Recent decarbonization efforts have led to interests in producing more bio-based chemicals. One attractive compound produced biochemically is the platform chemical known as 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO). In this work a mild alkaline pretreatment using sodium carbonate was performed on corn stover (CS) and switchgrass (SG) to generate hydrolysates for fermentation with the 2,3-BDO producer bacteria strain Paenibacillius polymyxa. Enzymatic hydrolysis performed on the pretreated CS and SG produced theoretical sugar yields of 80 % and 95 % for glucose and xylose, respectively. Fermentations with P. polymxya conducted in anaerobic bottles produced 2,3-BDO reaching concentrations ranging from 14 to 18 g/L with negligible conversion into acetoin. Bioreactor fermentations using the hydrolysate media generated up to 43 g/L and 34 g/L of 2,3-BDO from pretreated CS and SG, respectively, within 24 h of fermentation. Wild canids serve as reservoir for various vector-borne pathogens of veterinary and medical importance, including the canine heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis . In North and Central America, coyotes ( Canis latrans ) may be a relevant reservoir host for heartworm transmission. The objective of this study was to determine the occurrence of D. immitis in coyotes across Texas using integrated antigen detection test and molecular assays. Matching whole blood and serum samples were collected from 122 coyotes from different locations across the state of Texas, United States, encompassing nine counties. Collections occurred from February to April 2016, and December 2016. Samples were assessed serologically using a commercial microtiter plate ELISA (DiroCHEK®), and molecularly by conventional PCR targeting the cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1 ( cox1 ) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 ( nad5 ) of the mitochondrial DNA, and via a TaqMan© probe-based real-time PCR protocol, also targeting a fragment of the cox1 gene. Overall, 12 (9.83%) samples tested positive when serological and molecular results were combined. Seven of 122 samples (5.73%) were antigen-positive, 8 (6.55%) were qPCR-positive, and 4 (3.27%) were positive using conventional PCR. Of 12 positive samples, 4 tested antigen-positive by DiroCHEK® but were negative in all molecular tests, another 4 tested positive by at least one of the molecular assays but tested negative by DiroCHEK®, and 3 samples tested positive by both antigen test and at least one of the molecular assays. Two samples (16.67%) tested positive on both the antigen test and both conventional PCR and qPCR. Our study confirmed the presence of D. immitis infection in coyotes from southern and northern Texas. Carbonized lignin has been proposed as a sustainable and domestic source of activated, amorphous, graphitic, and nanostructured carbon for many industrial applications as the structure can be tuned through processing conditions. However, the inherent variability of lignin and its complex physicochemical structure resulting from feedstock and pulping selection make the Process-Structure-Property-Performance (PSPP) relationships hard to define. In this work, radial distribution functions (RDFs) from synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering of lignin-based carbon composites (LBCCs) are investigated using the Hierarchical Decomposition of the Radial Distribution Function (HDRDF) modelling method to characterize the local atomic environment and develop quantitative PSPP relationships. PSPP relationships for LBCCs defined by this work include crystallite size dependence on lignin feedstock as well as increasing crystalline volume fraction, nanoscale composite density, and crystallite size with increasing reduction temperature., (© 2022 The Authors. The Activating Transcription Factor 5 (ATF5) is a basic leucine-zipper (bZIP) transcription factor (TF) with proposed stress-protective, anti-apoptotic and oncogenic roles which were all established in cell systems. In whole animals, Atf5 function seems highly context dependent. Atf5 is strongly expressed in the rodent nose and mice knockout (KO) pups have defective olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs), smaller olfactory bulbs (OB), while adults are smell deficient. It was therefore proposed that Atf5 plays an important role in maturation and maintenance of OSNs. Atf5 expression was also described in murine liver and bones where it appears to promote differentiation of progenitor cells. By contrast in the rodent brain, Atf5 was first described as uniquely expressed in neuroprogenitors and thus, proposed to drive their proliferation and inhibit their differentiation. However, it was later also found in mature neurons stressing the need for additional work in whole animals. ATF5 is well conserved with two paralogs, atf5a and atf5b in zebrafish. Here, we present the expression patterns for both from 6 h (hpf) to 5day post-fertilization (dpf). We found early expression for both genes, and from 1dpf onwards overlapping expression patterns in the inner ear and the developing liver. In the brain, at 24hpf both atf5a and atf5b were expressed in the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. However, from 2dpf and onwards we only detected atf5a expression namely in the olfactory bulbs, the mesencephalon, and the metencephalon. We further evidenced additional differential expression for atf5a in the sensory neurons of the olfactory organs, and for atf5b in the neuromasts, that form the superficial sensory organ called the lateral line (LL). The novel fatty acids 18-methyl-5,9-icosadienoic acid [1] and 19-methyl-5,9-icosadienoic acid [2] were identified in the Caribbean sponge Erylus formosus. Other interesting fatty acids identified were the branched acids 3-methylpentadecanoic acid and 3-methylhexadecanoic acid, which are known to possess larvicidal activity. The most stable conformation of the new acid 19-methyl-5,9-icosadienoic acid is also presented as predicted by Molecular Mechanics (MM2) calculations. The sterol composition of E. formosus is also reported.

The alpha-hydroxy fatty acids 2-hydroxy-eicosanoic (1) acid, 2-hydroxyheneicosanoic (2) acid, 2-hydroxydocosanoic (3) acid, 2-hydroxytetracosanoic (4) acid, 2-hydroxy-23-methyl-tetracosanoic acid and 2-hydroxypentacosanoic (5) acid were isolated from the Caribbean sponges Verongula gigantea and Aplysina archeri. The very long chain fatty acids 5,9-nonacosadienoic acid (29:2) and 5,9,23-tricontatrienoic acid (30:3) were also identified together with the iso-prenoid fatty acid 3,7,11,15-tetramethylhexadecanoic (phytanic) acid that seems to be common in the Aplysinidae. A. archeri contained an extremely long chain fatty acid tentatively characterized as dotricontaenoic (32:1) acid. These acids were found to occur in phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine and traces of phosphatidylglycerol.
