The COVID-19 pandemic altered course delivery in higher education at many universities. This article evaluates the differences between student experiences in the fall 2019 semester (pre-pandemic) and those during the fall 2020 semester (pandemic) within a multidisciplinary, project-based introductory statistics course. Results indicated that there were minimal differences in student experiences of this course based on delivery mode (in person vs. online).

Eucalyptus species are known to produce metabolites such as essential oils (EOs) that play an important role in the control of weeds, pests and phytopathogenic fungi. The aims of this study were as follows: (i) to determine the chemical composition of the EOs derived from eight Eucalyptus species growing in Tunisia, and (ii) to study their possible antifungal and herbicidal activities. EOs were obtained by hydrodistillation from the dried leaves of eight Eucalyptus species, namely, E. angulosa, E. cladocalyx, E. diversicolor, E. microcoryx, E. ovata, E. resinifera, E. saligna and E. sargentii, and the determination of their composition was achieved by GC and GC-MS. The EOs antifungal activities were tested against four Fusarium strains, and the EOs herbicidal properties were evaluated on the germination and seedling growth of three annual weeds (Trifolium campestre, Lolium rigidum and Sinapis arvensis) and three cultivated crop species (Lepidium sativum, Raphanus sativus and Triticum durum). The EO yields ranged between 0.12 and 1.32%. The most abundant components found were eucalyptol, α-pinene, p-cymene, trans-pinocarveol, α-terpineol and globulol. All EOs showed significant antifungal activity against the four phytopathogenic Fusarium strains. E. cladocalyx EO exhibited the highest level of antifungal activity, and the greatest inhibition of seed germination was obtained even at lowest concentrations used. These findings suggested that E. resinifera, E. ovata and E. cladocalyx EOs could have applications in agriculture as possible biopesticides, as Fusarium antagonists and as bioherbicides.

BackgroundSevere eosinophilic asthma (SEA) is often linked to a dysregulation in the Interleukin-(IL)-5 axis. Mepolizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody, reduces eosinophils by directly binging to IL-5, potentially restoring homeostatic eosinophil biology, with a significant impact on quality of life, acute exacerbations and oral corticosteroids (OCS) elimination in SEA patients. While its short- and middle-term effects are well described, no study has so far investigated its long-lasting effects in SEA patients. The aim of our study was therefore to explore the effects of a long-term, six-year continuous treatment with mepolizumab on clinical control and clinical remission in a cohort of SEA patients.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective review of clinical records of patients who were prescribed mepolizumab between June 2017 and April 2018. We collected demographical, functional, and clinical data from visits performed at baseline and then at the specified timepoints and checked if patients had reached clinical remission after 6 years. We assessed asthma control test (ACT), exacerbation rate, and OCS elimination dose at 6 years. Clinical Remission (CR) was defined on the basis of the elimination of OCS and the contemporary presence of all the following: 1) stable lung function; 2) no exacerbation in the previous 12 months; 3) acceptable symptom control (ACT ≥ 20).ResultsOf 86 patients screened, 62 were included in the final analysis. Our study suggests that mepolizumab is effective and well tolerated after a six-year course of continuous treatment in patients with SEA. We reported a prevalence of 28 (46.8%) patients who reached complete CR at 72 months from the treatment start. 75% of patients eliminated the maintenance OCS already after 1 year of treatment; this proportion reached the 87% within the sixth year of treatment.ConclusionMepolizumab proved to be effective in real-life after 6 years of treatment, inducing a complete clinical remission in the 46.8% of patients, with sustained improvements in quality of life, exacerbation rate, OCS intake and lung function.

