designdice™ is a tool to help any creative process, encouraging lateral thought, idea generation and problem-solving. It has grown out of a deep belief in the value of encouraging creativity in others, and improves in application the more you use it.\ud \ud Created in-part in response to the significant shift in student demographic (particularly the decline of key craft & conceptual skills), the dice empower a student to ‘own’ their creative process more fully, engage in the ‘craft’ of thinking more practically (with lots of drawing & writing), and importantly make far more efficient use of their time.\ud \ud The presentation & subsequent workshop will allow colleagues to practically engage with the dice in a studio environment (as students would use them), and participate in an open discussion on some of the applications used successfully during its trials.

Central to any graphic design education is the teaching of a design (or creative) process as an aid to problem-solving. This study draws upon experimental workshops within design education, together with current thinking from the broader arts, emotional psychology and the brain sciences, to explore the idea of repositioning process as the ‘main event’ – rather than it being a means-to-an-end. The study sought to frame learning experiences that enabled students to consciously become the object of their own study; including themes that explored ‘personal identity’, ‘dualism’, ‘mind-wandering’ and ‘habit’ as mechanisms to enhance our creative capacity, and evidenced significant improvements in the students’ confidence, dexterity and working methodologies (including the elusive ‘risk’ and ‘play’). The emerging conclusions propose key anchors (‘dissociative creativity’, ‘process as the main event’, ‘collaboration’ and ‘immersion’) that we believe ought to be central to the development of any new teaching (esp. within graphic design).\ud \ud Keywords: Design, Education, Process, Creativity, Risk\ud \ud Full paper. They have been developed out of experiences as a graphic designer & lecturer over the past 25 years, and from a simple belief in the value of encouraging creativity to grow in other people…’\ud \ud Andy will be talking through how the designdice™ project evolved, his belief in the importance of teaching what we practice, and practicing what we teach, as well as the benefits of embracing unfamiliar disciplines, the shifts in education, crowdfunding, and surrounding yourself with people who will champion your creative ambitions.

First organized in 2013, the International Design Week Werkwoche was launched by the Faculty of Design of the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences. The idea was to highlight the role of design and its related fields and to create a platform for national and international exchange.\ud \ud Now the Werkwoche 2016, has become a vibrant five-day-event with the focus on current and future design trends. Together with 15 designers and lecturers from eight countries we explore, discuss and showcase the importance of design as an innovative tool, we foster exchange and we raise awareness of the vital role design plays in our lives. Students can benefit from a stunning range of workshops, lectures, talks and an exhibition.\ud \ud All German and international students are very welcome to take part. [STÖRUNG] – Disruption / Design / Process\ud \ud We all have our own ‘design process’ – the way we go about doing what we do as designers. Most of the time, our energies are spent working subjectively within this process (discover, define, develop, deliver, etc.) in pursuit of an idea that is then realised and published for the world to see. However, it is less common for us to take the time to step back from the ‘doing’ of design, and to objectively ask questions about ‘what’ or ‘why’ we design a particular way.\ud \ud Werkwoche: International Design Week\ud 14. – 18. November 2016\ud \ud [STÖRUNG] 5 DAY WORKSHOP \ud The [ S T Ö R U N G ] workshop is an intensive opportunity for you to consider the ‘what’ and ‘why’ behind your existing design process, and to look for ways of building on and developing new patterns of working. You will spend time considering the things you already know and utilise; Who am I? How do I work? What we know about processes already? Etc.), some of the barriers we face to our creativity (What gets in the way?), and then move through less familiar (and sometimes uncomfortable) experiences that consider emotion, language and expression as tools for new thinking. \ud \ud Focus: Design & Creative Processes / Idea Generation / Design Thinking\ud \ud [STÖRUNG] PUBLIC LECTURE \ud We now have access to more tools and technologies than at any other point in history and, if you believe the hype, ‘anyone’ can be a designer. However, beyond the software and increasing tendency towards visual pastiche, the central component of design – that of the creative ‘idea’ still remains elusive to many. In a world where change is the only constant, the need for designers who can move beyond themselves and continually re-invent the way they work has never been so important. This talk will look at some of the history, tools and methods either used or championed by staff at Falmouth University to celebrate the notion of ‘design process’ alongside that of ‘design artefact’.
