Karakachan sheep represents an endangered, indigenous sheep breed from Balkan Peninsula. There is relatively little information about the characteristics of this sheep breed in the veterinary scientific literature. The aim of this research was an examination of certain metabolic profile parameters of the Karakachan sheep blood serum, and variability of their concentrations in comparison to age and some other indigenous sheep breeds from Balkans. Examination was conducted on 14 clinically healthy sheep divided in two age groups. Blood samples were collected by puncture of v. jugularis and blood serum was separated after spontaneous coagulation. The concentrations of total protein, albumin, calcium, inorganic phosphorus, aspartate amino transferase (AST) and γ- glutamyl transferase (GGT) were determined. In relation to age of Karakachan sheep, statistically significant difference between the calculated mean values of examined parameters was not observed. A statistically significant difference was found between the mean concentrations of the studied parameters in Karakachan sheep and other breeds in total protein (Tsigai, Dubrovnik and Dalmatian sheep), albumin (Dalmatian), calcium and inorganic phosphorus (Tsigai, Dubrovnik) and AST's (Dalmatian, Karakachan sheep from Bulgaria).

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of treatment with a single injection of GnRH and PGF2α on estrous response, fertility and service period. A total of 120 lactating Simmental cows were divided into four groups of 30 cows each: group PGF2α 40 was treated on the 40th day post partum with a single injection of 2 mL prostaglandin analogue (Estrumate), group PGF2α 50 was treated in the same way on the 50th day, group GnRH was treated on the 40th day post partum with a single injection of 2 mL GnRH analogue (Receptal), and the fourth group (control) was not hormonally treated. Quality of meat products in Republic of Srpska is defined by the Regulations of minced, semi-finished and finished meat products ("Official Gazette of BiH" No. 82/2013). The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition of the chicken and liver pate, and to determine the frequency of the content deviations which components values are specified in the Regulations. The average protein content in 13 respondents, samples of chicken pate was 11,72% (10,40%-12,43%) and in 10 samples tested liver pate was 11,13% (9,80%-12,8%). The average fat content observed in samples of chicken pate was 24,89% (20,94%-27,92%) and in liver pates 22,81% (13,66%-26,99%). The average salt content observed in samples of chicken pate was 1,73% (1,25%-2,06%) and in liver pate 1,81% (1,63%-2,07%). The average water content in the samples of chicken meat paste was 60,25% (57,32%-62,61%), and in samples of liver pates 62,59% (60,27%-67,23%). Swine streptococcosis is a disease caused by bacterial species Streptococcus suis characterized by: septicaemia, bronchopneumonia, meningitis, polyserositis and polyarthritis. It is widely known that streptococcosis does not cause high mortalities in a flock. Unlike records related to Streptococcus suis type II, there are no relevant literature data to show that Streptococcus suis type I is prominently endotheliotropic, which would eventually cause haemorrhagic syndrome. The paper describes a case of haemorrhagic septicaemia in several litters of sucking piglets bred in unfavourable farming conditions. Clinical and pathological findings suggested general haemorrhagic syndrome. Based on clinical examination, autopsy findings and further laboratory tests, it is concluded that mortality was to be attributed to septicaemia caused by Streptococcus suis type I. Occurrence of haemorrhagic septicaemia initiated by Streptococcus suis type I proves that swine streptococcosis should not be ruled out from the group of etiologic agents of hemorrhagic syndrome, which is particularly important in classical swine fever differential diagnosis. A prerequisite to the development of an efficient animal health, food safety and traceability management system in the animal food production chain is the implementation of an integrated veterinary informational management system (VIMS) capable for the capture, storage, analysis and retrieval of data and providing the opportunity for the cumulative gathering of the knowledge and capability for its competent interpretation. Such a system will enable collecting appropriate data, including quality management and inspection controls, from all establishments and commodities in the "from farm to fork" food production chain (farms, holdings, slaughterhouses, laboratories, traders etc.) in a structured, predefined format, and facilitate competent analyses and reporting of such data, as well as the improvement of the existing programs and strategies. The role of information system in animal disease diagnosis, surveillance and notification, control of national and international trade of commodities, food safety management, investigation of diseases, predictive microbiology and quantitative risk assessment is of great importance for the quality of veterinary service. Integral part of the VIMS is animal disease notification system designed according to and in compliance with international requirements, standards and recommendation and able to exchange relevant information with similar information systems. Chicken behavior recognition is crucial for a number of reasons, including promoting animal welfare, ensuring the early detection of health issues, optimizing farm management practices, and contributing to more sustainable and ethical poultry farming. In this paper, we introduce a technique for recognizing chicken behavior on edge computing devices based on video sensing mosaicing. Our method combines video sensing mosaicing with deep learning to accurately identify specific chicken behaviors from videos. It attains remarkable accuracy, achieving 79.61% with MobileNetV2 for chickens demonstrating three types of behavior. These findings underscore the efficacy and promise of our approach in chicken behavior recognition on edge computing devices, making it adaptable for diverse applications. The ongoing exploration and identification of various behavioral patterns will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of chicken behavior, enhancing the scope and accuracy of behavior analysis within diverse contexts.

