The degradation of water resources available for human consumption is increasing with the continuous release of chemicals into aquatic environments and their inefficient removal in wastewater treatment. Several watersheds in Brazil, such as the Iguaçu River, are affected by multiple sources of pollution and lack information about their pollution status. The Iguaçu River basin (IRB) has great socioeconomic and environmental relevance to both the supply of water resources and its considerable hydroelectric potential, as well as for the high rate of endemism of its ichthyofauna. Also, the IRB is home to large conservation units, such as the Iguaçu National Park, recognized by UNESCO as a natural World Heritage Site. Thus, this article discusses the chemical pollution in the IRB approaching: (i) the main sources of pollution; (ii) the occurrence of inorganic and organic micropollutants; (iii) the available ecotoxicological data; and (iv) the socioeconomic impacts in three regions of the upper, middle, and lower IRB. Different studies have reported relevant levels of emerging contaminants, persistent organic pollutants, toxic metals, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons detected in the water and sediment samples, especially in the upper IRB region, associated with domestic and industrial effluents. Additionally, significant concentrations of pesticides and toxic metals were also detected in the lower IRB, revealing that agricultural practices are also relevant sources of chemicals for this watershed. More recently, studies indicated an association between fish pathologies and the detection of micropollutants in the water and sediments in the IRB. The identification of the main sources of pollutants, associated with the distribution of hazardous chemicals in the IRB, and their potential effects on the biota, as described in this review, represent an important strategy to support water management by public authorities for reducing risks to the local endemic biodiversity and exposed human populations. This study aimed to investigate the toxicity and endocrine disrupting potential of a complex mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the estrogen pathway using hepatocytes of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, the hepatocytes were exposed to various concentrations of the PAH mixture, and multiple endpoints were evaluated to assess their effects on cell viability, gene expression, oxidative stress markers, and efflux activity. The results revealed that the PAH mixture had limited effects on hepatocyte metabolism and cell adhesion, as indicated by the non-significant changes observed in MTT metabolism, neutral red retention, and crystal violet staining. However, significant alterations were observed in the expression of genes related to the estrogen pathway. Specifically, vitellogenin (vtg) exhibited a substantial increase of approximately 120% compared to the control group. Similarly, estrogen receptor 2 (esr2) showed a significant upregulation of approximately 90%. In contrast, no significant differences were observed in the expression of estrogen receptor 1 (esr1) and the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (gper1). Furthermore, the PAH mixture elicited complex responses in oxidative stress markers. While reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) levels remained unchanged, the activity of catalase (Cat) was significantly reduced, whereas superoxide dismutase (Sod) activity, glutathione S-transferase (Gst) activity, and non-protein thiols levels were significantly elevated. In addition, the PAH mixture significantly influenced efflux activity, as evidenced by the increased efflux of rhodamine and calcein, indicating alterations in multixenobiotic resistance (MXR)-associated proteins. Overall, these findings, associated with bioinformatic analysis, highlight the potential of the PAH mixture to modulate the estrogen pathway and induce oxidative stress in O. niloticus hepatocytes. Environmental contaminants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), have raised concerns regarding their potential endocrine-disrupting effects on aquatic organisms, including fish. In this study, molecular docking and molecular dynamics techniques were employed to evaluate the endocrine-disrupting potential of PAHs in zebrafish, as a model organism. A virtual screening with 72 PAHs revealed a correlation between the number of PAH aromatic rings and their binding affinity to proteins involved in endocrine regulation. Furthermore, PAHs with the highest binding affinities for each protein were identified: cyclopenta[cd]pyrene for AR (-9.7 kcal/mol), benzo(g)chrysene for ERα (-11.5 kcal/mol), dibenzo(a,e)pyrene for SHBG (-8.7 kcal/mol), dibenz(a,h)anthracene for StAR (-11.2 kcal/mol), and 2,3-benzofluorene for TRα (-9.8 kcal/mol). Molecular dynamics simulations confirmed the stability of the protein-ligand complexes formed by the PAHs with the highest binding affinities throughout the simulations. Additionally, the effectiveness of the protocol used in this study was demonstrated by the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis, which effectively distinguished decoys from true ligands. Surgical ciliated cysts, also known as implantation cysts or postoperative maxillary cysts, are uncommon cystic formations predominantly arising in the posterior maxillary region after radical maxillary sinus surgery. Herein, we present the case of a 28-year-old male patient who had previously undergone orthognathic surgery and later experienced a minor car accident without major consequences. Approximately four years after surgery, the patient sought dental care due to the presence of a painless swelling in the maxillary region. Upon intraoral examination, the swelling extended from the area around the right canine to the upper left molar, covered by red mucosa. Image studies revealed an extensive well-defined osteolytic lesion causing thinning, erosion, buccal cortical plate perforation, and root resorption. An incisional biopsy was performed, and microscopic examination revealed a cystic lesion lined by ciliated respiratory-type epithelium and capsule variably fibrotic with sparse chronic inflammation. The final diagnosis was surgical ciliated cysts. The treatment approach involved decompression followed by enucleation and curettage, with the addition of bone grafting and the application of Leukocyte-Platelet Rich Fibrin (L-PRF). The patient has been under clinical follow-up for approximately 17 months with no signs of recurrence. A careful morphological evaluation is essential to avoid misdiagnosis and ensure a satisfactory treatment approach. Pesticides use increased worldwide with a record in Brazil. Although several works addressed the effects of pesticides on living organisms, only a few considered their mixture, and even fewer tried to unravel their role in tumoral progression. Due to the relevance of cancer, in the present study, the effects of the mixture of pesticides widely used in Brazil (Glyphosate, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, Mancozeb, Atrazine, Acephate, and Paraquat) and their main metabolites (Aminomethylphosphonic Acid, 2,4-diclorophenol, Ethylenethiourea, Desethylatrazine, Methamidophos, and Paraquat) were investigated on the malignancy phenotype of murine melanoma B16-F1 cells after acute (24 h) and chronic (15 days) exposures. The tested concentrations were based on the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) value established by Brazilian legislation. The set of results showed that these chemicals modulate important parameters of tumor progression, affecting the expression of genes related to tumor aggressiveness (Mmp14 and Cd44) and multidrug resistance (Abcb1, Abcc1, and Abcc4), as well as tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (Timp1, Timp2, and Timp3). These findings revealed an absence of cytotoxicity but showed modulation of migration, invasion, and colonization capacity of B16-F1 cells. Together, the results point to some negative ways that exposure to pesticides can affect the progression of melanoma and raise a concern related to the increasing trend in pesticide use in Brazil, as the country is one of the major world food suppliers., (© 2023. Aquatic biota is increasingly being exposed to chemical pollutants due to human activities and the relationship between the level of environmental pollution and fish reproduction is a continuously ongoing issue. The vitellogenin (Vtg) protein synthesis can be induced in the liver of juvenile and male fish after stimulation of the estrogen receptor and therefore, Vtg has been used as a biomarker of xenoestrogen exposure in several fish species. The current study reported the first physicochemical characterization of Vtg from Oreochromis niloticus. Adult male fish were exposed to 17α-ethinylestradiol for Vtg induction. Purified vitellogenin from plasma showed low stability at 25 and 4 °C in saline conditions, and good stability in acidic (low pH) or in heated conditions. The 3D modeling provided useful information on the structure of O. niloticus Vtg showing conserved structural features. According to bioinformatics and experimental results, there are important structural differences between the two chemical forms of Vtg (VtgAb and VtgC) in a phylogenetic context. The present results add information about the development of ecotoxicological immunoassays to study the endocrine disruption in O. niloticus improving the Vtg performance as a biomarker of reproduction in fish., (© 2022. Urban sewage is a source of major contamination in aquatic systems and contributes to environmental and human health disturbances. This study investigates the effects of sewage-polluted waters from Iguaçu River on the health of juvenile Oreochromis niloticus. Two hundred four specimens were exposed to riverine water in four groups: no diluted, 25 and 50 % diluted water and a control group without tested water for 72 days. Biological samples were obtained for histopathological, neurotoxicity, antioxidant defenses, genotoxicity, metallothionines expression and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) metabolites. The results showed histopathological alterations in liver and gills, genotoxic alteration in erythrocytes, reduction of acetylcholinesterase activity in brain and muscle, activation of antioxidant defenses in the liver, recruitment of metals by metallothionein and the detection of PAHs metabolites in bile. These results demonstrate that juveniles of O. niloticus are susceptible to Iguaçu River exposure water and they can be used as indicator of water quality., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. The risk of exposure to toxic metals is a known concern to human populations. The overexposure to Mn can lead to a pathological condition, with symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease. Although toxicity of Mn has been reported, studies in neonates are scarce but necessary, as Mn can cross biological barriers. The present study evaluated if chronic perinatal exposure to Mn at low doses lead to neurotoxic effects in mice, after direct and indirect exposure. Couples of mice were exposed to Mn (0.013, 0.13, and 1.3 mg kg -1 .day -1 ) for 60 days prior to mating, as well as during gestation and lactation. The offspring was distributed into two groups: animals that were not exposed after weaning - parental exposure only (PE); and animals subject to additional 60-day exposure through gavages after weaning - parental and direct exposure (PDE). Neurological effects were evaluated by Mn quantification, behavior tests and biochemical markers in the brain. PDE animals had alterations in short/long-term memory and increased anxiety-like behavior. Exposure to Mn triggered a decrease of glutathione-s-transferase and increase of cholinesterase activity in different regions of the brain. The present study focused on the scenario of confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the state of Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil, from March 2020 to March 2021. We evaluated the evolution of COVID-19 prevalence and death in one municipality from each of the 14 health macro-regions of MG state. Socio-demographic characteristics and variables related to the municipalities were analyzed. The raw dataset used in this study was freely sourced from the website Brasil.io. From the raw dataset, two time series were extracted: the cumulative confirmed cases of COVID-19 and cumulative death counts, and they were compared to the state data using a nowcasting approach. In order to make time series comparisons possible, all data was normalized per 100,000 inhabitants. When analyzing in light of colored wave code interventions initiated in August 2020 in MG, for the majority of the municipalities, there was an absence of clear influence on prevalence and deaths. The national holidays in the first semester of 2020 had a small impact on the COVID-19 prevalence of the municipalities, but the holidays in the second semester of 2020 and beginning of 2021 caused important impacts on COVID-19 prevalence. The low number of ICU beds in some municipalities contributed to the higher number of deaths. The analysis showed here is expected to contribute to the improvement of decision making of the MG government, as it opened a huge possibility to have the total macro-regions and state data analyzed.

