Many of the most intriguing features, including spirals and cavities, in the current disc observations are found in binary systems like GG Tau, HD 142527 or HD 100453. Such features are evidence of the dynamic interaction between binary stars and the viscous disc. Understanding these dynamic interactions and how they result in the structure and growth of asymmetric circumbinary discs is a difficult problem, for which there is no complete analytical solution, that predicts the shape of the observed disc accurately. We use numeric simulation to evolve circumbinary discs with varying disc viscosities and investigate the size and shape of the inner cavities in such protoplanetary discs. We have simulated over 140 locally isothermal 2D grid-based disc models for > 3e4 binary orbits each and mapped out the parameter space relevant for protoplanetary discs. With this, it becomes possible to create parametrised profiles for individual discs to compare to observation and find limits to their binary eccentricity or internal viscosity from the simulation data. In the long-term simulations larger cavity sizes than previously considered are possible within the parameter space (< 6 binary separations). As an example, we find that the eccentricity of the disc around HD 142527 suggests the impact of the binary dynamics on the disc. Low-mass planets migrating inwards in laminar protoplanetary disks (PPDs) experience a dynamical corotation torque, which is expected to slow down migration to a stall. However, baroclinic effects can reduce or even reverse this effect, leading to rapid inward migration. In the radiatively inefficient inner disk, one such mechanism is the buoyancy response of the disk to an embedded planet. Recent work has suggested that radiative cooling can quench this response, but for parameters that are not necessarily representative of the inner regions of PPDs. We perform global three dimensional inviscid radiation hydrodynamics simulations of planet-disk interaction to investigate the effect of radiative cooling on the buoyancy-driven torque in a more realistic disk model. We find that the buoyancy response exerts a negative dynamical corotation torque -- albeit partially damped due to radiative cooling -- resulting in sustained, rapid inward migration. Models that adopt a local cooling prescription significantly overestimate the impact of the buoyancy response, highlighting the importance of a realistic treatment of radiation transport that includes radiative diffusion. Our results suggest that low-mass planets should migrate inwards faster than has been previously expected in radiative disks, with implications for the formation and orbital distribution of super-Earths and sub-Neptunes at intermediate distances from their host stars, unless additional physical processes that can slow down migration are considered., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures; accepted in MNRAS

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Planets orbiting binary systems are relatively unexplored compared to those around single stars. Detections of circumbinary planets and planetary systems offer a first detailed view into our understanding of circumbinary planet formation and dynamical evolution. The BEBOP (Binaries Escorted by Orbiting Planets) radial velocity survey plays a special role in this adventure as it focuses on eclipsing single-lined binaries with an FGK dwarf primary and M dwarf secondary allowing for the highest-radial velocity precision using the HARPS and SOPHIE spectrographs. We obtained 4512 high-resolution spectra for the 179 targets in the BEBOP survey which we used to derive the stellar atmospheric parameters using both equivalent widths and spectral synthesis. We furthermore derive stellar masses, radii, and ages for all targets. With this work, we present the first homogeneous catalogue of precise stellar parameters for these eclipsing single-lined binaries., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

The process of forming a circumbinary planet is thought to be intimately related to the structure of the nascent circumbinary disc. It has been shown that the structure of a circumbinary disc depends strongly on 3-dimensional effects and on the detailed modelling of the thermodynamics. Here, we employ 3-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations, combined with a proper treatment of the thermal physics using the RADMC-3D radiation transport code, to examine the location of the snow line in circumbinary discs. The models have application to the circumbinary planets that have been discovered in recent years by the Kepler and TESS transit surveys. We find that the snow line is located in a narrow region of the circumbinary disc, close to the inner cavity that is carved out by the central binary, at typical orbital distances of $\sim 1.5-2$ AU for the system parameters considered. In this region, previous work has shown that both grain growth and pebble accretion are likely to be inefficient because of the presence of hydrodynamical turbulence. Hence, in situ planet formation interior to the snow line is unlikely to occur and circumbinary planets should preferentially be icy, not rocky., Comment: Accepted in A&A

Low-mass planets migrate in the type-I regime. In the inviscid limit, the contrast between the vortensity trapped inside the planet's corotating region and the background disk vortensity leads to a dynamical corotation torque, which is thought to slow down inward migration. We investigate the effect of radiative cooling on low-mass planet migration using inviscid 2D hydrodynamical simulations. We find that cooling induces a baroclinic forcing on material U-turning near the planet, resulting in vortensity growth in the corotating region, which in turn weakens the dynamical corotation torque and leads to 2-3x faster inward migration. This mechanism is most efficient when cooling acts on a timescale similar to the U-turn time of material inside the corotating region, but is nonetheless relevant for a substantial radial range in a typical disk (5-50 au). As the planet migrates inwards, the contrast between the vortensity inside and outside the corotating region increases and partially regulates the effect of baroclinic forcing. As a secondary effect, we show that radiative damping can further weaken the vortensity barrier created by the planet's spiral shocks, supporting inward migration. Finally, we highlight that a self-consistent treatment of radiative diffusion as opposed to local cooling is critical in order to avoid overestimating the vortensity growth and the resulting migration rate., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures; accepted to MNRAS

Previous work has shown that interactions between a central binary system and a circumbinary disc (CBD) can lead to the binary orbit either shrinking or expanding, depending on the properties of the disc. In this work, we perform two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of CBDs surrounding equal mass binary systems that are on fixed circular orbits, using the Athena++ code in Cartesian coordinates. Previous studies have focused on discs where viscosity drives angular momentum transport. The aim of this work is to examine how the evolution of a binary system changes when angular momentum is extracted from the disc by a magnetised wind. In this proof-of-concept study, we mimic the effects of a magnetic field by applying an external torque that results in a prescribed radial mass flux through the disc. For three different values of the radial mass flux, we compare how the binary system evolves when the disc is either viscous or wind-driven. In all cases considered, our simulations predict that the binary orbit should shrink faster by a factor of a few when surrounded by a wind-driven circumbinary disc compared to a corresponding viscous circumbinary disc. In-spiral timescales of $\sim 10^6$-$10^7$yr are obtained for circular binaries surrounded by CBDs with masses typical of protoplanetary discs, indicating that significant orbital shrinkage can occur through binary-disc interactions during Class I/II pre-main sequence phases.

The recent discovery of multiple planets in the circumbinary system TOI-1338/BEBOP-1 raises questions about how such a system formed. The formation of the system was briefly explored in the discovery paper, but only to answer the question do current pebble accretion models have the potential to explain the origin of the system? We use a global model of circumbinary planet formation that utilises N-body simulations, including prescriptions for planet migration, gas and pebble accretion, and interactions with a circumbinary disc, to explore the disc parameters that could have led to the formation of the TOI-1338/BEBOP-1 system. With the disc lifetime being the main factor in determining how planets form, we limit our parameter space to those that determine the disc lifetime. These are: the strength of turbulence in the disc, the initial disc mass, and the strength of the external radiation field that launches photoevaporative winds. When comparing the simulated systems to TOI-1338/BEBOP-1, we find that only discs with low levels of turbulence are able to produce similar systems. The radiation environment has a large effect on the types of planetary systems that form, whilst the initial disc mass only has limited impact since the majority of planetary growth occurs early in the disc lifetime. With the most TOI-1338/BEBOP-1 like systems all occupying similar regions of parameter space, our study shows that observed circumbinary planetary systems can potentially constrain the properties of planet forming discs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 15 pages, 10 figures

In radiatively inefficient, laminar protoplanetary disks, embedded planets can excite a buoyancy response as gas gets deflected vertically near the planet. This results in vertical oscillations that drive a vortensity growth in the planet's corotating region, speeding up inward migration in the type-I regime. We present a comparison between PLUTO/IDEFIX and FARGO3D using 3D, inviscid, adiabatic numerical simulations of planet-disk interaction that feature the buoyancy response of the disk, and show that PLUTO/IDEFIX struggle to resolve higher-order modes of the buoyancy-related oscillations, weakening vortensity growth and the associated torque. We interpret this as a drawback of total-energy-conserving, finite-volume schemes. Hydrodynamical simulations solve the governing equations on a discrete grid of space and time. This discretization causes numerical diffusion similar to a physical viscous diffusion, whose magnitude is often unknown or poorly constrained. With the current trend of simulating accretion disks with no or very low prescribed physical viscosity, it becomes essential to understand and quantify this inherent numerical diffusion, in the form of a numerical viscosity. We study the behavior of the viscous spreading ring and the spiral instability that develops in it. We then use this setup to quantify the numerical viscosity in Cartesian grids and study its properties. We simulate the viscous spreading ring and the related instability on a two-dimensional polar grid using PLUTO as well as FARGO, and ensure convergence of our results with a resolution study. We then repeat our models on a Cartesian grid and measure the numerical viscosity by comparing results to the known analytical solution, using PLUTO and Athena++. We find that the numerical viscosity in a Cartesian grid scales with resolution as approximately $\nu_{num}\propto\Delta x^2$ and is equivalent to an effective $\alpha\sim10^{-4}$ for a common numerical setup. We also show that the spiral instability manifests as a single leading spiral throughout the whole domain on polar grids. This is contrary to previous results and indicates that sufficient resolution is necessary in order to correctly resolve the instability. Our results are relevant in the context of models where the origin should be included in the computational domain, or when polar grids cannot be used. Examples of such cases include models of disk accretion onto a central binary and inherently Cartesian codes.

