Background: Sleep inertia, characterized by reduced alertness and cognitive functioning upon waking, has been well-researched in its effects on cognitive and motor abilities. However, its impact on voice quality remains less clear. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep inertia following nocturnal sleep and changes in acoustic and perceptual voice parameters in adults. Methods: Ninety healthy participants (45 females, 45 males, ages: 18 - 30 years) took part in a pre-post study using convenience sampling. Their voices were recorded before and after nocturnal sleep across multiple tasks, including vowel /a/ phonation, spontaneous speech, text reading, and maximum phonation time (MPT). Recordings were made in a quiet room using a Zoom H6 recorder at a 44.1 kHz rate. The acoustic analysis included measures of fundamental frequency (F0), standard deviation of F0 (SD F0), vocal intensity, harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR), cepstral peak prominence smoothed (CPPS), jitter, shimmer, and formant frequencies. Auditory-perceptual evaluation was conducted using the GRBAS Scale. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS-19. The Shapiro-Wilk test assessed normality, and a paired t -test compared variables, separately for males and females at a 0.05 significance level. Results: Acoustic analysis revealed that both females and males experienced a decrease in mean F0, mean intensity, HNR, and CPPS, and an increase in jitter, shimmer, and SD F0 across most voice samples after sleeping. These changes were particularly significant for females in all voice samples (P < 0.001). Perceptual analysis also showed a significant increase in grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, and strain for both genders after sleep (P < 0.001). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that sleep inertia negatively impacts vocal performance, resulting in a decline in voice quality for both genders after sleep compared to before. Brown coal is a relatively abundant and low-cost material, which has been used as an effective ionexchanger to remove ammonium from wastewater. In this study, the influences of pH, ammonium concentration and brown coal dose were investigated for removal of ammonium content from synthetic wastewater. Raw brown coal (RBC) treated with base solution has superior ammonium removal efficiency compared to RBC, which was due to chemical alterations and thus greater attachment of ammonium molecules to base-washed brown coal (BWBC), confirmed by Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy-electron diffraction scattering has identified the augmented sodium content in BWBC, which was subsequently replaced with nitrogen upon wastewater treatment. Crystallographic analysis showed a higher crystallinity formed in BWBC compared to RBC, which was likely due to formation of sodium salt crystals during NaOH treatment. Fitting batch experimental results to adsorption kinetic models suggested that the removal of ammonium was mainly governed by the reaction process rather than the physical diffusion mechanism. Both kinetic and isotherm studies confirmed higher adsorption capacity for BWBC compared to RBC. RBC in column mode was also experimented with to show organics removal from a secondary effluent. Objectives: Voice disorders can profoundly impact health, quality of life, job performance, and social interactions. Traditional evaluations have expanded to include quality-of-life assessments, emphasizing self-reported outcomes. The Voice Handicap Index (VHI) stands out among relevant questionnaires, with the VHI-10 being a concise derivative. This study was conducted to translate and validate the Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) questionnaire for Persian speakers, enhancing clinical assessments of voice disorders and quality of life., Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted in Iran, involved (1) translating the VHI-10 into Persian, (2) confirming face and content validity using Content Validity Ratio (CVR), and Content Validity Index (CVI), and (3) evaluating its reliability through a survey. A panel of experts confirmed the validity, and reliability of the study, which was assessed using Cronbach's alpha, Spearman-Brown, and Guttman coefficients. The survey involved 225 participants, including 150 healthy people and 75 patients with voice disorders, who were selected using a convenience sampling method., Results: All question items demonstrated a CVI greater than 0.79 and a CVR between 0.62 and 1. Reliability analysis yielded high Cronbach's alpha values for functional, physical, and emotional domains (0.909) and total (0.961). The mean overall scores of VHI-10 for healthy and disordered groups were 18.78 and 0.74, respectively. The VHI-10 effectively discriminated between healthy and disordered groups in all domains, with an accuracy of 97.33%. The determined cut-off point was 4.5, with a strong area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve (0.989)., Conclusion: This study successfully adapted and validated the Persian version of the VHI-10. The questionnaire demonstrated high reliability and validity, distinguishing between individuals with and without voice disorders.