We describe a green new method for the synthesis of water-soluble photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs) that were functionalized with methimazole (MTZ) and applied to determine Hg 2+ based on the fluorescence extinction. Starch obtained from rice was used as a natural source for the production of CDs by hydrothermal treatment. Also, it was proposed a factorial design to optimize the parameters for CD synthesis and the results showed that the luminescence intensity is a function of temperature and not of the heating time in the hydrothermal process. The synthesized CDs were characterized using fluorescence techniques, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS), it was found the formation of CDs on a nanometer scale with an average size of 11 nm. The functionalization with MTZ, eliminated all interferences from other metals, indicating a selective response to Hg 2+ ions. The method was applied to Hg 2+ determination in waters. Under optimal conditions, was obtained a limit of detection of 1.8 × 10 -7 mol L -1 with a linear range from 3.3 × 10 -7 to 50.0 × 10 -6 mol L -1 . Therefore, the proposed method can be considered a simple, selective, and precise alternative that minimizes the number of reagents used for Hg 2+ determination in natural waters, and can be applied on a large scale in environmental analyzes., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. The wastewater contamination of urban rivers is a concern for biodiversity and a consequence from poor urban conservation policies. In the current study, the impact of urban and industrial activities was investigated in Iguaçu river (Southern Brazil) using juvenile Oreochromis niloticus, after trophic and chronic exposure (25, 50 and 100 %), over 81 days. After exposure liver, gills, gonads, brain, muscle, and blood were sampled for chemical, biochemical, histopathological, genotoxic and molecular analyses. Water levels of persistent organic pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine pesticides, polycyclic aromatics hydrocarbon (PAHs) and metals were investigated. The redox unbalance, histopathological and increase in vitellogenin expression in fish revealed both the bioavailability of micropollutants and their harmful effects. Objective: To analyze the venous anatomy of the dural sinuses of patients with posterior encephaloceles, in order to formulate anatomical patterns which can ensure safer surgery., Methods: This is a retrospective study, analyzing eight patients diagnosed with posterior encephalocele throughout 1 year., Results: Eight patients with cephaloceles were evaluated in our study from January 2017 to January 2018. The most common alteration was dysgenesis of the straight sinus (n = 7), followed by venous anomalies in the encephalocele and alterations in the SSS (superior sagittal sinus) (n = 4), and the occurrence of a falcine sinus (FC) in 3 patients., Conclusion: Anatomical variations are frequent in patients with cephaloceles. Therefore, an understanding of them is necessary for safe and effective treatment.

