Pakistan's unique geographical location has made it seismically vulnerable. Owing to this, recent earthquakes have revealed the susceptibility of the existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings in Pakistan. This has raised concerns about the structural performance of RC buildings because most mid-rise RC buildings in Pakistan have shear wall lateral force resisting systems. In this study, a survey of existing mid-rise RC buildings in Pakistan's capital territory is used to develop a database of existing RC shear walls. By using this database, this research aims to provide a seismic performance assessment of existing RC shear walls to determine their deficiencies and provide necessary experimental data for retrofitting. Two RC shear wall specimens SW1 and SW2, representing the characteristics of existing RC shear walls are tested under quasi-static loading. The seismic response of the existing RC mid-rise walls is assessed through the mode of failure, hysteretic behavior, energy dissipation, flexure and shear stiffness, and curvature distribution. The findings reveal that the existing mid-rise RC walls in the region did not satisfy the performance criteria recommended by different seismic codes. Hence a comprehensive retrofitting strategy with building code compliance are prerequisites to avoid infrastructural and economic losses due to seismic activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plastic waste has increased significantly in recent years as a result of fast population growth and urbanization. Studies on the incorporation of plastic aggregates as a substitution for natural aggregates in concrete are needed to successfully reduce both adverse environmental impact and the depletion of natural resources. The objective of this research was to investigate the use of plastic as a partial substitution for natural coarse aggregates in concrete. For this purpose, seven concrete mixes were produced using 0, 10, 15, and 20% plastic coarse aggregates to replace natural aggregates with and without silica fume of similar replacement levels with cement. Fresh density, workability, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, stress–strain response, and Poisson's ratio were observed to study the fresh as well as hardened properties of concrete mixtures. Indoor and outdoor thermal performance and thermo-gravimetric analysis were also investigated. The results revealed that the plastic aggregates' incorporation improved the workability of concrete; however, it negatively influenced the fresh density and mechanical properties of concrete. The compressive and tensile strengths of plastic aggregate concrete without silica fume were reduced by 32 and 33%, respectively. The reduction in strength could be associated with the smooth texture of plastic aggregates. The addition of silica fume with plastic aggregates resulted in denser concrete and improved mechanical properties. In general, the performance of plastic aggregates as a partial replacement for natural aggregates was satisfactory, which suggests their possible use to produce eco-friendlier concrete. This article analyzes the intimidations of Fifth-Generation War (5GW) and its threats national cohesion of Pakistan. 5GW is a battle of information and perception. Misinformation, propaganda, non-state actors, and media movements generate disorder and anger. The adversaries spread misleading reports, fake news, and propaganda through social media tools. Pakistan is located in a very significant geopolitical region in the world. Pakistan is a victim of this latest war launched by anti-state intelligence agencies. In the present age, Pakistan is confronted with multiple challenges, like social & economic unrest and ethnic and sectarian divisions. Qualitatively research design is being implemented to investigate the nature of 5th Generation War in this article. This paper aims to explore the impact of employee age and industrial experience on extrinsic psychosocial stressors that may influence the productivity of workers. Using an integrated theoretical approach, this study examines four extrinsic psychosocial stressors, i.e. work environment, infrastructure, economy and country environment. The data were collected from Pakistani construction industry through a questionnaire survey approach. The study's findings show that workers having diverse ages did not agree over several work environments and economy-related psychosocial stressors, whereas workers having diverse industrial experiences were in disagreement over numerous country environment and economy-related psychosocial stressors. The study concludes that firms need to mitigate the work environment related psychosocial stressors in young workers, such as, over congestion and inaccessibility to different tools, high temperature and workspace atmosphere. Moreover, organizational and governmental support are direly needed to overcome the country environment-related psychosocial stressors of less experienced workers who are more susceptible to these stressors due to the complex organizational culture, occurrence of natural disasters and unfavourable economic and political state of the country.
