The present checklist of the oribatid mites compiles all known published records of Ecuador with 479 species belonging to 232 genera and 89 families; 180 of these species were described from Ecuador. Oribatid mites were found in 15 of the 24 provinces that conform the Ecuadorian territory. In the provinces of Zamora Chinchipe, Galápagos, Loja, Cotopaxi, Pichincha and Napo, 95% of the species were recorded. 23.6% of these species are known only from Ecuador, 47.8% are distributed in Neotropical region, the remaining are Pantropical, semicosmopolitan and cosmopolitan. This high number of species makes Ecuador the country with the second largest number of species records in Latin America after Brazil.

We describe herein Neoliodes andreneli sp. nov., an oribatid mite belonging to the family Neoliodidae, from the Lower Cretaceous amber of Lebanon. The new taxa is characterized, illustrated, and its systematic position is discussed. Neoliodes andreneli sp. nov. constitutes the first mite to be described from the Lebanese amber, and the earliest oribatid mite in amber.

Oribatid mites were investigated in six sites in the Alpi Marittime Natural Park (Prov. Cuneo, Piedmont, northern Italy) which is part of the NATURA 2000 network. The selected locations cover 4 forested (fir, ash, 2 beech forests) and 2 grassland sites (mountain meadow, xeric grassland). Altogether 173 described oribatid species belonging to 51 families were encountered, complemented by one undetermined species (Scheloribates (Topobates) cf. carpathicus), added together 174 species. Among them 11 species are new records for Italy. A comparison with other Italian alpine provinces shows high similarity of the oribatid species composition from the investigated sites with the provinces of Bolzano, Trento, Sondrio. A total of 37 species from the Marittime Alps has also been recorded in the southern part of the nearby Swiss canton Ticino. The majority of the species in the investigated sites are known as silvicolous; xerophilous species were mainly found in the xeric grassland site at lower altitude. High species similarities are observed between the forested sites, which also show high species numbers (up to 96 spp. found in the fir forest), lowest similarities are found between the open grassland sites and the forested sites, as well as between the grassland sites themselves.

The present study is based on oribatid mite material collected in Taiwan in 2017–2019. A list of identified taxa, including 141 species/subspecies from 88 genera and 47 families is provided; of these, 36 species/subspecies, 13 genera and five families are recorded for the first time in the Taiwan fauna, and eight species and one genus are recorded for the first time in the Oriental region. Two new species are described. Tyrphonothrus nivnu n. sp. (description based on adult) is similar to Tyrphonothrus altissimus (Piffl, 1971), T. cajamarcensis (Hammer, 1961) and T. wallworki (Starý and Block, 1995) in general morphological traits (notogastral ridges developed; tridactylous legs; notogastral setae e2, h1, h2, and p2 long, setiform, with attenuate tip, other setae of medium length, setiform; high number of genital setae; absence of notogastral ornamentation; and comparatively large body size), but differs from these listed species by the barbed notogastral setae and comparatively long notogastral setae c1, c2, c3, and e1. Jacotella puyuma n. sp. (description based on adult and tritonymph) is similar to Jacotella neonominata Subías, 2004 in general morphological traits (centrodorsal notogastral part with two longitudinal ridges, posteriorly fused, each ridge with two lateral transverse branches; absence of notogastral ornamentation; notogastral seta h1 distinctly longer than other notogastral setae), but differs from the latter by the narrowly elongate bothridial head, flagellate notogastral setae h1 and p1, the length of notogastral setae, and the absence of additional longitudinal ridges connected lateral branches of median ridges (in adult); and by the long gastronotic seta h1 similar in length to bothridial seta, seta h2 similar to h3 and lp and seta dm clearly longer than da on larval exuvium (in tritonymph)., Acarologia, 61, 297-320

