+ Nessorhamphus danae Schmidt, 1931 ARffiO�� Nessorhamphus danae Schmidt, 1931: 487, fig. 4 (type locality: Indian Ocean, W of Sumatra). Voucher specimen: USNM 436661. Remarks. This is a new record for the family and genus in Taiwan and is based on a single metamorphic larva from Dong-gang, SW Taiwan. It is tentatively identified as N. danae based on the position of the last vertical blood vessel (LVBV, or renal artery), at approximately myomere 65���71, which is within the range given for this species by Karmovskaya (1985). The finding of three specimens of Nessorhamphus ingolfianus (Schmidt 1912), obtained in front of Valdivia (39º 44'S; 70º 39'W) is reported. This proves to be the first record of this species for the Southeastern Pacific and for the Chilean ichthyofauna.

Publisher Summary The central area for the distribution of Anguila anguilla ( A . anguilla) is the British Isles and the coasts of the Bay of Biscay, judged from the mass occurrence of elvers ascending the rivers. This chapter examines the possible temperature effects on the number of vertebrae in Anguilla. A . marmorata has a geographical distribution right from S.E. Africa and Madagascar across the Indian Ocean to Indonesia and Taiwan, and farther in the Pacific to the Marquesas Is. Several species of Apodes breeding in the Sargasso Sea are discussed in the chapter. Nessorhamphus ingolfianus spawns in the Sargasso Sea at the same period as the Eel— that is, in spring and early summer, somewhat later in the east than in the west, and the metamorphosis of the larva takes place especially in the months of August, September, and October. As in the case of Nessorhamphus , the biology of the adults does not induce segregation into a western and an eastern population.

A VOCETTINOPS, like Cyema and Nessorhamphus, is one of the most easily recognized genera of apodal fishes. Once seen, this fish with a bird-like head (PI. I) and elongate tape-like body will neither be forgotten nor confused with any other eel. Its systematic position within the Apodes is just as definite and unmistakable, but the rank that Avocettinops should possess in the nomenclatural hierarchy of eels has been the subject of some discussion. This discussion has thus far, however, been largely confined to the principals in the issue, Bertin and Norman, the possessors of the only two known specimens of the genus.
