Abstract Background The Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I) is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Moonshot Program that supports NCI-designated cancer centers developing tobacco treatment programs for oncology patients who smoke. C3I-funded centers implement evidence-based programs that offer various smoking cessation treatment components (e.g., counseling, Quitline referrals, access to medications). While evaluation of implementation outcomes in C3I is guided by evaluation of reach and effectiveness (via RE-AIM), little is known about technical efficiency—i.e., how inputs (e.g., program costs, staff time) influence implementation outcomes (e.g., reach, effectiveness). This study demonstrates the application of data envelopment analysis (DEA) as an implementation science tool to evaluate technical efficiency of C3I programs and advance prioritization of implementation resources. Methods DEA is a linear programming technique widely used in economics and engineering for assessing relative performance of production units. Using data from 16 C3I-funded centers reported in 2020, we applied input-oriented DEA to model technical efficiency (i.e., proportion of observed outcomes to benchmarked outcomes for given input levels). The primary models used the constant returns-to-scale specification and featured cost-per-participant, total full-time equivalent (FTE) effort, and tobacco treatment specialist effort as model inputs and reach and effectiveness (quit rates) as outcomes. Results In the DEA model featuring cost-per-participant (input) and reach/effectiveness (outcomes), average constant returns-to-scale technical efficiency was 25.66 (SD = 24.56). When stratified by program characteristics, technical efficiency was higher among programs in cohort 1 (M = 29.15, SD = 28.65, n = 11) vs. cohort 2 (M = 17.99, SD = 10.16, n = 5), with point-of-care (M = 33.90, SD = 28.63, n = 9) vs. no point-of-care services (M = 15.59, SD = 14.31, n = 7), larger (M = 33.63, SD = 30.38, n = 8) vs. smaller center size (M = 17.70, SD = 15.00, n = 8), and higher (M = 29.65, SD = 30.99, n = 8) vs. lower smoking prevalence (M = 21.67, SD = 17.21, n = 8). Conclusion Most C3I programs assessed were technically inefficient relative to the most efficient center benchmark and may be improved by optimizing the use of inputs (e.g., cost-per-participant) relative to program outcomes (e.g., reach, effectiveness). This study demonstrates the appropriateness and feasibility of using DEA to evaluate the relative performance of evidence-based programs.

The interaction of a high-intensity laser with a solid target produces an energetic distribution of electrons that pass into the target. These electrons reach the rear surface of the target creating strong electric potentials that act to restrict the further escape of additional electrons. The measurement of the angle, flux and spectra of the electrons that do escape gives insights to the initial interaction. Here, the escaping electrons have been measured using a differentially filtered image plate stack, from interactions with intensities from mid 1020-1017 W/cm2, where the intensity has been reduced by defocussing to increase the size of the focal spot. An increase in electron flux is initially observed as the intensity is reduced from 4x1020 to 6x1018 W/cm2. The temperature of the electron distribution is also measured and found to be relatively constant. 2D particle-in-cell modelling is used to demonstrate the importance of pre-plasma conditions in understanding these observations.

Background: The gills of Red River Pupfish (Cyprinodon rubrofluviatilis) collected from Kansas and Texas, U.S.A., were found to be infected with three monogenoideans, Fundulotrema prolongis, Gyrodactylus rubrofluviatilae n. sp., and a species of Salsuginus., Results: Gyrodactylus rubrofluviatilae n. sp. appears to be a member of a group of six closely related species possessing hamuli with mesially folded roots and a linguiform ventral bar shield, and parasitizing closely related species of Cyprinodon of the North American Gulf Coast and inland waters of the Southwestern United States and northern México. Gyrodactylus rubrofluviatilae n. sp. differs from its close congeners in the morphology of the hamuli, ventral bar, ventral bar shield, and marginal hooks. Because the morphology of the male copulatory complex was not determined of what we believe will eventually be a new species of Salsuginus, a species description is deferred. This is the first report of any parasite from this host., Conclusions: Many North American species currently recognized within the Cyprinodontiformes have not yet been surveyed for species of Fundulotrema, Gyrodactylus, or Salsuginus. This, coupled with the high host specificity generally recognized for these monogeneans, portends there are likely additional new species yet to be discovered. When possible, to help augment morphological data, further studies should employ comprehensive intra- and interspecies molecular analyses to help resolve host-parasite phylogenies.

The extent and nature of genetic differentiation in Semotilus atromaculatus, one of the most abundant and widespread leuciscids in North America, were evaluated based on mitochondrial (mt) and nuclear DNA sequence variation. Phylogenetic relationships were first inferred based on a fragment of the cytochrome b (cytb) region and the nuclear intron s7 gene for S. atromaculatus and all other congeners as well as representative species from all other genera in the creek chub-plagopterin clade. The phylogeography of major haplogroups of S. atromaculatus was also assessed according to variation in a fragment of the mitochondrial cytb region from 567 individuals across its range. All analyses identified S. thoreauianus, S. lumbee and S. corporalis as reciprocally monophyletic groups. Analyses of nuclear sequence variation resolved S. atromaculatus as a single clade, where S. thoreauianus and S. lumbee were recovered as the sister group to S. atromaculatus, and S. corporalis was resolved as sister to all other species in the genus. Analyses of mtDNA sequence variation recovered S. atromaculatus as three well supported and differentiated monophyletic groups, with a widespread genetically homogeneous lineage extending across most of the current range of the species; a more geographically restricted and geographically structured lineage in the southern Appalachians, sister group to S. lumbee; and a geographically restricted lineage was identified from two Gulf Slope basins. Evidence of complex mito-nuclear discordance and phylogeographic differentiation within S. atromaculatus illustrates that further analysis of widespread species is warranted to understand North American freshwater fish diversity and distributions., (© 2018 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles.)

Accurate delimitation of species is a critical first step in protecting biodiversity. Detection of distinct species is especially important for groups of organisms that inhabit sensitive environments subject to recent degradation, such as creeks, springs, and rivers in arid or semi-desert regions. The genus Dionda currently includes six recognized and described species of minnows that live in clear springs and spring-fed creeks of Texas, New Mexico (USA), and northern Mexico, but the boundaries, delimitation, and characterization of species in this genus have not been examined rigorously. The habitats of some of the species in this genus are rapidly deteriorating, and many local populations of Dionda have been extirpated. Considering the increasing concerns over degradation of their habitat, and pending a more detailed morphological revision of the genus, we undertook a molecular survey based on four DNA regions to examine variation over the range of the genus, test species boundaries, and infer phylogenetic relationships within Dionda. Based on analyses of two mitochondrial (cytb and D-loop) and two nuclear (Rag1 and S7) DNA regions from specimens collected throughout the range of Dionda, we identified 12 distinct species in the genus. Formerly synonymized names are available for two of these species, and four other species remain undescribed. We also redefine the known range of six species. The limited distribution of several of the species, coupled with widespread habitat degradation, suggests that many of the species in this genus should be targets for conservation and recovery efforts., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. The primary goal of this study was to determine the extent that selective muscarinic receptor antagonists could discriminate between the chronotropic and coronary vasoconstrictor responses to acetylcholine in isolated rat hearts perfused at constant flow rate. Bolus injections of acetylcholine caused dose-dependent decreases in heart rate and increases in perfusion pressure. The ED50 (95% confidence) of acetylcholine for decreasing rate was 0.463 (0.336-0.640) nmol and the dose that increased perfusion pressure by 30 mm Hg (ED30 mmHg) was 3.19 (2.00-5.08) nmol. The M2 selective antagonist methoctramine (3.16 microM) produced a 307-fold increase in the ED50 for bradycardia but had no significant effect on the pressor response to acetylcholine. In marked contrast, the M3 antagonist hexahydrosiladifenidol displayed a distinct preference for inhibiting coronary vasoconstrictor responses to acetylcholine. When present at 316 nM, this drug produced a 66-fold increase in the ED30 mmHg but only a 6-fold increase in the ED50 for bradycardia. The M1 selective antagonist pirenzepine (316 nM) produced a 5- to 7-fold increase in both parameters. Pretreatment with pertussis toxin (25 microg/kg, i.p.) essentially eliminated acetylcholine-evoked bradycardia although pressor responses persisted with some reduction. These observations demonstrate that cardiac and coronary vascular effects of acetylcholine can be clearly discriminated with specific muscarinic antagonists. Furthermore, they provide evidence that the M3 receptor subtype mediates the vasoconstrictor effect of acetylcholine on resistance vessels in rat heart.