A promising use of bismuth nanoparticles (BiNPs) for different biomedical applications leads to a search for the elucidation of their toxicity mechanisms, since toxicity studies are still at early stage. In the current study, cytotoxic effects of BiNPs produced by laser ablation in solution (LASiS) was investigated in the murine macrophage line RAW 264.7. The cells were exposed to 0.01-50 µg ml -1 of BiNPs for 24 and 48 h and then cytotoxicity assays were performed. Decrease of MTT conversion to formazan and of cell attachment were observed with no effects on cell proliferation. No loss of membrane integrity or significant changes of ROS and RNS levels were observed in exposed cells. Foremost, increased phagocytic activity and DNA repair foci occurred for cells exposed to BiNPs. These effects are important findings that must be considered in the case of biomedical application of BiNPs, since inappropriate macrophages activation and inactivation may lead to immunotoxicity. Bismuth nanoparticles (BiNPs) produced by laser ablation in solution and stabilized with BSA decrease enzyme-dependent MTT conversion to formazan and increase phagocytic activity and DNA repair foci in murine macrophage line RAW 264.7 when exposed to 50 µg ml -1 . These effects are findings that should be considered in the case of biomedical application of BiNPs, since inappropriate macrophages activation and inactivation may lead to immunotoxicity.

Manganese (Mn) is essential for animal development and homeostasis. However, anthropogenic activities increase the concentration of Mn in the environment and lead to increased risk of exposure to high doses of the metal. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of high doses of Mn on the male reproductive system of swiss mice. The 22-day old mice were randomly sorted into four groups and exposed to 0 (control), 15, 30 and 60 mg of MnCl 2 /kg/day, via daily gavages for 45 days. After the exposure, the mice were euthanized and sperm, hormonal and oxidative stress endpoints were evaluated in the testis, seminal vesicle and hypothalamus. Exposure to Mn promoted weight reduction of androgen-dependent organs, as well as alteration of the levels of fecal androgenic metabolites. Sperm parameters were drastically affected in all treated groups and the antioxidants tested (catalase and glutathione-disulfide reductase activities, and non-protein thiols content) decreased in the testis. However, only a few endpoints were altered in the seminal vesicle. For the hypothalamus, there was a reduction in acetylcholinesterase activity, suggesting a neurotoxic potential of Mn. Although multiple studies have reported the toxicological effects and underlying mechanisms of toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) in a variety of organisms, the interactions of AgNP with environmental contaminants such as cadmium are poorly understood. We used biochemical assays and mass spectrometry-based proteomics to assess the cellular and molecular effects induced by a co-exposure of HepG2 cells to AgNP and cadmium. Cell viability and energy homeostasis were slightly affected after a 4-h exposure to AgNP, cadmium, or a combination of the two; these endpoints were substantially altered after a 24-h co-exposure to AgNP and cadmium, while exposure to one of the two contaminants led only to minor changes. Proteomics analysis followed the same trend: while a 4-h exposure induced minor protein deregulation, a 24-h exposure to a combination of AgNP and cadmium deregulated 43% of the proteome. The toxicity induced by a combined exposure to AgNP and cadmium involved (1) inactivation of Nrf2, resulting in downregulation of antioxidant defense and proteasome-related proteins, (2) metabolic adaptation and ADP/ATP imbalance, and (3) increased protein synthesis possibly to reestablish homeostasis. The adaptation strategy was not sufficient to restore ADP/ATP homeostasis and to avoid cell death.

The association of oral lichen planus (OLP) lesions with malignant transformation risk has remained a controversial topic and is of clinical importance. Therefore, the present study evaluated the expression levels of p16, Ki-67, budding uninhibited by benzimidazoles 3 (Bub-3) and sex-determining region Y-related high mobility group box 4 (SOX4), and their roles as precancerous biomarkers in OLP. A retrospective study was performed, in which tissue blocks of OLP, oral dysplasia (OD), cutaneous lichen planus (CLP) and oral fibrous hyperplasia (OFH) were used (n=120). A positivity index (PI) for p16, BUB3, Ki-67 and SOX4 expression was calculated in each group. The PI for p16 was 20.65% for OLP, 7.85% for OD, 86.59% for CLP and 11.8% for OFH, and the difference between these groups was statistically significant (P<0.001). PIs of Ki-67 were indicated as 11.6% for OLP, 14.4% for OD, 8.24% for CLP and 5.5% for OFH, and a statistically significant difference was observed between the groups (P<0.001). Notably, the expression levels of BUB3 were not statistically different among groups. The highest expression levels of SOX4 were identified in CLP (P<0.001 vs. OLP/CLP; P=0,001 vs. CLP/OD). The determined expression levels of p16 and Ki-67 suggest that specific OLP lesions may have an intermediate malignant potential and should be carefully followed up. The intense SOX4 staining in CLP indicated a different proliferation pattern of epithelium compared with oral mucosa cells. These findings suggest that SOX4 expression may also be associated with the different clinical courses of OLP and CLP.