Many plants can produce essential oils (EOs), having various biological properties. This study evaluated the antioxidant, anti-enzymatic and antimicrobial effects of the EOs derived from leaves of Eucalyptus cladocalyx, E. angulosa, E. microcorys, E. ovata, E. diversicolor, E. saligna, E. sargentii and E. resinifera. The antioxidant activity of the EOs was carried out with three different methods (ABTS, DPPH and FRAP). In addition, their anti-colinesterases, anti α-amylase and anti α-glucosidase effects were assessed by spectrophotometric assays. The antimicrobial activities were tested against six phytopathogenic bacterial strains, including two G + ve (Bacillus mojavensis and Clavibacter michiganensis) and four G-ve (Pseudomonas fluorescence, P. syringae, Xanthomonas campestris and E. coli). The current study has also investigated the inhibition of biofilm formation and the possible effect on bacterial cells biofilm metabolism of three Gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Acinetobacter baumannii) and two Gram-positive pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes). The ABTS and DPPH tests indicated that E. diversicolor and E. saligna EOs showed high antioxidant activities, whereas FRAP test suggested that E. diversicolor EO exhibited the better antioxidant activity. E. resinifera and E. ovata EOs were the most active against cholinesterases instead E. ovata and E. sargentii EOs were more active against enzymes involved in diabetes. Antibacterial assays revealed that E. ovata and E. saligna EOs possess significant activity closely to tetracycline. Whereas, the antifungal assay revealed that all EOs have effectively suppressed the tested fungal growth. E. saligna EO showed substantial efficacy inhibiting both the mature biofilm (85.40 %) and metabolic activities (89.80 %) of L. monocytogenes. These results demonstrate the wide range of possible uses for Eucalyptus EOs in both agriculture and medicine fields, suggesting potential uses as strong antibiofilm agents and for biocontrol of phytopathogens.

Pityriasis versicolor is characterized clinically by slightly scaly, hyper- or hypopigmented macules usually located on the chest, shoulders, back and arms. Rare cases of atypical locations of pityriasis versicolor have been described, such as groins, penis and perineum. We present three cases of pityriasis versicolor located exclusively on the submammary folds, pubis and inguinal folds (the latter in an 11-year-old girl), respectively. In consideration of both location and clinical presentation of pityriasis versicolor in these three patients, we think that the diagnosis of “erythrasmoid” pityriasis versicolor is acceptable. Differential diagnosis with erythrasma must be taken into consideration. Mycological and bacteriological examinations are therefore necessary in order to make a correct diagnosis and specific therapy.

Phytophotodermatitis is a condition caused by contamination of the skin with phototoxic plant substances, followed by exposure to ultraviolet rays. Ficus carica L 1753, belonging to the Moraceae family, can be responsible for acute photodermatitis. We present five cases of photodermatitis caused by contact with Ficus carica L and subsequent exposure to sunlight. A histopathologic study and review of the literature are included.

Over the last decades, consumer has evolved becoming increasingly responsible, showing a preference for those foods having a positive impact on health, society and environment. In particular, consumers are showing an increasing interest in food innovation and towards foods capable to produce health benefits, such as enriched foods, which can be considered as functional foods. As consumer acceptance is crucial to the success of food innovation, this study aims to investigate consumers’ acceptance for two innovative enriched foods: extra virgin olive oil enriched with longchain Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), and a lutein-enriched durum wheat pasta. To achieve study's aim, a choice experiment has been realized, also to detect consumers’ WTP. The analysis involved 445 Italian consumers. Results show that price represents the attribute that most of all is able to affect consumers’ utility, followed by the presence of the functional element. Furthermore, the analysis also shows consumers’ WTP a price premium for the functional attribute, for both products considered in the study. Such results highlight useful insights for practitioners and outlines new perspectives for future research.

Despite the growing attention paid by consumers and policy makers to health and sustainability issues, contribution analyzing consumers attitude towards both health related and sustainability attributes of foods are lacking. This study aims to investigate consumers’ preferences and willingness to pay for sustainable functional foods, in particular snack bars with high anti-oxidant value and made with a sustainable production process. Results show consumers’ willingness to pay a price premium of 0.30€ for the purchase of such foods. The amount of price premium increases as income increases. Furthermore, women, health-conscious individuals and those more likely to try new foods are willing to pay more for the purchase of sustainable functional snack bars. The preferred attributes are those related to the healthiness, while those related to the sustainability are not considered relevant. The present study enriches literature on functional foods, also providing insights for policy makers and practitioners.

This paper recommends end to end quality assurance methods and quality control tests for High Frequency Radar Networks. We focus on the network that is operated by the Mid Atlantic Regional Association Coastal Ocean Observing System (MARACOOS). The network currently consists of 38 radars making real-time measurements of the surface currents over the continental shelf for a variety of applications including search and rescue planning, oil spill trajectory modelling and providing a transport context for marine biodiversity observing networks. MARACOOS has been delivering surface current measurements to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) since May 2009. Data quality is important for all applications; however, since the USCG uses this surface current information to plan life-saving missions, delivery of the best quality data is crucial. We have mapped the components of the HF radar data processing chain onto the data levels presented in the NASA Earth Science Reference Handbook and have applied quality assurance and quality control techniques at each data level to achieve the highest quality data. There are approximately 400 High Frequency radars (HFRs) deployed globally and the presented techniques can provide a foundation for data quality checks and standardization of the data collected by the large number of systems operating today.