Nocardia cyriacigeorgica is a well-known agent of human nocardiosis and is considered an emerging pathogen, however, its identification to the species level is complex for many clinical laboratories. Available data on the clinical significance of N. cyriacigeorgica in veterinary medicine are sparse and mainly concern isolated reports of pyogranulomatous lesions in domestic animals. We report a case of severe bovine mastitis caused by N. cyriacigeorgica that did not respond to conventional antimicrobial therapy in a small holding in Bosnia and Herzegovina. After isolation of the pathogen, further identification by routine microbiological methods was not possible. Susceptibility to antimicrobials was tested using the disc diffusion method according to published recommendations. The sample was also tested by MALDI-ToF MS with inconclusive results. In addition, 16S rRNA sequence analysis, verified by multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) using the gyrB, 16S rRNA, secA1, and hsp65 sequences, confirmed the species N. cyriacigeorgica. To our knowledge, this is the first report of isolation of N. cyriacigeorgica from a clinical case of bovine mastitis in a European dairy farm and the first MLSA method approach to distinguish a Nocardia spp. strain isolated from animals.

Malignant ovine babesiosis or ovine babesiosis caused by Babesia ovis is an important hemoprotozoan tick-borne disease of sheep. After 70 years, a study was conducted in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the geographical areas of Podrinje and Eastern Herzegovina, aiming to molecularly identify and determine the presence of B. ovis infection in the sheep population. From 2019-2021, a clinical and molecular study was conducted in 53 flocks, and 192 sheep were examined, divided into two groups: clinically suspected and asymptomatic sheep. The presence of B. ovis was confirmed by PCR in blood samples of 75 % and 11.21 % of clinically affected and asymptomatic sheep, respectively. The majority of clinical cases of malignant ovine babesiosis were confirmed in the Rudo epidemiological unit (78.78 %) within the Podrinje region indicating typical seasonal pattern of disease occurrence and endemic focus. Rhipicephalus bursa was only tick species identified in Podrinje and Eastern Herzegovina. Acute form of disease was observed with dominant clinical signs of depression, fever, loss of appetite and respiratory distress. Fatal outcome was recorded in 12.28 % of cases. This study describes the molecular detection of B. ovis in sheep in Bosnia and Herzegovina for the first time. To the authors knowledge, this survey represents a report of the highest number of clinical cases of malignant ovine babesiosis in Europe. Background: Whiplash injury is one of the most common injuries in traffic accidents. Most of the injured recover within three months, however, a significant number have symptoms much longer., Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the basic epidemiological characteristics of whiplash (gender, age, collision type, the type of participants in an accident, clinical signs) on Bosnia and Herzegovina roads and identify risk factors for chronic symptoms., Methods: The subjects of this retrospective study were traffic accident whiplash patients who were diagnosed, treated and monitored in a single hospital center. The initial examination was performed on the day or the day after the accident and follow-up examinations after four weeks, three months, and six months., Results: Out of the 241 patients in this study, 14.1% had symptoms over six months after the trauma. 54.7% of the injured belong to the third and fourth decade and close to 80% were younger than 50 years. In addition to neck pain, the most common symptoms were limited neck mobility (69.7%), muscle spasms (63.5%), palpable pain of neck muscles (56%), headache (43.6%), nausea (23.7%). Statistical analysis showed a positive impact of age, Quebec Task Force (QTF) grade II, and more injury severity and cervical spine degenerative changes on prolonged recovery., Conclusions: The overwhelming majority of the injured belong to the working population. QTF2+ score is a useful indicator for prolonged recovery and chronic symptoms. Age, QTF score and degenerative changes of the cervical spine indicate an increased risk for poor recovery and chronic symptoms.

Concentrations of toxic elements (lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic) were measured in water, sediment, and four commercial fish species (Cyprinus carpio, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Silurus glanis, and Esox lucius) and their tissues (muscle, liver, and kidney) from Saničani Lake, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The concentration of toxic elements was measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. Toxic element concentrations were significantly affected by the fish species and tissues sampled. The lead was the most heavily deposited element in lake sediments and waters. The highest concentrations of Pb and Cd were in the kidney in all four fish species. Concentrations of Hg and As were higher in the muscle than in the kidney and liver in all four fish species. The toxic element concentrations in all examined tissues were significantly higher in Silurus glanis and Esox lucius than in the other fish species examined. Concentrations of all tested elements were present in the fish muscle at different levels, but these levels were under the maximum levels allowed by the European Union and FAO/WHO. Accordingly, fish meat from this lake is acceptable for human consumption.

