Growing interests in the application of behavioral sciences to animal production has enabled the progressive development of techniques for the improvement of handling practices aiming to reach high productive yields in a sustainable framework. Selective and differential reproduction for specific and desirable behavioral traits in the Canarian camel breed (Camelus dromedarius), after ethofuncional characterization, can be applied to achieve an increase in the adaptive value of the animals to the pressures of the livestock production systems in which they are reared. This initiative is part of a strategic plan for the conservation, improvement and promotion of an autochthonous endangered breed through alternative ways of profitable and sustainable use of the breed and its products. The qualification of the human team involved, as well as the mechanical optimization of the camel rearing systems, are pivotal objectives in applied ethology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anatomical and locomotive understanding of natural gaits in camels is an essential tool for its kinetic and kinematic evaluation as they constitute elements of marked predictability for functional performance, energy expenditure and training response. Biomechanics evaluation, complemented with applied thermography analysis, makes possible the precise delimitation for those risk factors potentially associated with musculoskeletal injuries derived from the physical work these animals do, mainly classified as multifactorial etiology pathologies. Speed competitions, recreational exhibitions or tourist walks are some of the motor activities carried out by camels, being outlined by strong cultural roots in specific geographical regions. In particular, Canarian camel breed (Camelus dromedarius) is marginally relegated for touristic activities. As an autochthonous endangered breed, the systematized adjustment of locomotor performance records will enrich the viability and sustainability of its conservation programmes, selective breeding and functional revaluation actions. Conservation and sustainable management of local animal genetic resources and their diversity are priority tasks within a national and international framework. Officially listed as a threatened native breed, Canarian camels (Camelus dromedarius) are marginally reduced to the eastern islands of the archipelago and mainly used in touristic activities; sporadically, these animals are used for production of food and other products. Morphostructural and zoometric characterization of Canarian camel will lead to the identification of those genetic-based characters or features involved in productive functional activities. The present methodological proposal is framed into a context of opportunity and resurgence of a potential production industry throughout the establishment of the baselines for a sustainable selective breeding program in this livestock species. Neophobia is an ecologically relevant behaviour that arises through a cognitive assessment of novel stimuli. We assessed the responses of 8 captive fallow deer, using a novel object test and a qualitative behaviour assessment scale. The categorical principal component analysis revealed that the variability present in the population for the neophobia test explained 69.94% of the variance found in the herd studied. It was detected that the variables were from poorly correlated to highly correlated, both positively and negatively. The negative correlations between the measured variables varied from -0.005 (between the time the animal is distracted and the age) up to -0.912 (between age and the hierarchy), and the positives from 0.005 (between the time of approximation up to a meter and the age) until 0.831 ( Between the time the animal is distracted and the time that the animal takes to pay attention but remains motionless).These findings highlight the nature of neophobic responses in ungulates under captivity and how social structure impacts them [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stemming from The Worldwide Donkey Breeds Project, an initiative aiming at connecting international researchers and entities working with the donkey species, molecularly tested pedigree analyses were carried out to study the genetic diversity, structure and historical evolution of the Andalusian donkey breed since the 1980s to infer a model to study the situation of international endangered donkey breeds under the remarkably frequent unknown genetical background status behind them. Demographic and genetic variability parameters were evaluated using ENDOG (v4.8). Pedigree completeness and generation length were quantified for the four gametic pathways. Despite mean inbreeding was low, highly inbred animals were present in the pedigree. Average coancestry, relatedness, and non-random mating degree trends were computed. The effective population size based on individual inbreeding rate was about half when based on individual coancestry rate. Nei’s distances and equivalent subpopulations number indicated differentiated farms in a highly structured population. Although genetic diversity loss since the founder generations could be considered small, intraherd breeding policies and the excessive contribution of few ancestors to the gene pool could lead to narrower pedigree bottlenecks. Long average generation intervals could be considered when reducing inbreeding. Wright’s fixation statistics indicated slight inbreeding between farms. Pedigree shallowness suggested applying new breeding strategies to reliably estimate descriptive parameters and control the negative effects of inbreeding, which could indeed, mean the key to preserve such valuable animal resources avoiding the extinction they potentially head towards, making the present model become an international referent when assessing endangered donkey populations. Improving knowledge on the causative polymorphisms or genes regulating the expression of milk quantitative and qualitative traits and their interconnections plays a major role in dairy goat breeding programs and genomic research. This information enables optimization of predictive and selective tools, to obtain better-performing animals to help satisfy market demands more efficiently. Goat milk casein proteins (α S1 , α S2 , β, and κ) are encoded by 4 loci (CSN1S1, CSN1S2, CSN2, and CSN3) clustered within 250 kb on chromosome 6. Among the statistical methods used to identify epistatic interactions in genome-wide qualitative association studies (GWAS), gene-based methods have recently grown in popularity due to their better statistical power and biological interpretability. However, most of these methods make strong assumptions about the magnitude of the relationships between SNP and phenotype, limiting statistical power. Thus, the aims of this study were to quantify the epistatic relationships among 48 SNP in the casein complex on the expression of milk yield and components (fat, protein, dry matter, lactose, and somatic cells) in Murciano-Granadina goats, to explain the qualitative nature of the SNP used to quantify the genotypes produced as a result. Categorical principal component analysis (CATPCA) was used to delimit and group the number of SNP studied depending on their implications in the explanation of milk yield and components variability. Afterward, nonlinear canonical correlation analysis was used to identify relationships among and within the SNP groups detected by CATPCA. Our results suggest that 79.65% of variability in the traits evaluated may be ascribed to the epistatic relationships across and within 7 SNP groups. Two partially overlapping groups of epistatically interrelated SNP were detected: one group of 21 SNP, explaining 57.56% of variability, and another group of 20 SNP, explaining 42.43% (multiple fit ≥ 0.1). Additionally, SNP18, 32, and 36 (CSN1S2, CSN1S1, and CSN2 loci, respectively) were the most significant SNP to explain intragroup epistatic variability (component loading > |0.5|). Conclusively, milk yield and quality may not only depend on the specific casein gene pool of individuals, but may also be relevantly conditioned by the relationships set across and within such genes. Multiple births or twinning in equids are dangerous, undesirable situations that compromise the life of the dam and resulting offspring. However, embryo vitrification and freezing techniques take advantage of individuals whose multiple ovulations allow flushing more fertilised embryos from the oviduct to be collected, increasing the productivity and profitability of reproductive techniques. Embryo preservation is especially important in highly endangered populations such as certain donkey (Equus asinus) breeds; for which conventional reproductive techniques have previously been deemed inefficient. For instance, becoming an effective alternative to artificial insemination with frozen semen to preserve the individuals' genetic material. The objective of this study was to examine the historical foaling records of Andalusian donkeys to estimate prevalence, risk factors, phenotypic and genetic parameters for multiple births, assessing the cumulative foal number born per animal, maximum foal number per birth and multiple birth number per animal. We designed a Bayesian General Animal Mixed Model with single records considering the 'fixed' effects of birth year, birth season, birth month, sex, farm, location, and husbandry system. Age was considered and included as a linear and quadratic covariate. Gibbs sampling reported heritability estimates ranging from 0.18 ± 0.101 to 0.24 ± 0.078. Genetic and phenotypic correlations ranged from 0.496 ± 0.298 to 0.846 ± 0.152 and 0.206 ± 0.063 to 0.607 ± 0.054, respectively. Iron plays an essential role in blood oxygen transport and in muscle physiology. No conclusive data exist in the literature concerning its tissue distribution and behavior following exercise and training. The aim of the present work was to analyze the Fe content in different tissues following a single session of swimming to exhaustion and after swimming training in rats in order to more extensively describe the changes of Fe distribution provoked by exercise. Animals were divided into four groups (n=10): control group at rest, trained group at rest, control group after exercise, and trained group after exercise. First, rats swam until exhaustion and the maximal swimming time was noted. The training protocol consisted of swimming (5 d/week for 3 wk), limiting the time to 60% of the maximum obtained during the first session to exhaustion of each rat. The variables measured were erythrocytes, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, and, Fe in liver, kidney, erythrocytes, heart, muscle, bone, and serum. Variations in plasma volume were also calculated. Tissues presented two different profiles with regard to the changes of Fe concentration provoked by training: those displaying higher values of Fe after training, such as liver, heart, muscle, and serum, and those displaying lower values, such as bone, kidney, and red blood cells. These changes in the distribution of Fe in different tissues could be the result of an increase in the needs and use of Fe, shown by active tissues at exercise, and it is possible that the hormonal changes provoked by stress lead to a different behavior of Fe proteins.

The purpose of this research was to determine the effects of daily physical training on serum and sweat zinc concentrations in professional sportsmen between October and December, during the competing season. Twelve volleyball players and another 12 control subjects have participated in this study. Tests were made in October and December which consisted of a progressive bicycle ergometer test (increasing 30 W every 3 min to reach maximum tolerated power). Blood samples were obtained at rest and immediately after exercise. Total serum zinc increased significantly after maximal exercise in both sportsmen and control subjects. In athletes, the change after exercise was significantly higher in December than in October. The percentage of ultrafiltrable zinc (ZnUf) in October was similar in sportsmen and in controls. In December, however, after exercise, the percentage of ZnUf was higher in athletes. With respect to sweat zinc, it was in the same range both in controls and in sportsmen in October. In December, however, sweat zinc was significantly higher in athletes as compared with the situation in October and with respect to the control group. In October, the zinc concentration of urine was similar for sportsmen and controls. In December, the sportsmen showed an increase in urinary zinc excretion with respect to control subjects. Cortisol in athletes increased significantly after exercise in December. In conclusion, a daily and maintained practice of exercise is probably responsible for an alteration of zinc metabolism. The results suggest that ZnUf control, zinc supplementation and/or stress control appear to be indicated in athletes to prevent the diminution of active ZnUf. In our practical opinion we think that alterations in zinc metabolism with increases in zinc excretion and stress levels lead to a situation of latent fatigue with a decreased endurance.

To describe accurately the mineral changes (Ca and Mg) provoked by swimming, the aims of this study were to analyze those tissues that, with regard to their mineral content, can better classify individuals performing both swimming until exhaustion and swimming as training and to know the shifts of these minerals between different tissues after a single session of swimming until exhaustion and after training. Wistar rats were distributed into 12 groups, six male and six female (N = 10): 1) control rest group (CR); 2) trained rest group (TR); 3) control exercise group (CE); 4) trained exercise group (TE); 5) control recovery group (CER) and 6) trained recovery group (TER). The most informative tissues of Ca and Mg compartmental shifts during exercise have been determined. Discriminant analysis selected heart Ca, muscle Ca and bone Ca, bone Mg, erythrocyte Mg, and serum Mg as the most significant variables. The animals were classified by means of two canonical axes: the first one relates to training situation and sex, and the second one shows the special characteristics of trained male rats. Another independent discriminant analysis applied to male and female groups separately showed that the first canonical axis (control/trained) is basically defined by heart Ca, bone Ca, and erythrocyte Mg (male), and by heart Ca, bone Ca, and bone Mg (female), while the second axis, related to the exercise situations, is defined by the serum Mg levels in both sexes. We think that discriminant analysis is a statistical method capable of explaining physiological processes and classifying individuals performing exercises of different length. It suggests that the homeostasis of Ca and Mg is somewhat different for males and females. Serum magnesium must be considered to distinguish exercise situations. The analysis of these tissues could inform us about the mineral status of the rats and then we could correct possible deficiencies in our research. In this work we have only found different mineral redistributions among tissues. The trained animals have a better mineral recovery capacity than the untrained ones. Training has a different physiological repercussion in male and female rats on the basis of their respective maximal swimming times after training and their mineral behavior.

The aim of this work is to study the effect of training and Mg supplementation on body pools of Mg and on Mg tissue distribution. Forty male Wistar rats were divided into four groups (n = 10): control group (C); trained group (T); Mg-supplemented group (+Mg); and trained and Mg-supplemented group (+MgT). The Mg supplement (1000 ppm of Mg) was given in the drinking water for 21 d. The training consisted of swimming during 60% of maximal swimming time obtained in the first session to exhaustion, during 3 wk (5 d a week). The variables measured were: erythrocytes (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hto), total proteins (TP), and Mg in serum, RBC, liver, muscle, bone, and kidney. There was less Mg in liver, muscle, and erythrocyte in trained animals than in control or supplemented animals (T vs C, +MgT vs C and +MgT vs +Mg) (p < 0.01). Trained animals (T and +MgT) showed higher Mg kidney rates than the untrained ones (p < 0.01). There was less bone Mg in control (C) and in supplemented and trained (+MgT) groups than in trained (T) and in supplemented (+Mg) animals (p < 0.01). Serum Mg showed a decreasing concentration profile in the following order: +Mg, +MgT, T, C (p < 0.01). We conclude that Mg supplementation improves bone and serum Mg levels, but this does not affect Mg status in soft tissues. Maintained exercise leads to a diminution of Mg in the aforementioned soft tissues that is not noticeable in serum, probably provoked by an increase of renal excretion.

This study evaluates the consequences of a session of intensive short-duration exercise and Zn supplementation on different hematological variables. Forty male Wistar rats were divided into four groups (n = 10): the first nonsupplemented, maintained at rest (R); the second nonsupplemented, undergoing exercise (E); the third supplemented with Zn, kept at rest (ZnR); and the fourth supplemented with Zn, undergoing exercise (ZnE). Zinc supplements (200 ppm) were given in drinking water. The exercise consisted of a single session of swimming until exhaustion. At rest, RBC, Hb, and Hto fell (p < 0.05), whereas red cell indices, MCV, and MCH rose (p < 0.05) in +ZnR compared with R; MCHC remained unchanged (ZnR vs R). After exercise, RBC, Hb, and Hto increased significantly in E and in ZnE compared with R and ZnR, respectively. In addition, RBC and Hb were lower (p < 0.01) in ZnE compared with E; however, MCV and MCH were higher (p < 0.05) in the group ZnE vs E. With respect to white blood cells--leukocytes (WBC), lymphocytes (LYMPH), and neutrophils (NEUT)--no significant differences were observed between groups at rest (ZnR vs R). WBC and LYMPH increased significantly in E with respect to the rest situation (E vs R), but this did not happen in supplemented animals (ZnE vs ZnR). Level of pH decreased after exercise both in E and in ZnE, but the fall was lower in the latter. We believe that a single session of swimming until exhaustion leads to an increase in RBC, Hb, and Hto without causing changes in MCV, MCH, and MCHC.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
