8. Effect of crack pattern on the self-healing capability in traditional, HPC and UHPFRC concretes measured by water and chloride permeability

Abstract

Concrete has a natural self-healing capability to seal small cracks, named autogenous healing, which is mainly produced by continuing hydration and carbonation. This capability is very limited and is activated only when in direct contact with water. High Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete and Engineered Cementitious Composites have been reported to heal cracks for low damage levels, due to their crack pattern with multiple cracks and high cement contents. While their superior self-healing behaviour compared to traditional concrete types is frequently assumed, this study aims to have a direct comparison to move a step forward in durability quantification. Reinforced concrete beams made of traditional, high-performance and ultra-high-performance fibre-reinforced concretes were prepared, sized 150×100×750 mm3. These beams were pre-cracked in flexion up to fixed strain levels in the tensioned zone to allow the analysis of the effect of the different cracking patterns on the self-healing capability. Afterwards, water permeability tests were performed before and after healing under water immersion. A modification of the water permeability test was also explored using chlorides to evaluate the potential protection of this healing in chloride-rich environments. The results show the superior durability and self-healing performance of UHPFRC elements.

Abstract

[EN] Self-healing is the capability of a material to repair its damage autonomously. Ultra-High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) has potentially higher self-healing properties than conventional concrete because of its lower water/binder content and controlled microcracking due to the high fiber content. This work uses a novel methodology based on the permeability to evaluate autogenous self-healing of UHPFRC and enhanced self-healing, incorporating several additions. To this purpose, one UHPFRC was selected and modified to include alumina nanofibers in 0.25% by the cement weight, nanocellulose (nanocrystals and nanofibers), in a dosage of 0.15% by the cement weight, and 0.8-1.6% of a crystalline admixture. The results obtained show that the methodology proposed allows the evaluation of the self-healing capability of different families of concrete mixes that suffered a similar level of damage using permeability tests adapted to the specific properties of UHPFRC.

Abstract

The third-dimension of scoliosis represent a great challenge for clinicians used to think in two dimensions due to the classical radiographic representation of the deformity. This caused problems in everyday clinical approaches, and led to the development of new bidimensional classifications (King, Lenke) who tried in different ways to face these problems, mainly in a surgical perspective. Recently, some three-dimensional classifications have been proposed, all developed in laboratory by bioengineers. In this paper we present the existing classifications of scoliosis, both bi-dimensional and three-dimensional and we thoroughly discuss the 3-DEMO (3-D Easy Morphological) that has been first presented years ago, and recently thoroughly published; this classification has been developed by clinicians with the main aim of being understandable and easily applicable to everyday clinical life.
