Abstract KIF18B is a key member of the kinesin-8 family, involved in regulating various physiological processes such as microtubule length, spindle assembly, and chromosome alignment. This article briefly introduces the structure and physiological functions of KIF18B, examines its role in malignant tumors, and the associated carcinogenic signaling pathways such as PI3K/AKT, Wnt/β-catenin, and mTOR pathways. Research indicates that the upregulation of KIF18B enhances tumor malignancy and resistance to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. KIF18B could become a new target for anticancer drugs, offering significant potential for the treatment of malignant tumors and reducing chemotherapy resistance.

Abstract Background Vitamin D was shown to directly exert a protective effect on diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in our previous study. However, whether it has an effect on perirenal adipose tissue (PRAT) or the intestinal flora and its metabolites (trimethylamine N-oxide, TMAO) is unclear. Methods DKD mice were received different concentrations of 1,25-(OH)2D3 for 2 weeks. Serum TNF-α levels and TMAO levels were detected. 16S rRNA sequencing was used to analyze gut microbiota. qPCR was used to detect the expression of TLR4, NF-Κb, PGC1α, and UCP-1 in kidney and adipose tissue. Histological changes in kidney and perirenal adipose tissue were observed using HE, PAS, Masson and oil red staining. Immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry were used to detect the expression of VDR, PGC1α, podocin, and UCP-1 in kidney and adipose tissue. Electron microscopy was used to observe the pathological changes in the kidney. VDR knockout mice were constructed to observe the changes in the gut and adipose tissue, and immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry were used to detect the expression of UCP-1 and collagen IV in the kidney. Results 1,25-(OH)2D3 could improve the dysbiosis of the intestinal flora of mice with DKD, increase the abundance of beneficial bacteria, decrease the abundance of harmful bacteria, reduce the pathological changes in the kidney, reduce fat infiltration, and downregulate the expression of TLR4 and NF-κB in kidneys. The serum TMAO concentration in mice with DKD was significantly higher than that of the control group, and was significantly positively correlated with the urine ACR. In addition, vitamin D stimulated the expression of the surface markers PGC1α, UCP-1 and VDR in the PRAT in DKD mice, and TMAO downregulated the expression of PRAT and renal VDR. Conclusions The protective effect of 1,25-(OH)2D3 in DKD mice may affect the intestinal flora and its related metabolite TMAO on perirenal fat and kidneys.

BackgroundBladder cancer (BLCA) was recognized as a significant public health challenge due to its high incidence and mortality rates. The influence of molecular subtypes on treatment outcomes was well-acknowledged, necessitating further exploration of their characterization and application. This study was aimed at enhancing the understanding of BLCA by mapping its molecular heterogeneity and developing a robust prognostic model using single-cell and bulk RNA sequencing data. Additionally, immunological characteristics and personalized treatment strategies were investigated through the risk score.MethodsSingle-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data from GSE135337 and bulk RNA-seq data from several sources, including GSE13507, GSE31684, GSE32894, GSE69795, and TCGA-BLCA, were utilized. Molecular subtypes, particularly the basal-squamous (Ba/Sq) subtype associated with poor prognosis, were identified. A prognostic model was constructed using LASSO and Cox regression analyses focused on genes linked with the Ba/Sq subtype. this model was validated across internal and external datasets to ensure predictive accuracy. High- and low-risk groups based on the risk score derived from TCGA-BLCA data were analyzed to examine their immune-related molecular profiles and treatment responses.ResultsSix molecular subtypes were identified, with the Ba/Sq subtype being consistently associated with poor prognosis. The prognostic model, based on basal-squamous subtype-related genes (BSSRGs), was shown to have strong predictive performance across diverse clinical settings with AUC values at 1, 3, and 5 years indicating robust predictability in training, testing, and entire datasets. Analysis of the different risk groups revealed distinct immune infiltration and microenvironments. Generally higher tumor mutation burden (TMB) scores and lower tumor immune dysfunction and exclusion (TIDE) scores were exhibited by the low-risk group, suggesting varied potentials for systemic drug response between the groups. Finally, significant differences in potential systemic drug response rates were also observed between risk groups.ConclusionsThe study introduced and validated a new prognostic model for BLCA based on BSSRGs, which was proven effective in prognosis prediction. The potential for personalized therapy, optimized by patient stratification and immune profiling, was highlighted by our risk score, aiming to improve treatment efficacy. This approach was promised to offer significant advancements in managing BLCA, tailoring treatments based on detailed molecular and immunological insights.

Female adults of the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria manilensis (Meyen), can sense seasonal photoperiod changes, which induces embryonic diapause as a key strategy to overwinter. Serine protease inhibitor genes (SPNs) were thought to play key roles during diapause, while few SPNs were functionally characterized. LmSPN2 was one of those genes differentially expressed between diapause and non-diapause eggs; however, its biological function remained to be explored. So, we conducted RNAi knockdown of LmSPN2, resulting in a significant decrease of the egg diapause rate by 29.7%. Using yeast two-hybrid assays, co-immunoprecipitation, and pull-down methods, we found an interaction between LmSPN2 and LmSPN3, which was proved to be mediated by a glutamate (E331) binding site of LmSPN2. RNAi knockdown of LmSPN3 resulted in a significant increase in diapause rate by 14.6%, indicating an inverse function of LmSPN2 and LmSPN3 on diapause regulation. Double knockdown of two SPN genes resulted in a 26.4% reduction in diapause rate, indicating that LmSPN2 was the dominant regulatory signal. Moreover, we found four Toll pathway genes (easter, spätzle, pelle, and dorsal) upregulated significantly after the knockdown of LmSPN2 while downregulated after the knockdown of LmSPN3. Therefore, we speculate that two SPNs regulate diapause through the Toll pathway. Our results indicated that LmSPN2 positively regulates locust egg entry into diapause, while LmSPN3 is a negative regulator of embryonic commitment to diapause. Their interaction is mediated by the binding site of E331 and influences egg diapause through the Toll pathway. This mechanistic understanding of diapause regulation expands our understanding of insect developmental regulation and provides functional targets for developing locust management strategies.

Objectives: Rebleeding after hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage is a common and serious postoperative complication in neurosurgery, with high mortality and mental disability rates. The aim of this study was to establish a nomogram to analyze the role of thromboelastography in predicting rebleeding after hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage. Basic methods: We selected 375 patients with hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage who underwent surgical treatment in Yuebei People's Hospital of Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province from May 2018 to August 2022, and retrospectively analyzed the relevant data of hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage patients (including general data and clinical thromboelastography data), and analyzed the factors and thromboelastography parameters that affect rebleeding after surgery (45 cases, defined as re-examination of head CT within 72 h after surgery showed that the hematoma in the surgical area exceeded 20 ml). Abstract Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a rare malignant soft tissue sarcoma that originates from primitive mesenchymal cells with epithelial differentiation potential. It is most commonly found in the limbs and trunk. In the urinary system, it is mostly found in the kidneys. However, synovial sarcomas originating from the external urethra are extremely rare. Only one case of synovial sarcoma arising from the vulvar urethral orifice has been reported previously, and we report a second case of synovial sarcoma of the urethral orifice. In addition, a total of 16 vulvar synovial sarcomas were identified and the literature are analyzed in this report reviews from 1966 to the present.

Abstract FK506 binding proteins (FKBPs) are a highly-conserved group of proteins known to bind to FK506, an immunosuppressive drug. They play different physiological roles, including transcription regulation, protein folding, signal transduction and immunosuppression. A number of FKBP genes have been identified in eukaryotes; however, very little information about these genes has been reported in Locusta migratoria. Here, we identified and characterized 10 FKBP genes from L. migratoria. Phylogenetic analysis and comparison of domain architectures indicated that the LmFKBP family can be divided into two subfamilies and five subclasses. Developmental and tissue expression pattern analysis revealed that all LmFKBPs transcripts, including LmFKBP46, LmFKBP12, LmFKBP47, LmFKBP79, LmFKBP16, LmFKBP24, LmFKBP44b, LmFKBP53, were periodically expressed during different developmental stages and mainly expressed in the fat body, hemolymph, testis, and ovary. In brief, our work depicts a outline but panoramic picture of LmFKBP family in L. migratoria, and provides a solid foundation to further investigate the molecular functions of LmFKBPs.

Bladder cancer (BC) is a common form of urinary tract tumor, and its incidence is increasing annually. Unfortunately, an increasing number of newly diagnosed BC patients are found to have advanced or metastatic BC. Although current treatment options for BC are diverse and standardized, it is still challenging to achieve ideal curative results. However, Sulforaphane, an isothiocyanate present in cruciferous plants, has emerged as a promising anticancer agent that has shown significant efficacy against various cancers, including bladder cancer. Recent studies have demonstrated that Sulforaphane not only induces apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in BC cells, but also inhibits the growth, invasion, and metastasis of BC cells. Additionally, it can inhibit BC gluconeogenesis and demonstrate definite effects when combined with chemotherapeutic drugs/carcinogens. Sulforaphane has also been found to exert anticancer activity and inhibit bladder cancer stem cells by mediating multiple pathways in BC, including phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2), zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1)/beta-catenin (β-Catenin), miR-124/cytokines interleukin-6 receptor (IL-6R)/transcription 3 (STAT3). This article provides a comprehensive review of the current evidence and molecular mechanisms of Sulforaphane against BC. Furthermore, we explore the effects of Sulforaphane on potential risk factors for BC, such as bladder outlet obstruction, and investigate the possible targets of Sulforaphane against BC using network pharmacological analysis. This review is expected to provide a new theoretical basis for future research and the development of new drugs to treat BC.

Secondary neoplasms of the testes from solid tumors are rare and usually present as a painless mass. Metastatic cecum signet-ring cell cancer of the testis is extremely rare. The orchioncus usually shows hypervascularity on color Doppler ultrasound. The present study reports an unusual case of testicular secondary signet-ring cell carcinoma mimicking missed testicular torsion in a 55-year-old male patient with right scrotal swelling and intermittent pain for 10 days. As color Doppler ultrasound showed an avascular distribution of the enlarged right testis, missed testicular torsion was initially diagnosed. Right-sided orchiectomy was performed, and pathology of the resected testis revealed an intestinal-type adenocarcinoma with mucinous and signet-ring cell features. This pathological feature led to further endoscopic colorectal biopsy of the digestive tract, which revealed poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma of the cecum with signet ring cell features similar to those of testicular specimens. In conclusion, differential diagnosis should be considered for rare testicular neoplasms, as was seen in this rare occurrence of testicular torsion in a patient who initially presented with metastatic colorectal cancer. A correct preoperative diagnosis can change the management and outcome. This report shares our reasons for misdiagnosis and opinions on diagnosing and treating this kind of case.

Para-testicular rhabdomyosarcoma (PTRMS) is a rare tumor, and it accounts for 7% of all rhabdomyosarcoma tumors. Among all the rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) types, the spindle cell RMS is extremely rare. The present study describes a case of a para-testicular spindle cell RMS that was treated with a radical inguinal orchiectomy (RIO) and right scrotal resection. A 17-year-old male patient presented with a half-year history of a rapidly growing, painless, right scrotal mass. His CT of the pelvic cavity showed a mixed-density mass in the right scrotum, and the maximum cross-sectional area was approximately 76.5 mm × 64.5 mm. An X-ray of the chest demonstrated no evidence of metastasis, and a local surgical excision was performed subsequently. The histopathological and immunohistochemical examination confirmed the final diagnosis of spindle cell RMS. As a newly diagnosed case, strict and regular follow-up is needed. This article focuses on the importance of prompt recognition, diagnosis, pathological features, and appropriate management of para-testicular spindle cell RMS.

Abstract The battery management system (BMS) is the main safeguard of a battery system for electric propulsion and machine electrification. It is tasked to ensure reliable and safe operation of battery cells connected to provide high currents at high voltage levels. In addition to effectively monitoring all the electrical parameters of a battery pack system, such as the voltage, current, and temperature, the BMS is also used to improve the battery performance with proper safety measures within the system. With growing acceptance of lithium-ion batteries, major industry sectors such as the automotive, renewable energy, manufacturing, construction, and even some in the mining industry have brought forward the mass transition from fossil fuel dependency to electric powered machinery and redefined the world of energy storage. Hence, the functional safety considerations, which are those relating to automatic protection, in battery management for battery pack technologies are particularly important to ensure that the overall electrical system, regardless of whether it is for electric transportation or stationary energy storage, is in accordance with high standards of safety, reliability, and quality. If the system or product fails to meet functional and other safety requirements on account of faulty design or a sequence of failure events, then the environment, people, and property could be endangered. This paper analyzed the details of BMS for electric transportation and large-scale energy storage systems, particularly in areas concerned with hazardous environment. The analysis covers the aspect of functional safety that applies to BMS and is in accordance with the relevant industrial standards. A comprehensive evaluation of the components, architecture, risk reduction techniques, and failure mode analysis applicable to BMS operation was also presented. The article further provided recommendations on safety design and performance optimization in relation to the overall BMS integration.