The Eucalyptus genus, characterized by its imposing stature and fragrant foliage, has been a source of fascination for humanity over the centuries. The focus of the present investigation was directed towards the essentials oils (EOs) of five Eucalyptus trees cultivated in Tunisia. The GC-MS analysis unveiled unique compositional profiles, a finding substantiated by both Hierarchical Clustering Analysis (HCA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) conducted on the leaves EOs. These analyses resulted in the formation of discrete HCA clades, delineating 23 significant components. Notably, the percentage of eucalyptol emerged as the pivotal factor demarcating the separation between three distinct groups. The statistical analysis revealed a dose-dependent relationship in both phytotoxicity evaluation and antibacterial activity. The EOs from Eucalyptus loxophleba and E. salubris exhibited the highest phytotoxicity, inhibiting radical elongation and germination of various seeds, especially Sinapis arvensis and Raphanus sativus. The antimicrobial assessment demonstrated significant inhibitory effects of the EOs on bacterial strains, with MIC values spanning from 14 to exceeding 50 mg/ml. The EOs also affected biofilm formation and cellular metabolism, displaying varied efficacy among different Eucalyptus species against some bacterial strains. The EOs exhibited selective inhibition against acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), α-amylase, and α-glucosidase. E. campaspe EO showed the highest AChE activity, while E. loxophleba and E. salubris EOs were most potent toward α-amylase. E. loxophleba EO demonstrated notable activity against α-glucosidase. Overall, these findings provide important data about the diverse biological activities of Eucalyptus EOs, suggesting potential applications in agriculture, medicine, and pharmacy.

Dietary patterns high in fat and sugar promote brain dysfunction, but the preventive efficacy of probiotics has been little explored. This study investigated whether the administration of Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 (L.reuteri; 108 CFU/day) counteracts cognitive dysfunction and brain redox unbalance induced in male Wistar rats fed a western diet (WD) for 8 weeks.The results showed that L. reuteri prevented the WD-associated impairment in brain memory function, as evaluated by NOR test, and consistently increased specific molecular markers of synaptic plasticity. The condition of oxidative stress induced by WD, namely enhanced oxidation to proteins and lipids, increased oxidants-producing enzymes as well as reduced nuclear Nrf2 and Nrf2-dependent antioxidant enzymes, was ameliorated by the probiotic. Unexpectedly, mitochondria displayed a diet-induced increase in oxidative capacity, not modified by the probiotic. A protective effect of the probiotic on gut absorption of fructose and its further delivery to brain was evidenced as mechanism involved in cortex redox homeostasis. These findings evidence the potential utility of L. reuteri against WD-induced brain dysfunction and implicate the Nrf2 pathway as a potential mechanism for this effect.

Quality education represents one of the leading goals among the United Nations sustainable goals and its centrality is internationally recognized. The paper, after reviewing how to reach quality education and which competencies students should reach, presents the Scientix project. With a participatory action research and peer-led experiential learning approach, a number of experiences are shared as a proof of concept about educational intervention coupling research and practices. The experiences cover all school levels and aspects spanning Information Literacies related to online inquiry process and source validation and verification; Data Literacy and its importance for active and critical participation in society; Digital Citizenship and sustainable use of technologies and digital civic engagement and technology use related to Computational Thinking and coding. The work lays the basis for the assessment of key factors in learning resource design and key educational practices with the greatest positive impact on the students’ learning path.

The social dimension of sustainability in the agri-food sector is gaining more and more attention from both scholars and policymakers. In Europe, among different countries, Italy stood out for the active role played in including social conditionality in the Common Agricultural Policy. Despite such interest, there is still confusion concerning the concept of social sustainability, and tools aimed at measuring the social performance of farms are still lacking. The current study aims to identify indicators to measure the social sustainability of farm practices in the Italian agri-food system. The methodology included an analysis of the most relevant literature, legislation, and guidelines to identify five macro-areas of interest, which served as the foundation for developing theoretical social sustainability key performance indicators. The results of this study provide useful insights for both practitioners and policymakers to develop strategies and policies focused on social sustainability.

IntroductionPlastic pollution has surged due to increased human consumption and disposal of plastic products. Microbial communities capable of utilizing plastic as a carbon source may play a crucial role in degrading and consuming environmental plastic. In this study, we investigated the potential of a modified Winogradsky column (WC) to enrich Connecticut landfill soil for plastic-degrading bacteria and genes.MethodsBy filling WCs with landfill soil and inorganic Bushnell Haas medium, and incorporating polyethylene (PE) strips at different soil layers, we aimed to identify bacterial taxa capable of degrading PE. We employed high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing to identify the microbes cultivated on the plastic strips and the intervening landfill soil. We used PICRUSt2 to estimate the functional attributes of each community from 16S rRNA sequences.Results and discussionAfter 12 months of incubation, distinct colors were observed along the WC layers, indicating successful cultivation. Sequencing revealed significant differences in bacterial communities between the plastic strips and the intervening landfill-soil habitats, including increased abundance of the phyla Verrucomicrobiota and Pseudomonadota (néé Proteobacteria) on the strips. Based on inferred genomic content, the most highly abundant proteins in PE strip communities tended to be associated with plastic degradation pathways. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA sequences showed novel unclassified phyla and genera enriched on the plastic strips. Our findings suggest PE-supplemented Winogradsky columns can enrich for plastic-degrading microbes, offering insights into bioremediation strategies.

Background Despite longstanding epidemiologic data on the association between increased serum triglycerides and cardiovascular events, the exact level at which risk begins to rise is unclear. The Working Group on Uric Acid and Cardiovascular Risk of the Italian Society of Hypertension has conceived a protocol aimed at searching for the prognostic cutoff value of triglycerides in predicting cardiovascular events in a large regional‐based Italian cohort. Methods and Results Among 14 189 subjects aged 18 to 95 years followed‐up for 11.2 (5.3–13.2) years, the prognostic cutoff value of triglycerides, able to discriminate combined cardiovascular events, was identified by means of receiver operating characteristic curve. The conventional (150 mg/dL) and the prognostic cutoff values of triglycerides were used as independent predictors in separate multivariable Cox regression models adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, total and high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, serum uric acid, arterial hypertension, diabetes, chronic renal disease, smoking habit, and use of antihypertensive and lipid‐lowering drugs. During 139 375 person‐years of follow‐up, 1601 participants experienced cardiovascular events. Abstract Introduction The classical management of melanoma is surgery, but this can be challenging because of several factors, such as age, body area, lesion size, among others. Topical imiquimod may be a therapeutic option for the treatment of melanoma in situ and lentigo maligna melanoma due to its efficacy, tolerability, and non-invasiveness. The purpose of this systematic review is to assemble current evidence on the treatment of non-metastatic melanoma with topical imiquimod. Methods The PubMed/MEDLINE and Cochrane Library databases were searched as the primary sources using the main search terms “imiquimod” combined with “lentigo maligna” and “melanoma” with the command “AND.” Articles were identified, screened, and extracted for relevant data, following the PRISMA guidelines. Results A total of 87 studies covering 1803 lesions treated with imiquimod cream were identified and included in this sytematic review. Forty-nine studies were case reports, 16 were retrospective analyses, 3 were open label trials, six were case series; one study was a controlled randomized trial, one was a randomized trial, and one was a single-arm phase III trial. Because of the high number of low-evidence studies, the overall risk of bias resulted high. In 55 studies, imiquimod 5% was used in monotherapy as the primary treatment; only in one study was imiquimod 3.75% introduced. In most cases, the topical treatment was applied once daily, with the exception of nine cases where an increased daily dosage was prescribed. The total duration of the treatment regimen was extremely variable and depended on body area and tolerability, with differences among patients of the same study. In six studies, imiquimod was used as neoadjuvant therapy before the surgical excision, and in 11 studies it was used after surgery as complementary or adjuvant therapy. In total, 1133 of the 1803 (62.8%) lesions were reported to be cleared after the treatment, taking into account that not all of the patients completed the treatment. Of these 1133 lesions, histological clearance was achieved in 645 (56.9%) lesions and clinical clearance only was achieved in 490 (43.2%) lesions; relapse occurred in 107 lesions. Conclusions The heterogeneity of the studies included in this systematic review precludes the drawing of any relevant conclusions regarding the application of imiquimod. Its efficacy in melanoma in situ and lentigo maligna melanoma has been demonstrated, but further evidence from controlled studies concerning the modalities is missing.

