Abstract

BACKGROUND: A low prevalence of HIV in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients has been reported in the literature though mechanisms for this are not understood. METHODS: HIV risk behaviors were compared between SCD cases and non-SCD controls using a self-administered audio computer-assisted self-interview. SCD cases were recruited from a multi-center SCD cohort established in Brazil; controls were recruited from SCD social contacts. Categorical variables were analyzed using Chi-Square or Fisher exact test. Continuous variables were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: There were 152 SCD cases and 154 age/location matched controls enrolled at three participating Brazilian centers during 2016-17. No significant differences in number of sexual partners (lifetime or previous 12 months), male-to-male sex partners or intravenous drug use were observed. Cases received more transfusions, surgeries, and acupuncture treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Besides the risk of transfusion-transmitted HIV, which is now exceedingly rare, SCD and non-SCD participants demonstrated similar HIV risk behaviors. Causes other than risk behaviors such as factors inherent to SCD pathophysiology may explain the reported low prevalence of HIV in SCD.

Abstract

We describe a simple and accurate framework for modeling the statistical behavior of both fully developed turbulence and short-term dynamics of financial markets based on the formalism of Tsallis' generalized non-extensive thermostatistics. Within this framework, we show that intermittency and non-extensivity are naturally linked by the entropic parameter q. Abstract

Some cosmological consequences of first order quantum corrections to Maxwell electrodynamics are investigated in the context of a spatially flat homogeneous and isotropic universe driven by a magnetic field plus a cosmological term $\Lambda$. For a vanishing $\Lambda$, we derive the general solution corresponding to the particular one recently found by Novello et al. [gr-qc/9806076]. We also find a general solution for the case when $\Lambda$ is a non-vanishing constant. Both solutions describe a non-singular, bouncing universe. However, we show that the first order correction to the electromagnetic Lagrangean density, in which the analysis is based, fails to describe the dynamics near $a_{min}$. The time range where the first order approximation can be used is explicitly evaluated. These problems my be circumvented through the use of higher order terms in the effective Lagrangean, as numerical calculations performed by Novello et al. [gr-qc/9809080], for the vanishing $\Lambda$ case, have indicated. A third general solution corresponding to a constant magnetic field sustained by a time dependent $\Lambda$ is derived. This latter solution is capable of describing the whole cosmic history and describes a universe that, although with vanishing curvature (K=0), has a scale factor that reaches a maximum and then contracts back to an arbitrarilly small size. Abstract

Nature provides a rich source of information for the design of novel materials; yet there remain significant challenges in the design and manufacture of materials that replicate the form, function, and sustainability of biological solutions. Here, we identify key challenges and promising approaches to the development of materials informed by biology. These challenges fall into two main areas; the first relates to harnessing biological information for materials innovation, including key differences between biological and synthetic materials, and the relationship between structure and function. We propose an approach to materials innovation that capitalizes on biodiversity, together with high-throughput characterization of biological material architectures and properties, linked to environmental and ecological context. The second area relates to the design and manufacture of bioinformed materials, including the physical scale of material architectures and manufacturing scale up. We suggest ways to address these challenges and promising prospects for a bioinformed approach to materials innovation.

Abstract

This book resulted from the Work Package 1 (WP1) of the Inclusive Assessment Map project – so-called I AM project. I AM is an Erasmus+ funded project (Agreement No. 621435-EPP-1-2020-1-AT- EPPKA3-IPI-SOC-IN) that aims to develop – based on the Internacional Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for Children and Youth (ICF-CY) – an innovative assessment tool that provides teachers with guidance on how to create school environments in order to be inclusive places. The partner countries are: Austria, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Belgium and Portugal. Abstract

Purpose: The anatomy of the medial wall of the cavernous sinus (MWCS) and parasellar ligaments (PLs) has acquired increasing importance in endoscopic endonasal (EE) surgery of the cavernous sinus (CS), including resection of the MWCS in functioning pituitary adenomas (FPAs). Although anatomical studies have been published, it represents a debated topic due to their complex morphology. The aim is to offer a description of the PLs that originate from the MWCS and reach the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus (LWCS), proposing the “candy wrapper” model. The relationships between the neurovascular structures and histomorphological aspects were investigated. Methods: Forty-two CSs from twenty-one human heads were studied. Eleven specimens were used for EE dissection; five underwent a microscopic dissection. Five specimens were used for histomorphological analysis. Results: Two groups of PLs with a fan-shaped appearance were encountered. The anterior group included the periosteal ligament (55% sides) and the carotico-clinoid complex (100% sides), formed by the anterior horizontal and the carotico-clinoid ligaments. The posterior group was formed by the posterior horizontal (78% sides), and the inferior hypophyseal ligament (34% sides). The periosteal ligament originated inferiorly from the MWCS, reaching the periosteal dura. The anterior horizontal ligament was divided in a superior and inferior branch. The superior one continued as the carotid-oculomotor membrane, and the inferior branch reached the CN VI. The carotico-clinoid ligament between the middle and anterior clinoid was ossified in 3 sides. The posterior horizontal ligament was related to the posterior genu and ended at the LWCS. The inferior hypophyseal ligament followed the homonym artery. The ligaments related to the ICA form part of the adventitia. Abstract

Over the lifetime of an animal, metabolic processes in the body maintain bone tissues in a dynamic state of equilibrium. After the death of the organism, bone tissues undergo diagenesis, an intense transformation that affects its physicochemical constitution. Although many recent works have greatly contributed to the understanding of the processes surrounding diagenesis, there is still much yet to be understood about this multifaceted phenomena. In this work, XRF and microCT were used to characterize the specimen elemental configuration and investigate the fossilization process of a recovered Puma concolor (cranium, mandible and teeth elements), found submerged in a lake in the Impossível‐Ioiô Cave System (Bahia, Brazil). MicroCT enabled the identification of the density distribution throughout the specimens, which were used as reference to XRF analyses. The XRF spectra of the analyzed specimen showed the presence of 11 elements: P, Cl, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Br, Sr, Y and Hg. Yttrium counts proved to be regular throughout the specimen surface and decreased in the interface between bone surface and interior, evidencing their correspondence to sample environmental exposure. Furthermore, a correlation between fossil surface coloration, element configuration and density is presented. The relatively low presence of Fe and Y in the enamel elicits its elementary and structural preservation. The combined results contribute to the understanding of the physicochemical process of paleomastozoological fossilization, further enriching the comprehension of the process of fossilization in a submerged environment.