Abstract Rice is a crucial food crop worldwide. The genetic diversity in rice germplasm indicates its promising potential utilization in disease and pest control. To explore the relationship between genetic diversity and disease resistance in rice plants, multi-genotype rice varieties developed from multi-parent advanced generation inter-cross (MAGIC) population lines were used here to analyze the correlation between disease occurrence and genetic diversity, as well as for field monitoring of their disease occurrences and yields. We found that genetic diversity and disease resistance of the multi-genotype varieties tested in this study were superior to those of their component lines and mono-genotype varieties, and the incidence of rice blast disease decreased as the genetic diversity of multi-genotype rice varieties increased. We further conducted field trials using these multi-genotype varieties for three years in different rice-planting areas. The results showed that multi-genotype varieties exhibited good disease resistance and high-yielding potential. Thus, proper use of multi-genotype varieties characterized by rich genetic diversity is a promising approach to improve disease resistance of rice plants in agricultural production systems and is of great significance for ensuring food security and achieving sustainable agricultural development.

Abstract Background Nonfunctional bladder paragangliomas is a rare urological disease. It may present clinical, radiology and pathological features similar to bladder cancer, Only scarce reports have been reported. Urologist must identify this generally benign neuroendocrine neoplasm to avoid misdiagnosis. Case presentation A 62-year-old female presented the outpatient department of our hospital with the symptoms of stomachache, frequent micturition, and urination pain for 20 days. Diagnosed with high blood pressure 1 year ago, administered Amlodipine besylate tablets 5 mg po qd occasionally, did not check blood pressure; denied any tumor observation in the family history. Color ultrasound of the urinary system showed a 38 mm × 34 mm hypoechoic mass on the right side of the bladder, CDFI: in the masses, blood supply was sufficient. Cystoscope showed bladder occupying lesion. Biopsy diagnosis: papillary polypoid cystitis was suspected as a malignant change (Fig. 3a). Then, the patient was admitted to our urological department. Further, computer tomography urography considered bladder cancer. Cystoscopy and biopsy failed to define the nature of the lesions in our outpatient department, which prompted a transurethral resection of the bladder tumor. histopathological and immunohistochemical results were diagnosed as bladder paragangliomas. For the reason, the tumor was removed by partial resection of the bladder. The postoperative recovery and follow-up were uneventful. Conclusions Nonfunctional bladder paragangliomas are occasionally found on imaging studies with the symptoms of urinary tract infection or/and intermittent painless hematuria. It may present clinical, radiology and pathological features similar to bladder cancer, so knowledge of this generally benign neuroendocrine neoplasm is of great importance to avoid misdiagnosis. It should be accompanied by the clinical and pathological characteristics of the patient and image changes. Partial resection of the bladder can effectively treat this disease.

Teratomas are very rare, originating from embryonal germ layers. The majority of them are mature, most common in the gonads, and with only 15% out of gonads. In particular, primary adrenal teratomas are extremely rare. The present study reported a case of a young female patient with right adrenal tumor who underwent intermittent pain in the right waist and abdomen and whose CT of adrenal gland showed an 88 mm × 79 mm × 69 mm mass. Besides, her adrenal gland-related hormones are not abnormal. Laparoscopic adrenal tumor resection was performed on her and the histopathological results confirmed that the mass was mature adrenal teratomas. As a newly diagnosed case, strict and regular follow-up is needed, and it is also necessary to detect her AFP and check her adrenal CT in the future. In addition, we have reviewed the literature from 1952 to the present, and a total of 49 cases of adrenal teratoma have been identified and analyzed.

Aiming at the difficulty of unstable pattern recognition after power system fault, a novel identification framework for transient instability mode identification based on knowledge discovery by accuracy maximization (KODAMA) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) algorithm is proposed. In this method, the transient stability of all typical fault scenarios of power system is obtained firstly by XGBoost. Then, to make full use of the structure of the raw data and mine the contained data information, a novel data mining algorithm KODAMA is introduced to cluster the mode of rotor angle in case of instability, thus to convert pattern-unlabeled case data into pattern-labeled data. Finally, based on this labeled data, to fully reflect the dynamic characteristics, a multiple XGBoost assessment strategy is designed to recognize different instable modes. The proposed technique is tested on the Nordic test system, and the results indicate that the proposed approach can provide fast and accurate recognition of instable mode and has a certain prospect of online application.

Abstract To take full advantage of the flexibility of access and disconnection from smart grid, organizing distributed renewable energy resources in form of microgrid becomes one solution of energy replenishment in smart grid. A large amount of accurate and comprehensive information data are needed to be monitored by a variety of different types of sensors to guarantee the effective operation of this kind of microgrid. Energy consumption of microgrid monitoring WSN consequently becomes an issue. This paper presents a novel lifetime prolongation algorithm based on cooperative coverage of different types of sensors. Firstly, according to the requirements of monitoring business, the construction of cooperative coverage sets and connected monitoring WSN are discussed. Secondly, energy consumption is analyzed based on cooperative coverage. Finally, the cooperative coverage-based lifetime prolongation algorithm (CC-LP) is proposed. Both the energy consumption balancing inside the cooperative coverage set and the switching scheduling between cooperative coverage sets are discussed. Then, we draw into an improved ant colony optimization algorithm to calculate the switching scheduling. Simulation results show that this novel algorithm can effectively prolong the lifetime of monitoring WSN, especially in the monitoring area with a large deployed density of different types of sensors.

Stability of the internal kink (IK) mode is numerically investigated with inclusion of the anisotropic thermal transport effect and the toroidal plasma flow. It is found that anisotropic thermal transport, in combination with plasma flow, stabilizes the IK in two ways. One is direct stabilization of the mode synergistically with plasma flow. The other, indirect stabilization involves generation of a finite mode frequency in static plasmas by thermal transport, which in turn invokes wave-wave resonance damping of the mode via interaction with stable shear Alfvén waves. This second IK stabilization mechanism is further corroborated by examining the eigenmode structure, which peaks at the radial locations where the mode frequency matches that of the shear Alfvén wave. Finally, two branches of unstable IK are identified, with mode conversion occurring at certain plasma flow speed and thermal transport level. These findings provide new physics insights in the IK stability in tokamak fusion plasmas.

The lattice-based CRYSTALS-Dilithium scheme is one of the three thirdround digital signature finalists in the National Institute of Standards and Technology Post-Quantum Cryptography Standardization Process. Due to the complex calculations and highly individualized functions in Dilithium, its hardware implementations face the problems of large area requirements and low efficiency. This paper proposes several optimization methods to achieve a compact and high-performance hardware architecture for round 3 Dilithium. Specifically, a segmented pipelined processing method is proposed to reduce both the storage requirements and the processing time. Moreover, several optimized modules are designed to improve the efficiency of the proposed architecture, including a pipelined number theoretic transform module, a SampleInBall module, a Decompose module, and three modular reduction modules. Compared with state-of-the-art designs for Dilithium on similar platforms, our implementation requires 1.4×/1.4×/3.0×/4.5× fewer LUTs/FFs/BRAMs/DSPs, respectively, and 4.4×/1.7×/1.4× less time for key generation, signature generation, and signature verification, respectively, for NIST security level 5.

The entomopathogen Metarhizium anisopliae is a facultative rhizosphere or endophytic fungus available for managing pests and improving plant growth. The CFEM (common in fungal extracellular membrane) proteins form a unique group in fungi but are rarely reported in entomopathogens. In this study, we cloned and identified 13 CFEM genes from M. anisopliae (MaCFEMs). Sequence alignment and WebLogo analysis showed that eight cysteines were the most conserved amino acids in their CFEM domain. Phylogenic analysis suggested that these 13 proteins could be divided into 4 clades based on the presence of the transmembrane region and the position of CFEM domain in the whole sequence. Six MaCFEM proteins with a signal peptide and without a transmembrane domain were considered candidate effector proteins. According to Phyre2 analysis, the MaCFEM88 and MaCFEM85 have the most homologous to Csa2 in Candida albicans. Subcellular localization analysis revealed that five effectors were located in the plasma membrane, while MaCFEM88 may locate in both plasma membrane and nucleus in the treated Nicotiana benthamiana. Expression pattern analysis showed that MaCFEM81, 85, 88, and 89 expression level was significantly higher in the sporulation stage compared to other growth stages. Furthermore, the yeast secretion assay showed that six candidate effectors were able to secrete out of the cell. All of the MaCFEMs couldn’t affect INF1-induced programmed cell death (PCD), but MaCFEM85 and 88 could trigger a slight hypersensitive response both when applied separately or in combination with INF1 in N. benthamiana leaves. These findings showed that six MaCFEM potential effectors with various structures and subcellular localizations in host cells might be used to illustrate the roles of MaCFEM proteins during M. anisopliae-plant interactions.

