Introduction: Physical inactivity has been identified as the fourth leading risk factor for worldwide mortality with major implications towards general health. Monitoring the level of physical inactivity may reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and their risk factors. This study aims to determine the prevalence of physical inactivity and its associated factors among adults aged 18 years and above in Malaysia. Methodology: Data was obtained from the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2019. It was a cross-sectional, population-based survey which employed two- stage stratified random sampling design. A total of 10,356 out of 10,472 respondents were interviewed using a short version of International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results: Overall, the prevalence of physical inactivity among adults aged 18 years and above in Malaysia was 24.6% (95% CI: 23.2, 26.1). Results from multivariable logistic model showed that Chinese ethnicity (aOR 1.32; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.67), urban dwellers (aOR 1.30; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.57), those who were single (including widow, widower and divorcee) (aOR 1.36; 95% CI: 1.14, 1.61), students (aOR 2.10; 95% CI: 1.30, 3.40), higher household income earners (aOR 1.34; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.68) and those with hypercholesterolaemia (aOR 1.25; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.51) were significantly more likely to be physically inactive. Conclusion: Specific and appropriate intervention towards targeted group is in crucial need to increase the level of physical activity and to promote an active living towards an active and healthy Malaysia.

Serious injury due to motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) significantly contributes to the adolescents’ health status. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of nonfatal injury due to MVAs and its associated factors among Malaysian school-going adolescents. Nationally representative samples were selected via 2-stage stratified cluster sampling. Data was collected using a validated self-administered questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the associations between the variables. A total of 1088 out of 27 497 adolescents reported that they had sustained serious injury due to MVAs with a prevalence of 4.1% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 3.7-4.5). Serious injury due to MVAs among adolescents was positively associated with being current cigarette smokers (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.5; 95% CI = 2.2-2.9), followed by Malay ethnicity (aOR = 2.4; 95% CI = 1.9-3.0), current drug users (aOR = 2.3; 95% CI = 1.9-3.0), boys (aOR = 2.1; 95% CI = 1.8-2.4), Indian ethnicity (aOR = 1.8; 95% CI = 1.2-2.5), and those who were in upper secondary school (aOR = 1.3; 95% CI = 1.2-1.5). Targeted intervention and curbing substance use among boys may reduce the morbidities from MVAs and its resulting complications.

This study aims to determine the prevalence of anaemia and factors associated with anaemia among men in Malaysia. Data from the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2019 was utilized. Haemoglobin level for men aged 15 years and above who gave their consent was measured using HemoCue® Hb 201+ System©. Majority of them (87.2%) were men aged 15-59 years referring to the younger age group. The prevalence of anaemia among men was 12.6% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 10.9, 14.5). Prevalence was higher in the older men (30.7%; 95% CI: 26.6, 35.1) than the younger men (10.0%; 95% CI: 8.2, 12.2). The multivariable logistic regression observed that anaemia among men was associated with older age (adjusted odds ratios [aOR] = 3.1; 95% CI: 2.1, 4.4) and those with diabetes (aOR = 1.5; 95% CI: 1.2, 2.1). Older men are more affected by anaemia than younger men. Anaemia among older men in Malaysia is considered at the level of moderate to severe public health significance and the likelihood of developing anaemia increases among older men with diabetes. These often-overlooked issues among men need to be detected and treated early to prevent complications and to improve their quality of life.

IntroductionTuberculosis is a preventable disease but still remains a public health concern.The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that nearly ONE QUARTER OF THE WORLD population are at risk of progression to tuberculosis disease.This study aims to describe Malaysia’s burden of tuberculosis for the year 2015 in terms of Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs). Materials and MethodsThe calculation of burden of disease in terms of DALY was done using the methodology used in the Global Burden of Disease Study. The DALYs for tuberculosis were calculated by summing the Years of Life Lost (YLL) with the Years Lived with Disability (YLD). Results [Refer to Poster]. DiscussionMalaysia’s burden of tuberculosis accounted for 0.9% of the overall DALYs in 2015, which is much lower compared to those observed in other countries such as Thailand (1.4% of overall DALYs in 2009) and Brazil (2% of overall DALYs in 2010). Timely detection and prompt treatment should be emphasized to prevent early deaths and subsequently reduce the high tuberculosis mortality burden. Reducing the tuberculosis burden among males could be done most efficiently by improving access for tuberculosis care for males, providing counseling sessions as well as lost of wages compensation5. Mass media campaigns on tuberculosis awareness programs, targeting age-specific groups could help reach those within the high tuberculosis burden categories. ConclusionThe reduction of tuberculosis morbidity and mortality among malescan potentially reduce a large number of tuberculosis burden in Malaysia. Stronger approaches towards lowering the number of non-communicable diseases could help lessen Malaysian elderly’s risk of tuberculosis progression and deaths. &nbsp

Monitoring the level of physical inactivity may reduce the disease burden, evaluate the effectiveness of current programme and as a guide for future planning. ObjectiveThis study aimed to determine the prevalence of physical inactivity among adults aged 16 years and above in Malaysia. MethodologyData was obtained from adults aged 16 years (n= 10,767) and above from the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2019, a cross sectional, population-based survey using a two- stage stratified random sampling design. Respondents were interviewed using a short version of International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) . An individual with any combination total score of Metabolic Equivalents score (MET-minutes/week) from walking, moderate-intensity physical activity or vigorous-intensity physical activity which is lower than 600 METs minute a week were considered as physically inactive. Data were analysed by complex sampling descriptive analysis using SPSS version 26. Results[Refer to Poster]. ConclusionIt is important to encourage younger generations to be physically active during adolescence and young adulthood, as this may be predictive for their cardiovascular risk profile and lipid related risk later in life. Aims As the Malaysian population is aging rapidly, there is an urgent need for an effective management plan for healthy aging, to extend life expectancy and to improve quality of life (QoL). Urinary incontinence (UI), which is common in older persons, is often linked to reduced QoL. This study aimed to determine the effects of UI on QoL among older persons in Malaysia. Methods This study was based on data obtained from 3716 Malaysians aged ≥60 years as part of the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2018. QoL was measured using the Control, Autonomy, Self-realization and Pleasure 19-item (CASP-19) questionnaire. UI was measured using the Questionnaire Urinary Incontinence Diagnosis (QUID) score. Association between UI and QoL were examined using linear regression analysis, after controlling socio-demographic variables and comorbidities. Results Overall, the prevalence of UI was 5.2%. By subtypes, the prevalence of stress UI and urge UI were both 2.0%, while that of mixed UI was 1.3%. The UI group rated their lives more negatively in all four domains of QoL compared with non-UI group. Those who were incontinent had lower standardized scores on control and autonomy domains of CASP-19 as well as total score. Results from linear regression analysis indicated that UI had a significantly negative impact on control and autonomy domains of QoL after controlling for socio-demographic factors and comorbidities. Conclusion UI contributes to a significant reduction on QoL of older persons. Healthcare providers need to be sensitive in evaluating and discussing UI, particularly with their older patients.
