Refereed/Peer-reviewed The concept of empowerment emphasises the role of individual agency in fostering the internal growth of power, with the belief that only individuals can increase their power and achieve well-being. This research note critically examines the role of Islamic beliefs in the process of empowerment among Muslim micro-entrepreneurs in the hospitality industry. This is crucial because Islam, teaches that God is the omnipotent force that controls every aspect of human existence, which may not align with the notion of individual agency. Using data gathered from twenty-five unstructured online interviews with street food vendors in Bandung, Indonesia, this research note offers a perspective on how Islamic beliefs influence the empowerment process of Muslim street food vendors. The results show that Islamic beliefs affect street food vendors’ motivations and positive thinking, which contribute to their empowerment.

This paper aims to conceptualize the pilgrimage and tourism relationship in the contemporary world. As the boundaries between pilgrimage and tourism have become blurred, there is a need to find a more holistic way to understand the nuances of the pilgrimage-tourism relationship. This conceptual paper argues that pilgrimage offers a stage for rejuvenation in the contemporary era. In the 21st Century, the concept of pilgrimage travel has re-emerged in tourism with a new identity that goes beyond the idea of pilgrimage as a journey to a sacred place. Building on this recognition, this paper provides a conceptual framework that emphasizes the linkages between pilgrimage and contemporary tourism using three core elements: meaning, ritual, and transformation. This framework allows broader interpretations of pilgrimage travel in different phenomena of tourism in the contemporary era.

This study was undertaken to develop understandings of the self-empowerment process of a marginalised community within the hospitality industry. The majority of studies have focused on top-down empowerment programs designed by institutions or individuals with more power, aimed at power re-distribution. This is problematic because power cannot be spread; it can only be exercised within individuals. In comparison, little attention has been given to the actual empowerment process that occurs inside empowered individuals. Street food vendors were chosen as the study sample because they and their businesses are marginalised in society and the hospitality industry. This study employs the critical paradigm, which focuses on transforming the lives of marginalised communities. A qualitative research design was utilised, consisting of 25 online unstructured interviews with street food vendors in Indonesia. The interview data was analysed using thematic analysis. The results identified three themes representing the process of self-empowerment within the street food vendors (i.e. consciousness, autonomy, and agency). Additionally, while external support (tangible and/or intangible) to aid empowerment is necessary, this should not be generalised, as each individual faces unique barriers. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Refereed/Peer-reviewed Based on the understanding that every vendor is an independent agent with unique interests and values, this study explores the meaning of success and failure for street food vendors. Twenty-five online unstructured interviews with active and former street food vendors were conducted. Thematic analysis was utilised to identify various definitions of success and failure. In this modern society, capitalism has had a strong influence on how entrepreneurs view success and failure. However, this study found that the meaning of success and failure for street food vendors can be individually specific and complex. The definition of success for street food vendors includes better quality of life, business growth, and altruistic goals. In comparison, street food vendors defined failure as business failure and personal economic failure. These definitions should be seen as interrelated concepts, with vendors having multiple perceptions of success and failure.

This paper utilizes family leisure photographs to examine New Zealand society’s changing representations of fatherhood. Photographs are a useful lens for addressing such issues, as they can be interpreted as ways of understanding human life. They document sociological aspects of lives that we are unable to see easily from other sources. Over 100 years of family leisure photographs (a combination of archival family photograph albums and more recent albums sourced privately through advertising and snowball sampling) were analysed using visual qualitative thematic analysis. For analysis, a structured chronological approach was adopted to make the findings easy to follow and show the changing representations of fatherhood discourses over time. The findings show that family leisure photographs reflect a shift away from father as an invisible breadwinner in the early twentieth century, to participating in leisure consumption with the family in the post-war years, to visible and involved during the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s and 1970s, to the position of playmate-teacher in more recent decades.

The Panauti homestay project is an emerging community-based homestay initiative in Nepal. Panauti is the homeland of the indigenous Newar people, known for their rich gastronomic heritage. However, the ethnic food heritage of the Newars is rapidly changing. This article examines the impact of community-based homestay tourism on the indigenous Newar community in Panauti through the lens of the local gastronomic heritage. Semistructured interviews and participant observations were used as qualitative methods during first authors' 3-month stay in the homestay destination. The findings identify and discuss the significant influence of homestay tourism on the food culture of the host families. The bottom-up tourism approach characteristic of community homestays has helped to sustain many elements of the traditional ethnic gastronomy in Panauti's rapidly changing food culture. Alongside this, tourism has helped to adapt the indigenous culinary heritage to influences from other food cultures, making it more eclectic and dynamic.