Background: The number of oropharyngeal lesions caused by HPV (Human papillomavirus) has been increasing worldwide in the past years. In spite of the clinical relevance of HPV infection in the anogenital tract of HIV-positive patients, the relevance of oropharynx HPV infection in these patients is not clear. The aim of the present study was to detect HPV infection, and clinical and cytological changes in the oropharynx of HIV-positive patients., Methods: Samples collected from the oropharynx of 100 HIV-positive patients were subjected to hybrid capture (HC), conventional and liquid-based cytology. Clinical data were also collected to investigate the relation with HPV status., Results: High and low-risk types of HPV were present in 8% and 16.7% of the total sample. The mean ± sd (maximum-minimum) of the relative ratio light unit (RLU)/cutoff (CO) was 2.94 ± 2.58 (1.09-7.87) and 1.61 ± 0.65 (1.07-2.8) for high- and low-risk-HPV, respectively. By cytology, dysplasia was not detected, but atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) were diagnosed in two samples. No clinical change, suggestive of dysplasia/cancer, was detected., Conclusion: Our study was able to detect and characterize HPV infection by hybrid capture, which may represent a good tool for screening and follow-up of HPV in the studied population. The frequency and viral load of HPV were low. The Iguaçu River, located at the Southern part of Brazil, has a great socioeconomic and environmental importance due to its high endemic fish fauna and its potential to generate hydroelectric power. However, Iguaçu River suffers intense discharge of pollutants in the origin of the river. In a previous report, the local environmental agency described water quality to improve along the river course. However, no study with integrated evaluation of chemical analysis and biological responses has been reported so far for the Iguaçu River. In the current study, three different Brazilian fish species (Astyanax bifasciatus, Chrenicicla iguassuensis, and Geophagus brasiliensis) were captured in the five cascading reservoirs of Iguaçu River for a multi-biomarker study. Chemical analysis in water, sediment, and muscle indicated high levels of bioavailable metals in all reservoirs. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were detected in the bile of the three fish species. Integration of the data through a FA/PCA analysis demonstrated the poorest environmental quality of the reservoir farthest from river's source, which is the opposite of what has been reported by the environmental agency. The presence of hazardous chemicals in the five reservoirs of Iguaçu River, their bioaccumulation in the muscle of fish, and the biological responses showed the impacts of human activities to this area and did not confirm a gradient of pollution between the five reservoirs, from the source toward Iguaçu River's mouth. Therefore, diffuse source of pollutants present along the river course are increasing the risk of exposure to biota and human populations.

Manganese (Mn) is a trace element essential for brain development and functioning of the central nervous system. However, there is a lack of information concerning the neurotoxicity of Mn under realistic doses in early stages of development, though excess of Mn results in a progressive disorder of the nervous system called manganism. In the current study, adult mice were exposed to three doses of Mn for 60 days through daily gavages, while mice pups were exposed to the same Mn doses during developmental period (gestational and breast-feeding). From the latter group of mice, a group was exposed for more 60 days to the same Mn doses. Chemical analysis revealed a dose-dependent bioaccumulation of Mn in mice's brain. Biochemical parameters revealed that (1) Mn affects non-protein thiol levels, glutathione S-tranferase and acetylcholinesterase activities, as well as the levels of oxidized lipids and proteins in mice brain, though lipids and proteins alterations were found only after exposure to high and unrealistic doses; (2) Realistic doses of Mn affects the activity of brain AChE and finally; (3) Pups' brain were affected by Mn even whether only the parental females had been previously exposed. The current study shows evidences of chemical stress in mice exposed to Mn during the early period of development and an efficient mechanism of Mn elimination under higher doses. These findings open new lines of investigation regarding manganese toxicity in vertebrates mainly in the early stages of development., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

X-linked acro-gigantism (X-LAG) syndrome is a newly described disease caused by microduplications on chromosome Xq26.3 leading to copy number gain of GPR101. We describe the clinical progress of a sporadic male X-LAG syndrome patient with an Xq26.3 microduplication, highlighting the aggressive natural history of pituitary tumor growth in the absence of treatment. The patient first presented elsewhere aged 5 years 8 months with a history of excessive growth for >2 years. His height was 163 cm, his weight was 36 kg, and he had markedly elevated GH and IGF-1. MRI showed a non-invasive sellar mass measuring 32.5 × 23.9 × 29.1 mm. Treatment was declined and the family was lost to follow-up. At the age of 10 years and 7 months, he presented again with headaches, seizures, and visual disturbance. His height had increased to 197 cm. MRI showed an invasive mass measuring 56.2 × 58.1 × 45.0 mm, with compression of optic chiasma, bilateral cavernous sinus invasion, and hydrocephalus. His thyrotrope, corticotrope, and gonadotrope axes were deficient. Surgery, somatostatin analogs, and cabergoline did not control vertical growth and pegvisomant was added, although vertical growth continues (currently 207 cm at 11 years 7 months of age). X-LAG syndrome is a new genomic disorder in which early-onset pituitary tumorigenesis can lead to marked overgrowth and gigantism. This case illustrates the aggressive nature of tumor evolution and the challenging clinical management in X-LAG syndrome.

The effects of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and tributyltin (TBT) association were investigated through a multi-biomarker approach. Ten Rhamdia quelen fish per group were exposed through intraperitoneal injections either to BaP (0.3; 3 or 30 mg kg(-1)), DDT or TBT (0.03; 0.3 or 3 mg kg(-1)) or BaP/DDT, BaP/TBT, DDT/TBT or BaP/DDT/TBT on their lowest doses. The experiments were divided in acute (one dose, 5-day) and sub-chronic (3 doses, 15-day). Control groups received an equal volume of PBS or canola oil (1 ml kg(-1)). The three tested contaminants altered AChE activity in brain and muscle in similar ways; the mixtures antagonized the increase evoked by the contaminants alone. BaP and TBT increased GSH content and mixtures reduced it. GPx activity was increased by DDT and TBT in the 15-day experiment and reduced by the mixtures. BaP increased GST activity in sub-chronic experiment while TBT reduced it in the acute experiment. BaP/TBT increased GST activity compared to all groups; the other mixtures reduced it compared to BaP or DDT in the 5-day experiment. BaP, DDT and TBT increased δ-ALAd activity mainly in acute exposure; the mixtures also increased δ-ALAd compared to DDT or TBT in 5 and 15-day. BaP, TBT and BaP/DDT decreased LPO in the acute experiment. In the sub-chronic experiment DDT/TBT increased LPO when compared to TBT. None of the contaminants alone altered PCO, but all mixtures increased it compared to one or another contaminant. Contaminants isolated had a more acute effect in ALT plasma level; their lowest dose, which had no effect alone, in combination has led to an increase of this enzyme, especially after 15 days. DDT increased AST in the acute and sub-chronic experiments, while TBT did the same in the latter. DDT/TBT decreased AST opposing the effect of the contaminants alone in the 5-day experiment. Hepatic lesions index could be explained by a more acute effect of the contaminants alone or combined and by activation of cell defenses after the sub-chronic exposure. TBT increased melanomacrophages counting in the 5-day experiment and the mixtures increased it in the 5 and 15-day experiments. Overall, the majority of the biomarkers pointed to a more toxic effect when these contaminants were combined, leading to unexpected toxicities compared to individual exposure scenarios. Introduction: Several theories have been proposed to explain the cause of 'aging'; however, the factors that affect this complex process are still poorly understood. Of these theories, the accumulation of oxidative damage over time is among the most accepted. Particularly, the heart is one of the most affected organs by oxidative stress. The current study, therefore, aimed to investigate oxidative stress markers in myocardial tissue of rats at different ages., Methods: Seventy-two rats were distributed into 6 groups of 12 animals each and maintained for 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months. After euthanasia, the heart was removed and the levels of non-protein thiols, lipid peroxidation, and protein carbonylation, as well as superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were determined., Results: Superoxide dismutase, catalase activity and lipid peroxidation were reduced in the older groups of animals, when compared with the younger group. However, protein carbonylation showed an increase in the 12-month group followed by a decrease in the older groups. In addition, the levels of non-protein thiols were increased in the 12-month group and not detected in the older groups., Conclusion: Our data showed that oxidative stress is not associated with aging in the heart. However, an increase in non-protein thiols may be an important factor that compensates for the decrease of superoxide dismutase and catalase activity in the oldest rats, to maintain appropriate antioxidant defenses against oxidative insults.

