In this study, habitat preferences of the European Rollers (Coracias garrulus) in the Northern Anatolia was investigated, in 2014 breeding season. Total of 31 breeding pairs in 4 certain roller sites were located. The average distance between the breeding territories was 1.2 km in one of the roller sites with 17 pairs. Both solitary and colonial breeding pairs were recorded. Overall, 8, 2 and 2 nests (total of 12 nests) were located on sand quarries, concrete buildings and abandoned magpie nests on electrical poles, respectively. The habitat preferences were determined within a radius of 300 m and 1000 m around the nest site for the breeding and foraging habitats, respectively. We conducted the spatial analysis in ArcCIS 10.5 using Corine Land Cover 2012 database. Agricultural areas were the major land cover types where the European Rollers breed in our study. Use of unfavorable habitats and other nest sites including magpie nests necessitated a conservation program for the European Rollers in the study area. Günümüzde hava kirliği, insan sağlığı ve yaşamına olumsuz etkileri ile en önemli çevre sorunlarından biri haline gelmiştir. Özellikle yoğun insan yerleşiminin olduğu kentsel alanlarda hava kirliliğinin azaltılması ile ilgili olarak alınabilecek önlemler büyük önem taşımaktadır. Ağaç ve çalı örtüsünün düzenleyici ekosistem servislerinden biri olarak hava kalitesini arttırdığı bilinmektedir. Bu çalışmada, yoğun hava kirliliğinin görüldüğü bir şehir olan Çorum’da, 1643 ha alana sahip Bahçelievler Mahallesinde, ağaç ve çalıların çeşitli kirleticileri havadan uzaklaştırma miktarları i-Tree Canopy aracı kullanılarak hesaplanmıştır. Sonuçlar, çalışma alanının sadece % 14.8’inin ağaç ve çalı örtüsü ile kaplı olduğunu ve bu alanların yılda yaklaşık 2.6 ton PM10 (10 µ’den küçük, 2.5 µ’den büyük parçacıklar), 379 kg PM2.5 (2.5 µ’den küçük parçacıklar), 7.8 ton O3, 783 kg NO2, 494 kg SO2, 144 kg CO’ i havadan uzaklaştırdığını göstermiştir. Bu çalışma ile yeryüzü şekilleri ile ilişkili olarak havada biriken kirleticilerin dağılmasının güç olduğu Çorum gibi illerde park ve bahçelerin varlığının önemi ve yeni yeşil alanların oluşturulmasının gerekliliği vurgulanmıştır., Currently, air pollution has been one of the most important environmental problems with its negative impacts on human health and life. The precautions that can be taken against air pollution is very crucial particularly in urban areas with dense human population. It has been known that tree and bush cover as a regulating ecosystem service can increase air quality. In this study, I investigated the amount of air pollutants that are removed from the air by trees and bushes using i-Tree Canopy in Bahcelievler, a 1643 ha district of Corum, a city that is suffering from dense air pollution. The results showed that only % 14.8 of the land is covered by the trees and bushes in the study area. They remove annually 2.6 ton PM10 (particles smaller than 10 µ and bigger than 2.5 µ), 379 kg PM2.5 (particles smaller than 2.5 µ), 7.8 ton O3, 783 kg NO2, 494 kg SO2, 144 kg CO from the air. I underlined the importance of current parks and the necessity of extra green spaces for the cities in which dispersion of the air pollutants is difficult because of the topography such as Corum.

research Abstract: The population trend of the red-backed shrike, Lanius collurio, is declining in its range. We studied the breeding biology of this species in the 2011 and 2012 breeding seasons in the north of Turkey. Our study site was an area of approximately 650 ha in the Kızılırmak Delta. Population density was 2.4 breeding pairs (bp)/10 ha and 2.7 bp/10 ha in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Blackberry bushes were used most frequently as nest sites (66%). The mean height of the nests from the ground was 125 ± 39 cm. The mean height of nest plants was 224 cm ± 76 cm. Nest height and nest plant height were positively correlated. We present an inequality of breeding parameters in the two successive breeding seasons. In 2011, the red-backed shrikes arrived at their breeding sites later, began to breed later, laid smaller clutches, and were less productive than in 2012. The main factor of the nest failures was nest predation in the study area. We detected normal second broods (six pairs) and it seems that this case was not exceptional. The Kızılırmak Delta is an important breeding area of the red-backed shrike population and more comprehensive studies are required.

We investigated the breeding performance and nest site properties of the red-backed shrikes in a small population in Nallihan Bird Sanctuary in Turkey. We carried out the field studies during the 2006 and 2007 breeding seasons. We monitored 12 nests of 7 breeding pairs in the 2007 breeding season. Most of the territories were near the Aladag Stream-Riparian Habitat. The distance between the nests were 110 ± 20 m. The red-backed shrikes built their nests in the thorny bushes at the average height of 80 ± 32.5 cm above the ground. Only one pair could raise fledglings within the monitored pairs. Four Nests were predated during the incubation and four nests were predated during nestling stage in the 2007 breeding season. Yet, the previous year we had detected at least one fledgling within 6 of the 8 territories. We estimated that this small popula- tion had suffered from high nest predation at the Nallihan Bird Sanctuary after a successful breeding season. Long-term studies are required to obtain more detailed information about the populations of the red-backed shrikes in Turkey., B u çalışmada, kızılsırtlı örümcekkuşunun Nallıhan Kuş Cenneti’ndeki küçük bir populasyonunun üreme performansı ve yuva yeri özellikleri araştırılmıştır. Saha çalışmaları 2006 ve 2007 üreme dönemlerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. 2007 üreme döneminde 7 üreme çiftine ait 12 yuva takip edilmiştir. Teritoryumların büyük çoğunluğunun Aladağ Çayı riperyan habitatında bulunduğu kaydedilmiştir. Yuvalar arasındaki mesafe 110 ± 20 m’dir. Kızılsırtlı örümcekkuşları yuvalarını dikenli çalılara, yerden ortalama 80 ± 32.5 cm yüksekliğe yapmışlardır. Takip edilen çiftlerden yalnızca bir tanesi kanatlanmış yavrular yetiştirebilmiştir. 2007 üreme döneminde dört yuva inkübasyon, dört yuva da yavru aşamasında predasyona uğramıştır. Buna rağmen, bir önceki üreme döneminde 8 teritoryumun içinde 6 tanesinde kanatlanmış yavrular gözlenmiştir. Bu küçük populasyonun başarılı bir üreme dönemi sonrası maruz kaldığı yoğun yuva predasyonu nedeniyle başarısız olduğu tahmin edilmektedir. Türkiye’deki kızılsırtlı örümcekkuşu populasyonları hakkında daha ayrıntılı bilgi sahibi olmak için uzun dönemli çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır
