Previous research has established that undergraduate students in the UK who had attended private schools perform less well at university, on average, than equivalent students who had been educated at a state school prior to university (Smith and Naylor, 2001 and 2005; Crawford, 2014a). This well-known result has provided an evidence base for the use of contextualised offers in admissions across the sector (Schwartz Report, 2004; Hubble and Bolton, 2020) as an instrument for enhancing social mobility. In the current paper, we use a rich dataset for a particular university to examine whether the negative association between private schooling and class of degree awarded holds across all students, independent of ethnicity: we find that it does not. For White students, we obtain the standard result that private schooling is associated negatively with class of degree. However, in stark contrast, among students whose ethnicity is self-reported as either Black, Asian or Mixed Ethnicity, attendance at a private school prior to university is, on average, associated positively with the class of degree awarded. On further exploration, we find this is driven by a strong positive association among Black students and students of Mixed Ethnicity; the overarching category of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnicity conceals substantive differences within the category. Among Asian students, the absence of any association between private schooling and degree class, on average, masks a very strong negative association for those from lower socioeconomic status backgrounds. We discuss and interpret our results in the context of hypotheses within the literatures on schooling effects and on the ethnicity awarding gap in higher education.

The topic of this PhD thesis is multi-scale modeling of woven composites with the aim of predicting their mechanical behavior. The objectives of the presented work are the experimental characterization and numerical modeling of the first stages of damage at the microscopic scale (scale of the fibres and matrix) in order to take into account their influence in the modelling of a yarn at the mesoscopic scale. First, the characteristic damage mechanisms of a carbon fiber reinforced epoxy matrix woven composite are determined experimentally through in-situ tensile test in a Scanning Electron Microscope. The mechanisms observed are fibres/matrix decohesions followed by a percolation in a prefered path with the creation of matrix strips. These strips strech until their rupture causing the transverse failure of the yarn. This observation is coupled with a full-field displacement measurement by global approach digitale image correlation with mechanical regularisation. The heterogenous nature of the composite is accounted for in the method by means of a microstructure-based mesh fromthe the real material geometry. In order to model these damage mechanisms, a representative geometry of the composite at the microscale, and the mechanical behaviour of the fibres (linear elastic), the matrix (viscoplastic, experimentally identified) and the fibres/matrix interfaces (bi-linear cohesive zone model (CZM)) have been determined. The experimental observations allow restricting the possible range of the parameters of the cohesive zone model among published values for similarmaterials. Moreover, the experimentally observed and the numerically simulated displacement fields evidence the same damage scenario. Finally, the failure envelope of a yarn in the composite under combined tensile, compressive, and shear loading is determined based on microscale simulations. The proposed approach allows predicting the first stages of damage in a yarn based on the mechanics of the composite’s constituents at the microscopic scale.; Ce travail de thèse s’inscrit dans le cadre de la modélisation multi-échelle des matériaux composites à renfort tissé dans le but de prévoir leur comportement mécanique.Les objectifs de cette étude sont de caractériser et de modéliser les premiers stades de l’endommagement à l’échelle microscopique (échelle de la fibre et de la matrice) afin de prendre en compte leur influence lors de la modélisation du toron de fibres à l’échelle mésoscopique.
