1. Enhanced Nutrition Programs to Rehabilitate Freeze-stressed Citrus Trees in Subtropical Regions.

Abstract

Citrus spp. trees are not fully dormant during the winter months in the northern hemisphere; therefore, they are susceptible to sporadic freeze events of various magnitudes that could decline tree productivity or be lethal. In Feb 2021, winter storm Uri produced freezing air temperatures for nearly 72 hours, which created several degrees of injuries to citrus orchards in southern Texas. Producers in the area implemented combinations of multiple horticultural practices aimed at remediating injuries from the cold spell to stimulate root and tree recovery. However, there is a gap in our understanding of how practices such as compost application (CA) combined with varying rates of nitrogen (N) might facilitate tree recovery. Therefore, we conducted a 2-year field experiment using two CAs as soil amendments in combination with three N rates (112, 168, and 224 kg·ha21 N) to evaluate fruit yield and internal quality, root growth, and recovery of 'Rio Red' grapefruits (Citrus ×paradisi Macf.) and 'Marrs' sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis). The yields of both crops exhibited modest improvement with CA in 2022; however, it was nonsignificant. Moreover, CA elicited more beneficial effects than N rates alone when rehabilitating trees and improving fruit internal quality after freezing events. Grapefruit brix was 4% higher in fruits harvested from trees treated with compost, and grapefruit roots exhibited a twofold dry weight increment with CA. Sweet oranges from trees in the CA treatment had 22% lower acidity compared with that of untreated trees. Overall, our results indicate that citrus producers in southern Texas and other subtropical citrus-producing regions might facilitate the rehabilitation of tree injuries attributed to mild to moderate freeze events with moderate financial gains with the timely application of compost, which enhanced tree fitness and ameliorated fruit productivity declines during subsequent harvests. 5. IMMUNOSUPPRESSIVE ACTIVITY OF L-ASPARAGINASE IN MICE

Abstract

The administration of L-asparaginase causes regression of certain lymphoid tumours in rodents, suggesting that the enzyme may inhibit the activity of normal lymphoid cells and thus have an immunosuppressive effect. The effect of L-asparaginase treatment in mice on the survival of skin allografts and on the antibody response to i.p. injected sheep red blood cells was studied. In both experimental situations, the degree of response to the antigenie challenge was reduced. A single dose of asparaginase was effective when given at the same time as the sheep red blood cells and up to 48 hr afterward. The enzyme was unable to diminish the response to a second injection of sheep red blood cells in previously stimulated mice.

Abstract

Contamination of groundwater by pesticide percolation is of great concern. Field observations have revealed that some pesticides move deeper into the soil profile than would be expected from predictions made by solute transport models. The discrepancies have been attributed to preferential flow of water carrying pesticides via macropores in field soils. The same phenomenon may also be explained by transport facilitated by a carrier such as dissolved organic matter (DOM). A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the transport of napropamide [2-(a-naphthoxy-N,N-diethylpropionamide] through soil via DOM. Soils were sieved, packed in columns, and treated at the surface with [sup.14]C-labeled napropamide. Water was applied to the columns by flooding and leachate was collected. It was found that [sup.14]C-labeled napropamide was present in the first 0.22 cm of leachate. The [sup.14]C and DOM concentrations were highest in the initial leachate and decreased with increasing leachate. Napropamide concentration fell below detection at some depth in all columns and recovery in the soil averaged 95% of the applied napropamide. Gas chromatographic analyses verified that [sup.14]C activity in the leachate was associated with napropamide. A dialysis equilibrium technique determined that 17 to 56% of the napropamide in the leachate was retained inside a 500-Da dialysis membrane. The rapid leaching of a small fraction of napropamide was not a result of preferential flow in our experiments but is due to DOM-facilitated transport. Thus, under field conditions rapid pesticide leaching could be the combined effects of preferential flow and facilitated transport.

Abstract

Methyl bromide (MB) is a broad-spectrum soil fumigant, which has been critical in strawberry production for forty years. Strawberry and other high-value cash crops benefit from pre-plant soil fumigation with MB and chloropicrin (Pic). Mixtures of these two fumigants work synergistically in controlling a wide range of plant pathogens and pests, including fungi, nematodes, insects, mites, rodents, weeds, and some bacteria. Methyl bromide was listed in 1993 by the Parties of the Montreal Protocol as an ozone-depleting compound. According to the Montreal Protocol, the import and manufacture of MB in the United States of America (USA) and other developed countries will be banned by 2005, after stepwise reductions in 1999, 2001, and 2003. Currently, there is no single registered alternative fumigant for all of the MB uses and there is a need for environmentally sound and economically feasible alternatives. The fumigants 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) and Pic in combination with methyl isothiocyanate (MITC) generators have shown to be the most promising alternatives to methyl bromide for strawberry production. Studies with the experimental fumigants methyl iodide and propargyl bromide suggested that these compounds have higher reactivity than MB as stand-alone fumigants. This review evaluates the commercially available and experimental alternatives to MB soil fumigation for strawberry production based on relevant scientific publications, proceedings, and personal communications.

28. Efficacy of 1,3-Dichloropropene in Soil Amended with Compost and Unamended Soil

Abstract

1,3-Dichloropropene (1,3-D) is a likely alternative soil fumigant for methyl bromide. The objective was to determine root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita, survival in microplots after exposure to 1,3-D for various periods of time in soil that have previously been amended with compost. The treatments were 1,3-D applied broadcast at 112 liters/ha and untreated controls in both compost-amended and unamended soil. Soil samples were collected from each microplot at 6, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours after fumigation at three depths (0-15, 15-30, and 30-45 cm). One week after fumigation, six tomato seedlings were transplanted into each microplot and root galling was recorded 6 weeks later. Plants grown in fumigated compost-amended soil had more galls than plants from fumigated unamended soil at P/= 0.1. Gall indices from roots in fumigated soil amended with compost were not different from nonfumigated controls. Based on soil bioassays, the number of galls decreased with increasing time after fumigation in both compost-amended and unamended soil at 0-to-15 and 15-to-30 cm depths, but not at 30 to 45 cm deep. Higher soil water content due to the elevated levels of organic matter in the soil at these depths may have interfered with 1,3-D movement, thus reducing its efficacy.