This checklist of the oribatid fauna of Canada and Alaska (excluding Astigmata) includes 580 identified species in 249 genera and 96 families. The known fauna of Canada includes 556 identified species in 247 genera, and that of Alaska includes 182 species in 95 genera; 39 of the 42 oribatid superfamilies are represented. We further list ~ 300 species that are currently unidentified, and possibly undescribed. In addition, we list 42 genera that are represented only by unidentified and probably undescribed species. For each species we give combinations and synonymies, specific locations in Alaska and the Provinces and Territories of Canada, habitats, and biogeography. There are 182 identified species known for Alaska, 152 for Yukon, 122 for Northwest Territories, 58 for Nunavut; 210 for British Columbia, 213 for Alberta, 15 for Saskatchewan, 84 for Manitoba, 167 for Ontario, 210 for Québec, 110 for Nova Scotia, 77 for New Brunswick, 84 for Newfoundland and 6 for Prince Edward Island. The known fauna of Canada is smaller than that of Austria, and is approximately equivalent to that of the Czech Republic. As these countries are much smaller in size than Canada and less ecologically diverse, we consider the Canadian and Alaskan fauna are at most 25% known. The paucity of these data reflects the absence of taxonomic and faunistic studies on Oribatida in State, Provinces or Territories, and especially in the Canadian and Alaskan National Park systems and the hundreds of Provincial Parks. Despite the almost 90% increase in described species since the catalogue of Marshall et al. (1987), there is a need for focussed, coordinated research on Oribatida in the natural regions throughout Canada and Alaska, and for monographs on families and genera with large numbers of undescribed species, such as Brachychthoniidae, Damaeidae, Cepheidae, Liacaridae, Oppiidae, Suctobelbidae, Hydrozetidae, Phenopelopidae, Scheloribatidae, Haplozetidae and Galumnidae.

Body cuticle colorless to light brownish, covered by thick layer of gel-like cerotegument, which forms polygonal depressions and polygonal ornamentation on the dorsoanterior part of prodorsum. Sternal and anogenital regions and subcapitular mentum in all instars, gastronotic region in larva, lateral parts of gastronotic regions in nymphs folded. Prodorsum (Figs 1, 3, 4). Relatively short, about 2/5 length of gastronotic region. Rostrum broadly rounded. One pair of dorsolateral longitudinal prodorsal ridges present. Rostral, lamellar, interlamellar and exobothridial setae slightly phylliform, dilated in median part, barbed, inserted on tubercles. Bothridial setae clavate to fusiform, barbed, with stalks slightly longer than heads. Setae lengths during ontogeny are presented in Table 1. Gastronotic region (Figs 1���6, 10���12). Triangularly rounded posteriorly, with longest setae h 1. Larvae with nine pairs of true setae (da, dm, dp, la, lm, lp, h 1, h 2, h 3), but small p 1, p 2 also present; nymphs with five pairs of setae (h 1, h 2, p 1, p 2, p 3). Juvenile instars slimmer than adult, unpigmented, light brownish or flesh-colored, covered by thick layer of gel-like cerotegument partially with polygonal depressions and folds. The prodorsum is stockier in juveniles than in adult, whereas the gastronotum is stockier in nymphs than in larva. In larva, a pair of dorsolateral longitudinal ridges is weakly developed on prodorsum, which are strongly developed and arched in nymphs. In all instars, the prodorsal setae are narrowly phylliform slightly dilating medially; these setae are short in larva, but their lengths gradually increase from stage to stage, and become remarkably longer in tritonymph. The bothridial setae are clavate in larva, but fusiform in nymphs. The gastronotum of larva is narrowed in its posterior half bearing large excrescence, while the gastronotum of nymphs is clearly widened posteriorly with much smaller, subtriangular posterior excrescence. The larva has 11 pairs of gastronotic setae (including minute p 1 and p 2, which are almost invisible), whereas the nymphs have only five pairs of them (d - and l -series are lost). Formula of epimeral setae 3��� 1���2 in larva, 3���1���2��� 1 in protonymph; 3���1���2��� 3 in deutonymph, 3���2��� 2���3 in tritonymph. The larva has only six pairs of epimeral setae (1a, 1b, 1c, 2a, 3a and 3b), and seta 4b appears in protonymph, setae 4a and 4c are added in deutonymph, whereas seta 2b is formed in tritonymph. Norton and Franklin (2018) discussed the homologies of setae 4a and 4b, and stated that the chaetotaxy notation of epimeral setae during ontogeny of oribatid mites has been inconsistently applied in the literature due to apparent incongruence in setal positions. According to their suggestions, in the majority of oribatid mites from all main groups, a single pair of setae appeared when epimere IV first forms in the protonymph, is 4b, but not 4a. They found that seta 4a is delayed one instar during the ontogeny, while 4b is unaffected, i.e. pair 4b are protonymphal, 4a are deutonymphal. Similarly, we would denote the single epimere IV pair in Teleioliodes, also protonymphal, as 4b. The number of genital setae gradually increases from protonymph to tritonymph. A pair of genital setae along with three pairs of adanal setae are formed first in protonymph, the latter remain unchanged in the successive stages. Four pairs of genital setae appear in deutonymph, and this number increases in tritonymph up to six pairs. A pair of aggenital setae and two pairs of anal setae are formed first in deutonymph, which remain unchanged in the successive stages. The adanal segment of paraproctal origin in deutonymphs and anal segments in tritonymphs have three and two pairs of setae, respectively, which remain the same in the adult stage. The number of leg setae increases from stage to stage. As in other species of Neoliodidae, evidently most leg setae first appear in the larval instar, but the number of setae increases from protonymph to tritonymph (see Table 3). In the original description of Teleioliodes ghanensis, Wallwork (1963) illustrated the exuvial scalps of larva and tritonymph, and according to him the seta lp on the larval exuvia was short. However, in our studied material, seta lp was long. The juvenile instars of oribatid mites of the family Neoliodidae are poorly known, and little information is available on the morphology of ontogenetic stages. Herein, comparative characteristics of juvenile instars of the Neoliodidae species are given based on our own data and available literature sources. The analysis of literature dealing with juveniles of Neoliodidae generated ambiguous results, as certain descriptions are incomplete partly and unclear. The major characteristics of juvenile instars of 10 neoliodid species are presented, and the morphological ontogeny of Teleioliodes ghanensis Wallwork, 1963 is investigated based on material from Oumé region of Côte d‘Ivoire, Western Africa. From these studies, it can be generalized that the juvenile morphologies of neoliodid genera have certain differences, but species within a same genus are demonstrated to have no obvious morphological difference.

