Abstract

We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of sintered SiGe alloys, compare them with new and previous experimental measurements, and evaluate their potential for further improvement. The theoretical approach is validated by extensive comparison of predicted bulk mobility, thermopower, and thermal conductivity, for varying Ge and doping concentrations, in the 300-1000K temperature range. The effect of grain boundaries is then included for Si0.8Ge0.2 sintered nanopowders and used to predict optimized values of the thermoelectric figure of merit at different grain sizes. Our calculations suggest that further optimization of current state of the art n-type (p-type) material would be feasible, possibly leading to ∼5% (4%) ZT enhancement at 1000 K and 16% (6%) at room temperature. Even larger enhancements should be possible if the phonon scattering probability of the grain boundaries could be increased beyond its present value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Several theoretical studies are conducted to explain the different thermoelectric properties exhibited by the nanostructured [Si.sub.1-x][Ge.sub.x] alloys. An increase in the phonon scattering probability of the grain boundaries is shown to lead to significant enhancement of the current state of the alloys.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The major burden of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in childhood is related to its high frequency and the large number of hospitalizations, medical consultations, tests and drug prescriptions. The adherence to evidence-based recommendations for AGE management in European countries is unknown. The purpose of the study was to compare hospital medical interventions for children admitted for AGE with recommendations reported in the European Societies of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and Pediatric Infectious Diseases guidelines. METHODS: A multicenter prospective study was conducted in 31 Italian hospitals. Data on children were collected through an online clinical reporting form and compared with European Societies of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and Pediatric Infectious Diseases guidelines for AGE. The main outcomes were the inappropriate hospital admissions and the percentage of compliance to the guidelines (full >90%, partial >80% compliance) based on the number and type of violations to evidence-based recommendations. RESULTS: Six-hundred and twelve children (53.6% male, mean age 22.8 ± 15.4 months) hospitalized for AGE were enrolled. Many hospital admissions (346/602, 57.5%) were inappropriate. Once admitted, 20.6% (126/612) of children were managed in full compliance with the guidelines and 44.7% (274/612) were managed in partial compliance. The most common violations were requests for microbiologic tests (404; 35.8%), diet changes (310; 27.6%) and the prescription of non-recommended probiotics (161; 14.2%), antibiotics (103; 9.2%) and antidiarrheal drugs (7; 0.6%). CONCLUSIONS: Inappropriate hospital admissions and medical interventions are still common in the management of children with AGE in Italy. Abstract

The importance of rhinosinusitis finally reached pediatricians' attention a few years ago, and it has now been demonstrated that it is medically important and has a considerable socioeconomic impact in childhood. These guidelines, which have been prepared with and approved by many Italian Scientific Societies, are based on the most recent findings in the fields of clinical symptoms, imaging and microbiology tests for the diagnosis of acute rhinosinusitis, and efficacy evidence concerning antibiotic treatment and non-antibiotic adjuvant treatment. A Pubmed search using the key words "sinusitis", "rhinosinusitis", "child" and "antibiotic treatment", and the limits "human studies" and "English language", led to the selection of more than 2,700 articles published between 1966 and 2007. These guidelines are based on the 125 that were considered truly relevant and reflect the most widely shared positions concerning the diagnosis and treatment of acute, subacute and recurrent rhinosinusitis in children.

Abstract

In order to evaluate the role of Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia pneumoniae, we studied 613 children aged 2-14 years who were hospitalized for community-acquired lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs). The patients were enrolled in the study by 21 centers in different regions of Italy from May 1998 through April 1999. Paired serum samples were obtained on admission and after 4-6 weeks to assay the titers of M. pneumoniae and C. pneumoniae antibodies. Nasopharyngeal aspirates for the detection of M. pneumoniae and C. pneumoniae were obtained on admission. Acute M. pneumoniae infections in 210 patients (34.3%) and acute C. pneumoniae infections in 87 (14.1%) were diagnosed. Fifteen of the 18 children with M. pneumoniae and/or C. pneumoniae infections whose treatments were considered clinical failures 4-6 weeks after enrollment had not been treated with macrolides. Our study confirms that M. pneumoniae and/or C. pneumoniae plays a significant role in community-acquired LRTIs in children of all ages and that such infections have a more complicated course when not treated with adequate antimicrobial agents.

