This summer workshop was held in 1967. This guide includes how to lead discussions, ask challenging questions, use feedback, observe behavior of members, make thought-provoking statements, and summarize points. Both the potential and the limitations of radio for foreign language instruction are described, as well as its relevance for students of different proficiency levels. The author's personal experiences serve as the basis for recommendation of a six-band, shortwave, quality reception table and a listing of foreign language shortwave broadcasts emanating from France, the United States, Canada, and Sweden. A case is made for the suitability of radio as an aid in the maintenance of comprehension in an academic situation. The values for the language learner of transmitting, as well as receiving, are outlined. Some reasons for the limited use of radio are also discussed. (RL)

The French department, commonly viewed by chairmen and faculty as the conveyor of culture, is admonished to revamp its curriculum and attempt to embrace a broader, more humane understanding of the nature of culture. With the traditional, belletristic, college French curriculum having been rejected in favor of programs based on "cogency, cohesion, and conscience," the author offers his views on the interrelatedness of language, literature, and civilization, deprecating the attitude that would make language and civilization courses handmaidens to the study of literature. He urges the use of electronic media, essential to the maintenance of language skills and to the development of interest in the language. Much of the paper is devoted to description of a proposed "Institut d'Etudes Francaises," and elaborates on the type of interdisciplinary programs in French currently being offered at the University of Illinois (Urbana). The separation of language study from literary study is advocated in this discussion of today's attitudes on language teaching. Observations of the slow rate of acquisition of speaking and reading skills even among better students leads to suggestions for changes in conventional allocations of time and function assigned to students and teachers as well as for the development and introduction of new reading materials. Author suggests that pupils will write more coherent and unified compositions if they are taught to look for the logical connection between parts, looking to see if two parts are joined by an and" relationship, an and then" relationship, a but" relationship, a more specifically" relationship or a therefore" relationship.
