The Apollo 14 and 16 missions returned several samples commonly interpreted as crystalline impact melt, with ages of approximately 3800–3850 Ma. Previous work has suggested that these rocks formed in one or more pre-Imbrium basin forming impact(s). By contrast, recent ages determined for a range of lunar breccias provide compelling evidence that the Imbrium basin was formed at approximately 3920 Ma. Using an approach previously demonstrated in lunar basalts, Pb–Pb isochron ages are determined for two of these proposed impact melt samples (14078: 3848 ± 4 Ma; and 68415: 3834 ± 11 Ma). In the case of 14078, the least radiogenic Pb isotopic compositions measured here are interpreted as representing the initial Pb isotopic composition of the sample. This value indicates derivation from a source (or sources) with high 238U/204Pb ratios (approx. 2400), similar to those predicted for the Apollo 14 high-Al and very high-K basalts. It was not possible to determine an equivalent initial Pb isotopic composition for 68415, but Pb isotope evolution models indicate that the sample would have been derived from lithologies with lower 238U/204Pb source ratios (approx. 1000). In both cases, the samples are interpreted as having been formed by impacts local to the Apollo 14 and Apollo 16 landing sites.

Lunar impact basins formed during the magma ocean solidification should have formed almost unidentifiable topographic and crustal thickness signatures, thus may escape detection. This result allows for a higher impact flux in the earliest epoch of Earth-Moon evolution.

Northwest Africa (NWA) 12384 is a lunar polymict breccia composed almost entirely of basaltic components. The clast content includes low‐ to very‐low‐Ti volcanic picritic glass, basaltic vitrophyre, and crystalline pigeonite basalt—an assemblage of volcanic materials that can be tested for petrogenetic relationships. We present the inferred history of select mare components of NWA 12384 as suggested by texture, mineralogy, and petrography, and compare them to Apollo samples and other lunar meteorites. In addition, we used the volcanic glasses in the breccia as a primary composition for crystallization modeling and comparison to the lithic clast compositions. We find that the mafic clasts in NWA 12384 cannot be derived from the picritic glass through a common liquid line of descent because of higher Ti content, though they may have crystallized from a separate, common liquid line of descent. These clasts could represent local source‐region heterogeneity or differential assimilation of more Ti‐rich material. Pb‐Pb SIMS analyses of a large basalt clast in NWA 12384 reveal an age of 3044 ± 41 Ma (2σ), which is used together with the chemical data and 4π cosmic ray exposure age of less than 20 kyr and terrestrial age of between 3.1 and 17.3 kyr to constrain the possible locations of provenance for this meteorite. Apollo 16 soil-like regolith breccia 65745,7 contains two zircon-bearing clasts. One of these clasts is a thermally annealed silica-rich rock, which mineralogically has affinities with the High Alkali Suite (Clast 1), and yields zircon dates ranging from 4.08 to 3.38 Ga. The other clast is a KREEP-rich impact melt breccia (Clast 2) and yields zircon dates ranging from 3.97 to 3.91 Ga. The crystalline cores of both grains, which yield dates of ca 3.9 Ga, have undergone shock pressure modification at less than 20 GPa. We interpret that the U-Pb chronometer in these zircon grains has been partially reset by the Imbrium basin-forming event when the clasts were incorporated into the Cayley Plains ejecta blanket deposit. The zircon grains in Clast 1 have been partially decomposed, resulting in a breakdown polymineralic texture, with elevated U, Pb and Th abundances compared with those in the crystalline zircon. These decomposed areas exhibit younger dates around 3.4 Ga, suggesting a secondary high-pressure, high-temperature event, probably caused by an impact in the local Apollo 16 highlands area.

The results of a laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U–Pb dating and a Hf isotope study of zircon crystals separated from small eclogite xenoliths found in Devonian kimberlites within the Prypyat horst, Ukraine, have been reported. The studied area is located in the junction zone between the Sarmatian and Fennoscandian segments of the East European Platform. Four laser ablation sites on two zircon grains yielded Paleoproterozoic U–Pb ages between 1954 ± 24 and 1735 ± 54 Ma. In contrast, three of four Hf sites revealed negative εHf values and Paleoarchean to Mesoarchean model ages, excluding the possibility that the eclogite xenoliths represented segments of a juvenile Paleoproterozoic subducted slab or younger mafic melts crystallized in the subcontinental lithospheric mantle. A single laser ablation Hf spot yielded a positive εHf value (+3) and a Paleoproterozoic model age. Two models for eclogite origin can be proposed. The first foresees the extension of the Archean lower-crustal or lithospheric roots beneath the Sarmatia–Fennoscandia junction zone for over 200 km from the nearest known outcrop of Archean rocks in the Ukrainian Shield. The second model is that the Central Belarus Suture Zone represents a rifted-out fragment of the Kola–Karelian craton that was accreted to Sarmatia before the actual collision of these two segments of Baltica.