We report two cases of bovine babesiosis caused by Babesia divergens in a region of central Bosnia and Herzegovina. The cases were detected in June 2017 and July 2018 from two small backyard farms. Routine clinical assessments, including physical examination and haematology, revealed lethargy, fever, anaemia, leukopenia and haemoglobinuria in the affected animals. Serum alterations included an elevation of aspartate aminotransferase and a decrease of serum phosphate or hypophosphatemia. Thrombocytopenia was detected in the first clinical case. Microscopic examination of blood smears revealed intracytoplasmic protozoan parasites from the genus Babesia. Molecular screening of both animals confirmed the presence of Babesia divergens, the causative agent of bovine babesiosis. B. divergens DNA was also detected in two engorged female Ixodes ricinus ticks removed from these animals. In addition, Mycoplasma wenyonii DNA was identified by molecular screening in the animal examined in June 2017, and in I. ricinus ticks feeding on this animal. This study provides molecular confirmation of B. divergens as a cause of piroplasmosis in cattle in South-East Europe. The detection of M. wenyonii DNA ain I. ricinus also provides the first evidence of this bacterium in ticks in Europe.

Aims: Aelurostrongylus abstrusus (Railliet, 1898) and Angiostrongylus chabaudi (Biocca, 1957) are important cardiopulmonary metastrongyloids in felids. This case report describes, for the first time, a natural and patent mixed infection caused by A. abstrusus and A. chabaudi in a European wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris) from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Most important, this is a rare report of fatal parasitism in wildlife, involving a severe verminous bronchopneumonia and gastrointestinal nematode and cestode infection with Toxocara cati, Taenia taeniaeformis, Aonchotheca putorii, and Ancylostoma spp., Results: Emphasis is set to detailed description of granulomatous, interstitial verminous bronchopneumonia, morphological description of A. abstrusus and A. chabaudi, and molecular confirmation of diagnosis by triplex PCR., Conclusion: The data provided in this study contribute to the knowledge on the epizootiology and pathological effect of these neglected metastrongyloids in European wildcat.

Aims: This case report describes a clinical case of patent and natural infection with trichuroid Eucoleus aerophilus in a 5-month-old, mixed-breed female dog in Bosnia and Herzegovina., Methods: A detailed history was taken from the owner. Physical exam and thoracic radiography were performed. Faecal sample was processed by the passive flotation tube test with saturated zinc sulphate solution. After the final diagnosis, a dose of 0.4 mg /kg ivermectin was applied subcutaneously to the diseased dog., Results: The history revealed intermittent, non-productive cough after physical exercise. During the physical exam, mild signs of general distress, moderate cachexia with bad body condition, increased heart and respiratory rates, mild dyspnoea and increased bronchovesicular respirations were observed. Thoracic radiography showed mixed bronchial-alveolar lung pattern compatible with chronic bronchopneumonia. Trichuroid eggs of Eucoleus aerophilus were detected in faecal samples from the affected dog. Ivermectin administration at a dose of 0.4 mg/kg was sufficient to eliminate parasitic infection with Eucoleus aerophilus., Conclusion: This is the first report of respiratory eucoleosis in a dog from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Introduction: Hemolysis can occur during sample collection, handling and transport. It is more frequent when the non-laboratory staff performs sampling. The aim of this study was to assess nurses' knowledge on the causes of hemolysis and consequential impact on the laboratory tests results. Additionally, the differences in knowledge, related to work experience, professional degree and previous education about hemolysis were explored., Materials and Methods: An anonymus survey, containing 11 questions on demographics, causes of hemolysis, its impact on biochemical parameters and nurses' attitude towards additional education in preanalytics, was conducted in four Croatian hospitals. The answers were compared by Chi-squared and Fischer exact test., Results: In total, 562 survey results were collected. Majority of nurses declared familiarity with the term "hemolysis" (99.6%). There were 77% of correct answers regarding questions about the causes of hemolysis, but only 50% when it comes to questions about interference in biochemical tests. The percentage of correct answers about causes was significantly lower (P=0.029) among more experienced nurses, and higher (P=0.027) in those with higher professional degree, while influence of previous education was not significant. Also, higher percentage of correct answers about interferences was encountered in nurses with longer work experience (P=0.039). More than 70% of nurses declared that additional education about preanalytical factors would be beneficial., Conclusion: Croatian nurses are familiar with the definition of hemolysis, but a lack of knowledge about causes and influence on laboratory test results is evident. Nurses are eager to improve their knowledge in this field of preanalytical phase.

In the last five years, bluetongue has been diagnosed in the following areas of the Mediterranean Basin: Algeria, France, Greece, Italy, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey. In the Balkan Peninsula, the disease has been recorded in Bulgaria (since 1999), Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania. Bluetongue arrived in the Balkans from Turkey in 1999. In Serbia and Montenegro, the disease was first diagnosed in July 2001 in the Zubin Potok region of Kosovo. In August, the neighbouring regions of Novi Pazar, Tutin, Rozaje and Leposavic were also affected. The disease was simultaneously observed in eastern Serbia in the regions bordering Bulgaria (city regions of Bosilegrad, Pirot and Knjazevac). The occurrence of the disease and clinical signs indicate that the disease was also present in western Serbia in 2001. During 2002, more extensive serological investigations of animals in some regions of Yugoslavia indicated that the disease had spread towards the north of the country. At the same time, serological evidence also revealed the presence of the disease in the east of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The epizootiological data show that the northernmost point of disease spread in Serbia was the River Sava.
