This paper proposes a cost-effective architecture for an RF pulse generator for superconducting qubits. Most existing works use arbitrary waveform generators (AWGs) that require both a large amount of high-bandwidth memories and high-performance analog circuits to achieve the highest gate fidelity with an optimized RF pulse waveform. The proposed pulse generator architecture significantly simplifies both the generator circuit and the waveform of the RF pulse to a cost-aware square pulses. This architecture eliminates the requirement for power- and cost-intensive AWG, a major obstacle in realizing scalable quantum computers. Additionally, this paper proposes a process to optimize pulse waveforms to maximize fidelity of gate operations for single and multiple qubits. Quantum dynamics simulation of transmon qubits, wherein the state of system evolves with time, demonstrates that our pulse generator can achieve practically the same gate fidelity as ideal RF pulses, while substantially reducing the performance requirements of memory and analog circuits.

Dissolution dynamical nuclear polarization has been applied in various fields, including chemistry, biology, and medical science. To expand the scope of these applications, the nuclear singlet state, which is decoherence-free against dipolar relaxation between spin pairs, has been studied experimentally, theoretically, and numerically. The singlet state composed of proton spins is used in several applications, such as enhanced polarization preservation, molecular tag to probe slow dynamic processes, and detection of ligand--protein complexes. In this study, we predict the lifetimes of the nuclear spin states composed of proton spin pairs using the molecular dynamics method and quantum chemistry simulations. We consider intramolecular and intermolecular dipolar, chemical shift anisotropy, and spin--rotation interactions. In particular, the relaxation rate of intermolecular dipolar interactions is calculated using the molecular dynamics method for various solvents. The calculated values and the experimental values are of the same order of magnitude. Our program would provide insight into the molecular design of several NMR applications and would be helpful in predicting the nuclear spin relaxation time of synthetic molecules in advance., Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures

We propose a method for learning temporal data using a parametrized quantum circuit. We use the circuit that has a similar structure as the recurrent neural network which is one of the standard approaches employed for this type of machine learning task. Some of the qubits in the circuit are utilized for memorizing past data, while others are measured and initialized at each time step for obtaining predictions and encoding a new input datum. The proposed approach utilizes the tensor product structure to get nonlinearity with respect to the inputs. Fully controllable, ensemble quantum systems such as an NMR quantum computer is a suitable choice of an experimental platform for this proposal. We demonstrate its capability with Simple numerical simulations, in which we test the proposed method for the task of predicting cosine and triangular waves and quantum spin dynamics. Finally, we analyze the dependency of its performance on the interaction strength among the qubits in numerical simulation and find that there is an appropriate range of the strength. We employ so-called quantum kernel estimation to exploit complex quantum dynamics of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance for machine learning. We propose to map an input to a feature space by input-dependent Hamiltonian evolution, and the kernel is estimated by the interference of the evolution. Simple machine learning tasks, namely one-dimensional regression tasks and two-dimensional classification tasks, are performed using proton spins which exhibit correlation over 10 spins. We also performed numerical simulations to evaluate the performance without the noise inevitable in the actual experiments. The performance of the trained model tends to increase with the longer evolution time, or equivalently, with a larger number of spins involved in the dynamics for certain tasks. This work presents a quantum machine learning experiment using one of the largest quantum systems to date.

Using a home-built Ku band ESR spectrometer equipped with an arbitrary waveform generator and a stripline resonator, we implement two types of pulses that would benefit quantum computers: BB1 composite pulse and a microwave frequency comb. Broadband type 1 (BB1) composite pulse is commonly used to combat systematic errors but previous experiments were carried out only on extremely narrow linewidth samples. Using a sample with a linewidth of 9.35 MHz, we demonstrate that BB1 composite pulse is still effective against pulse length errors at a Rabi frequency of 38.46 MHz. The fast control is realized with low microwave power which is required for initialization of electron spin qubits at 0.6 T. We also digitally design and implement a microwave frequency comb to excite multiple spin packets of a different sample. Using this pulse, we demonstrate coherent and well resolved excitations spanning over the entire spectrum of the sample (ranging from -20 to 20 MHz). In anticipation of scaling up to a system with large number of qubits, this approach provides an efficient technique to selectively and simultaneously control multiple qubits defined in the frequency-domain.

