1. The role of surface material properties on the behavior of ionic liquids in nanoconfinement: A critical review and perspective

Abstract

Room temperature ionic liquids show great promise as electrolytes in various technological applications, such as energy storage or electrotunable lubrication. These applications are particularly intriguing due to the specific behavior of ionic liquids in nanoconfinement. While previous research has been focused on optimizing the required characteristics through the selection of electrolyte properties, the contribution of confining material properties in these systems has been largely overlooked. In this Review, we provide constructive analysis of recent developments related to the description of surface material properties impact on the ionic liquid behavior in the confinement and propose potential ways for further investigations in this direction. Although the presented advances reveal the importance of surface material properties in the application processes with confined ionic liquids, there are still a lot of issues that should be thoroughly investigated in future. 2. Mechanism of overscreening breakdown by electrode surface morphology in asymmetric ionic liquids

Abstract

The interfacial nature of the electric double layer (EDL) assumes that electrode surface morphology significantly impacts the EDL properties. Since molecular-scale roughness modifies the structure of EDL, it is expected to disturb the overscreening effect and alter differential capacitance (DC). In this Letter, we present a model that describes EDL near atomically rough electrodes with account for short-range electrostatic correlations. We provide numerical and analytical solutions for the analysis of conditions for the overscreening breakdown and DC shift estimation. Our findings reveal that electrode surface structure leads to DC decrease and can both brake or enhance overscreening depending on the relation of surface roughness to electrostatic correlation length and ion size asymmetry., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures

3. Molecular scale ion separation driven by surface roughness and ion size asymmetry: new analytical solutions for differential capacitance of EDL

Abstract

Electrode surface roughness significantly impacts the structure of electric double layer on a molecular scale. We derive analytical solutions for differential capacitance (DC) of electric double layer near rough electrode surface, comparing them with a range of experimental and numerical studies. Two causes of ions separation are considered: ion size asymmetry and electrode surface roughness. The model has three scale parameters determining DC properties: the Debye length, difference of ion penetration depths, and surface roughness parameter. For the first time, DC profile with more than two peaks was obtained analytically due to account for ions reorientation effect. The model predicts DC curve transform from bell to camel and inverse induced by electrode surface roughness. The behavior of DC-potential relation with temperature and ion size ratio diverges depending on the type of ions separation. Additionally, we provide analytical solutions for zero charge potential and demonstrate roughness effect on its value. 5. Adaptive intermolecular interaction parameters for accurate Mixture Density Functional Theory calculations

Abstract

The description of fluid mixtures molecular behavior is significant for various industry fields due to the complex composition of fluid found in nature. Statistical mechanics approaches use intermolecular interaction potential to predict fluids behavior on the molecular scale. The paper provides a comparative analysis of mixing rules applications for obtaining intermolecular interaction parameters of mixture components. These parameters are involved in the density functional theory equation of state for mixtures (Mixture DFT EoS) and characterize thermodynamic mixture properties in the bulk. The paper demonstrates that Mixture DFT EoS with proper intermolecular parameters agrees well with experimental mixtures isotherms in bulk for different mixtures. However, predictions of vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) experimental data are not successful. Halgren HHG, Waldman - Hagler, and adaptive mixing rules that adjust on the experimental data from the literature are used for the first time to obtain intermolecular interaction parameters for the mixture DFT model. The results obtained provide a base for understanding how to validate the DFT fluid mixture model for calculating thermodynamic properties of fluid mixtures on a micro and macro scale., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

6. Linking Theoretical and Simulation Approaches to Study Fluids in Nanoporous Media: Classical Molecular Dynamics and Density Functional Theory

Abstract

We propose an approach that links density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to study fluid behavior in nanopores in contact with bulk (macropores). It consists of two principal steps. First, the theoretical calculation of fluid composition and density distribution in nanopore under specified thermodynamic conditions using DFT. Second, MD simulation of the confined system with obtained characteristics. Thus, we investigate an open system in a grand canonical ensemble. This method allows us to investigate both structural and dynamic properties of confined fluid at given bulk conditions and do not require computationally expensive simulation of bulk reservoir. In this work, we obtain equilibrium density profiles of pure methane, ethane and carbon dioxide and their binary mixtures in slitlike nanopores with carbon walls. Good agreement of structures obtained by theory and simulation confirms the applicability of the proposed method.