Limited by the mechanical properties of materials, silicon (Si) carbide insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) can no longer meet the requirements of high power and high frequency electronic devices. Silicon carbide (SiC) IGBT, represented by SiC MOSFET, combines the excellent performance of SiC materials and IGBT devices, and becomes an ideal device for high-frequency and high-temperature electronic devices. Even so, the thermal fatigue failure of SiC IGBT, which directly determines its application and promotion, is a problem worthy of attention. In this study, the thermal fatigue behavior of SiC-IGBT under cyclic temperature cycles was investigated by finite element method. The finite element thermomechanical model was established, and stress-strain distribution and creep characteristics of the SnAgCu solder layer were obtained. The thermal fatigue life of the solder was predicted by the creep, shear strain and energy model respectively, and the failure position and factor of failure were discussed.

NewHope-NIST is a promising ring learning with errors (RLWE)-based postquantum cryptography (PQC) for key encapsulation mechanisms. The performance on the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) affects the applicability of NewHope-NIST. In RLWE-based PQC algorithms, the number theoretic transform (NTT) is one of the most time-consuming operations. In this paper, low-complexity NTT and inverse NTT (INTT) are used to implement highly efficient NewHope-NIST on FPGA. First, both the pre-processing of NTT and the post-processing of INTT are merged into the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm, which reduces N and 2N modular multiplications for N-point NTT and INTT, respectively. Second, a compact butterfly unit and an efficient modular reduction on the modulus 12289 are proposed for the low-complexity NTT/INTT architecture, which achieves an improvement of approximately 3× in the area time product (ATP) compared with the results of the state-of-the-art designs. Finally, a highly efficient architecture with doubled bandwidth and timing hiding for NewHope-NIST is presented. The implementation results on an FPGA show that our design is at least 2.5× faster and has 4.9× smaller ATP compared with the results of the state-of-the-art designs of NewHope-NIST on similar platforms.

Natural fiber/plastic composites combine the low density and excellent mechanical properties of the natural fiber with the flexibility and moisture resistance of the plastic to create materials tailored to specific applications in theory. Wood/plastic composites (WPC) are the most common products, but many other fibers are being explored for this purpose. Among the more common is hemp hurd. Natural fibers are hydrophilic materials and plastics are hydrophobic, therefore one problem with all of these products is the limited ability of the fiber to interact with the plastic to create a true composite. Thus, compatibilizers are often added to enhance interactions, but fiber pretreatments may also help improve compatibility. The effects of pectinase or cellulase pretreatment of wood/hemp fiber mixtures in combination with coupling agents were evaluated in polypropylene panels. Pretreatments with pectinase or cellulase were associated with reduced thickness swell (TS24h) as well as increased modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity. Incorporation of 5.0% silane or 2.5% silane/2.5% titanate as a coupling agent further improved pectinase-treated panel properties, but was associated with diminished properties in cellulase treated fibers. Combinations of enzymatic pretreatment and coupling agents enhanced fiber/plastic interactions and improved flexural properties, but the effects varied with the enzyme or coupling agent employed. The results illustrate the potential for enhancing fiber/plastic interactions to produce improved composites.

A key step for the survival of the malaria parasite is the release from and subsequent invasion of erythrocytes by the merozoite. Differences in the efficiency of these two linked processes have a direct impact on overall parasite burden in the host and thereby virulence. A number of parasite proteases have recently been shown to play important roles during both merozoite egress as well as merozoite invasion. The rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium yoelii has been extensively used to investigate the mechanisms of parasite virulence in vivo and a number of important proteins have been identified as being key contributors to pathology. Here we have utilized transcriptional comparisons to identify two protease-like SERAs as playing a potential role in virulence. We show that both SERAs are non-essential for blood stage development of the parasite though they provide a subtle but important growth advantage in vivo. In particular SERA2 appears to be an important factor in enabling the parasite to fully utilize the whole age repertoire of circulating erythrocytes. This work for the first time demonstrates the subtle contributions different protease-like SERAs make to provide the parasite with a maximal capacity to successfully maintain an infection in the host.
