5. A Review on Traditional Uses and Pharmacological Importance of Genus Elaeagnus Species

Abstract

Family Elaeagnaceae is also known as oleaster family having three genera: Hippophae, Shepherdia and Elaeagnus, and about 70-80 species found worldwide. The multipurpose uses of genus Elaeagnus, their pharmacological significances and diverse chemical composition make them worthy of investigation and exploration for botanists and phytochemists. This critical review summarizes the botanical distribution, phytochemical constituents, and biological activities of various species of genus Elaeagnus. The online published material/papers available at different search engines were studied to compile this review. The existing literature available on search engines like Web of Science, PubMed, Science Direct. Springer, Elsevier, Scopus, Taylor and Francis, ACS publications, Google Scholar and Wiley On-line Library, was screened to collect relevant data. Elaeagnus species are widely used to treat a number of health issues due to their God gifted phytochemical compositions having great beneficial health applications. Phytochemical and biological evaluation studies have revealed the presence of essential chemical constituents like flavonoids, phenolic acids, carotenoids, terpenoids, lignanoids, organic acids, coumarins, alkaloids, steroids, vitamin C, lycopene, and polyphenols in Elaeagnus species that are responsible for their remarkable observed biological activities like antioxidant, antidiabetic, antibacterial, muscle relaxant effect, anti-diarrheal, antinociceptive, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, and anti-amnesic activities. This review presents the importance of some species of genus Elaeagnus in terms of their traditional medicinal uses, phytochemical composition as well as potential pharmacological properties. However, bio-guided isolation studies are needed to understand the role of a particular compound in the observed biological activities. 15. Heavy metal transportation from polluted water into human through fodder plants and farmed animals.

Abstract

Herein we have determined the heavy metals concentrations (Pb, Cd, and Ni) estimated in River Swat water, irregated soils samples, fodder plant's parts, farmed animal milk/meat samples and human blood from two location Mingora and Barikot in District Swat, Pakistan, using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, and Ni were found 0.016 ± 0.008, 0.50 ± 0.03, and 0.022 ± 0.004 mg/L in Mingora drain water, respectively, while in the Barikot sample the aforementioned metal were in the range of 0.014 ± 0.01, 0.29 ± 0.02, and 0.108 ± 0.08 mg/L. In the field water samples of Mingora the Cd, Pb and Ni were detected in the range of 0.008 ± 0.001, 0.65 ± 0.05 and 0.032 ± 0.006 mg/L, respectively, while in the field water samples of Barikot contained Cd = 0.016 ± 0.007 mg/L, Pb = 0.48 ± 0.04 mg/L and Ni = 0.043 ± 0.003 mg/L. Drain soil of Mingora contained the highest concentrations of heavy metals, with Cd = 3.9 ± 0.62 mg/kg, Pb = 45.5 ± 3.2 mg/kg, and Ni = 19.95 ± 2.1 mg/kg, whereas field soil contained Cd = 1.6 ± 0.44 mg/kg, Pb = 54.5 ± 2.26 mg/kg, and Ni = 34.75 ± 3.2 mg/kg. Cd in the Barikot drain soil was 3.95 ± 0.71 mg/kg, while it was 0.8 ± 0.06 mg/kg in the field soil. Lead in the same drain sample was 33 ± 3.23 mg/kg, while it was 72 ± 4.15 mg/kg in the field sample. Ni concentrations in Barikot drain soil samples was 13.85 ± 1.1 mg/kg, while 6.9 ± 0.8 mg/kg was detected in field samples. From the results it can be concluded that appreciable concentrations of heavy metals are present in milk and meat samples of farmed animals whereas significant quantities are also there in human blood samples indicating the transport of the selected metals from water through fodder plants into human. Abstract