ALMA observations of protoplanetary disks in dust continuum emission reveal a variety of annular structures. Attributing the existence of such features to embedded planets is a popular scenario, supported by studies using hydrodynamical models. Recent work has shown that radiative cooling greatly influences the capability of planet-driven spiral density waves to transport angular momentum, ultimately deciding the number, position, and depth of rings and gaps that a planet can carve in a disk. However, radiation transport has only been treated via local thermal relaxation, not taking into account radiative diffusion along the disk plane. We compare the previous state-of-the-art models of planet-disk interaction with local cooling prescriptions to our new models that include cooling in the vertical direction and radiative diffusion in the plane of the disk, and show that the response of the disk to the induced spiral waves can differ significantly when comparing these two treatments of the disk thermodynamics. We follow up with synthetic emission maps of ALMA systems, and show that our new models reproduce the observations found in the literature better than models with local cooling. Numerous circumbinary planets have been discovered in surveys of transiting planets. Often, these planets are found to orbit near to the zone of dynamical instability, close to the central binary. The existence of these planets has been explained by hydrodynamical simulations that show that migrating circumbinary planets, embedded in circumbinary discs, halt at the central cavity that is formed by the central binary. Transit surveys are naturally most sensitive to finding circumbinary planets with the shortest orbital periods. The future promise of detecting longer period systems using radial-velocity searches, combined with the anticipated detection of numerous circumbinary planets by ESA's PLATO mission, points to the need to model and understand the formation and evolution of circumbinary planets in a more general sense than has been considered before. With this goal in mind, we present a newly developed global model of circumbinary planet formation that is based on the mercury6 symplectic N-body integrator, combined with a model for the circumbinary disc and prescriptions for a range of processes involved in planet formation such as pebble accretion, gas envelope accretion and migration. Our results show that under reasonable assumptions, the pebble accretion scenario can produce circumbinary systems that are similar to those observed, and in particular is able to produce planets akin to Kepler-16b and Kepler-34b. Comparing our results to other systems, we find that our models also adequately reproduce such systems, including multi-planet systems. We report the detection of a gas-giant planet in orbit around both stars of an eclipsing binary star system that also contains the smaller, inner transiting planet TOI-1338b. The new planet, called TOI-1338/BEBOP-1c, was discovered using radial-velocity data collected with the HARPS and ESPRESSO spectrographs. Our analysis reveals it is a $65.2~\rm{M_{\oplus}}$ circumbinary planet with a period of $215.5~$days. This is the first detection of a circumbinary planet using radial-velocity observations alone, and makes TOI-1338/BEBOP-1 only the second confirmed multiplanet circumbinary system to date. We do not detect the smaller inner transiting planet with radial-velocity data, and can place an upper limit on the inner planet's mass at $21.8~\mathrm{M}_\oplus$ with $99\%$ confidence. The vertical shear instability (VSI) is a source of hydrodynamic turbulence that can drive vigorous vertical mixing and moderate levels of accretion in protoplanetary disks, and it could be observable in the near future. With high-resolution three-dimensional numerical hydrodynamics simulations, we modeled the behavior of the VSI in protoplanetary disks with and without embedded planets. We then measured its accretion and mixing capabilities by comparing the full Reynolds stress, which includes the contribution of nonaxisymmetric features, such as spiral arms and vortices, to the Reynolds stress due to the azimuthally averaged velocity field, which can be attributed to good approximation to the VSI. We verified that the VSI can contribute to the accretion stress and showed that, depending on disk conditions, an embedded planet can coexist with or suppress VSI turbulent stress. Specifically, the presence of spiral shocks launched by a planet or planet-generated vortices can interfere with the VSI near the planet's vicinity, with the instability recovering at large enough distances from the planet or vortex. The evolution of circumbinary discs and planets is often studied using two-dimensional (2D) numerical simulations, although recent work suggests that 3D effects may significantly alter the structure of the inner cavity created by the binary. In this study, we present the results of 3D hydrodynamical simulations of circumbinary discs that orbit around analogues of the Kepler-16 and Kepler-34 systems, including the effect of stellar heating and radiative cooling on the thermal disc structure. We find that compared to their 2D counterparts, the structures of the cavities in 3D circumbinary disc models appear to reach a quasi-stationary state more rapidly, and in a subset of our runs the evidence for this is unambiguous. Furthermore, the sizes and eccentricities of the inner cavity are smaller in 3D compared to 2D. We attribute this difference to enhanced spiral wave dissipation in disc regions above the midplane, where the cooling time is of the order of the dynamical timescale, resulting in smaller inner cavity sizes in 3D disc models. Our results suggest that migrating planets should park closer to the central binary in 3D models of circumbinary discs, and point to the importance of including the 3D structure when simulating circumbinary discs and planets., Comment: Accepted in A&A

Circumbinary disc observations and simulations show large, eccentric inner cavities. Recent work has shown that the shape and size of these cavities depend on the aspect ratio and viscosity of the disc, as well as the binary eccentricity and mass ratio. It has been further shown that, for gaps created by planets, the cooling timescale significantly affects the shape and size of the gap. In this study, we consider the effect of different cooling models on the cavity shape in a circumbinary disc. We compare locally isothermal and radiatively cooled disc models to ones with a parametrised cooling timescale ($\beta$-cooling), implemented in 2D numerical simulations for varying binary eccentricities. While the shape of the cavity for radiative and locally isothermal models remains comparable, the inner disc structure changes slightly, leading to a change in the precession rate of the disc. With $\beta$-cooled models, the shape and size of the cavity changes dramatically towards values of $\beta$=1. Based on our findings, we introduce a parametrised $\beta$ model that accounts for the shorter cooling timescale inside the cavity while adequately reproducing the results of the radiative model, and we highlight that accurate treatment of the thermodynamics inside the cavity has a significant impact in modelling circumbinary systems., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in A&A

We present the results of two-fluid hydrodynamical simulations of circumbinary discs consisting of gas and dust, with and without embedded planets, to examine the influence of the dust on the structure of the tidally truncated inner cavity and on the parking locations of migrating planets. In this proof-of-concept study, we consider Kepler-16 and -34 analogues, and examine dust fluids with Stokes numbers in the range $10^{-4} \le St \le 10^{-1}$ and dust-to-gas ratios of 0.01 and 1. For the canonical dust-to-gas ratio of 0.01, we find the inclusion of the dust has only a minor effect on the cavity and stopping locations of embedded planets compared to dust-free simulations. However, for the enhanced dust-to-gas ratio of unity, assumed to arise because of significant dust drift and accumulation, we find that the dust can have a dramatic effect by shrinking and circularising the inner cavity, which brings the parking locations of planets closer to the central binary. This work demonstrates the importance of considering both gas and dust in studies of circumbinary discs and planets, and provides a potential means of explaining the orbital properties of circumbinary planets such as Kepler-34b, which have hitherto been difficult to explain using gas-only hydrodynamical simulations., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 20 pages, 17 figures

The radial velocity method is amongst the most robust and most established means of detecting exoplanets. Yet, it has so far failed to detect circumbinary planets despite their relatively high occurrence rates. Here, we report velocimetric measurements of Kepler-16A, obtained with the SOPHIE spectrograph, at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence's 193cm telescope, collected during the BEBOP survey for circumbinary planets. Our measurements mark the first radial velocity detection of a circumbinary planet, independently determining the mass of Kepler-16~(AB)~b to be $0.313 \pm 0.039\,{\rm M}_{\rm Jup}$, a value in agreement with eclipse timing variations. Our observations demonstrate the capability to achieve photon-noise precision and accuracy on single-lined binaries, with our final precision reaching $\rm 1.5~m\,s^{-1}$ on the binary and planetary signals. Our analysis paves the way for more circumbinary planet detections using radial velocities which will increase the relatively small sample of currently known systems to statistically relevant numbers, using a method that also provides weaker detection biases. The inner-most regions of circumbinary discs are unstable to a parametric instability whose non-linear evolution is hydrodynamical turbulence. This results in significant particle stirring, impacting on planetary growth processes such as the streaming instability or pebble accretion. In this paper, we present the results of three-dimensional, inviscid global hydrodynamical simulations of circumbinary discs with embedded particles of 1 cm size. Hydrodynamical turbulence develops in the disc, and we examine the effect of the particle back-reaction on vertical dust. We find that higher solid-to-gas ratios lead to smaller gas vertical velocity fluctuations, and therefore to smaller dust scale heights. For a metallicity $Z=0.1$, the dust scale height near the edge of the tidally-truncated cavity is $\sim 80\%$ of the gas scale height, such that growing a Ceres-mass object to a 10 $M_\oplus$ core via pebble accretion would take longer than the disc lifetime. Collision velocities for small particles are also higher than the critical velocity for fragmentation, which precludes grain growth and the possibility of forming a massive planetesimal seed for pebble accretion. At larger distances from the binary, turbulence is weak enough to enable not only efficient pebble accretion but also grain growth to sizes required to trigger the streaming instability. In these regions, an in-situ formation scenario of circumbinary planets involving the streaming instability to form a massive planetesimal followed by pebble accretion onto this core is viable. In that case, planetary migration has to be invoked to explain the presence of circumbinary planets at their observed locations., Comment: accepted in MNRAS

We present the discovery of NGTS-19b, a high mass transiting brown dwarf discovered by the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). We investigate the system using follow up photometry from the South African Astronomical Observatory, as well as sector 11 TESS data, in combination with radial velocity measurements from the CORALIE spectrograph to precisely characterise the system. We find that NGTS-19b is a brown dwarf companion to a K-star, with a mass of $69.5 ^{+5.7}_{-5.4}$ M$_{Jup}$ and radius of $1.034 ^{+0.055}_{-0.053}$ R$_{Jup}$. The system has a reasonably long period of 17.84 days, and a high degree of eccentricity of $0.3767 ^{+0.0061}_{-0.0061}$. The mass and radius of the brown dwarf imply an age of $0.46 ^{+0.26}_{-0.15}$ Gyr, however this is inconsistent with the age determined from the host star SED, suggesting that the brown dwarf may be inflated. This is unusual given that its large mass and relatively low levels of irradiation would make it much harder to inflate. NGTS-19b adds to the small, but growing number of brown dwarfs transiting main sequence stars, and is a valuable addition as we begin to populate the so called brown dwarf desert., Comment: Accepted for Publication in MNRAS

Observations have confirmed the existence of multiple-planet systems containing a hot Jupiter and smaller planetary companions. Examples include WASP-47, Kepler-730, and TOI-1130. We examine the plausibility of forming such systems in situ using $N$-body simulations that include a realistic treatment of collisions, an evolving protoplanetary disc and eccentricity/inclination damping of planetary embryos. Initial conditions are constructed using two different models for the core of the giant planet: a 'seed-model' and an 'equal-mass-model'. The former has a more massive protoplanet placed among multiple small embryos in a compact configuration. The latter consists only of equal-mass embryos. Simulations of the seed-model lead to the formation of systems containing a hot Jupiter and super-Earths. The evolution consistently follows four distinct phases: early giant impacts; runaway gas accretion onto the seed protoplanet; disc damping-dominated evolution of the embryos orbiting exterior to the giant; a late chaotic phase after dispersal of the gas disc. Approximately 1% of the equal-mass simulations form a giant and follow the same four-phase evolution. Synthetic transit observations of the equal-mass simulations provide an occurrence rate of 0.26% for systems containing a hot Jupiter and an inner super-Earth, similar to the 0.2% occurrence rate from actual transit surveys, but simulated hot Jupiters are rarely detected as single transiting planets, in disagreement with observations. A subset of our simulations form two close-in giants, similar to the WASP-148 system. The scenario explored here provides a viable pathway for forming systems with unusual architectures, but does not apply to the majority of hot Jupiters., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Approximately half of the planets discovered by NASA's Kepler mission are in systems where just a single planet transits its host star, and the remaining planets are observed to be in multi-planet systems. Recent analyses have reported a dichotomy in the eccentricity distribution displayed by systems where a single planet transits compared with that displayed by the multi-planet systems. Using $N$-body simulations, we examine the hypothesis that this dichotomy has arisen because inner systems of super-Earths are frequently accompanied by outer systems of giant planets that can become dynamically unstable and perturb the inner systems. Our initial conditions are constructed using a subset of the known Kepler five-planet systems as templates for the inner systems, and systems of outer giant planets with masses between those of Neptune and Saturn that are centred on orbital radii $2 \le a_{\rm p} \le 10$ au. The parameters of the outer systems are chosen so that they are always below an assumed radial velocity detection threshold of 3 ms$^{-1}$. The results show an inverse relation between the mean eccentricities and the multiplicites of the systems. Performing synthetic transit observation of the final systems reveals dichotomies in both the eccentricity and multiplicity distributions that are close to being in agreement with the Kepler data. Eccentric gaseous discs are unstable to a parametric instability involving the resonant interaction between inertial-gravity waves and the eccentric mode in the disc. We present 3D global hydrodynamical simulations of inviscid circumbinary discs that form an inner cavity and become eccentric through interaction with the central binary. The parametric instability grows and generates turbulence that transports angular momentum with stress parameter $\alpha \sim 5 \times 10^{-3}$ at distances $\lesssim 7 \;a_{bin} $, where $a_{bin}$ is the binary semi-major axis. Vertical turbulent diffusion occurs at a rate corresponding to $\alpha_{diff}\sim 1-2\times 10^{-3}$. We examine the impact of turbulent diffusion on the vertical settling of pebbles, and on the rate of pebble accretion by embedded planets. In steady state, dust particles with Stokes numbers ${\it St} \lesssim 0.1$ form a layer of finite thickness $H_d \gtrsim 0.1 H$, where $H$ is the gas scale height. Pebble accretion efficiency is then reduced by a factor $r_{acc}/H_d$, where $r_{acc}$ is the accretion radius, compared to the rate in a laminar disc. For accreting core masses with $m_p \lesssim 0.1\; M_\oplus$, pebble accretion for particles with ${\it St} \gtrsim 0.5$ is also reduced because of velocity kicks induced by the turbulence. These effects combine to make the time needed by a Ceres-mass object to grow to the pebble isolation mass, when significant gas accretion can occur, longer than typical disc lifetimes. Hence, the origins of circumbinary planets orbiting close to their central binary systems, as discovered by the Kepler mission, are difficult to explain using an in situ model that invokes a combination of the streaming instability and pebble accretion., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS

Theoretical models of the ionization state in protoplanetary disks suggest the existence of large areas with low ionization and weak coupling between the gas and magnetic fields. In this regime hydrodynamical instabilities may become important. In this work we investigate the gas and dust structure and dynamics for a typical T Tauri system under the influence of the vertical shear instability (VSI). We use global 3D radiation hydrodynamics simulations covering all $360^\circ$ of azimuth with embedded particles of 0.1 and 1mm size, evolved for 400 orbits. Stellar irradiation heating is included with opacities for 0.1- to 10-$\mu$m-sized dust. Saturated VSI turbulence produces a stress-to-pressure ratio of $\alpha \simeq 10^{-4}$. The value of $\alpha$ is lowest within 30~au of the star, where thermal relaxation is slower relative to the orbital period and approaches the rate below which VSI is cut off. The rise in $\alpha$ from 20 to 30~au causes a dip in the surface density near 35~au, leading to Rossby wave instability and the generation of a stationary, long-lived vortex spanning about 4~au in radius and 40~au in azimuth. Our results confirm previous findings that mm size grains are strongly vertically mixed by the VSI. The scale height aspect ratio for 1mm grains is determined to be 0.037, much higher than the value $H/r=0.007$ obtained from millimeter-wave observations of the HL~Tau system. The measured aspect ratio is better fit by non-ideal MHD models. In our VSI turbulence model, the mm grains drift radially inwards and many are trapped and concentrated inside the vortex. The turbulence induces a velocity dispersion of $\sim 12$~m/s for the mm grains, indicating that grain-grain collisions could lead to fragmentation., Comment: ApJ accepted

Outflows driven by large-scale magnetic fields likely play an important role in the evolution and dispersal of protoplanetary disks, and in setting the conditions for planet formation. We extend our 2-D axisymmetric non-ideal MHD model of these outflows by incorporating radiative transfer and simplified thermochemistry, with the twin aims of exploring how heating influences wind launching, and illustrating how such models can be tested through observations of diagnostic spectral lines. Our model disks launch magnetocentrifugal outflows primarily through magnetic tension forces, so the mass-loss rate increases only moderately when thermochemical effects are switched on. For typical field strengths, thermochemical and irradiation heating are more important than magnetic dissipation. We furthermore find that the entrained vertical magnetic flux diffuses out of the disk on secular timescales as a result of non-ideal MHD. Through post-processing line radiative transfer, we demonstrate that spectral line intensities and moment-1 maps of atomic oxygen, the HCN molecule, and other species show potentially observable differences between a model with a magnetically driven outflow and one with a weaker, photoevaporative outflow. We present simulations of low-mass planet--disc interactions in inviscid three-dimensional discs. We show that a wind-driven laminar accretion flow through the surface layers of the disc does not significantly modify the migration torque experienced by embedded planets. More importantly, we find that 3D effects lead to a dramatic change in the behaviour of the dynamical corotation torque compared to earlier 2D theory and simulations. Although it was previously shown that the dynamical corotation torque could act to slow and essentially stall the inward migration of a low-mass planet, our results in 3D show that the dynamical corotation torque has the complete opposite effect and speeds up inward migration. Our numerical experiments implicate buoyancy resonances as the cause. These have two effects: (i) they exert a direct torque on the planet, whose magnitude relative to the Lindblad torque is measured in our simulations to be small; (ii) they torque the gas librating on horseshoe orbits in the corotation region and drive evolution of its vortensity, leading to the negative dynamical corotation torque. This indicates that at low turbulent viscosity, the detailed vertical thermal structure of the protoplanetary disc plays an important role in determining the migration behaviour of embedded planets. NASA's Kepler mission discovered $\sim700$ planets in multi-planet systems containing 3 or more transiting bodies, many of which are super-Earths and mini-Neptunes in compact configurations. Using $N$-body simulations, we examine the in situ, final stage assembly of multi-planet systems via the collisional accretion of protoplanets. Our initial conditions are constructed using a subset of the Kepler 5-planet systems as templates. Two different prescriptions for treating planetary collisions are adopted. The simulations address numerous questions: do the results depend on the accretion prescription?; do the resulting systems resemble the Kepler systems, and do they reproduce the observed distribution of planetary multiplicities when synthetically observed?; do collisions lead to significant modification of protoplanet compositions, or to stripping of gaseous envelopes?; do the eccentricity distributions agree with those inferred for the Kepler planets? We find the accretion prescription is unimportant in determining the outcomes. The final planetary systems look broadly similar to the Kepler templates adopted, but the observed distributions of planetary multiplicities or eccentricities are not reproduced, because scattering does not excite the systems sufficiently. In addition, we find that $\sim 1$% of our final systems contain a co-orbital planet pair in horseshoe or tadpole orbits. Post-processing the collision outcomes suggests they would not significantly change the ice fractions of initially ice-rich protoplanets, but significant stripping of gaseous envelopes appears likely. Hence, it may be difficult to reconcile the observation that many low mass Kepler planets have H/He envelopes with an in situ formation scenario that involves giant impacts after dispersal of the gas disc., Comment: 29 pages, 32 figures

