Abstract

One of the most recent environmental concerns is the emergence of new pollutants, such as antibiotics, and increasing antimicrobial resistance in bacteria. Therefore, achieving effective methods for treating these pollutants is very important and considerable. Extensive studies have been conducted on antibiotic removal from water by carbon-based materials. Engineered biochar-based adsorbents and biochar composites can effectively increase the yield of antibiotics adsorption. Adsorbents based on biochars are made from various raw materials at different conditions. Also, physically and chemically modified biochars and their composites could be used. The structure and physicochemical properties of adsorbents and antibiotics and the environmental conditions affect the absorption of antibiotics by biochars. Research has shown that biochar has many advantages, including a wide variety of available raw materials, and they are cheap. Furthermore, it could be regenerated and reused by efficient management, which is the significant advantage of biochar-based adsorbents. Although biochar usage is a good choice for removing antibiotics from aqueous solutions, it is possible to improve its adsorption capacity with more studies to optimize the main parameters and new methods in its production and thus cause economic benefits.

2. Eplerenone Reverses Age-Dependent Cardiac Fibrosis Through Downregulating Osteopontin

Abstract

Background: The risk of cardiovascular disease dramatically increases with Ageing. Nowadays it is fully revealed that the fibrotic remodelling is the main cause of cardiac structural and functional changes related to the normal aging process, but the related signaling pathways and mechanisms are incompletely understood. Thus finding the new therapeutic approaches targeting cardiac fibrotic remodelling, may be necessary to develop preventive care in geriatric population against cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we evaluated the potential role of osteopontin (OPN) as novel mediators of age-dependent fibrotic pathways in heart as well as the effect of eplerenone on cardiac fibrosis reversal. Methods: Fischer-344 (F-344) rats has been used as three groups: young rats (2–3months old), aged rats (22-24 months old) without any treatment and aged rats treated with eplerenone (100 mg/kg/day) for 2 weeks. The expression level of OPN has been evaluated using real-time PCR and histological assessments were done to assess cardiac tissue fibrosis.Results: The expression level of OPN in aged rats was significantly higher than young rats and treatment with eplerenone significantly attenuated the level of OPN as well as cardiac fibrosis compare to untreated aged rats. Conclusion: Targeting cardiac fibroblast function with eplerenone could decrease expression of OPN marker and cause to reversal age-related cardiac fibrotic changes.

3. Effect of pH on physicochemical properties and stability of sodium casseinate-pectin stabilized emulsion.

Abstract

The main objective of present study was to investigate the effect of pH (5-7) on the physicochemical properties of canola oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion stabilized using pectin and sodium caseinate. In the present study, the physicochemical emulsion properties assessed by measuring the zetapotential, average droplet size, apparent viscosity, turbidity, and creaming stability were considered as response variables. Canola oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion was prepared by mixing 10% (w/w) canola oil with 0.5% (w/w) sodium caseinate, 1.5% (w/w) pectin, 0.75% (w/w) propylene glycol and 0.2% NaCl. The results indicated that the pH and temperature had significant (p < 0.05) effect on all the response variables studied. The highest creaming stability was observed at pH 5.0, which was attributed to multilayer formation in interfacial area. This observation could be explained by the fact that the pectin adsorbed to the droplet surfaces and increased the repulsion between the droplets, thereby preventing droplet flocculation. It was found that the average droplet size increased when pH increased from 5 to 7. The highest emulsion viscosity was also observed at pH 5; while the emulsion viscosity decreased as the pH increased from 5.5 to 7.0. This could be due to the negative effect of pH on emulsion viscosity, thus enhancing the creaming instability induced at higher pH (> 5).

4. Influence Of Ph And Different Emulsion Components On Stability And Physicochemical Properties Of Canola Oil-In-Water Emulsion

Abstract

The main objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of pH (5-7), processing conditions (i.e. pressure, cycle and temperature) and main emulsion components (namely, propylene glycol, caseinate sodium, pectin, sodium chloride and canola oil) on the physicochemical properties of sodium caseinate-pectin stabilized emulsions. In this work, the physicochemical emulsion properties assessed by measuring the zeta-potential, average droplet size, apparent viscosity, turbidity, and creaming stability were considered as response variables. The results indicated that the pH and temperature had significant (p < 0.1) effects on all the response variables studied. The highest creaming stability was observed at pH 5, which was attributed to the formation of multilayer in the interfacial area. It was found that the average droplet size increased when pH was increased from 5 to 7. The prepared emulsions showed shear-thinning behaviour at different pH values (5-7). The highest emulsion viscosity was also observed at pH 5; while it decreased when pH was increased from 5.5 to 7. The influence of processing conditions (i.e. pressure, cycle of high pressure homogenizer and temperature of environment to solubilize the pectin) on the physicochemical properties of sodium caseinate-pectin stabilized emulsions were investigated. The results indicated that the independent variables had the most and least significant (p < 0.05) effect on average droplet size and stability, respectively. The effect of cycle of the homogenizer was significant (p < 0.05) in all response variables. The nonlinear regression equations were significantly (p < 0.05) fitted for predicting the changes in all the response variables with relatively high coefficient of determination (R2 > 0.825). It was concluded that desirable physicochemical properties can be achieved when the pressure, cycle, and temperature of the pectin solution were adjusted to 13 MPa, 3, and 80 ° C, respectively.