Laetiporus is a cosmopolitan genus of the "Antrodia clade" in the order Polyporales that causes brown rot in many hardwood trees and some conifers. In the current study, we examined specimens of Laetiporus zonatus collected from Quercus semecarpifolia (Fagaceae) at three different localities in the district Swat, KP, Pakistan. The specimen's identity was determined through extensive morphoanatomical examination and molecular characterization. For reconstruction of the phylogenetic relationships of the species, the study applied three methods: maximum parsimony (MP), maximum likelihood (ML), and Bayesian analyses to the concatenated dataset (ITS + nrLSU + rpb2). The mean character difference approach was utilized to create a phenetic cladogram through morphometric analysis. Our sample sequence grouped together with Laetiporus zonatus showing significant support values of 87% for MP, 98% for ML and 1.0 for Bayesian analyses. The morphological data matrix showed a high degree of similarity (Bray-curtis similarity = 0.925, Euclidean distance = 3.81) between our specimen and L. zonatus. Our study also provides habitat characteristics and in vitro cultural characteristics of the isolates. Laetiporus zonatus is characterized by yellow pileal surface, become pale buff to creamy when dry and whitish cream pore surface, distinctly zonate, radially furrowed upper surface and undulating white margin, 2-3 pores mm-1, ellipsoid to ovoid basidiospores (5.6-8.7 × 4.2-5.9 µm) with Q value of 1.16-1.55 and is found exclusively on Quercus spp. in temperate forests. 42. Hepatoprotective and nephroprotective effects of Sedum adenotrichumin paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity in rabbits

Abstract

Sedum adenotrichum(SA) has been traditionally used against various ailments due to the presence of several important phenolic compounds. This study provides a scientific basis for the hepatoprotective and nephroprotective potentials of Sedum adenotrichumin paracetamol-induced toxicity in rabbits. Methanolic extract of Sedum adenotrichumalong with paracetamol was administered orally to rabbits alone or in combination with paracetamol for 2 weeks. Results showed that paracetamol-induced toxicity was correlated with a significant change in biochemical, hematological parameters, and loss in body weight of rabbits, and the curative effect of SA methanolic extract was found. Liver and kidney histological studies showed significant induced toxicity of paracetamol and correspondence restoration power of SA methanolic extract. The levels of reduced glutathione, radical scavenging activity, and lipid peroxidation in the liver were restored to normal by the methanolic extract of SA. This study confirmed the protective effect of SA methanolic extract against hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity caused by paracetamol. Biochemical analysis of the methanolic extract of SA confirmed the presence of bioactive phenolic compounds which have hepatic and nephroprotective potentials.

Abstract

In this study, catechin (CTN) isolated from Elaeagnus umbellata was evaluated for in vitro antioxidant potential and inhibition of carbohydrate digestive enzymes (α-amylase and α-glucosidase). The compound was also tested for its in vivo antidiabetic potential using Sprague-Dawley rats as experimental animals. The effects of various doses of catechin in STZ (Streptozotocin) induced diabetic rats on fasting blood glucose level, body weight, lipid parameters, hepatic enzymes, and renal functions were evaluated using the reported protocols. The CTN exhibited the highest percent antioxidant for free radical scavenging activity against DPPH and ABTS free radicals, and inhibited the activity of carbohydrate digestive enzymes (with percent inhibition values: 79 ± 1.5% α-amylase and 80 ± 1.1% α-glucosidase). Administration CTN and standard glibenclamide significantly decreased the fasting blood glucose level and increased the body weight in STZ-induced diabetic rats. CTN significantly decreased the different lipid parameters, hepatic, and renal function enzyme levels along with Hb1c level in diabetic rats, while significantly increasing the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level with values comparable to the standard glibenclamide. Further, the altered levels of glutathione and lipid peroxides of liver and kidney tissues were restored (by CTN) to levels similar to the control group. CTN significantly increased the antioxidant enzyme activities, total content of reduced glutathione, and reduced the malondialdehyde (MDA) level in rat liver and kidney tissues homogenates, and also corrected the histopathological abnormalities, suggesting its antioxidant potential.