The increasing number of newly detected exoplanets at short orbital periods raises questions about their formation and migration histories. A particular puzzle that requires explanation arises from one of the key results of the Kepler mission, namely the increase in the planetary occurrence rate with orbital period up to 10 days for F, G, K and M stars. We investigate the conditions for planet formation and migration near the dust sublimation front in protostellar disks around young Sun-like stars. For this analysis we use iterative 2D radiation hydrostatic disk models which include irradiation by the star, and dust sublimation and deposition depending on the local temperature and vapor pressure. We perform a parameter study by varying the magnetized turbulence onset temperature, the accretion stress, the dust mass fraction, and the mass accretion rate. Our models feature a gas-only inner disk, a silicate sublimation front and dust rim starting at around 0.08 au, an ionization transition zone with a corresponding density jump, and a pressure maximum which acts as a pebble trap at around 0.12 au. Migration torque maps show Earth- and super-Earth-mass planets halt in our model disks at orbital periods ranging from 10 to 22 days. Such periods are in good agreement with both the inferred location of the innermost planets in multiplanetary systems, and the break in planet occurrence rates from the Kepler sample at 10 days. In particular, models with small grains depleted produce a trap located at a 10-day orbital period, while models with a higher abundance of small grains present a trap at around a 17-day orbital period. The snow line lies at 1.6 au, near where the occurrence rate of the giant planets peaks. Convergent migration involving multiple planets embedded in a viscous protoplanetary disc is expected to produce a chain of planets in mean motion resonances, but the multiplanet systems observed by the Kepler spacecraft are generally not in resonance. We demonstrate that under equivalent conditions, where in a viscous disc convergent migration will form a long-term stable system of planets in a chain of mean motion resonances, migration in an inviscid disc often produces a system which is highly dynamically unstable. In particular, if planets are massive enough to significantly perturb the disc surface density and drive vortex formation, the smooth capture of planets into mean motion resonances is disrupted. As planets pile up in close orbits, not protected by resonances, close encounters increase the probability of planet-planet collisions, even while the gas disc is still present. While inviscid discs often produce unstable non-resonant systems, stable, closely packed, non-resonant systems can also be formed. Gas-giant planets, like Jupiter and Saturn, acquire massive gaseous envelopes during the approximately 3 Myr-long lifetimes of protoplanetary discs. In the core accretion scenario, the formation of a solid core of around 10 Earth masses triggers a phase of rapid gas accretion. Previous 3D grid-based hydrodynamical simulations found runaway gas accretion rates corresponding to approximately 10 to 100 Jupiter masses per Myr. Such high accretion rates would result in all planets with larger-than-10-Earth-mass cores forming Jupiter-like planets, in clear contrast to the ice giants in the Solar System and the observed exoplanet population. In this work, we use 3D hydrodynamical simulations, that include radiative transfer, to model the growth of the envelope on planets with different masses. We find that gas flows rapidly through the outer part of the envelope, but this flow does not drive accretion. Instead, gas accretion is the result of quasi-static contraction of the inner envelope, which can be orders of magnitude smaller than the mass flow through the outer atmosphere. For planets smaller than Saturn, we measure moderate gas accretion rates that are below 1 Jupiter mass per Myr. Higher mass planets, however, accrete up to 10 times faster and do not reveal a self-driven mechanism that can halt gas accretion. Therefore, the reason for the final masses of Saturn and Jupiter remains difficult to understand, unless their completion coincided with the dissipation of the Solar Nebula., Comment: Accepted by A&A

