Abstract Background Currently, food price inflation is a widespread issue in Bangladesh as well as the rest of the world. Malnutrition is a common issue among children that can have long-lasting effects on their development and overall health. There have been lots of studies conducted to identify the factors responsible for child malnutrition, but inflation is rarely considered a factor in child malnutrition. We aimed to determine the relationship between food price inflation and stunting (Height-for-Age Z-score (HAZ)) in children under five years of age in Bangladesh. Method The study utilized food price data from the World Food Programme database and malnutrition (stunting) information from the 2014 and 2017-18 Bangladesh Demographic Health Surveys (BDHS). This includes the total study period from 2009 to 2018. Food prices were linked to the BDHS dataset using each child’s birth month. For each child, the average food prices from 9 months prior to 5 months post-birth, including their birth month, were recorded to calculate month-to-month inflation. This inflation was computed for rice (coarse), oil, wheat flour, and lentils by comparing the price sum of each item from one month to the previous month and dividing by the total price of the preceding month. A generalized linear regression model was used to assess the relationship between food price inflation and stunting, with stunting as the dependent variable. Other explanatory variables included wealth index, sex of the child, height, weight, mother’s education, respondent’s current pregnancy, and breastfeeding status. Following behavior, an integral part of driving, is vital in describing the longitudinal interaction among vehicles. The traffic composition of the stream influences the following behavior. Several studies have concentrated on developing the following behavioral models; however, very few have addressed the sophistication needed to cater to the pragmatic needs of the present day, inducing the real, naturalistic sense of traffic movement. This study endeavors to review the previous following behavior studies in a different aspect and to find the research gaps accordingly. The study disintegrates the following behavioral models based on three levels of heterogeneous traffic conditions: (1) Homogenous Regular Vehicle (Hom-RV); (2) Heterogenous Regular Vehicle (Het-RV); (3) Heterogenous Connected Automated Vehicles (Het-CAV) (4) Heterogenous Regular Vehicle with Connected Autonomous Vehicles (Het-RV-CAV). The categories mentioned above have been explored in terms of the generalized following behavioral model structure having uniform notations to study input-output variables and their inter-relations, data collected and performance measures of the parameters for different traffic conditions. The in-depth review reveals that incorporating human psychological variables, and intelligent vision-based sensors, thereby upgrading the existing dataset and adding more studies considering Het-RV-CAV, can fill the potential gaps in the current knowledge domain.

Abstract To mitigate the global warming crisis, one of the effective ways is to capture CO2 at an emitting source and inject it underground in saline aquifers, depleted oil and gas reservoirs, or in coal beds. This process is known as carbon capture and storage (CCS). With CCS, CO2 is considered a waste product that has to be disposed of properly, like sewage and other pollutants. While and after CO2 injection, monitoring of the CO2 storage site is necessary to observe CO2 plume movement and detect potential leakage. For CO2 monitoring, various physical property changes are employed to delineate the plume area and migration pathways with their pros and cons. We introduce a new rock physics model to facilitate the time-lapse estimation of CO2 saturation and possible pressure changes within a CO2 storage reservoir based on physical properties obtained from the prestack seismic inversion. We demonstrate that the CO2 plume delineation, saturation, and pressure changes estimations are possible using a combination of Acoustic Impedance (AI) and P- to S-wave velocity ratio (Vp/Vs) inverted from time-lapse or four-dimensional (4D) seismic. We assumed a scenario over a period of 40 years comprising an initial 25 year injection period. Our results show that monitoring the CO2 plume in terms of extent and saturation can be carried out using our rock physics-derived method. The suggested method, without going into the elastic moduli level, handles the elastic property cubes, which are commonly obtained from the prestack seismic inversion. Pressure changes quantification is also possible within un-cemented sands; however, the stress/cementation coefficient in our proposed model needs further study to relate that with effective stress in various types of sandstones. The three-dimensional (3D) seismic usually covers the area from the reservoir's base to the surface making it possible to detect the CO2 plume's lateral and vertical migration. However, the comparatively low resolution of seismic, the inversion uncertainties, lateral mineral, and shale property variations are some limitations, which warrant consideration. This method can also be applied for the exploration and monitoring of hydrocarbon production.