7. Variation Free Approach for Molecular Density Functional Theory: Data-driven Stochastic Optimization

Abstract

Density functional theory (DFT) is an efficient instrument for describing a wide range of nanoscale phenomena: wetting transition, capillary condensation, adsorption, etc. In this paper, we suggest a method for obtaining the equilibrium molecular fluid density in a nanopore using DFT without calculating the free energy variation - Variation Free Density Functional Theory (VF-DFT). This technique can be used to explore confined fluids with a complex type of interactions, additional constraints and to speed up calculations, which might be crucial in an inverse problems. The fluid density in VF-DFT approach is represented as a decomposition over a limited set of basis functions. We applied Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to extract the basic patterns from the density function and take them into account in the construction of a set of basis functions. The decomposition coefficients of the fluid density by the basis were sought by stochastic optimization algorithms: genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO) to minimize the free energy of the system. In this work, two different fluids were studied: nitrogen at a temperature of 77.4 K and argon 87.3 K, at a pore of 3.6 nm, and the performance of optimization algorithms was compared. We also introduce the Hybrid Density Functional Theory (H-DFT) approach based on stochastic optimization methods and the classical Picard iteration method to find the equilibrium fluid density starting from the physically appropriate solution. The combination of Picard iteration and stochastic algorithms helps to significantly speed up the calculations of equilibrium density in the system without losing the quality of the solution, especially in cases with the high relative pressure and expressed layering structure.

Abstract

In order to study the increase in productivity of natural hydrolase producers B. subtilis (producer of amylolytic and proteolytic enzymes) and T. harzianum (producer of xylolytic and cellulolytic enzymes), the efficiency of various approaches to non-directed induced mutagenesis was studied and their comparative characteristics were carried out. Using chemical and physical mutagenesis, new highly active producers of extracellular hydrolytic enzymes B. subtilis strain MB085-1457, B. subtilis strain MB085-2701, B. subtilis strain MB085-3689, T. harzianum strain MF091-962, T. harzianum strain MF091-2093 and T. harzianum strain MF091-3416 were obtained. Comparison of various methods of induced mutagenesis, namely methods of mutagenesis using nitrosoguanidine and nitrosomethylurea, UV and gamma irradiation showed that the greatest efficiency was achieved after mutagenesis using gamma rays. Various methods of induced mutagenesis can be used not only to create effective schemes for increasing the level of accumulation of target enzymes of producers, but also to obtain new drugs based on highly productive strains of microorganisms with hydrolase activity for the purpose of using them in resource-saving technologies for processing agricultural waste (into useful resources) and reducing the negative impact on the environment.

Abstract

In the context of the unstable development of contemporary civilization, attempts to consolidate efforts among the pedagogical community to ensure the proper quality of education in the 21st century are becoming more and more relevant. It seems that the solution to such an urgent problem is feasible by developing an additive integrated model of pedagogical management based on the implementation of the integrative educational space of a pedagogical university (hereinafter – IESPU). According to the authors, the emergence and constant reproduction of relationships between the administration and employees of educational organizations of higher education to achieve the strategic goals of the university should become the main goal of developing such a pedagogical university management model. The methodological basis for the development and implementation of an additively integrated model of pedagogical management is the integrative and spatial approaches that determine the feasibility of designing IESPU and allowing providing access to the formation of teachers’ subjectivity in their own professional activities in the context of continuous personal and professional self-development. The authors consider it appropriate to offer a certain set of areas, essential in their opinion, for planning and developing an additive model of pedagogical management in the context of designing and implementing IESPU, taking into account its qualitative, spatial-temporal, socially-determined, and scientifically-grounded parameters, as well as the urban environment in which pedagogical universities are located.

32. Congenital and Acquired Interferonopathies : Differentiated Approaches to Interferon Therapy

This chapter reviews various interferon (IFN) system disturbances—interferonopathies. The authors describe clinical specifics of type I interferonopathy associated with overexpression of IFNα—which is a rare Mendelian genetic disease. Certain autoimmune diseases (systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), vasculitis, immune dysregulation syndrome, etc.) are also characterized by overproduction of IFNα. Furthermore the most common interferonopathies are described—deficiencies of IFN, congenital or acquired IFNα/IFNβ and IFNγ deficiencies in children and adults. Deficiency of IFNα/IFNβ associated with severe recurrent viral infections and deficiency of IFNγ cause mycobacterial infection. Interferon-corrective therapy methods are described. The target therapy of type I interferonopathies (biologics) binds IFNα and normalizes the high level of IFNα. From the other side, patients with congenital IFNα deficiencies are needed in replacement IFN therapy. In case of acquired IFNα deficiency, the differentiated interferon-corrective therapy is performed. In both replacement and interferon-corrective therapies, recombinant human IFNα2b in complex with antioxidants (Viferon®) can be used, because their application is safe and has good clinical efficiency and no side effects.

