Abstract

To unlock the full potential of lithium metal batteries, a deep understanding of lithium metal reactivity and its solid electrolyte interphase is essential. Correlative imaging, combining focused ion beam and electron microscopy offers a powerful approach for multi-scale characterization. However, the extreme reactivity of lithium metal and its SEI presents challenges in investigating deposition and stripping mechanisms. In this work, we systematically evaluated the storage stability of lithium metal in glovebox before and after electrochemical deposition. We then assessed different FIB ion sources for their impact on lithium metal lamella preparation for transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, we examined cryogenic-TEM transfer methods, optimizing for minimal contamination during sample handling. Contrary to prior assumptions, we demonstrate that high resolution imaging of pure lithium metal at room temperature is achievable using inert gas transfer with an electron dose rate exceeding 1000 e/A2/s, without significant detectable damage. In contrast, SEI components, such as Li2CO3 and LiF display much greater sensitivity to electron beams, requiring cryogenic conditions and precise dose control for nano/atomic scale imaging. We quantified electron dose limits for these SEI components to track their structural evolution under irradiation. Based on these findings, we propose a robust protocol for lithium metal sample handling - from storage to atomic-level characterization - minimizing damage and contamination. Abstract

The Dynamic PicoProbe at Argonne National Laboratory is undergoing upgrades that will enable it to produce up to 100s of GB of data per day. While this data is highly important for both fundamental science and industrial applications, there is currently limited on-site infrastructure to handle these high-volume data streams. We address this problem by providing a software architecture capable of supporting large-scale data transfers to the neighboring supercomputers at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility. To prepare for future scientific workflows, we implement two instructive use cases for hyperspectral and spatiotemporal datasets, which include: (i) off-site data transfer, (ii) machine learning/artificial intelligence and traditional data analysis approaches, and (iii) automatic metadata extraction and cataloging of experimental results. This infrastructure supports expected workloads and also provides domain scientists the ability to reinterrogate data from past experiments to yield additional scientific value and derive new insights.

Abstract

The communication system is a critical part of the system design for the autonomous UAV. It has to address different considerations, including efficiency, reliability and mobility of the UAV. In addition, a multi-UAV system requires a communication system to assist information sharing, task allocation and collaboration in a team of UAVs. In this paper, we review communication solutions for supporting a team of UAVs while considering an application in the power line inspection industry. We provide a review of candidate wireless communication technologies {for supporting communication in UAV applications. Performance measurements and UAV-related channel modeling of those candidate technologies are reviewed. A discussion of current technologies for building UAV mesh networks is presented. We then analyze the structure, interface and performance of robotic communication middleware, ROS and ROS2. Abstract

Surface Electromyography (sEMG) signals are widely used as input to control robotic devices, prosthetic limbs, exoskeletons, among other devices, and provide information about someone’s intention to perform a particular movement. However, the redundant action of 32 muscles in the forearm and hand means that the neuromotor system can select different combinations of muscular activities to perform the same grasp, and these combinations could differ among subjects, and even among the trials done by the same subject. In this work, 22 healthy subjects performed seven representative grasp types (the most commonly used). sEMG signals were recorded from seven representative forearm spots identified in a previous work. Intra- and intersubject variability are presented by using four sEMG characteristics: muscle activity, zero crossing, enhanced wavelength and enhanced mean absolute value. The results confirmed the presence of both intra- and intersubject variability, which evidences the existence of distinct, yet limited, muscle patterns while executing the same grasp. This work underscores the importance of utilizing diverse combinations of sEMG features or characteristics of various natures, such as time-domain or frequency-domain, and it is the first work to observe the effect of considering different muscular patterns during grasps execution. This approach is applicable for fine-tuning the control settings of current sEMG devices.

Abstract

The Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) on the {\it Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope}, for the first time, detected a short gamma ray burst (SGRB) signal that accompanies a gravitational wave signal GW170817 in 2017. The detection and localization of the gravitational wave and gamma-ray source led all other space- and ground-based observatories to measure its kilonova and afterglow across the electromagnetic spectrum, which started a new era in astronomy, the so-called multi-messenger astronomy. Therefore, localizations of short gamma-ray bursts, as counterparts of verified gravitational waves, is of crucial importance since this will allow observatories to measure the kilonovae and afterglows associated with these explosions. Our results show that, an automated network of observatories, such as the Stellar Observations Network Group (SONG), can be coupled with an interconnected multi-hop array of CubeSats for transients (IMPACT) to localize SGRBs. IMPACT is a mega-constellation of $\sim$80 CubeSats, each of which is equipped with gamma-ray detectors with ultra-high temporal resolution to conduct full sky surveys in an energy range of 50-300 keV and downlink the required data promptly for high accuracy localization of the detected SGRB to a ground station. Additionally, we analyze propagation and transmission delays from receipt of a SGRB signal to ground station offload to consider the effects of constellation design, link, and network parameters such as satellites per plane, data rate, and coding gain from erasure correcting codes among others. IMPACT will provide near-real-time localization of SGRBs with a total delay of $\sim$5 s, and will enable SONG telescopes to join the efforts to pursue multi-messenger astronomy and help decipher the underlying physics of these events.

21. Post-release ecology of rehabilitated Hoffmann’s two-toed sloths in Panamá

Abstract

The field of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation continues to grow as human expansion increases the rate of deforestation in Latin America. Sloths (Bradypus spp. and Choloepus spp.) are often admitted to rescue centers throughout Latin America due to their poor dispersal abilities and vulnerability to anthropogenic impacts. Although post-release monitoring is fundamental to measuring the success of wildlife rescue programs, few studies have assessed the outcomes of releasing hand-reared sloths back into the wild. We studied the ecology of rehabilitated and relocated Hoffmann’s two-toed sloths (Choloepus hoffmanni) in central Panamá during 2019- 2020. Eleven two-toed sloths rescued from the wild were hand-reared in captivity for 727±193 days and then radiomarked, placed in an outdoor 500 m2 soft-release enclosure for 3 months, and released in a nearby national park. While in the softrelease enclosure, two-toed sloths spent 80.0% of their time resting and became active and more alert in the evening (p=0.01). Upon release into the wild, two-toed sloths traveled a mean linear distance of 82.3±21.6 m and a mean distance of 25.6±9.5 m between successive radiolocations. The mean home range size was 2.92±1.19 ha, with females occupying larger areas than males. Two-toed sloths used trees with a smaller dbh than available (p≤0.001; p≤0.015) and selected trees with dense crowns and ≥50% lianas. Eight mortalities were recorded, with predation and natural causes being the main causes of mortality. Monthly survival was 0.72±0.14 and did not differ (p≤0.30) between males (1.00±0.00) and females (0.44±0.22). Rehabilitated two-toed sloths exhibited behavioral and space use patterns similar to wild two-toed sloths, with the exception of having lower survival rates following release in the wild. Our study provides information that can be useful in evaluating the efficacy of sloth rescue and rehabilitation programs throughout Latin America.

22. Using Machine Learning Methods to Forecast If Solar Flares Will Be Associated with CMEs and SEPs

Abstract

Among the eruptive activity phenomena observed on the Sun, the most technology threatening ones are flares with associated coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and solar energetic particles (SEPs). Flares with associated CMEs and SEPs are produced by magnetohydrodynamical processes in magnetically active regions (ARs) on the Sun. However, these ARs do not only produce flares with associated CMEs and SEPs, they also lead to flares and CMEs, which are not associated with any other event. In an attempt to distinguish flares with associated CMEs and SEPs from flares and CMEs, which are unassociated with any other event, we investigate the performances of two machine learning algorithms. To achieve this objective, we employ support vector machines (SVMs) and multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) using data from the Space Weather Database of Notification, Knowledge, Information (DONKI) of NASA Space Weather Center, {\it the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite} ({\it GOES}), and the Space-Weather Heliospheric and Magnetic Imager Active Region Patches (SHARPs). We show that True Skill Statistics (TSS) and Heidke Skill Scores (HSS) calculated for SVMs are slightly better than those from the MLPs. We also show that the forecasting time frame of 96 hours provides the best results in predicting if a flare will be associated with CMEs and SEPs (TSS=0.92$\pm$0.09 and HSS=0.92$\pm$0.08). Additionally, we obtain the maximum TSS and HSS values of 0.91$\pm$0.06 for predicting that a flare will not be associated with CMEs and SEPs for the 36 hour forecast window, while the 108 hour forecast window give the maximum TSS and HSS values for predicting CMEs will not be accompanying any events (TSS=HSS=0.98$\pm$0.02).

Abstract

In this manuscript, we report the facile fabrication of large-area model membranes with highly uniform and high aspect ratio pores with diameters <20 nm. These membranes are useful for fundamental investigations of separation by size exclusion in the ultrafiltration regime, where species to be separated from solution have dimensions of 1–100 nm. Such investigations require membranes with narrow pores and high aspect ratios such that the Hagen–Poiseuille equation is followed, enabling well-known models such as the hindered transport model to be evaluated and other affecting factors to be ignored. We demonstrate that the sub-20 nm pores in the membrane are of sufficiently high aspect ratio such that water flux through the membrane is consistent with the Hagen–Poiseuille equation. The fabrication relies on self-assembling block copolymers to form uniform, densely packed patterns with sub-20 nm resolution, sequential infiltration synthesis to convert the block copolymer in situ into a mask with adequate contrast to etch pores with an aspect ratio >5, and low-resolution photolithography to transfer the pattern over a large area into a silicon nitride membrane. Model membranes with narrow pore-size distribution fabricated in this way provide the means to investigate parameters that impact size-selective ultrafiltration separations such as the relationships between solute or particle size and pore size, their distributions, and rejection profiles, and, therefore, test the validity or limits of separation models. Abstract