The current study was designed to evaluate the protective effect of fenugreek seed powder against As-induced neurobehavioral and biochemical perturbations using a mouse model. Mice exposed to arsenic at 10 mg/kg body weight showed development of anxiety-like behavior and memory impairment compared to control mice in elevated plus maze and Morris water maze tests, respectively. A significantly decreased acetyl and butyrylcholinesterase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase activities and brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels were found in the brain of arsenic-exposed mice compared to control mice. Interestingly, supplementation of fenugreek seed powder to arsenic-treated mice significantly restored the activity of cholinesterase and antioxidant enzymes (e.g. superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase) as well as brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels in the brain tissue of arsenic-exposed mice. Consequently, reduced anxiety-like behavior, improved learning and memory were observed in fenugreek supplemented arsenic treated mice compared to only arsenic-exposed mice group. Thus, this study suggests that fenugreek seed powder reduces arsenic-induced neurotoxicity in mice.

Arsenic is a potent environmental toxicant and human carcinogen. Skin lesions are the most common manifestations of chronic exposure to arsenic. Advanced-stage skin lesions, particularly hyperkeratosis have been recognized as precancerous diseases. However, the underlying mechanism of arsenic-induced skin lesions remains unknown. Periostin, a matricellular protein, is implicated in the pathogenesis of many forms of skin lesions. The objective of this study was to examine whether periostin is associated with arsenic-induced skin lesions. A total of 442 individuals from low- (n = 123) and high-arsenic exposure areas (n = 319) in rural Bangladesh were evaluated for the presence of arsenic-induced skin lesions (Yes/No). Participants with skin lesions were further categorized into two groups: early-stage skin lesions (melanosis and keratosis) and advanced-stage skin lesions (hyperkeratosis). Drinking water, hair, and nail arsenic concentrations were considered as the participants' exposure levels. The higher levels of arsenic and serum periostin were significantly associated with skin lesions. Causal mediation analysis revealed the significant effect of arsenic on skin lesions through the mediator, periostin, suggesting that periostin contributes to the development of skin lesions. When skin lesion was used as a three-category outcome (none, early-stage, and advanced-stage skin lesions), higher serum periostin levels were significantly associated with both early-stage and advanced-stage skin lesions. Median (IQR) periostin levels were progressively increased with the increasing severity of skin lesions. Furthermore, there were general trends in increasing serum type 2 cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, and eotaxin) and immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels with the progression of the disease. The median (IQR) of IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, eotaxin, and IgE levels were significantly higher in the early-and advanced-stage skin lesions compared to the group of participants without skin lesions. The results of this study suggest that periostin is implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of arsenic-induced skin lesions through the dysregulation of type 2 immune response.

The molecular mechanisms underlying diet-induced obesity are complex and remain unclear. The activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), a xenobiotic sensor, by obesogens may contribute to diet-induced obesity through influences on lipid metabolism and insulin resistance acting at various sites, including adipose tissue. Thus, our hypothesis was that conditional AhR depletion, specifically from mature adipose tissue (CadKO), would improve high-fat diet (HFD)-induced metabolic dysfunction. CadKO protects mice from HFD-induced weight gain. CadKO females eat fewer calories, leading to increased energy expenditure (EE) and improved glucose tolerance on HFD. Our exploration of adipose tissue biology suggests that the depletion of AhR from adipocytes provides female mice with an increased capacity for adipogenesis and lipolysis, allowing for the maintenance of a healthy adipocyte phenotype. The HFD-induced leptin rise was reduced in CadKO females, but the hypothalamic leptin receptor (LepR) was increased in the energy regulatory regions of the hypothalamus, suggesting an increased sensitivity to leptin. The estrogen receptor α (ERα) was higher in CadKO female adipose tissue and the hypothalamus. CadKO males displayed a delayed progression of obesity and insulin resistance. In males, CadKO ameliorated proinflammatory adipocytokine secretion (such as TNFα, IL1β, IL6) and displayed reduced inflammatory macrophage infiltration into adipose depots. Overall, CadKO improves weight control and systemic glucose homeostasis under HFD challenge but to a more profound extent in females. CadKO facilitates a lean phenotype in females and mediates healthy adipose–hypothalamic crosstalk. In males, adipose-specific AhR depletion delays the development of obesity and insulin resistance through the maintenance of healthy crosstalk between adipocytes and immune cells.