The objective of this study was to investigate the longitudinal association of metabolically healthy overweight/obese adults with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and the effect of LDL-cholesterol levels on this association. This study was conducted with 15,904 participants from the URRAH study grouped according to BMI and metabolic status. Healthy metabolic status was identified with and without including LDL-cholesterol. The risk of MACE during 11.8 years of follow-up was evaluated with multivariable Cox regressions. Among the participants aged p = 0.012). However, when LDL-cholesterol < 130 mg/dL was included in the definition of healthy metabolic status, no increase in risk was found in the overweight/obese adults compared to the normal weight individuals (hazard ratio 0.70 (0.07–6.71, p = 0.75). The present data show that the risk of MACE is increased in metabolically healthy overweight/obese individuals identified according to standard criteria. However, when LDL-cholesterol is included in the definition, metabolically healthy individuals who are overweight/obese have no increase in risk.

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS), also known as Gorlin syndrome (GS), is a genetic disorder characterized by the development of multiple cutaneous BCCs due to mutations in the hedgehog signaling pathway. The use of hedgehog pathway inhibitors—vismodegib and sonidegib—has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy for managing BCCs in individuals with GS. In a retrospective study conducted between March 2012 and January 2024, a cohort of 16 Gorlin syndrome patients who received treatment with either sonidegib or vismodegib were analyzed. The primary objectives of the study were to evaluate the efficacy, safety profile, and duration of response to oral hedgehog inhibitors in this patient population. The study assessed various parameters, including the number of new BCCs that developed before and after treatment initiation, the duration and sustainability of treatment responses, as well as the incidence of adverse effects associated with hedgehog inhibitor therapy. The findings of the study revealed that sustained treatment with hedgehog inhibitors could effectively suppress the progression of both new and existing BCCs. Furthermore, the results indicated that sonidegib exhibited superior efficacy and safety compared to vismodegib in the treatment of BCCs in individuals with GS. Notably, adjustments to the administration schedule of sonidegib were found to improve tolerability without compromising therapeutic efficacy, potentially leading to prolonged durations of treatment response and disease control.

High levels of serum uric acid (SUA) and triglycerides (TG) might promote high-cardiovascular-risk phenotypes, including subclinical atherosclerosis. An interaction between plaques xanthine oxidase (XO) expression, SUA, and HDL-C has been recently postulated. Subjects from the URic acid Right for heArt Health (URRAH) study with carotid ultrasound and without previous cardiovascular diseases (CVD) (n = 6209), followed over 20 years, were included in the analysis. Hypertriglyceridemia (hTG) was defined as TG ≥ 150 mg/dL. Higher levels of SUA (hSUA) were defined as ≥5.6 mg/dL in men and 5.1 mg/dL in women. A carotid plaque was identified in 1742 subjects (28%). SUA and TG predicted carotid plaque (HR 1.09 [1.04–1.27], p < 0.001 and HR 1.25 [1.09–1.45], p < 0.001) in the whole population, independently of age, sex, diabetes, systolic blood pressure, HDL and LDL cholesterol and treatment. Four different groups were identified (normal SUA and TG, hSUA and normal TG, normal SUA and hTG, hSUA and hTG). The prevalence of plaque was progressively greater in subjects with normal SUA and TG (23%), hSUA and normal TG (31%), normal SUA and hTG (34%), and hSUA and hTG (38%) (Chi-square, 0.0001). Logistic regression analysis showed that hSUA and normal TG [HR 1.159 (1.002 to 1.341); p = 0.001], normal SUA and hTG [HR 1.305 (1.057 to 1.611); p = 0.001], and the combination of hUA and hTG [HR 1.539 (1.274 to 1.859); p = 0.001] were associated with a higher risk of plaque. Our findings demonstrate that SUA is independently associated with the presence of carotid plaque and suggest that the combination of hyperuricemia and hypertriglyceridemia is a stronger determinant of carotid plaque than hSUA or hTG taken as single risk factors. The association between SUA and CVD events may be explained in part by a direct association of UA with carotid plaques.