33. Remodeling of Phenotype CD16 + CD11b + Neutrophilic Granulocytes in Acute Viral and Acute Bacterial Infections

Neutrophilic granulocytes (NGs) are very important cells of innate immunity that can very quickly realize antibacterial and antiviral defense. Until the present time, the phenomenon of different levels of presentations of membrane receptors CD16 and CD11b NG in normal and pathological conditions wasn’t studied. We had studied the population of CD16+CD11b+NG in two groups of patients with acute viral and acute bacterial infections in the models of acute bacterial tonsillitis (ABT) and acute viral tonsillitis-EBV infection (AEBVI), having the same clinical symptoms in early stages of the disease. Comparative analysis of the redistribution of equipment intensity of CD16 and CD11b has detected three subpopulations of CD16+CD11b+NG population—CD16brightCD11bbright, CD16brightCD11bdim, and CD16dimCD11bbright—in normal and pathological conditions. It was found that subpopulation CD16brightCD11bdimNG dominates in healthy individuals; subpopulation CD16brightCD11bbrightNG dominates in patients with acute viral infection; subpopulation CD16dimCD11bbrightNG dominates in patients with acute bacterial infections. We had demonstrated that the study of CD16+CD11b+NG subpopulations allows in early stage of diseases to diagnose acute viral and acute bacterial infections. Our studies have demonstrated the positive effects of eukaryotic DNA sodium salt on the negatively altered phenotype subpopulation CD16+CD11b+NG, in particular, through the remodeling of the expression of CD11b on NG membrane.

Abstract

Ongoing climate change can shift organism phenology in ways that vary depending on species, habitats and climate factors studied. To probe for large-scale patterns in associated phenological change, we use 70,709 observations from six decades of systematic monitoring across the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Among 110 phenological events related to plants, birds, insects, amphibians and fungi, we find a mosaic of change, defying simple predictions of earlier springs, later autumns and stronger changes at higher latitudes and elevations. Site mean temperature emerged as a strong predictor of local phenology, but the magnitude and direction of change varied with trophic level and the relative timing of an event. Beyond temperature-associated variation, we uncover high variation among both sites and years, with some sites being characterized by disproportionately long seasons and others by short ones. Our findings emphasize concerns regarding ecosystem integrity and highlight the difficulty of predicting climate change outcomes.

Abstract

The relevance of this topic is determined by the increasing uncertainty of the anthropological context of the development of the information society, which triggers the new identification models. Therefore, the authors turn to the analysis of the anthropological alternative, which sets the trend for the formation of positive anthropo-images of human identity and images of the future in the context of the modern era of transformations, choices and challenges. Sociocultural and systematic approaches are leading in the study of the problem and they allow us to integrate the data on the essence, structure and content of identity available in various branches of science as a complete element of selfidentification and consider its procedural aspects as determined by environmental influences. The expediency of research logic transition from one-dimensional projections to multidimensional interpretations in the discussion of identity problems is justified. According to the authors, the result should be a revision of the structural and substantive certainties in the description and interpretation of identity problems as not complying with the contemporary requirements and the plans of anthropological projects of a future person and that it is crucial to work with the procedural characteristics of identity, which reflect its mobility, flexibility and intended incompleteness. The presented conclusions explain research procedures for describing elusive meanings of multiple identities and anthropo-images of the future in the situation of empirical diversity of the world and transformations of personality. Abstract

Thermodynamic characterization is crucial for understanding molecular interactions. However, methodologies for measuring heat changes in small open systems are extremely limited. We document a new approach for designing molecular sensors, that function as calorimeters: sensors based on memory. To design a memory‐based sensor, we take advantage of the unique kinetic properties of nucleic acid scaffolds. Particularly, we elaborate on the differences in folding and unfolding rates in nucleic acid quadruplexes. DNA‐based i‐motifs unfold fast in response to small heats but do not fold back when the system is equilibrated with surroundings. We translated this behavior into a molecular memory function that enables the measurement of heat changes in open environments. The new sensors are biocompatible, operate homogeneously, and measure small heats released over long time periods. As a proof‐of‐concept, we demonstrate how the molecular calorimeters report heat changes generated in water/propanol mixing and in ligand/protein binding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