Abstract

Abstract: Here are reported for the first time electrochemical data on all-solid-state lithium microbatteries using crystalline sputtered V2O5 thin films as cathode materials and LiPON as solid electrolyte. The stable specific capacity of 30µAh/cm2 found with a 2.4µm thick film competes very well with the best values obtained for solid state microbatteries using amorphous films. With the challenge of decreasing the temperature of heat treatment for sputtered LiCoO2 thin films, we show that a temperature of 500°C combined with an optimized bias sputtering (-50V) allows to get highly crystalline deposits, to minimize the presence of Co3O4 and to suppress any trace of the cubic phase. At the same time the theoretical specific capacity is reached in the 4.2V-3V range and a good cycling behaviour is achieved with a high capacity of 50µAh/cm2/µm after 140 cycles at 10µA.cm2. Abstract: We report here the first in situ Raman microspectrometry study of the electrochemical lithium insertion and de-insertion reaction into crystalline sputtered Li x V2O5 thin films (0≤ x ≤0.94) in liquid electrolyte. We show that the orthorhombic Pmmn symmetry of the pristine material is kept upon lithium intercalation in the Li x V2O5 film (0≤ x ≤ 0.94). In fact, a subsequent and unexpected solid solution behaviour is evidenced, leading to the typical Raman fingerprint of the ɛ-LiV2O5 phase for the Li0.94V2O5 composition. After the charge, a complete recovery of the local structure is found, in good accord with the excellent electrochemical reversibility exhibited by these thin films. Such limited structural changes differ from that usually observed for the bulk material, which emphasizes the key role of the microstructure and morphology on the nature and magnitude of the structural rearrangements induced by the lithium insertion process. Abstract

The electrochemical behavior of all-solid-state lithium microbatteries using crystalline sputtered V2O5 thin films as cathode materials and Li phosphorus oxynitride as solid electrolytes is reported. Vanadium oxide films are deposited by radio-frequency (rf) magnetron sputtering. The results for thin-film batteries using c-V2O5 are discussed and compared with those known for all-solid-state lithium microbatteries usually using amorphous V2O5. Depending on the oxygen flow rate used during deposition, porous or dense crystalline V2O5 films are obtained. The stable discharge capacity of 35 µAh/cm² achieved at a current density of 10 µA/cm² between 3.8 and 2.15 V with a 0.6 µm thick porous film can be improved with the use of a 1 µm thick dense film, which delivers 50 µAh/cm² with high stability upon cycling. At a high current density of 100 µA/cm², a specific capacity of 25 µAh/cm² is obtained without any capacity fading over 100 cycles. This work shows that crystalline V205 thin films prepared by rf magnetron reactive sputtering are attractive cathode materials for rechargeable all-solid-state thin-film lithium microbatteries. Abstract: The kinetics of the electrochemical lithium insertion reaction in crystalline V2O5 thin films in liquid electrolyte has been investigated using ac impedance spectroscopy. The experimental data are obtained for sputtered films characterized by a common morphology corresponding to an arrangement of V2O5 platelets perpendicular to the substrate (h 00 or 110 preferred orientation). The results are discussed as a function of the Li content for 0< x <1 in Li x V2O5, the film thickness in the range of 0.6–3.6μm and temperature 15–55°C. The moderate evolution of the chemical diffusion coefficient D vs. the lithium content is related with the specific structural response of these pure thin film materials which exhibit a single phase behavior. A comparison of the kinetic parameters for different thickness values allows to indicate the same Li diffusion rate whatever the film thickness and the diffusion pathway does not correspond to the thickness but to the length of the edge (≈1μm) of V2O5 platelets. For the first time, an experimental evaluation of the activation energy for Li diffusion in crystalline V2O5 is obtained. A value of 0.98eV is found for a diffusion phenomenon along the b direction. This work demonstrates the excellent capacity–rate performance as well as the efficient and homogeneous behavior of these oriented films can be explained by their specific microstructure. Abstract: Vanadium pentoxide thin films have been prepared by reactive DC magnetron sputtering from a vanadium metal target without annealing posttreatment. XRD, Raman and electrochemical experiments on 800nm thin films show a high crystallinity of the deposits. Chronopotentiometric measurements performed in the two voltage range 3.8–2.8 and 3.8–2.15V have demonstrated the promoting effect of the h 00 preferred orientation of V2O5 films in terms of polarization, kinetics and rate capability. The same reproducible deposition method is successfully applied to get films thicker than 1μm in order to optimize the specific capacity. Effective high specific capacities can be then obtained with films 2.4μm thick tested at high constant current density (100μAcm−2): a stable capacity of 75μAhcm−2 is available over 100 cycles in the 3.8–2.8V potential range and 130μAhcm−2 are still recovered in the range 3.8–2.15V. These results indicate a promising cycling behaviour can be expected with thick films exhibiting a preferred orientation corresponding to V2O5 planes perpendicular to the substrate. 40. Infection with the delta agent in children.