Abstract Geological CO2 storage can be employed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. Depleted oil and gas reservoirs, deep saline aquifers, and coal beds are considered to be viable subsurface CO2 storage options. Remote monitoring is essential for observing CO2 plume migration and potential leak detection during and after injection. Leak detection is probably the main risk, though overall monitoring for the plume boundaries and verification of stored volumes are also necessary. There are many effective remote CO2 monitoring techniques with various benefits and limitations. We suggest a new approach using a combination of repeated seismic and electromagnetic surveys to delineate CO2 plume and estimate the gas saturation in a saline reservoir during the lifetime of a storage site. This study deals with the CO2 plume delineation and saturation estimation using a combination of seismic and electromagnetic or controlled-source electromagnetic (EM/CSEM) synthetic data. We assumed two scenarios over a period of 40 years; Case 1 was modeled assuming both seismic and EM repeated surveys were acquired, whereas, in Case 2, repeated EM surveys were taken with only before injection (baseline) 3D seismic data available. Our results show that monitoring the CO2 plume in terms of extent and saturation is possible both by (i) using a repeated seismic and electromagnetic, and (ii) using a baseline seismic in combination with repeated electromagnetic data. Due to the nature of the seismic and EM techniques, spatial coverage from the reservoir's base to the surface makes it possible to detect the CO2 plume’s lateral and vertical migration. However, the CSEM low resolution and depth uncertainties are some limitations that need consideration. These results also have implications for monitoring oil production—especially with water flooding, hydrocarbon exploration, and freshwater aquifer identification.

In any geological subsurface fluid injection, a viable top seal is required to contain the vertical movement of the injected fluid plume. However, seal integrity assessment is challenging because of the uncertainties possessed by various parameters. A probabilistic solution might be more appropriate when significant uncertainties are present. In this study, we evaluate Drake shale caprock structural reliability using a stochastic method. Drake shale is the primary top seal in the Aurora CO2 storage site, located in the Horda Platform area in the northern North Sea. Based on the lithological variations, Drake caprock shale is divided into two parts designated by upper and lower units. Six model scenarios from the upper and lower Drake units have been tested. The probabilistic structural failures of varying model scenarios are estimated using the First-Order Reliability Method (FORM). Drake Formation shale shows a considerably low probability of failure (~0) with a high reliability index in the initial stress-state condition and after-injection scenarios. Moreover, the parameter sensitivity study indicates that horizontal stress and cohesion are the most influential input parameters during reliability estimation. Comparative analysis between the caprock properties and failure probability reveals that rock strength properties such as cohesion and friction angle strongly dictate the probability of failure estimation. Moreover, comparing two caprock shale formations indicates that the structural failure values are not correlatable; hence, a formation-specific failure assessment is recommended.

Characterizing the top seal integrity of organic-rich caprock shale is critical in hydrocarbon exploration and fluid storage sites assessment because the caprock acts as a barrier to the low-density upward migrating fluids. This study investigated the geomechanical properties of the Upper Jurassic caprock shales of various basins from the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Usually, paleo-deposition and diagenesis vary from basin to basin, which influences the geomechanical properties of caprock shale; hence, the seal integrity. Fourteen (14) wells from four (4) different basins within the Norwegian Continental Shelf were analyzed to evaluate the effects of various processes acting on caprock properties. Comparative mineralogy-based caprock properties were also investigated. We include a thorough review of the distribution of organic and inorganic components utilizing SEM and 3D microtomography as they relate to the development and propagation of microfractures. Five (5) wells from three (3) basins contain measured shear sonic logs. These wells were used for petrophysics and rock physics analysis. Three elastic properties-based brittleness indices were estimated and compared. The percentage of different mineral fractions of the studied wells varied significantly between the studied basins, which is also reflected in the mineralogical brittleness indices evaluation. Irrespective of the studied basins, relative changes in caprock properties between wells have been observed. The Young’s Modulus–Poisson’s ratio-based empirical equation underestimated the brittleness indices compared with mineralogy- and acoustic properties-based brittleness estimation. A better match has been observed between the mineralogy- and acoustic properties-based brittleness indices. However, as both methods have limitations, an integrated approach is recommended to evaluate the brittleness indices. Brittleness indices are a qualitative assessment of the top seal; hence, further investigation is required to quantify sealing integrity.

There are fundamental sex differences in the regulation of energy homeostasis. Better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of energy balance that account for this asymmetry will assist in developing sex-specific therapies for sexually dimorphic diseases such as obesity. Multiple organs, including the hypothalamus and adipose tissue, play vital roles in the regulation of energy homeostasis, which are regulated differently in males and females. Various neuronal populations, particularly within the hypothalamus, such as arcuate nucleus (ARC), can sense nutrient content of the body by the help of peripheral hormones such leptin, derived from adipocytes, to regulate energy homeostasis. This review summarizes how adipose tissue crosstalk with homeostatic network control systems in the brain, which includes energy regulatory regions and the hypothalamic–pituitary axis, contribute to energy regulation in a sex-specific manner. Moreover, development of obesity is contingent upon diet and environmental factors. Substances from diet and environmental contaminants can exert insidious effects on energy metabolism, acting peripherally through the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Developmental AhR activation can impart permanent alterations of neuronal development that can manifest a number of sex-specific physiological changes, which sometimes become evident only in adulthood. AhR is currently being investigated as a potential target for treating obesity. The consensus is that impaired function of the receptor protects from obesity in mice. AhR also modulates sex steroid receptors, and hence, one of the objectives of this review is to explain why investigating sex differences while examining this receptor is crucial. Overall, this review summarizes sex differences in the regulation of energy homeostasis imparted by the adipose–hypothalamic axis and examines how this axis can be affected by xenobiotics that signal through AhR.

In CO2 sequestration projects, assessing caprock structural stability is crucial to assure the success and reliability of the CO2 injection. However, since caprock experimental data are sparse, we applied a Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm to generate stochastic data from the given mean and standard deviation values. The generated data sets were introduced to a neural network (NN), including four hidden layers for classification purposes. The model was then used to evaluate organic-rich Draupne caprock shale failure in the Alpha structure, northern North Sea. The train and test were carried out with 75% and 25% of the input data, respectively. Following that, validation is accomplished with unseen data, yielding promising classification scores. The results show that introducing larger input data sizes to the established NN provides better convergence conditions and higher classification scores. Although the NN can predicts the failure states with a classification score of 97%, the structural reliability was significantly low compare to the failure results estimated using other method. Moreover, this indicated that during evaluating the field-scale caprock failure, more experimental data is needed for a reliable result. However, this study depicts the advantage of machine learning algorithms in geological CO2 storage projects compared with similar finite elements methods in the aspect of short fitting time, high accuracy, and flexibility in processing different input data sizes with different scales.

Characterization of caprock shale is critical in CO2 storage site evaluation because the caprock shale acts as a barrier for the injected buoyant CO2 plume. The properties of shales are complex and influenced by various processes; hence, it is challenging to evaluate the caprock quality. An integrated approach is therefore necessary for assessing seal integrity. In this study, we investigated the caprock properties of the Lower Jurassic Drake Formation shales from the proposed CO2 storage site Aurora (the Longship/Northern Lights CCS project), located in the Horda Platform area, offshore Norway. Wireline logs from 50 exploration wells, various 2D seismic lines, and two 3D seismic cubes were used to investigate the variations of the caprock properties. The Drake Formation was subdivided into upper and lower Drake units based on the lithological variations observed. Exhumation and thermal gradient influencing the caprock properties were also analyzed. Moreover, rock physics diagnostics were carried out, and caprock property maps were generated using the average log values to characterize the Drake Formation shales. In addiiton, pre-stack seismic-inverted properties and post-stack seismic attributes were assessed and compared to the wireline log-based analysis. The sediment source controlled at 61° N significantly influenced the depositional environment of the studied area, which later influenced the diagenetic processes and had various caprock properties. The upper and lower Drake units represent similar geomechanical properties in the Aurora area, irrespective of significant lithological variations. The Drake Formation caprock shale near the injection site shows less-ductile to less-brittle brittleness values. Based on the caprock thickness and shaliness in the Aurora injection site, Drake Formation shale might act as an effective top seal. However, the effect of injection-induced pressure changes on caprock integrity needs to be evaluated.

Due to lack of robust data on childhood cystic fibrosis (CF) in Bangladesh we sought to evaluate their clinico-epidemiology. A cross-sectional observation was conducted adopting CF-foundation consensus-panel-diagnostic criteria in 3 tertiary-care-hospitals in Bangladesh from 2000 to 2017. Clinically suspected 95 CF-cases were subjected to sweat-chloride testing using locally-developed a fast, cheap and effective indigenously body-wrapped sweating technique measured by US-Easy Lyte-automated microprocessor-controlled analyzer marking ≥60 mmol/L as positive. Human Fortilin, an antiapoptotic protein, has also been implicated in several diseases; however, several potential uses of fortilin have also been proposed. Bearing the implications of fortilin in mind, fortilin analog, which has no complication with diseases, is required. Since a recombinant full-length fortilin from Fenneropenaeus merguiensis (rFm-Fortilin (FL)) reported only 44% (3e-27) homologous to human fortilin, therefore the biological activities of the Fm-Fortilin (FL) and its fragments (F2, F12, and F23) were investigated for potential use against HEMA toxicity from filling cement to pulp cell. The rFm-Fortilin FL, F2, 12, and F23 were expressed and assayed for proliferation activity. The rFm-Fortilin (FL) showed proliferation activity on human dental pulp cells (HDPCs) and protected the cells from 2-hydroxy-ethyl methacrylate (HEMA) at 1–20 ng/ml. In contrast, none of the rFm-Fortilin fragments promoted HDPC growth that may be due to a lack of three conserved amino acid residues together for binding with the surface of Rab GTPase for proliferative activity. In addition, rFm-Fortilin (FL) activated mineralization and trend to suppressed production of proinflammatory cytokines, including histamine (at 10 ng/ml) and TNF-α (at 100 ng/ml). Besides, the rFm-Fortilin (FL) did not mutate the Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell. Therefore, the rFm-Fortilin (FL) has the potential use as a supplementary medical material to promote cell proliferation in patients suffering severe tooth decay and other conditions.

Injection-induced rock mechanical failure risks are critical in CO2 sequestration, and thus there is a need to evaluate these occurrences to ensure safe and reliable subsurface storage. A stress–strain-based numerical simulation can reveal the potential mechanical risks of any CO2 sites. This study investigated the hydromechanical effect on geomechanical failure due to injection-induced stress and pore pressure changes in the prospective CO2 storage site Smeaheia, offshore Norway. An inverted-seismic-property-driven 3D field-scale geomechanical model was carried out in the Smeaheia area to evaluate the rock failure and deformation risks in various pressure-build-up scenarios. A one-way coupling between the before- and after-injection pressure scenarios of nine different models has been iterated using the finite element method. The effect of the sensitivity of total pore volume and pore compressibility on rock mechanical deformation is also evaluated. Although various models illustrated comparative variability on failure potential, no model predicted caprock failure or fracture based on the Mohr–Coulomb failure envelope. Moreover, the lateral mechanical failure variation among different locations indicated the possibility to identify a safer injection point with less chances of leakage. In addition, the pore volume and pore compressibility significantly influence the mechanical behavior of the reservoir and caprock rocks. Although this analysis could predict better injection locations based on geomechanical behavior, a fluid simulation model needs to be simulated for assessing lateral and vertical plume migration before making an injection decision.

VISCAL (VISSIM calibration) is an automated calibration tool for microscopic simulation parameters in VISSIM environment, based on three heuristic optimization algorithms: (a) genetic algorithm (GA); (b) simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA); (c) simulated annealing (SA). It is developed with a goal to automate and ease the tedious process of calibration, offering greater flexibility to the users by providing control on every aspect of the calibration process. It includes multiple features for a generic application tool with the ability to test the significance of the appropriate decision parameter set for a particular network, to determine the most suitable objective function to reflect network characteristics, and to check the suitability of any of the three heuristic optimization algorithms for a particular network. VISCAL also offers four objective function choices into the system: (1) speed, (2) flow, (3) delay, and (4) multi-objective criteria. It is able to calibrate all the driving behavior parameters for any type (urban, rural) and extent of network (small or large network). However, for this study, the operation of the tool is tested by a dataset obtained from a 3.26 km freeway of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Salinity affects almost every aspect of the physiology and biochemistry of plants due to both osmotic stress and ionic toxicity. We studied the variation of ion uptake in tomato cv. BARI Tomato-5 under different levels of salinity (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 dS m-1) and their mitigation by different concentration of Ca2+ (0, 5, 10 mM). The results showed that salt stress significantly affects the stomatal conductance of tomato. Salt treatment markedly increased the uptake of Na+ and decreased both K+ and Ca2+ uptake in the leaves of tomato. The uptake of Na+ decreased and uptake of Ca2+ and K+ increased in tomato when salt-stressed plants were treated with Ca2+. Our results revealed that Ca supplementation can effectively reduce the salt-induced ionic toxicity in tomato plants. Exogenous application of Ca2+ significantly mitigates the adverse effects of salt-induced ionic toxicity.

Sowing date and weed management play a significant role in determining soybean growth, development and seed yield. Results showed that different sowing date and weed control methods had significant effect on relative weed density, weed biomass, weed control efficiency, plant height, dry weight plant-1 and seed yield of soybean. Among the infested weed species in the experimental field the dominant weeds were Lindernia procumbens (44.78%), Echinochloa colonum (26.39%) and Cynodon dactylon (16.30%). The results also revealed that early sowing (2 January) brought about the highest seed yield (2.17 t ha-1) and sowing delay (1 February) resulted in the lowest yield (1.64 t ha-1). Two times hand weeding (20 and 40 DAS) controlled the weeds most effectively and led to highest seed yield (2.23 t ha-1) which was statistically similar (2.19 t ha-1) with herbicide application. Combination effect showed that the highest seed yield (2.50 t ha-1) was obtained from 2 January sowing when the crop was weeded by hand at 20 and 40 DAS.

Neurofibromatosis Type I if associated with aplasia of greater wing of sphenoid may be associated with a pulsatile exophthalmos. However, very rarely it may be associated with a pulsatile enophthalmos. This clinical image describes a rare presentation with pulsatile enophthalmos, esotropia and kinking of the optic nerve due to neurofibomatosis type I.

Background: Poisoning with various substances is a global problem. It is one of the most important reasons for emergency admission in the hospital. The earlier the initial resuscitations, gastric decontamination and use of specific antidotes, the better is the outcome. Epidemiology of poisoning differs from region to region. This study was carried out to determine the pattern and severity of poisoning in a tertiary care hospital. Objective: To characterize the poisoning cases admitted in Enam Medical College Hospital. Materials and Methods: All cases admitted to the emergency department of Enam Medical College Hospital during the period of April to December, 2010 were evaluated retrospectively. We reviewed data obtained from the hospital medical records and included the following factors: demographic characteristics, etiology and outcome of the acutely poisoned patients. Total 84 poisoning cases were found and they were included in the study. Results: The overall case fatality rate was 3.5%. More detailed data from 2010 reveals that two-thirds of the patients were 20-30 years old, 53% male and 47% female. Organophosphorus was the most common cause (73.9%) followed by unknown poisoning (9.5%), sedative (5.9%), harpic (4.7%), aluminium phosphide (2.4%), savlon (1.2%), paracetamol (1.2%) and amitryptiline (1.2%). 90.5% cases were suicidal and 9.5% were homicidal. Conclusion: This study provides important information on the characteristics of the poisoning in this region. Community education about the danger of the drugs and reduction of exposure to pesticides are recommended.

Cell-based regenerative therapies, based on in vitro propagation of stem cells, offer tremendous hope to many individuals suffering from degenerative diseases that were previously deemed untreatable. Due to the self-renewal capacity, multilineage potential, and immunosuppressive property, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are considered as an attractive source of stem cells for regenerative therapies. However, poor growth kinetics, early senescence, and genetic instability during in vitro expansion and poor engraftment after transplantation are considered to be among the major disadvantages of MSC-based regenerative therapies. A number of complex inter- and intracellular interactive signaling systems control growth, multiplication, and differentiation of MSCs in their niche. Common laboratory conditions for stem cell culture involve ambient O2 concentration (20%) in contrast to their niche where they usually reside in 2–9% O2. Notably, O2 plays an important role in maintaining stem cell fate in terms of proliferation and differentiation, by regulating hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) mediated expression of different genes. This paper aims to describe and compare the role of normoxia (20% O2) and hypoxia (2–9% O2) on the biology of MSCs. Finally it is concluded that a hypoxic environment can greatly improve growth kinetics, genetic stability, and expression of chemokine receptors during in vitro expansion and eventually can increase efficiency of MSC-based regenerative therapies.

Myasthenia gravis is the most frequent autoimmune neuromuscular transmission disorder with incidence of 2-20 patients per million. Its pathophysiology is autoimmune, with acetylcholine receptor auto antibodies damaging the post-synaptic fold at the muscle membrane. The diagnostic confirmation of myasthenia gravis is often challenging. Ice-oneyes test can be used to diagnose this disease for its simplicity, safety and cost-effectiveness. Here we report a case of myasthenia gravis in Enam Medical College Hospital, Savar, Dhaka where ice-on-eyes test was done with improvement of ptosis of the patient. Aim of this case report is to make aware our physicians to apply this simple bed side test instead of common traditional edrophonium (tensilon test) test for confirmation of the diagnosis of ocular myasthenia gravis.