A checklist of the oribatid mite species reported in Brazil is presented, including all published records up to 2015. A total of 576 described species in 206 genera and 83 families is presented. Information includes the names by which each species was reported in the Brazilian literature, its general known distribution and by Brazilian States, references, and remarks, when needed. As with most countries, there was a slow early accumulation of knowledge but in recent decades the pace of description has been relatively high. A graphical overview of the number of described oribatid mite species from Brazil in different decades is given. The proportion contributed by each of the major oribatid groups is generally similar to that of the overall world fauna, with a composition that reflects the South American fauna and all of the Neotropics in general. There is a relatively low percentage of primitive mites (Palaeosomata, Enarthronota) other than Lohmanniidae and Mesoplophoridae, which are quite diverse. The Brachypylina comprises about 68% of the oribatid mite fauna. In the checklist, 41% of the species are known only from Brazil, 37% from the Neotropical region, 13.5% have a wider distribution in the global tropical and subtropical regions, and 8.5% are considered cosmopolitan or semicosmopolitan species. The number of descriptions of new species since 2000 from Brazil (73 spp.) and South America (230) is high, but the oribatid mite fauna of these countries remains poorly known. Only continued studies can determine if the high number of species known only from Brazil is an indication of high endemism.

Eleven oribatid species were collected from the Kumaya Cave of Iheya village in Central Ryukyu Arc, South Japan. The cave is a descending horizontal tunnel of a deep-sea abysmal quartziferous deposit formed in the Permian period of the Palaeozoic era and excavated by sea erosion. The floor of the cave was covered with sand, three to four meters deep. Fragments of psephite are found at the end of the cave. Each sample of about 200 ml was collected by hand from the following five marked points of the cave on 17 March 2010: A, Sand and a fragment of psephite; B, Sand and a fragment of psephite; C, Sand, a fragment of psephite, and litter of Ficus microcarpa; D, Litter and humus of F. microcarpa and Cassytha filiformis, and sand; E, Litter and humus of F. microcarpa and C. filiformis, and sand. All species belonged to Brachypylina: Oppiella (O.) nova from A; Mabulatrichus kumayaensis sp. nov., Protoribates kumayaensis sp. nov. and Zygoribatula iheyaensis sp. nov. from B; Tectocepheus kumayaensis sp. nov. from C; Tectocepheus iheyaensis sp. nov., Oribatula kumayaensis sp. nov., Protoribates hirokous sp. nov. and Haplozetes makii sp. nov. from D; Eupelops kumayaensis sp. nov. from E; Neoliodes iheyaensis sp. nov. from C, D and E.

The genus name Liodes and the family name Liodidae have been the cause of much confusion in zoology. The genus name Liodes has been used in Acari, Lepidoptera, Opiliones, and Coleoptera, and has often been misused, misspelled, or misunderstood. This paper reviews the history of these names and the related names Leiodes and Neoliodes, and concludes that (1) the names Leiodes Latreille 1796 and Leiodidae Fleming 1821 are available for a genus and family of beetles; (2) the names Neoliodes Berlese 1888 and Neoliodidae Sellnick 1928 are available for a genus and family of mites; (3) the names Liodes and Liodidae are not available for any group of animals, and should not be used.