Pathogens are sensed by innate immune receptors that initiate an efficient adaptive immune response upon activation. The elements of the innate immune recognition process for Paracoccidioides brasiliensis include TLR-2, TLR-4, and dectin-1. However, there are additional receptors necessary for the host immune responses to P. brasiliensis. The nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor (NLRs), which activate inflammasomes, are candidate receptors that deserve renewed investigation. After pathogen infection, the NLRs form large signaling platforms called inflammasomes, which lead to caspase-1 activation and maturation of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-18 and IL-1β). In this study, we showed that NLR family pyrin domain-containing 3 (Nlrp3) is required to induce caspase-1 activation and further secretion of IL-1β and IL-18 by P. brasiliensis-infected macrophages. Additionally, potassium efflux and lysosomal acidification induced by the fungus were important steps in the caspase-1 activation mechanism. Notably, Nlrp3 and caspase-1 knockout mice were more susceptible to infection than were the wild-type animals, suggesting that the Nlrp3-dependent inflammasomes contribute to host protection against P. brasiliensis. This protective effect occurred owing to the inflammatory response mediated by IL-18, as shown by an augmented fungus burden in IL-18 knockout mice. Taken together, our results show that the Nlrp3 inflammasome is essential for resistance against P. brasiliensis because it orchestrates robust caspase-1 activation and triggers an IL-18-dependent proinflammatory response., (Copyright © 2015 by The American Association of Immunologists, Inc.)

Power transformers are essential components in electrical energy distribution. One of their most important parts is the insulation system, consisting of Kraft paper immersed in insulating oil. Interfacial tension and color are major parameters used for assessing oil quality and the system׳s degradation. This work proposes the use of near infrared (NIR), molecular fluorescence, and (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy methods combined with chemometric multivariate calibration methods (Partial Least Squares - PLS) to predict interfacial tension and color in insulating mineral oil samples. Interfacial tension and color were also determined using tensiometry and colorimetry as standard reference methods, respectively. The best PLS model was obtained when NIR, fluorescence, and NMR data were combined (data fusion), demonstrating synergy among them. An optimal PLS model was calculated using the selected group of variables according to their importance on PLS projections (VIP). The root mean square errors of prediction (RMSEP) values of 2.9 mN m(-1) and 0.3 were estimated for interfacial tension and color, respectively. Mean relative standard deviations of 1.5% for interfacial tension and 6% for color were registered, meeting quality control requirements set by electrical energy companies. The methods proposed in this work are rapid and simple, showing great advantages over traditional approaches, which are slow and environmentally unfriendly due to chemical waste generation., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Introduction: This study evaluated the level of concordance between hybrid capture II (HCII) and PapilloCheck® for the detection of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) in anal samples., Methods: Anal cell samples collected from 42 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)+ patients were analyzed., Results: Considering only the 13 high-risk HPV types that are detectable by both tests, HCII was positive for 52.3% of the samples, and PapilloCheck® was positive for 52.3%. The level of concordance was 80.9% (Kappa = 0.61)., Conclusions: Good concordance was observed between the tests for the detection of high-risk HPV.

In the present study, we investigated the mercury distribution, mercury bioaccumulation, and oxidative parameters in the Neotropical fish Hoplias malabaricus after trophic exposure. Forty-three individuals were distributed into three groups (two exposed and one control) and trophically exposed to fourteen doses of methylmercury each 5 days, totalizing the doses of 1.05 μg g⁻¹ (M1.05) and 10.5 μg g⁻¹ (M10.5 group). Autometallography technique revealed the presence of mercury in the intestinal epithelia, hepatocytes, and renal tubule cells. Mercury distribution was dose-dependent in the three organs: intestine, liver, and kidney. Reduced glutathione concentration, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and glutathione S-transferase significantly decreased in the liver of M1.05, but glutathione reductase increased and lipid peroxidation levels were not altered. In the M10.5, most biomarkers were not altered; only catalase activity decreased. Hepatic and muscle mercury bioaccumulation was dose-dependent, but was not influenced by fish sex. The mercury localization and bioaccumulation corroborates some histopathological findings in this fish species (previously verified by Mela et al. in Ecotoxicol Environ Saf 68:426-435, 2007). However, the results of redox biomarkers did not explain histopathological findings previously reported in M10.5. Thus, fish accommodation to the stressor may reestablish antioxidant status at the highest dose, but not avoid cell injury.

Purpose: To investigate the effects of pneumoperitoneum on colonic anastomosis healing., Methods: Colonic anastomosis was performed in 120 rats divided into four groups: Group I - pneumoperitoneum before laparotomy, Group II - pneumoperitoneum after laparorrhaphy, Group III - pneumoperitoneum before laparotomy and after laparorrhaphy, Group IV - no pneumoperitoneum (control group). Pneumoperitoneum pressure was 5 mmHg. Animals were killed on the 3rd, 7th and 14th postoperative day. Histopathological features, anastomosis breaking strength, collagen histomorphometry and hydroxyproline concentration were assessed., Results: Breaking strength between groups: (day 3, p=0.165; day 7, p=0.219; day 14, p=0.539). Histopathology revealed that group II had, on day 7, less infiltration of mononuclear cells (p=0.006), greater infiltration of polymorphonuclear cells (p=0.001) and greater necrosis (p=0.001); and on day 14, less fibrosis. Histomorphometry revealed a decrease in collagen in groups I and III (p<0.001) on day 7 and an increase in groups I and II on day 14 (p<0.001). Hydroxyproline concentration was similar for groups on days 3 (p=0.152), 7 (p=0.913) or 14 (p=0.981)., Conclusion: Carbon dioxide does not impair the healing of colonic anastomosis in rats.

Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a chronic subcutaneous mycosis, caused by several dimorphic, pigmented dematiaceous fungi. Patients with the disease are still considered a therapeutic challenge, mainly due to its recalcitrant nature. There is no "gold standard" treatment for this neglected mycosis, but rather there are several treatment options. Chemotherapy alternatives include 5-flucytosine, itraconazole, terbinafine, fluconazole, thiabendazole, ketoconazole and amphotericin B, although the healing of severe cases is still uncommon. However, several studies have reported the DNA vaccine to be promising in the treatment for fungal infections; this vaccine allows the host to restore depressed cellular immunity, minimizing the toxic effects from conventional antifungal therapies. This work was therefore carried out aiming to establish a suitable model for experimental CBM, suggesting also new therapies, including DNA-hsp65 vaccine. By analyzing the morphometrical and histopathological aspects and by quantifying the fungal burden, the results showed the establishment of a chronic, although transitory, experimental CBM model with lesions similar to those presented in humans. A treatment regimen using intralesional itraconazole or amphotericin B was effective in treating experimental CBM, as was a therapy using naked DNA-hsp65 vaccine. It has also been shown that chemotherapy associated with DNA-hsp65 vaccine is promising in the treatment for CBM.

Background: Annona dioica St. Hill (Annonacaeae) is a Brazilian plant used in folk medicine for the treatment of several types of rheumatisms and diarrhoea. The focus of this work was to evaluate the in vitro antiproliferative and antioxidant activity and the in vivo hypoglycaemic and anti-inflammatory activity of A. dioica and identify the principal constituents of this plant., Methods: The crude methanol extract (EAD) and hexane (HF), chloroform (CF), ethyl acetate (EAF) and hydromethanol fractions (HMF) were evaluated for free radical scavenging activity using the DPPH assay. The EAD and EAF were assayed for hypoglycaemic activity in rats. The EAD was tested in an antiproliferation assay and for anti-inflammatory effects in paw oedema, in addition to myeloperoxidase activity induced by carrageenan (Cg) in mice. The EAF was assayed using chromatographic methods., Results: The fractionation of the EAF through chromatographic methods identified derivatives of the flavonoids quercetin and kaempferol. Among all the tested fractions, the ethyl acetate and hydromethanol fractions were the most potent, exhibiting an IC50 of 8.53 and 10.57 μg/mL, respectively, which is comparable to that of the commercial antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). The oral administration of the EAD (100 mg/kg) and EAF (15 mg/kg) inhibited the increase of glucose levels, resulting in a hypoglycaemic effect. The EAD (30 to 300 mg/kg) exhibited an anti-oedematogenic effect in Cg-induced paw oedema in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The results showed a reduction of MPO activity by A. dioica 6 h after the induction of paw oedema at all doses tested with maximal inhibition at 300 mg/kg., Conclusions: Our results reveal for the first time that compounds contained in the A. dioica leaves exert anti-inflammatory, hypoglycaemic, antiproliferative, and antioxidant effects. The antioxidant activity may be associated with the presence of flavonoids.

Considering the limitations of cytology for detection of residual cervical cancer after radiotherapy, the aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency and viral load of high-risk HPV in cervical and vaginal samples during the early follow-up of patients treated for invasive cervical cancer and correlate the results with cytological examination. Conventional cytology and hybrid capture test were performed on cervical and vaginal samples of 52 women with invasive cervical carcinoma 3 months after therapy. High-risk HPV was detected in 46.1% of the samples and the median and the range of the ratio relative light unit (RLU)/cutoff (CO) (estimated viral load) in positive samples was 1.71 (1-2120.03). No significant difference was observed in viral frequency and in median of the ratio RLU/CO between samples of patients at different stages (I-III) and between cervical samples, from patients treated by exclusive radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy, and vaginal samples, from patients who underwent to hysterectomy and radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy. Cytological abnormalities were more frequent significantly in samples with HPV than in samples without HPV. The viral load was also higher significantly in samples with cytological abnormalities when compared with the samples without cytological abnormalities. In conclusion, HPV detection methods may be useful during the early follow-up as a complement to conventional cytology for the diagnosis of residual cervical cancer after radiotherapy., (Copyright © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Objective: To assess the distance covered by both eutrophic individuals and individuals with different grades of obesity and correlate the data obtained with spirometric values. This study is justified by the existing difficulty in assessing the functional capacity in obese individuals, and by the low cost and good specificity of six-minute walk test (6MWT) in predicting reduced capacity for activities of daily living for any individual., Methods: One hundred fifty-four individuals of both genders were assessed after being divided into two groups: G1, obese individuals (n = 93, BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²) and G2, eutrophic individuals (n = 61, BMI 18.5 to 24.99 kg/m²). The 6MWT was performed using the methodology described by the American Thoracic Society (ATS-2002). Spirometry was performed both before and after the application of a bronchodilator agent (BDA) in accordance with the Guidelines for Pulmonary Function Tests by the Brazilian Society of Pneumology and Phthisiology (SBPT-2002). The statistical analysis, consisting of mean, standard deviation, Pearson's correlation, Student's t test and Spearman's correlation, considered p < 0.05., Results: The 6MWT analysis with spirometry for G1 was positively correlated only with pre- and post-BDA peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR)., Conclusion: The present study showed a positive correlation between pre- and post-BDA PEFR and the distance covered in the 6MWT in obese subjects, that is, the higher the PEFR, the higher the physico-functional capacity of the individual, and consequently, the greater the distance covered.

In order to investigate the potential risk of mercury and DDTs exposure to fish-eating human populations in Samuel Reservoir, not affected directly by gold-mining activities, the axial muscle of Cichla monoculus was analyzed. Twenty-nine and thirty adults individuals were collected respectively on February (rainy season) and August (dry season) 2007. The specimens were sacrificed by spinal section before sex identification, body weight and total length determination. For total mercury, DDT and DDE quantifications and cholinesterase activity samples of the axial muscle were frozen at -20°C, and for histopathological studies gill and liver were fixed in ALFAC solution for 16 h. A value of 48.2% and 33% of the individuals, respectively from rainy and dry seasons, presented mercury concentrations higher than the maximum established for safe human consumption (0.5 μg g⁻¹) by World Health Organization. A positive correlation between body weight and Hg concentration was observed only in individuals from the rainy season, but no correlation was observed to DDT and DDE from both seasons. Differently from that observed to mercury, DDT levels presented a significant difference between both studied seasons, but no correlation was observed for both mercury and DDTs and sex. The levels of DDTs in muscle of C. monoculus are under the maximum established by FAO-Alimentarius CODEX and Swedish Food Regulation for human consumption. The histopathological and neurotoxic findings showed that the wild population of fish is affected by chronic exposure to mercury, meaning risk also to fish-eating populations. Finally, the results showed that C. monoculus is an important vehicle for human exposure to mercury and DDTs in Samuel Reservoir and that it is necessary a continuous biomonitoring of the levels of both pollutants in order to manage the risk of exposure to human populations., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: To correlate anthropometric data and respiratory muscle strength (RMS) of normal-weight and obese women., Methods: The sample consisted of 103 sedentary women, divided into two groups: 57 obese and 46 normal-weight women. Waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC) were measured to calculate the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and maximal respiratory pressures (Pmax) were determined using an analog vacuum manometer to ± 300 cm H2O. Body composition was measured using tetrapolar bioelectrical impedance analysis. Descriptive statistics was used for data analysis, in addition to the Student t test for independent samples, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. Significance level was set at p ≤ 0.05., Results: The analysis showed significant differences in Pmax of normal-weight women (PImax = -73.04±16.55 cm H2O and PEmax = 79.67±18.89 cm H2O) and obese women (PImax = -85.00±21.69 cm H2O and PEmax = 103.86±20.35 cm H2O). Anthropometric and manometric variables showed no significant correlation in both groups. When analyzing the influence of bioelectrical impedance on RMS, a positive correlation was observed between lean body mass and PImax., Conclusion: Bioelectrical impedance and obesity showed a direct correlation with RMS. WC and WHR had no influence on RMS of obese women; however, a relevance to risk factors for associated diseases was observed. We believe that these results are due to an adjustment to excess body weight over the years.

This study investigated the effects of different doses of 17-beta-estradiol (E(2)) in Rhamdia quelen. Groups of males exposed to different doses of E(2) (0.1 mg kg(-)(1), 1 mg kg(-)(1) and 10 mg kg(-)(1)) were compared with non-exposed male and female fish groups. Among the considered biomarkers, no significant differences were observed for micronuclei test, reduced glutathione concentration and lipid peroxidation. All E(2)-treated individuals had decreased glutathione S-transferase activity. Increased catalase and superoxide dismutase activities, increased vitellogenin expression and decreased metallothionein concentration were observed in males treated with the highest dose. Liver of all test groups showed necrotic areas, but cytoplasm vacuolization was again found only in the individuals exposed to highest dose. E(2) causes deleterious hepatic effects to R. quelen, and vitellogenin expression, catalase and superoxide dismutase activity and metallothionein concentration represent appropriate biomarkers for studying E(2) effects. Additionally, the response of some biomarkers was similar in males exposed to E(2) and unexposed females, and therefore exposure to endocrine disruptors may cause consequences for fish populations.

This paper proposes a simple and non-expensive electroanalytical methodology for classification of edible vegetable oils with respect to type (canola, sunflower, corn and soybean) and conservation state (expired and non-expired shelf life). The proposed methodology employs an alcoholic extraction procedure followed by square wave voltammetry (SWV). Two chemometric methods were compared for classification of the resulting voltammograms, namely Soft Independent Modelling of Class Analogy (SIMCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) with variable selection by the Successive Projections Algorithm (SPA). The results were evaluated in terms of errors in a set of samples not included in the modelling process. The best results were obtained with the SPA-LDA method, which correctly classified all samples in terms of type and conservation state.

A closed fracture was performed on the left tibia of 3-month-old Wistar rats weighing 250 to 350 g that were either healthy (N = 24) or made diabetic with alloxan (N = 24) to investigate the effect of alloxan-induced diabetes on the course of bone fracture healing. Histomorphometric analysis of the fracture site was performed at 7, 14, 25, and 35 days. After 7 days, diabetic rats had significantly less cartilage (P = 0.045) and greater fibrous connective (P = 0.006) tissue formation at the fracture site compared to controls. In contrast, marked callus formation was seen in diabetic rats with significant osteogenesis (P = 0.011, P = 0.010, P = 0.010, respectively, for 14, 25, and 35 days) and chondrogenesis (P = 0.028, P = 0.033, P = 0.019) compared to controls. Radiographic analysis revealed a displaced fracture with poor bone fragment alignment and delayed consolidation at these times in the diabetic group. The levels of alkaline phosphatase were significantly higher in diabetic rats at 25 days (P = 0.009). These results suggest that the initial excessive formation of fibrous connective tissue associated with delay in chondrogenesis and osteogenesis may not provide suitable stability of the fractured site, contributing to the inappropriate alignment of fragments and an increase in the volume of callus in later stages of repair. The resulting displaced fracture in diabetic rats requires long periods for remodeling and complete bone consolidation.

Objective: To analyze cytomorphologically the buccal mucosa of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD)., Study Design: Brush biopsies were obtained from 10 patients with AD and 9 age-matched controls without neurologic symptoms from 3 distinct oral sites., Results: A significant reduction in partially keratinized intermediate (red) cells was observed in the buccal mucosa of the AD group. In the AD group, parabasal cells from the floor of the mouth (p = 0.017) and buccal mucosa (p = 0.058) and red cells,from the tongue dorsum (p = 0.013) and buccal mucosa (p = 0.002), exhibited significantly greater nuclear areas. With regard to the nuclear to cytoplasmic (N:C) ratio, intermediate (red) cells from the buccal mucosa and tongue dorsum of AD individuals showed a decrease in this parameter (p <0.0001), while superficial (yellow) cells (from buccal mucosa) (p= 0.042) and parabasal (blue) cells (from the tongue dorsum) (p = 0.003) exhibited an increased N:C ratio. No significant differences were detected in the cells from the floor of the mouth., Conclusions: Our findings indicate that cytologic and cytometric changes were detectable in the exfoliative cytology of the buccal mucosa and tongue in the AD group.