Abstract

Serological evidence of infection with the hepatitis B virus associated delta agent (delta) was found in 34 of 270 Italian children with HBsAg-positive liver disease. In different histological forms of chronic HBsAg hepatitis the prevalence of delta infection increased in parallel with the activity of the disease and was maximal in children with cirrhosis. During two to seven years of follow up the hepatitis deteriorated in 38% of the 34 patients with delta infection and ameliorated only in 9%. By contrast the disease usually ran a mild course in the 236 delta-negative carriers of HBsAg, with remission in 55% of these children and deterioration in only 7%. The outcome of chronic hepatitis associated with delta infection was not influenced by treatment with steroids and azathioprine. Chronic delta infection in children is usually accompanied by serious liver disease, that has a tendency to progress and is unresponsive to conventional immunosuppressive treatment. Abstract

Changes in the ecology of Salmonella organisms impose the use of highly specific chemotherapeutic agents both in animals and in attempts to combat Salmonella typhi in man. An examination of the inhibition achieved by the use of a number of antibiotics against strains isolated from 52 hospitalized patients in our clinic, over the past three years, has shown the majority of strains to be sensitive to gentamicin (78%), followed by nalidixic acid, nitrofurantoin, chloramphenicol (44%) and other chemotherapeutic agents, including the combination of sulphamethoxazole and trimethoprim (28%) and ampicillin (11%).

Abstract

Forty-two children with HBsAg positive chronic hepatitis who received immunosuppressive therapy underwent multiple liver biopsies over periods ranging from one to five years. The presence of HBsAg, HBcAg, deltaAg, antinuclear antibodies and immune complexes was studied using immunofluorescent techniques. The data were correlated with the clinical status of the patients. The presence of HBsAg, HBcAg and deltaAg remained unchanged throughout the study in most positive patients. All 30 HBcAg positive cases were still positive at the end of the study. One of the negative cases became positive. Eight of the ten delta antigen positive cases showed no change. Intrahepatic immunoglobulins, immune complexes and antinuclear antibodies showed a decrease in positivity in a significant number of patients. Fifteen of the 36 patients positive for intrahepatic immunoglobulins became negative during the study, as did 12 of the 29 immune complex positive subjects and 22 of the 33 antinuclear antibody-positive cases. The persistence of HBV antigens seems to be independent of the clinical course. On the other hand, the persistence of positive immunological indices corresponds to a less favourable outcome.

50. Sputtered Crystalline V2O5Thin Films for All-Solid-State Lithium Microbatteries

Abstract

The electrochemical behavior of all-solid-state lithium microbatteries using crystalline sputtered V2O5thin films as cathode materials and Li phosphorus oxynitride as solid electrolytes is reported. Vanadium oxide films are deposited by radio-frequency (rf) magnetron sputtering. The results for thin-film batteries using c-V2O5are discussed and compared with those known for all-solid-state lithium microbatteries usually using amorphous V2O5. Depending on the oxygen flow rate used during deposition, porous or dense crystalline V2O5films are obtained. The stable discharge capacity of 35μAh/cm2achieved at a current density of 10μA/cm2between 3.8 and 2.15 V with a 0.6μmthick porous film can be improved with the use of a 1μmthick dense film, which delivers 50μAh/cm2with high stability upon cycling. At a high current density of 100μA/cm2, a specific capacity of 25μAh/cm2is obtained without any capacity fading over 100 cycles. This work shows that crystalline V2O5thin films prepared by rf magnetron reactive sputtering are attractive cathode materials for rechargeable all-solid-state thin-film lithium microbatteries.