Background: The differential diagnosis of atypical melanocytic skin lesions localized on palms and soles represents a diagnostic challenge: indeed, this spectrum encompasses atypical nevi (AN) and early-stage melanomas (EN) displaying overlapping clinical and dermoscopic features. This often generates unnecessary excisions or delayed diagnosis. Investigations to date were mostly carried out in specific populations, focusing either on acrolentiginous melanomas or morphologically typical acquired nevi. Aims: To investigate the dermoscopic features of atypical melanocytic palmoplantar skin lesions (aMPPLs) as evaluated by variously skilled dermatologists and assess their concordance; to investigate the variations in dermoscopic appearance according to precise location on palms and soles; to detect the features with the strongest association with malignancy/benignity in each specific site. Methods: A dataset of 471 aMPPLs—excised in the suspect of malignancy—was collected from 10 European Centers, including a standardized dermoscopic picture (17×) and lesion/patient metadata. An anatomical classification into 17 subareas was considered, along with an anatomo-functional classification considering pressure/friction, (4 macroareas). A total of 156 participants (95 with less than 5 years of experience in dermoscopy and 61 with ≥than 5 years) from 17 countries performed a blinded tele-dermoscopic pattern analysis over 20 cases through a specifically realized web platform. Results: A total of 37,440 dermoscopic evaluations were obtained over 94 (20%) EM and 377 (80%) AN. The areas with the highest density of EM compared to AN were the heel (40.3% EM/aMPPLs) of the sole and the “fingers area” (33%EM/aMPPLs) of the palm, both characterized by intense/chronic traumatism/friction. Globally, the recognition rates of 12 dermoscopic patterns were non statistically different between 95 dermatology residents and 61 specialists: aMPPLs in the plantar arch appeared to be the most “difficult” to diagnose, the parallel ridge pattern was poorly recognized and irregular/regular fibrillar patterns often misinterpreted. Regarding the aMPPL of the “heel area”, the parallel furrow pattern (p = 0.014) and lattice-like pattern (p = 0.001) significantly discriminated benign cases, while asymmetry of colors (p = 0.002) and regression structures (p = 0.025) malignant ones. In aMPPLs of the “plantar arch”, the lattice-like pattern (p = 0.012) was significant for benignity and asymmetry of structures, asymmetry of colors, regression structures, or blue-white veil for malignancy. In palmar lesions, no data were significant in the discrimination between malignant and benign aMPPLs. Conclusions: This study highlights that (i) the pattern analysis of aMPPLs is challenging for both experienced and novice dermoscopists; (ii) the histological distribution varies according to the anatomo-functional classification; and (iii) different dermoscopic patterns are able to discriminate malignant from benign aMPPLs within specific plantar and palmar areas.

The aim of this research was to optimize the production process of fermented gluten-free quinoa bread. To this end, the effect of different hydrocolloids on the technological, fermentative, and nutritional properties of quinoa-based gluten-free doughs and breads was evaluated. For this purpose, 3% of four different hydrocolloids (sodium alginate, k-carrageenan, xanthan gum, and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)) were used in gluten-free doughs composed of 50% quinoa flour, 20% rice flour, and 30% potato starch. The rheological and fermentative properties of the doughs were evaluated, as well as the chemical composition, specific volume, crust and crumb color, and alveolar structure profile of gluten-free breads. The results highlighted the differences in dough rheology during mixing and fermentation of the doughs. In particular, HPMC showed a good gas retention (93%) during the fermentation of quinoa dough by registering the highest maximum dough development height (Hm). The gluten-free quinoa breads obtained were characterized by significantly different quality parameters (p < 0.05). The use of 3% HPMC resulted in breads with the lowest baking loss, the highest volume, and the most open crumb structure.

Honey can beneficially act against different human diseases, helping our body to improve its health. The aim of the present study was first to increase knowledge of some biochemical characteristics (amount and composition of polyphenols and volatile organic compounds, vitamin C content) of five Italian legume honeys (alfalfa, astragalus, carob, indigo, and sainfoin). Furthermore, we evaluated their potential health properties by studying their antioxidant and in vitro anti-inflammatory activities and in vitro inhibitory effects on three enzymes involved in neurodegenerative diseases (acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, and tyrosinase). Alfalfa honey showed the highest total polyphenol content (TPC) (408 μg g−1 of product). Indigo honey showed the lowest TPC (110 μg g−1 of product). The antioxidant activity was noteworthy, especially in the case of sainfoin honey (IC50 = 6.08 mg), which also exhibited excellent inhibitory action against butyrylcholinesterase (74%). Finally, the correlation between the biochemical and functional results allowed us to identify classes of molecules, or even single molecules, present in these five honeys, which are capable of influencing the properties indicated above.

