La présente étude s'intéresse aux nécrologies publiées dans la presse àl'occasion de la mort de Jules et surtout de celle d'Edmond de Goncourt. Grâce à Retronews et à Gallica nous avons pu estimer la façon dont la presse française appréhende ces deux décès à 26 ans d'intervalle.

In an increasingly interconnected reality, the areas of research look - necessarily - at a remodelling of the IT architectures of archival portals, with the aim of an interdisciplinary vision capable of connecting the Present with the Past, in order to identify historical narratives and patterns able to enrich the epidemiological pictures, explain the modern pandemics, to be able to modify and record policies suitable to contain and face those of contemporaneity. A reformulation that is based on the application, in historical research, of tools that can reformulate the concept of digitized source, in order to derive, from it, all the information that scholars refer to. Today, information technologies, such as Data mining and the application of HTR (Handwriting Text Recognition) systems - such as the Transkribus platform - would allow us to increase and implement the information available, pushing historians towards research areas and sectors that are still unexplored.

The unpublished necrology kept by the Observant Dominican nuns of San Jacopo in Florence warrants closer study for its unexpected relation to the Savonarolan movement. Begun in 1508, ten years after Savonarola's execution, this register narrated powerful stories focused on illness and dying, casting Suffering nuns who made a "good death" as spiritual exemplars of the Savonarolan movement. This article argues that the necrology took on the politicized task of sustaining the prophet's cult at San Jacopo and forming new nuns in the Savonarolan tradition during years of suppression by church and state officials. In response to heated internecine controversies, the San Marco friars responsible for the nuns' supervision promoted traditional, gendered values when praising the dead, ascribing to nuns only a limited role in religious renewal. The new archival evidence presented here strengthens the case lot the preacher's continued influence in Florentine religious life until the end of the sixteenth century, and shows how the San Marco friars disciplined their female followers as they struggled to define and control the Savonlarolan legacy. The article presents a report on a new necrolog fragment from the Stift Saint Johann in Halberstadt, Germany. Topics discussed here include the Braunschweig City Library which has the fragment of a calendar containing death entries, the 19th century Matthaei Kalant 1534–1555, and Saint Johannist Augustinian Monastery in Halberstadt, Germany.

On October 28 2016 after a long illness Arian P. Kalinin died. He was an outstanding Russian scientist, surgeon, endocrinologist, doctor of medical sciences, professor, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Honored Worker of Science, Professor Emeritus of 12 medical universities and research institutes (4 of them in various countries of CIS).

The use of DNA analysis as a mode of identification of disaster victims has become increasingly predominant to other, traditional, methods of identification in recent years. Scientific advances of the technological processes, high-profile use in identification efforts across the globe (such as after 9/11 or in the Asian Tsunami of 2004), and its inclusion in popular media, have led to its popular adoption as one of the primary modes of identification in disaster scenarios, and to the expectation of its use in all cases by the lay public and media. It is increasingly argued to be integral to post-disaster management. However, depending on the circumstances, location, and type of disaster, this technology may not be appropriate, and its use may instead conflict with socio-political and cultural norms and structures of power. Using examples primarily from Cambodia and Iraq this article will explore what these conflicts may be, and in doing so, question the expanding assumption that DNA analysis is a universally appropriate intervention in disaster victim identification. It will argue instead that its use may be a result of a desire for the political and social capital that this highly prestigious technological intervention offers rather than a solely humanitarian intervention on behalf of survivors and the dead. The archive of the Augustinian canonry of St. Georgen-Herzogenburg in Lower Austria keeps the fragment of a necrology, which has been little known to the scientific community up to now. Form and content suggest that its entries can be dated between the early 13th and the beginning of the 15th century. Since all the other necrologies preserved in the canonry are early modern, the fragment is of considerable importance for investigating its medieval history. Starting with a detailed description of the source, the paper deals with issues such as local and wider personal networks, commemoration of the dead, and prayer confraternities of St. Georgen-Herzogenburg. Humbert of Romans died on 14 July 1277. He was buried in the convent church at Valenciennes. Although he has never been officially beatified, in 1278 his name was recorded in the order's martyrology at the General Chapter of Milan and in the Order of Preachers he is worshipped as blessed. Humbert's works are on topics on which he felt himself qualified to write and which he considered to be fundamental for both the present and the future of the order. They include homiletics and the Dominican modus vivendi. His writings can be roughly divided into three groups: 1. epistles, 2. monastic writings and 3. homiletic writings. Humbert's texts authentically evidence his long-term organizational impact on the institutional development of the Dominican Order. The Commentary of the Rule of St. Augustine is a work primarily intended for the internal use of the Order of Preachers. As the Expositio regulae S. Augustini it was written in 1248 - 1254. From the total number of 209 chapters we have selected five (143, 144, 148, 149 and 151). They were on learning as such, philosophy, access to the books and on the office of lectors. These reflect a very punctilious ability of the author to capture the finest details as well as his extraordinary capacity to accurately describe the things about which he was writing. The article discusses the translation and biography in Frederick Brown's 2006 biography of the author Gustave Flaubert "Flaubert: A Biography" as well as the inédit, or unpublished work, "Vie et Travaux du R.P. Cruchard." The inédit that gives the collection its title is a mock biography of a scandalous priest, the Reverend Father Cruchard of the Barnabites. Another of the inédits titled "Bal donné au Czar" offers a view of Flaubert as a socialite when he wrote notes after attending a ball given by the French ruler Napoleon III In honour of Czar Alexander II of Russia in 1867. The two remaining inédits that were discussed by Julian Barnes in the "Times Literary Supplement" magazine as necrologies are noted.

This short article honours Professor Raphael Lemkin (1900–1959), author of the term ‘genocide’ and initiator of the Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death. Since the late 1970s midwives and others in the UK have held strong, negative views of Nestle, based on reports that they were causing the deaths of many babies in third world countries. A boycott on their products started in Minneapolis in 1997 and spread internationally. However, despite its formal end in the USA in 1894, and further rejection in 1989, it continues to this day in the UK. A group of midwives, with various backgrounds, embarked on a fact-finding visit to Nestlé in 2005. Along with some background information, the views of this group are encapsulated in this article. OBJECTIVE Aimed at reducing surgical deaths, several recent initiatives have attempted to establish volume-based referral strategies in high-risk surgery. Although payers are leading the most visible of these efforts, it is unknown whether volume standards will also reduce resource use.METHODS We studied postoperative length of stay and 30-day readmission rate after 14 cardiovascular and cancer procedures using the 1994-1999 national Medicare database (total n = 2.5 million). We used regression techniques to examine the relationship between length of stay, 30-day readmission, and hospital volume, adjusting for age, gender, race, comorbidity score, admission acuity, and mean social security income.RESULTS Mean postoperative length of stay ranged from 3.4 days (carotid endarterectomy) to 19.6 days (esophagectomy). There was no consistent relationship between volume and mean length of stay; it significantly increased across volume strata for 7 of the 14 procedures and significantly decreased across volume strata for the other 7. Mean length of stay at very-low-volume and very-high-volume hospitals differed by more than 1 day for 6 procedures. Of these, the mean length of stay was shorter in high-volume hospitals for 3 procedures (pancreatic resection, esophagectomy, cystectomy), but longer for other procedures (aortic and mitral valve replacement, gastrectomy). The 30-day readmission rate also varied widely by procedure, ranging from 9.9% (nephrectomy) to 22.2% (mitral valve replacement). However, volume was not related to 30-day readmission rate with any procedure.CONCLUSION Although hospital volume may be an important predictor of operative mortality, it is not associated with resource use as reflected by length of stay or readmission rates. The history and scoring of Johamn Sebastian Bach's "Passion According to St. Matthew" are also discussed.

Abstract: Vital records data bases describe large populations over long periods of time, yet their organization and size often preclude or discourage their use. We constructed a microcomputer-based data base of all singleton births in Massachusetts, 1975-84. The original data were stored in 700,000 records, each 174 bytes long, occupying a total of over 120 megabytes (MB). By removing redundant information and unique identifiers, and packing the data, we store 21 fields of this information in a 16-byte record resulting in a data base of 11.1 MB, a saving of over 90 percent of disk space. By using programs written expressly for this data base, we can display a birth weight frequency plot of the entire data set in under 65 seconds on an IBM-compatible PC-AT. Comparable assessments in SAS-PC took over 105 minutes and in main frame SAS on an AS-9000 took over 37 CPU seconds. Implementing similar systems for state registries on births, deaths, cancers, and birth defects potentially offers investigators easy access to vast stores of information and would enable public health officials to produce timely reports, initiate a variety of surveillance activities, and respond rapidly to residents' inquiries about clusters and anomalous disease patterns. The article presents a report from an April 4-6, 2014 conference in Loccum, Germany on researching the Cistercian monastery in Loccum organized by the monastery, the Evangelische Akademie Loccum school, and the cultural history and comparative national research department of the Universität Vechta university. Topics of presentations delivered included Valdemar II, monk, prince of Denmark, and bishop of Schleswig, the history of the monastery's construction, and the necrology of Loccum abbot Theodor Stracke.

The author discusses the dating of the English guild fratres kalendarum, or brothers of the calends, based on an obituary list from the Exeter Cathedral Library, Dean and Chapter manuscript (MS) 3675 from the 14th century. Historian Nicholas Orme's dating of the guild to the early 12th century is mentioned, and the guild's historic members among the laity and clergy of Exeter, England such as Algar, son of Leofflæd, are discussed. The author argues that names from the list date the guild to later in the reign of Henry I.