We present the highest resolution study to date of super-Earths migrating in inviscid and low-viscosity discs, motivated by the connection to laminar, wind-driven models of protoplanetary discs. Our models unveil the critical role of vortices in determining the migration behaviour for partial gap-opening planets. Vortices form in pressure maxima at gap edges, and prevent the disc-feedback stopping of migration for intermediate planets in low-viscosity and inviscid discs, contrary to the concept of the `inertial limit' or `disc feedback' halting predicted from analytical models. Vortices may also form in the corotation region, and can dramatically modify migration behaviour through direct gravitational interaction with the planet. These features become apparent at high resolution, and for all but the highest viscosities there exist significant difficulties in obtaining numerically converged results. The migration of partial gap-opening planets, however, clearly becomes chaotic for sufficiently low viscosities. At moderate viscosity, a smooth disc-feedback regime is found in which migration can slow substantially, and the migration time-scale observed corresponds to migration being driven by diffusive relaxation of the gap edges. At high viscosity classical Type I migration is recovered. For Jupiter-analogue planets in inviscid discs, a wide, deep gap is formed. Transient Type II migration occurs over radial length-scales corresponding to the gap width, beyond which migration can stall. Finally, we examine the particle trapping driven by structures left in inviscid discs by a migrating planet, and find that particle traps in the form of multiple rings and vortices can persist long after the planet has passed. Recent developments in non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic simulations of protoplanetary disks suggest that instead of being traditional turbulent (viscous) accretion disks, they have a largely laminar flow with accretion driven by large-scale wind torques. These disks are possibly threaded by Hall-effect generated large-scale horizontal magnetic fields. We have examined the dynamics of the corotation region of a low mass planet embedded in such a disk and the evolution of the associated migration torque. These disks lack strong turbulence and associated turbulent diffusion, and the presence of a magnetic field and radial gas flow presents a situation outside the applicability of previous corotation torque theory. The known exoplanet population displays a great diversity of orbital architectures, and explaining the origin of this is a major challenge for planet formation theories. The gravitational interaction between young planets and their protoplanetary disks provides one way in which planetary orbits can be shaped during the formation epoch. Disk-planet interactions are strongly influenced by the structure and physical processes that drive the evolution of the protoplanetary disk. In this review we focus on how disk-planet interactions drive the migration of planets when different assumptions are made about the physics of angular momentum transport, and how it drives accretion flows in protoplanetary disk models. In particular, we consider migration in discs where: (i) accretion flows arise because turbulence diffusively transports angular momentum; (ii) laminar accretion flows are confined to thin, ionised layers near disk surfaces and are driven by the launching of magneto-centrifugal winds, with the midplane being completely inert; (iii) laminar accretion flows pervade the full column density of the disc, and are driven by a combination of large scale horizontal and vertical magnetic fields., Comment: Invited review, accepted for publication in the 'Handbook of Exoplanets', eds. We examine the migration of low mass planets in laminar protoplanetary discs, threaded by large scale magnetic fields in the dead zone that drive radial gas flows. As shown in Paper I, a dynamical corotation torque arises due to the flow-induced asymmetric distortion of the corotation region and the evolving vortensity contrast between the librating horseshoe material and background disc flow. Using simulations of laminar torqued discs containing migrating planets, we demonstrate the existence of the four distinct migration regimes predicted in Paper I. In two regimes, the migration is approximately locked to the inward or outward radial gas flow, and in the other regimes the planet undergoes outward runaway migration that eventually settles to fast steady migration. In addition, we demonstrate torque and migration reversals induced by midplane magnetic stresses, with a bifurcation dependent on the disc surface density. We develop a model for fast migration, and show why the outward runaway saturates to a steady speed, and examine phenomenologically its termination due to changing local disc conditions. We also develop an analytical model for the corotation torque at late times that includes viscosity, for application to discs that sustain modest turbulence. Although most of the circumbinary planets detected by the Kepler spacecraft are on orbits that are closely aligned with the binary orbital plane, the systems Kepler-413 and Kepler-453 exhibit small misalignments of $\sim 2.5^\circ$. One possibility is that these planets formed in a circumbinary disc whose midplane was inclined relative to the binary orbital plane. Such a configuration is expected to lead to a warped and twisted disc, and our aim is to examine the inclination evolution of planets embedded in these discs. We employed 3D hydrodynamical simulations that examine the disc response to the presence of a modestly inclined binary with parameters that match the Kepler-413 system, as a function of disc parameters and binary inclinations. The discs all develop slowly varying warps, and generally display very small amounts of twist. Very slow solid body precession occurs because a large outer disc radius is adopted. Simulations of planets embedded in these discs resulted in the planet aligning with the binary orbit plane for disc masses close to the minimum mass solar nebular, such that nodal precession of the planet was controlled by the binary. For higher disc masses, the planet maintains near coplanarity with the local disc midplane. Our results suggest that circumbinary planets born in tilted circumbinary discs should align with the binary orbit plane as the disc ages and loses mass, even if the circumbinary disc remains misaligned from the binary orbit. Planets are born in protostellar disks, which are now observed with enough resolution to address questions about internal gas flows. Candidates for driving the flows include magnetic forces, but ionization state estimates suggest much of the gas mass decouples from magnetic fields. Thus, hydrodynamical instabilities could play a major role. We investigate disk dynamics under conditions typical for a T Tauri system, using global 3D radiation hydrodynamics simulations with embedded particles and a resolution of 70 cells per scale height. Stellar irradiation heating is included with realistic dust opacities. The disk starts in joint radiative balance and hydrostatic equilibrium. The vertical shear instability (VSI) develops into turbulence that persists up to at least 1600 inner orbits (143 outer orbits). Turbulent speeds are a few percent of the local sound speed at the midplane, increasing to 20%, or 100 m/s, in the corona. These are consistent with recent upper limits on turbulent speeds from optically thin and thick molecular line observations of TW Hya and HD 163296. The predominantly vertical motions induced by the VSI efficiently lift particles upwards. Grains 0.1 and 1 mm in size achieve scale heights greater than expected in isotropic turbulence. We conclude that while kinematic constraints from molecular line emission do not directly discriminate between magnetic and nonmagnetic disk models, the small dust scale heights measured in HL Tau and HD 163296 favor turbulent magnetic models, which reach lower ratios of the vertical kinetic energy density to the accretion stress., Comment: Accepted for ApJ