Purpose: Assessment is a crucial skill for speech-language pathologists, who rely on standardized tests to identify characteristics of speech, language, hearing, literacy, and related skill sets. Training in assessment administration is an integral part of graduate education that lays the foundation for appropriate use of these tools. Teaching students to administer standardized assessments is time intensive, can vary depending on student learning pace, and involves both general and test-specific knowledge. The current pilot study investigated the effectiveness of researcher-developed and scalable online training modules for beginning and advanced graduate students for knowledge and self-efficacy outcomes. Method: Graduate students (n = 61) across four cohorts (two beginning and two advanced) were trained using online, asynchronous assessment training modules. The modules addressed the administration of standardized assessments using written tutorials, video demonstrations, and quizzes. Students completed pre- and posttests on knowledge and self-efficacy for administering and scoring the trained assessments before and after the online training modules. Results: We found significant pretest to posttest gains in specific assessment-related knowledge for beginning and advanced groups. Following completion of the training modules, beginning graduate students demonstrated increased self-efficacy for general assessment principles, whereas advanced graduate students started and remained high in self-efficacy at posttest. Conclusions: Using researcher-developed online training modules, both beginning and advanced graduate students improved knowledge for assessment skills. These training modules can be used as a model for developing teaching materials across a range of assessments and related topics that are scalable in the context of remote teaching and learning.

Gefitinib is a selective tyrosine kinase inhibitor of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) used for the treatment of malignant neoplasms. The most frequent skin complication during gefitinib therapy is an acneiform papulopustular eruption, usually distributed in the seborrheic areas but occasionally widespread. We report a patient with erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp, a neutrophil-mediated skin disease presenting with sterile pustules evolving into erosions and crusts on the scalp, during treatment with the EGFR inhibitor gefitinib for lung cancer. A literature review of the drug-induced cases of this rare entity is provided.

Acquired dermal melanocytoses include pigmented lesions with a clear late onset, histologically characterized by the presence of melanocytes in the dermis. In this report, we describe a rare case of acquired unilateral facial melanocytosis, also called nevus of Sun, in a Caucasian woman.

Abstract We studied the total polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamin C, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of six Citrus monofloral honey, and the in vitro inhibitory effect against cholinesterases and tyrosinase. Finally, we assessed their effect against the biofilm of some pathogenic bacteria. Lime honey showed the best antioxidant activity and the highest content of polyphenols and vitamin C. Lemon and tangerine honey contained almost exclusively flavonoids. Lemon honey better preserved the bovine serum albumin against denaturation (IC50 = 48.47 mg). Honeys inhibited acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, and tyrosinase up to 12.04% (tangerine), 19.11% (bergamot), and 94.1% (lemon), respectively. Lime and clementine honey better inhibited the Listeria monocytogenes biofilm. Bergamot honey acted mainly against the Staphylococcus aureus and Acinetobacter baumannii biofilm; bergamot and tangerine honey inhibited the Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm particularly. Bergamot, clementine, and tangerine honey acted against Escherichia coli sessile cell metabolism. This Citrus honey exhibited in vitro prospective health benefits and is applicable for future in vivo studies.

Abstract Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs normal brain development and socio-cognitive abilities. The pathogenesis of this condition points out the involvement of genetic and environmental factors during in-utero life. Placenta, as an interface tissue between mother and fetus, provides developing fetus requirements and exposes it to maternal environment as well. Therefore, the alteration of DNA methylation as epigenetic consequence of gene-environmental interaction in the placenta could shed light on ASD pathogenesis. In this study, we reviewed the current findings on placental methylation status and its association with ASD. Differentially methylated regions (DMRs) in ASD-developing placenta were found to be mainly enriched in ASD gene loci affecting synaptogenesis, microtubule dynamics, neurogenesis and neuritogenesis. In addition, non-genic DMRs in ASD-placenta proposes an alternative contributing mechanism for ASD development. Our study highlights the importance of placental DNA methylation signature as a biomarker for ASD prediction.