A solution with hyperpolarized nuclear spins encoded into a long-lived state has been utilized for sensing chemical phenomena. In a conventional way, nuclear spins are hyperpolarized at very low temperatures. In this work, we demonstrate the encoding of a four-nuclear-spin system hyperpolarized at room temperature into a long-lived state in a solution. We theoretically analyze the performance of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy with a superconducting flux qubit (FQ). Such NMR with the FQ is attractive because of the possibility to detect the relatively small number of nuclear spins in a local region ($\sim\mu$m) with low temperatures ($\sim$ mK) and low magnetic fields ($\sim$ mT), in which other types of quantum sensing schemes cannot easily access. A sample containing nuclear spins is directly attached on the FQ, and the FQ is used as a magnetometer to detect magnetic fields from the nuclear spins. Especially, we consider two types of approaches to NMR with the FQ. One of them is to use spatially inhomogeneous excitations of the nuclear spins, which are induced by a spatially asymmetric driving with radio frequency~(RF) pulses. Such an inhomogeneity causes a change in the DC magnetic flux penetrating a loop of the FQ, which can be detected by a standard Ramsey measurement on the FQ. The other approach is to use a dynamical decoupling on the FQ to measure AC magnetic fields induced by Larmor precession of the nuclear spins. In this case, neither a spin excitation nor a spin polarization is required since the signal comes from fluctuating magnetic fields of the nuclear spins. We calculate the minimum detectable density (number) of the nuclear spins for the FQ with experimentally feasible parameters. We show that the minimum detectable density (number) of the nuclear spins with these approaches is around $10^{21}$ /cm$^3$ ($10^8$) with an accumulation time of a second., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

We experimentally demonstrate quantum machine learning using NMR based on a framework of quantum reservoir computing. Reservoir computing is for exploiting natural nonlinear dynamics with large degrees of freedom, which is called a reservoir, for a machine learning purpose. Here we propose a concrete physical implementation of a quantum reservoir using controllable dynamics of a nuclear spin ensemble in a molecular solid. In this implementation, we demonstrate learning of nonlinear functions with binary or continuous variable inputs with low mean squared errors. Quantum reservoir computing provides a framework for exploiting the natural dynamics of quantum systems as a computational resource. It can implement real-time signal processing and solve temporal machine learning problems in general, which requires memory and nonlinear mapping of the recent input stream using the quantum dynamics in computational supremacy region, where the classical simulation of the system is intractable. A nuclear magnetic resonance spin-ensemble system is one of the realistic candidates for such physical implementations, which is currently available in laboratories. In this paper, considering these realistic experimental constraints for implementing the framework, we introduce a scheme, which we call a spatial multiplexing technique, to effectively boost the computational power of the platform. This technique exploits disjoint dynamics, which originate from multiple different quantum systems driven by common input streams in parallel. Accordingly, unlike designing a single large quantum system to increase the number of qubits for computational nodes, it is possible to prepare a huge number of qubits from multiple but small quantum systems, which are operationally easy to handle in laboratory experiments. We numerically demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique using several benchmark tasks and quantitatively investigate its specifications, range of validity, and limitations in detail., Comment: 15 pages

We propose a classical-quantum hybrid algorithm for machine learning on near-term quantum processors, which we call quantum circuit learning. A quantum circuit driven by our framework learns a given task by tuning parameters implemented on it. The iterative optimization of the parameters allows us to circumvent the high-depth circuit. Theoretical investigation shows that a quantum circuit can approximate nonlinear functions, which is further confirmed by numerical simulations. Hybridizing a low-depth quantum circuit and a classical computer for machine learning, the proposed framework paves the way toward applications of near-term quantum devices for quantum machine learning.

Protecting quantum information from decoherence due to environmental noise is vital for fault-tolerant quantum computation. To this end, standard quantum error correction employs parallel projective measurements of individual particles, which makes the system extremely complicated. Here we propose measurement-free topological protection in two dimension without any selective addressing of individual particles. We make use of engineered dissipative dynamics and feedback operations to reduce the entropy generated by decoherence in such a way that quantum information is topologically protected. We calculate an error threshold, below which quantum information is protected, without assuming selective addressing, projective measurements, nor instantaneous classical processing. All physical operations are local and translationally invariant, and no parallel projective measurement is required, which implies high scalability. Furthermore, since the engineered dissipative dynamics we utilized has been well studied in quantum simulation, the proposed scheme can be a promising route progressing from quantum simulation to fault-tolerant quantum information processing., Comment: 17pages, 6 figures

We propose a scalable and practical implementation of spin amplification which does not require individual addressing nor a specially tailored spin network. We have demonstrated a gain of 140 in a solid-state nuclear spin system of which the spin polarization has been increased to 0.12 using dynamic nuclear polarization with photoexcited triplet electron spins. Spin amplification scalable to a higher gain opens the door to the single spin measurement for a readout of quantum computers as well as practical applications of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to infinitesimal samples which have been concealed by thermal noise., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures
