Abstract

BACKGROUND: Patients with obstructive left main coronary artery disease are usually treated with coronary-artery bypass grafting (CABG). Randomized trials have suggested that drug-eluting stents may be an acceptable alternative to CABG in selected patients with left main coronary disease. METHODS: We randomly assigned 1905 eligible patients with left main coronary artery disease of low or intermediate anatomical complexity to undergo either percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with fluoropolymer-based cobalt-chromium everolimus-eluting stents (PCI group, 948 patients) or CABG (CABG group, 957 patients). Anatomic complexity was assessed at the sites and defined by a Synergy between Percutaneous Coronary Intervention with Taxus and Cardiac Surgery (SYNTAX) score of 32 or lower (the SYNTAX score reflects a comprehensive angiographic assessment of the coronary vasculature, with 0 as the lowest score and higher scores [no upper limit] indicating more complex coronary anatomy). The primary end point was the rate of a composite of death from any cause, stroke, or myocardial infarction at 3 years, and the trial was powered for noninferiority testing of the primary end point (noninferiority margin, 4.2 percentage points). Major secondary end points included the rate of a composite of death from any cause, stroke, or myocardial infarction at 30 days and the rate of a composite of death, stroke, myocardial infarction, or ischemia-driven revascularization at 3 years. Event rates were based on Kaplan-Meier estimates in time-to-first-event analyses. RESULTS: At 3 years, a primary end-point event had occurred in 15.4% of the patients in the PCI group and in 14.7% of the patients in the CABG group (difference, 0.7 percentage points; upper 97.5% confidence limit, 4.0 percentage points; P=0.02 for noninferiority; hazard ratio, 1.00; 95% confidence interval, 0.79 to 1.26; P=0.98 for superiority). Abstract

The mite Oxycenus maxwelli (Keifer) (Eriophyidae) is reported for the first time in Brazil infesting olive trees, Olea europaea. Specimens were found on seedlings at Maria da Fé, state of Minas Gerais, in 2007. Although minor symptoms were not noticed, significant damage to plants were observed. There is no reliable evidence of when the mite could have been introduced. It is believed that the mite occurs since the first introductions of olive trees, around 1820, through vegetative propagating material, but the mite remained unnoticed due to the lack of studies with olive trees in Brazil.

Abstract

The presence of the red palm mite, Raoiella indica Hirst, is reported for the first time in Brazil. This invasive mite was found in July 2009 infesting coconut palms and bananas in urban areas of Boa Vista, State of Roraima, in northern Brazil. Comments on the possible pathways of R. indica into the country, present and potential impact of its introduction and mitigating measures to prevent or to delay the mite spread in Brazil are presented.

Abstract

Os ácaros tenuipalpídeos representam importantes pragas para diversas culturas agrícolas por todo o mundo. Durante a prospecção em plantas de Ocimum basilicum no viveiro de plantas medicinais da Universidade Federal de Sergipe no município de São Cristóvão, Sergipe, a ocorrência destes foi observada em 80% das mudas que foram levadas ao laboratório, com o objetivo de caracterizar os danos. As mudas apresentavam sintomas de redução e encarquilhamento do limbo. Foram coletados 100 espécimes destas plantas os quais foram montados em lâminas de microscopia para a identificação taxonômica. Os ácaros foram identificados como Brevipalpus obovatus Donnadieu, 1933 (Tenuipalpidae). Este é o primeiro relato do O. basilicum como hospedeira para B. obovatus na América Latina. The tenuipalpid mites represent important pests for several agricultural crops around the world. During prospection in Ocimum basilicum plants in a medicinal plant nursery of Federal University of Sergipe in São Cristovão District, Sergipe State, Brazil, the occurrence of spider mites was observed in 80% of the seedlings that were taken to the laboratory in order to characterize the damage. Seedlings presented leaf reduction and deformation. About 100 mite specimens were collected from the affected plants and used to mount microscopic slides for taxonomic identification. The mites were identified as Brevipalpus obovatus Donnadieu, 1933 (Tenuipalpidae). This is the first report of O. basilicum as a host plant to B. obovatus in Latin America.

This article documents the addition of 283 microsatellite marker loci to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Abstract

National audience; DNA based methods have revolutionized the field of species diagnostics, and today it has applications for an increasingly number of taxa including several Acari. The media excitement around the international Barcode project is an example. Besides their potential for species identification, DNA marker techniques are nowadays routinely being also used for addressing ecological, evolutionary, phylogenetic and genetic questions. In contrast to other groups of plant mites and despite the economical relevance of many species of Eriophyoidea, very few scientists have dared so far to use DNA methods for the study of this group of mites; their very small size being certainly the major cause. However, DNA]based techniques are now well established and their advantages as well as limitations have been realized. We review here the main techniques used for identification and discus on their applicability in eriophyoids. Main results from the literature will be examined. We will emphasize prospects and challenges of the molecular genetics approach to study several essential issues of the eriophyoid biology to: clarify suspect synonymies, test hypothesis of cryptic species; examine the occurrence of biotypes, especially in rapport to virus ability; understand colonization patterns of invasive species; and use of biological control agents against invasive plants. We will discuss these questions that can be link to economical issues, together with more fundamental aspects as reviewing the phylogeny of the Eriophyoidea. Much is now biology.