Objective: To compare the observed incidence of mediastinitis and strokes versus the expected incidence according to the NNECDSG score (Northern New England Cardiovascular Disease Study Group) in a population submitted to coronary artery bypass graft surgery., Methods: A retrospective consultation was made of medical records of all patients submitted to isolated CABG from January 1st, 2000 to December 31st, 2004, at the Cardiac Surgery Service of the Triângulo Mineiro Federal University (UFTM). Data regarding the incidences of observed mediastinitis and strokes and those estimated by the NNECDSG score were submitted to the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test. A comparison was achieved using the paired Student t test, with the level of significance determined as p=0.05., Results: A group of 230 patients were analyzed, including 144 (62.60%) men and 86 (37.39%) women. Sixty-one (26.52%) presented with diabetes, 30 (13.04%) with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 23 (10%) had peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Emergency surgery occurred in 34 (14.78 %) cases. In 37 (16.08%) patients an ejection fraction (EF) of less than 40% was identified. Mediastinitis occurred in 12 (5.21%) patients and despite the greater general incidence in the sample studied, no statistical significance was found. Strokes occurred in 12 patients (5.21%) and in spite of the higher mean percentage incidence of observed strokes for all scores, a level of statistical significance was not found., Conclusions: Although the incidences of mediastinitis and strokes were greater in the population studied, these values showed no statistical significance, confirming the score recommended by the NNECDSG as a safe and efficient method for predicting postoperative mediastinitis and strokes in patients submitted to myocardial revascularization surgery in the UFTM.

The present study describes the temporal expression of complement regulatory molecules membrane cofactor protein (MCP), decay accelerating factor (DAF), CR1, and CD59 in the human endometrium throughout the normal menstrual cycle and in patients submitted to ovarian hyperstimulation. During its proliferative phase, the endometrium expresses MCP, with increased expression during the secretory phase. Phase-dependent expression also was observed for DAF and CD59, mainly in the secretory phase. Expression of CR1 was not detected. These results suggest the presence of complement system activity during the menstrual cycle, with greater expression of regulatory molecules during the secretory phase to protect the epithelial integrity of human endometrium.

Unlabelled: The segmental gastrectomy of the body of the stomach, combined with proximal gastric vagotomy, has been indicated in the treatment of duodenal ulcer, especially in patients with major risk of the recurrent ulceration., Purpose: To evaluate the histopathologic changes, secondaries to combined corporeal segmental gastrectomy and proximal gastric vagotomy, in the lesser curvature of the stomach., Methods: Thirty-six adult mongrel dogs weighing between 10 to 20 kg were divided into three groups of twelve animals each: Group I animals (control) were submitted to laparotomy and gastric manipulation; Group II, animals underwent proximal gastric vagotomy; and Group III, animals underwent corporeal segmental gastrectomy combined with proximal gastric vagotomy. Each group was subdivided into two subgroups of six animals each, and according to the subgroup, the animals were then sacrificed on the third or in the eighth postoperative day. A fragment of the lesser curvature was removed from each stomach for microscopic study., Results: Regarding edema, vascular congestion, inflammatory exudate, fibrosis and cell damage; histopathologic changes found in animals sacrificed in the same postoperative day were slight in Group I, moderate in Group II and intense in the group III. Although nonspecific, the character and site of the lesions were similar to the ones occurring in ischemic process. It was also observed a directly proportional relation between severity of morphologic changes and ischemic potentiality of surgical procedure., Conclusion: The segmental gastrectomy probably aggravated the arterial blood supply of the remnant of lesser curvature of the stomach, which was already compromised by devascularization consequent to proximal gastric vagotomy.

Two cases of congenital trabecular hypoplasia of the right ventricle are reported. In the first, the neonatal diagnosis was missed and the child did well until the 13th month of life when a modified Blalock-Taussig shunt was done because of increasing cyanosis. Outcome was good until the 4th year of life when symptomatic atrioventricular block was detected in an emergency situation. A bidirectional Glenn anastomosis and pacemaker implantation were successfully carried out after clinical establization and the child is doing well up to now. The second case presents the disease with its worst features: severe cyanosis and acidosis in the first day of life. A modified Blalock-Taussig shunt was performed and death occurred soon after the operation.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of left ventriculectomy, on a short term basis, as a treatment for patients with end-stage heart failure., Methods: From February to June 1995, 7 patients with end-stage heart failure underwent partial left ventriculectomy. Before the surgical procedure, 7 (100%) patients were in functional class IV. Three (42%) patients needed inotropic support for hemodynamic stability. The mean daily dose of furosemide was l48.67 +/- 128.27 mg, of captopril 87.50 +/- 95.20 mg and of digoxin 0.23 +/- 0.04. Mean left ventricular diastolic dimension determined by 2-D echocardiography was 78.29 +/- 12.63 mm, mean left ventricular ejection fraction, determined by radionuclide ventriculography, was 0.15 +/- 0.05 whereas mean transpulmonary gradient and pulmonary vascular resistance in Wood units, determined by right heart catheterization, were 16.80 +/- 8.80 and 6.57 +/- 3.22, respectively., Results: Sixty days after the surgery, the mean functional class was 1.71 +/- 0.48 (p = 0.009), the mean left ventricular diastolic dimension 64.67 +/- 11.41 mm (p = 0.02) and the mean left ventricular ejection fraction 0.22 +/- 0.04 (p = 0.02)., Conclusion: The left ventriculectomy is a promising treatment for patients with end-stage heart failure.

The description of hemolytic anemia after mitral valve repair has been infrequent. The present paper presents this complication, discussing its diagnosis and surgical aspects, such as the association with the use of teflon felt for posterior annuloplasty. This complication happened in two children at our institution, one treated medically with supplementation of folic acid and ferrous sulfate and another requiring surgery for replacement of the teflon felt using a piece of heterologous pericardium for a new annuloplasty and leaflet advancement.

The case of a 74 year old woman with pseudo-false aneurysm of the left ventricle after a silent myocardial infarction stimulating left pulmonary neoplasm is presented. Special emphasis in given to the uncommon aspects of the case, its rarity and the association of the pseudo-false aneurysm with a true aneurysm of left ventricle.
