Abstract

This publication, the second in a series of three monographs on solutions to the dropout problem in Canada, adopts the view that the "cracks" in human services systems could be "mortared" at the level of local schools with services and programs that include academic, social, emotional, and vocational elements. The monograph acknowledges that schools and teachers are second in importance only to home and parents in the development of children and youth and recognizes that schools and teachers alone cannot offer the broad range of educational and social services that students need. It identifies the need for coordination of services and collaboration between education and other organizations as a top priority. The monograph also identifies potential partners in education; suggests procedures and strategies to recruit and involve the community in schools; and outlines possible roles and functions for individuals and interest groups in the community, such as school boards, teachers, business/industry, media, and universities. Abstract

This booklet, the third and last in a series of monographs on solutions to the problem of school dropouts, is designed to provide guidance for local organizations to address the needs of students at risk of dropping out. It sets forth the goals and objectives of a planning approach that illustrates how local communities could organize to increase graduation rates. The goals, listed in order of importance as determined by representatives of the education field who participated in two national forums of Canadian educators, include: (1) collaboration between organizations and coordination of services; (2) broad review of purpose and goals of education aimed at renewal/restructuring of education; (3) definition of dropout and at-risk students; (4) focus on prevention in the early years; and (5) development of schools' ability to respond as needed to individual students. This publication, the first in a series of three monographs on school dropout research, is designed to provide background information as a foundation for local programs planning throughout the Canadian provinces. Topics in this monograph include definitions of dropouts, characteristics of persons who drop out of school, factors that identify at-risk students, characteristics of programs or approaches that have met with some success in preventing at-risk students from leaving school before graduation, and implications for special education. Programs that offer possible remedies to the dropout problem are discussed under three broad categories: :"fix the child,""fix components of the system," and "restructure the system." 11. Innovations in Distance Education Applied to the Professional Development of Teachers. (A Canadian Perspective).

Abstract

This paper presents a definition of distance education and a rationale for it both in pragmatic, problem-solving terms and in relation to a larger view of society. The geographic, political, educational, and technological context of distance education in Canada is then discussed. Traditional correspondence courses, satellite-delivered credit and non-credit courses, teleconferencing, and computer networking/electronic mail for the continuing professional education of teachers in British Columbia are described. A course on the study of exceptional children, which was broadcast live via satellite, is used as a case study to illustrate issues in course production and design, production standards, and cost. The results of pre- and post-course questionnaires covering participant characteristics, attitudes toward exceptional children, attitudes toward telecourses, program quality, live interactive television versus passive viewers, course requirements, and preferred viewing time are summarized, and telecourses are compared with traditional classroom instruction. A discussion of future directions for distance education concludes the paper. (29 references) (MES)

Abstract

VEGF is a potent angiogenic factor that promotes hepatocyte growth, increases permeability of blood vessels, and induces vasodilatation, and may accelerate engraftment and function of transplanted hepatocytes. The aim was to study the effect of VEGF on early hepatocyte engraftment. Thirty-two Lewis syngeneic female rats underwent 70% partial hepatectomy. Eighteen received 240 ng VEGF165 and 14 received saline for control. Thereafter, intrasplenic transplantation of 107 male hepatocytes was done. Semiquantitative analysis of PCR product of the SRY region of the Y-chromosome was performed. Paraffin-embedded sections were stained for H&E and for PCNA immunostaining. By PCR, male hepatocytes were identified in 8 livers out of 14 VEGF-treated rats at 24 – 48 h, compared with only 1 liver out of 8 controls. Transplanted cells were seen within portal vessels radicles in 7 out of 14 VEGF-treated rats for as long as 48 h posttransplantation, compared with only one control liver at 24 h. There was no histological sign of cell injury to transplanted or adjacent cells. Two weeks after transplantation male transplanted cells were identified in two out of four rats treated with hVEGF165 and in one out of six rats treated with saline. No transplanted cells were detected within portal tracts 14 days after transplantation. hVEGF165 enhances the presence of transplanted hepatocytes within portal vessels after transplantation. We suggest an additional mechanism for cell engraftment, whereby transplanted hepatocytes first stick to each other in the portal radicles. Later they become included in the liver parenchyma as groups of organized cells in a process stimulated by VEGF.

Abstract

We developed micropore membrane inlet mass spectrometer (MMIMS) probes to rapidly measure inert-gas partial pressures in small blood samples. The mass spectrometer output was linearly related to inert-gas partial pressure (r2 of 0.996-1.000) and was nearly independent of large variations in inert-gas solubility in liquid samples. We infused six inert gases into five pentobarbital-anesthetized New Zealand rabbits and used the MMIMS system to measure inert-gas partial pressures in systemic and pulmonary arterial blood and in mixed expired gas samples. The retention and excretion data were transformed into distributions of ventilation to-perfusion ratios (V̇(A)/Q̇) with the use of linear regression techniques. Distributions of V̇(A)/Q̇ were unimodal and broad, consistent with prior reports in the normal rabbit. Total blood sample volume for each V̇(A)/Q̇ distribution was 4 ml, and analysis time was 8 min. MMIMS provides a convenient method to perform the multiple inert-gas elimination technique rapidly and with small blood sample volumes.

Abstract

The HER2/neu oncogene encodes a receptor-like tyrosine kinase whose overexpression in breast cancer predicts poor prognosis and resistance to conventional therapies. However, the mechanisms underlying aggressiveness of HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2)-overexpressing tumors remain incompletely understood. Because it assists epidermal growth factor (EGF) and neuregulin receptors, we overexpressed HER2 in MCF10A mammary cells and applied growth factors. HER2-overexpressing cells grown in extracellular matrix formed filled spheroids, which protruded outgrowths upon growth factor stimulation. Our transcriptome analyses imply a two-hit model for invasive growth: HER2-induced proliferation and evasion from anoikis generate filled structures, which are morphologically and transcriptionally analogous to preinvasive patients' lesions. In the second hit, EGF escalates signaling and transcriptional responses leading to invasive growth. Consistent with clinical relevance, a gene expression signature based on the HER2/EGF-activated transcriptional program can predict poorer prognosis of a subgroup of HER2-overexpressing patients.
