IRAS source. The brightness of the arc in the HST image is then magnified by ~100 and the intrinsic source diameter is ~0.01" (80 pc) at 0.25 microns rest wavelength. The bolometric luminosity is probably amplified by a smaller factor (~30), yielding an intrinsic luminosity ~2E13 solar luminosities. A detailed lensing model is presented which reproduces the observed morphology and relative flux of the arc and counterimage, and correctly predicts the position angle of the lensing galaxy. The model also predicts reasonable values for the velocity dispersion, mass, and mass-to-light ratio of the lensing galaxy. A redshift for the lensing galaxy of ~0.9 is consistent with the measured surface brightness profile from the image, as well as with the galaxy's SED., Comment: 27 pages, 7 PS fig, uses aastex macros, to appear ApJ 10 April 1996

We have obtained infrared spectra of the star suggested to be the counterpart of the soft gamma-ray repeater (SGR) 1806-20. We found strong emission lines similar to those seen in the spectra of the rare Luminous Blue Variables and B[e] stars. A He I absorption line is also seen, from which we infer a spectral type O9--B2. This classification, in combination with the minimum distance of $\simgt6$ kpc inferred from its extinction, makes the star one of the most luminous in the Galaxy. We infer that it is a companion to SGR 1806-20, and suggest that the presence of a companion is somehow related to the SGR phenomenon., Comment: 5 pages, AASTEX text+table and 2 PostScript figures (needs LaTeX style files aaspptwo.sty, epsf.sty and rotate.sty). The soft gamma-ray repeater (SGR) 1806$-$20 is associated with the center-brightened non-thermal nebula G~10.0$-$0.3, thought to be a plerion. As in other plerions, a steady \Xray\ source, AX~1805.7$-$2025, has been detected coincident with the peak of the nebular radio emission. Vasisht et al.\ have shown that the radio peak has a core-jet appearance, and argue that the core marks the true position of the SGR. At optical wavelengths, we detect three objects in the vicinity of the radio core. Only for the star closest to the core, barely visible in the optical but bright in the infrared ($K=8.4\,$mag.), the reddening is consistent with the high extinction ($A_V\simeq30\,$mag.) that has been inferred for AX~1805.7$-$2025. From the absence of CO band absorption, we infer that the spectral type of this star is earlier than late~G/early~K. The large extinction probably arises in a molecular cloud located at a distance of 6$\,$kpc, which means that the star, just like AX~1805.7$-$2025, is in or behind this cloud. This implies that the star is a supergiant. Since supergiants are rare, a chance coincidence with the compact radio core is very unlikely. To our knowledge, there are only three other examples of luminous stars embedded in non-thermal radio nebulae, SS~433, \mbox{Cir X-1} and G~70.7+1.2. Given this and the low coincidence probability, we suggest that the bright star is physically associated with SGR~1806$-$20, making it the first stellar identification of a high-energy transient., Comment: 7 pages, AASTeX (needs LaTeX style files aaspptwo.sty and epsf.sty, plus PostScript figure).