Data-driven agriculture and Internet of Farming (IoF) require reliable communication systems. Nowadays, only some of the key use cases demanded by the agricultural industry verticals get support from multiple state of the art wireless technologies such as 4G, Wi-Fi, or Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technologies, combined with satellite and cloud access. However, the ones demanding very high data rates or very low latency are still not feasible. With 5G, designed for flexible support of Extreme Mobile Broadband (xMBB), Massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC) and Ultra-reliable Machine-Type Communications (uMTC), more agricultural use cases will be possible. This paper provides a reference list of data-driven agriculture scenarios and use cases with their associated communication requirements, and whose feasibility is evaluated in a live 5G trial performed in a representative rural area scenario in the south of Denmark. The paper details a reference methodology for assessing 5G Quality of Service (QoS), including multi-connectivity schemes and reports the empirical 5G performance results, which are put in perspective of the requirements for the different IoF reference scenarios. The empirical results indicate that early 5G deployments are already capable of reliably serving data-driven agriculture vertical use cases such as those related to agricultural logistics or configuration of machinery and diagnostics in 65.8-99% of the cases; but it will be necessary to wait for 5G network upgrades and coming 5G Releases in order to operate the more low latency demanding use cases.

Abstract

The energetically favorable formation of atomically precise clusters, known as magic size clusters, in the solution phase enables a precision nanoscale synthesis with exquisite uniformity. We report the synthesis of magic size clusters via vapor infiltration of atomic layer deposition precursors directly in a polymer thin film. Sequential infiltration of trimethylindium vapor and hydrogen sulfide gas into poly(methyl methacrylate) leads to the formation of clusters with uniform properties consistent with a magic size cluster─In6S6(CH3)6. While an increase in cluster size might be expected with additional sequential infiltration cycles of the reactive In and S precursors, uniform properties consistent with magic size clusters form in multiple polymers under a range of processing conditions. Ultraviolet–visible absorption spectra of In6S6(CH3)6are largely independent of the number of sequential infiltration cycles and exhibit air stability, both of which are attributed to an energetically favorable synthetic pathway that is evaluated with density functional theory.

Abstract

Imogolite nanotubes (INTs) are predicted as a unique 1D material with spatial separation of conduction and valence band edges but their large band gaps have inhibited their use as photocatalysts. The first step toward using these NTs in photocatalysis and exploiting the polarization‐promoted charge separation across their walls is to reduce their band gap. Here, the modification of double‐walled aluminogermanate INTs by incorporation of titanium into the NT walls is explored. The precursor ratio x = [Ti]/([Ge]+[Ti]) is modulated between 0 and 1. Structural and optical properties are determined at different scales and the photocatalytic performance is evaluated for H2 production. Although the incorporation of Ti atoms into the structure remains limited, the optimal condition is found around x = 0.4 for which the resulting NTs reveal a remarkable hydrogen production of ≈1500 µmol g−1 after 5 h for a noble metal‐free photocatalyst, a 65‐fold increase relative to a commercial TiO2‐P25. This is correlated to a lowering of the recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers for the most active structures. These results confirm the theoretical predictions regarding the potential of modified INTs as photoactive nanoreactors and pave the way for investigating and exploiting their polarization properties for energy applications. Abstract

To date, high-resolution electron microscopy has largely relied on using the phase of the exit wave function at the exit surface to form a high-resolution electron microscopic image. We have for the first time used chromatic aberration correction to implement a new imaging mode to achieve amplitude contrast imaging in high-resolution electron microscopy, allowing us to obtain directly interpretable high-resolution electron microscopic images with discrimination between light and heavy atomic columns. Using this imaging approach, we have successfully visualized the atomic structure in a BaTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattice with high spatial accuracy and discrimination between Ba and Ca columns, providing direct visualization of the Ca and Ba associated oxygen octahedral tilt that controls ferroelectric behavior in these superlattice structures. Furthermore, this approach offers new opportunities to unravel the structure in a wide range of materials, especially complex oxides with exotic behaviors based on specific structural arrangements., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations are envisioned as a complementary or integrated part of 5G and future 6G networks for broadband or massive access, given their capabilities of full Earth coverage in inaccessible or very isolated environments. Although the queuing and end-to-end delays of such networks have been analyzed for channels with fixed statistics, currently there is a lack in understanding the effects of more realistic time-varying channels for traffic aggregation across such networks. Therefore, in this work we propose a queuing model for LEO constellation-based networks that captures the inherent variability of realistic satellite channels, where ground-to-satellite/satellite-to-ground links may present extremely poor connection periods due to the Land Mobile Satellite (LMS) channel. We verify the validity of our model with an extensive event-driven simulator framework analysis capturing the characteristics of the considered scenario. We later study the queuing and end-to-end delay distributions under such channels with various link, traffic, packet and background conditions, while observing good match between theory and simulation. Our results show that ground-to-satellite/satellite-to-ground links and background traffic have a much stronger impact over the end-to-end delay in mean and particularly variance, even with moderate queues, than unobstructed inter-satellite connections in outer space on an established path between two ground stations and through the constellation. This might hinder the usability of these networks for services with stringent time requirements.