Several studies have detected a direct association between serum uric acid (SUA) and cardiovascular (CV) risk. In consideration that SUA largely depends on kidney function, some studies explored the role of the serum creatinine (sCr)-normalized SUA (SUA/sCr) ratio in different settings. Previously, the URRAH (URic acid Right for heArt Health) Study has identified a cut-off value of this index to predict CV mortality at 5.35 Units. Therefore, given that no SUA/sCr ratio threshold for CV risk has been identified for patients with diabetes, we aimed to assess the relationship between this index and CV mortality and to validate this threshold in the URRAH subpopulation with diabetes; the URRAH participants with diabetes were studied (n = 2230). The risk of CV mortality was evaluated by the Kaplan–Meier estimator and Cox multivariate analysis. During a median follow-up of 9.2 years, 380 CV deaths occurred. A non-linear inverse association between baseline SUA/sCr ratio and risk of CV mortality was detected. In the whole sample, SUA/sCr ratio > 5.35 Units was not a significant predictor of CV mortality in diabetic patients. However, after stratification by kidney function, values > 5.35 Units were associated with a significantly higher mortality rate only in normal kidney function, while, in participants with overt kidney dysfunction, values of SUA/sCr ratio > 7.50 Units were associated with higher CV mortality. The SUA/sCr ratio threshold, previously proposed by the URRAH Study Group, is predictive of an increased risk of CV mortality in people with diabetes and preserved kidney function. While, in consideration of the strong association among kidney function, SUA, and CV mortality, a different cut-point was detected for diabetics with impaired kidney function. These data highlight the different predictive roles of SUA (and its interaction with kidney function) in CV risk, pointing out the difference in metabolic- and kidney-dependent SUA levels also in diabetic individuals.

Background: The differential diagnosis of atypical melanocytic palmoplantar skin lesions (aMPLs) represents a diagnostic challenge, including atypical nevi (AN) and early melanomas (MMs) that display overlapping clinical and dermoscopic features. We aimed to set up a multicentric dataset of aMPL dermoscopic cases paired with multiple anamnestic risk factors and demographic and morphologic data. Methods: Each aMPL case was paired with a dermoscopic and clinical picture and a series of lesion-related data (maximum diameter value; location on the palm/sole in 17 areas; histologic diagnosis; and patient-related data (age, sex, family history of melanoma/sunburns, phototype, pheomelanin, eye/hair color, multiple/dysplastic body nevi, and traumatism on palms/soles). Results: A total of 542 aMPL cases—113 MM and 429 AN—were collected from 195 males and 347 females. No sex prevalence was found for melanomas, while women were found to have relatively more nevi. Melanomas were prevalent on the heel, plantar arch, and fingers in patients aged 65.3 on average, with an average diameter of 17 mm. Atypical nevi were prevalent on the plantar arch and palmar area of patients aged 41.33 on average, with an average diameter of 7 mm. Conclusions: Keeping in mind the risk profile of an aMPL patient can help obtain a timely differentiation between malignant/benign cases, thus avoiding delayed and inappropriate excision, respectively, with the latter often causing discomfort/dysfunctional scarring, especially at acral sites.

Background. Obesity is a prevalent condition associated with various comorbidities, impacting mortality, fertility, and quality of life. Its relationship with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DMII) is well established, with nearly 44% prevalence. Bariatric surgery has proven crucial for treating both obesity and DMII. The comparison between surgical techniques, such as sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB), remains controversial in terms of glycemic control efficacy. This retrospective study aimed to assess DMII remission efficacy between SG and OAGB after 36 months. Methods. From January 2016 to September 2020, 201 patients who underwent SG and OAGB for morbid obesity associated with DMII were accurately followed-up with for 36 months, focusing on %HbA1c, DMII remission, anthropometric results, and nutrient deficiency. Results. Although DMII remission did not exhibit statistical significance between the groups (82% vs. 93%, SG vs. OAGB, p = 0.051), OAGB demonstrated a more robust association with glycemic control (Odds Ratio 0.51) throughout the entire follow-up and yielded superior anthropometric outcomes. Notably, nutrient deficiencies, excluding cholecalciferol, iron, and riboflavin, did not show significant intergroup differences. Conclusions. This study contributes valuable insights into the extended-term efficacy of SG and OAGB in DMII remission. The nuanced findings underscore the multifaceted nature of metabolic outcomes, suggesting that factors beyond weight loss influence diabetes resolution. Larger comparative studies are warranted to comprehensively address this issue.
