3. Actividad física deportiva en una muestra representativa de la población de la Región de Murcia

Abstract

Objetivo: Estimar la prevalencia de realización de actividad física (AF) deportiva intensa en la Región de Murcia según sexo y edad y analizar su asociación con los principales determinantes demográficos, socioeconómicos, así como con otros factores de riesgo cardiovascular. Método: Encuesta sobre una muestra representativa de la población de 18 a 65 años de la Región de Murcia mediante un muestreo aleatorio polietápico con definición de cuotas muestrales. El número de personas entrevistadas fue de 3.091. Se recogió, a través de un cuestionario validado, la frecuencia y duración de realización de AF intensa deportiva durante las 2 semanas previas a la realización de la encuesta. Además, se obtuvo información sobre variables socioeconómicas, hábito tabáquico, presión arterial, peso, talla y una analítica de sangre para determinar los lípidos plasmáticos. La AF intensa o vigorosa (≥ 6 equivalentes a la tasa metabólica basal) se midió en kcal/día y se redujo a h/sem, considerando 3 categorías diferentes: ninguna AF, menos de 2 h/sem, e igual o más de 2 h/sem. Resultados: Globalmente, el 17,8% (intervalo de confianza [IC] del 95%, 16,6-19,0) de la población adulta de la Región de Murcia realiza AF intensa ≥ 2 h/sem. Por sexos las cifras varían siendo el doble en varones (23,1%; IC del 95%, 21,0-25,2) que en las mujeres (12,5%; IC del 95%, 10,9-14,1). En el análisis mediante regresión logística la mayor frecuencia de realización de AF deportiva intensa se asoció con la edad, el nivel de estudios y la situación de empleo. En los varones, además, con la ocupación y la residencia en áreas urbanas. Conclusiones: En el período de estudio, una de cada 5 personas adultas en la Región de Murcia realizó AF deportiva intensa con una frecuencia y duración compatible con la prevención de episodios isquémicos coronarios.

4. Diferencias sociodemográficas en la adhesión al patrón de dieta mediterránea en poblaciones de España

Abstract

Objetivos: Los grupos de nivel social más bajo tienen habitualmente una dieta menos saludable. El objetivo de este estudio es comparar la adhesión al patrón de dieta mediterránea entre diferentes grupos demográficos y sociales de la población adulta. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio transversal en regiones del sur y norte de España, en voluntarios sanos (15.634 varones y 25.812 mujeres) de 29 a 69 años de edad, miembros de la cohorte EPIC en España. Se tuvo en cuenta el consumo de nueve grupos de alimentos para definir el patrón de dieta mediterránea: vegetales, frutas, legumbres, cereales, carne roja, pescado, aceite de oliva, leche y productos lácteos y vino. Se aplicaron dos técnicas de análisis: comparación de la media diaria de consumo de cada grupo, y el cálculo de un escore global para todos los alimentos, por nivel educacional y clase social de origen. Resultados: Los grupos de nivel educacional más bajo consumen mas cereales y legumbres, pero menos vegetales, aceite de oliva (las mujeres), leche y productos lácteos (los varones). El consumo de vino está positivamente asociado con la educación en las mujeres y negativamente asociado en los varones. Calculando una puntuación para medir la adhesión global al patrón de dieta mediterránea, las diferencias por cada grupo de alimentos se compensan, y no hay variaciones según el nivel educacional, aunque existen pequeñas diferencias en la clase social de origen (22,52 en la clase más baja y 21,98 en la clase más alta). El índice de adhesión es más bajo en los adultos jóvenes y mujeres, y ligeramente más alto en las poblaciones del sur (23,53 en Murcia) que en las del norte de España (21,64 en Asturias). Conclusiones: Los resultados sugieren que el patrón de dieta mediterránea es bastante uniforme, al menos en las poblaciones adultas de las áreas incluidas en el estudio.

Abstract

Graphene is a very attractive material for nanomechanical devices and membrane applications. Graphene blisters based on silicon oxide micro-cavities are a simple but relevant example of nanoactuators. A drawback of this experimental set up is that gas leakage through the graphene-SiO2 interface contributes significantly to the total leak rate. Here we study the diffusion of air from pressurized graphene drumheads on SiO2 micro-cavities and propose a straightforward method to improve the already strong adhesion between graphene and the underlying SiO2 substrate, resulting in reduced leak rates. This is carried out by applying controlled and localized ultrahigh pressure (> 10 GPa) with an Atomic Force Microscopy diamond tip. With this procedure, we are able to significantly approach the graphene layer to the SiO2 surface around the drumheads, thus enhancing the interaction between them allowing us to better seal the graphene-SiO2 interface, which is reflected in up to ~ 4 times lower leakage rates. Abstract

Due to the ageing of the world population, a better functional capacity for the elderly is needed. Hence the importance of detecting people at risk of frailty, dependence and death to fulfil an individualized approach. There are models that uses frailty indices, but none that use the Frail-VIG Index, based on the comprehensive geriatric assessment. Three predictive models of frailty, dependency and mortality for 70-year-old in the general population are presented. The risk factors for developing frailty or dependency are female gender, chronicity level 2 or 3, and marriage. For mortality, the risk factors are male gender, low educational level and being frail according to frail-VIG index. In conclusion, the health actions to prevent frailty and dependence should focus on reducing the chronicity level, especially in women. To delay mortality, an individualized approach should be implemented in frail people. Further studies are needed to determine other health and social risk factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Contrary to most materials, graphene exhibits a negative thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), i.e it contracts when heated. This contraction is due to the thermal excitation of low energy out-of-plane vibration modes. These flexural modes have been reported to govern the electronic transport and the mechanical response of suspended graphene. In this work, we systematically investigate the influence of defects in the TEC of suspended graphene membranes. Controlled introduction of low densities of mono-vacancies reduces the graphene TEC, up to one order of magnitude for a defect density of $5\times10^{12}$~cm$^{-2}$ . Our molecular dynamics simulations reproduce the observed trend and show that TEC reduction is due to the suppression of out-of-plane fluctuations caused by the strain fields created by mono-vacancies in their surrounding areas. Abstract

The purpose of this research is to study the connection of global properties of eight young stellar clusters projected in the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) ESO Large Public Survey disk area and their young stellar object population. The analysis in based on the combination of spectroscopic parallax-based reddening and distance determinations with main sequence and pre-main sequence ishochrone fitting to determine the basic parameters (reddening, age, distance) of the sample clusters. The lower mass limit estimations show that all clusters are low or intermediate mass (between 110 and 1800 Mo), the slope Gamma of the obtained present-day mass functions of the clusters is close to the Kroupa initial mass function. On the other hand, the young stellar objects in the surrounding cluster's fields are classified by low resolution spectra, spectral energy distribution fit with theoretical predictions, and variability, taking advantage of multi-epoch VVV observations. All spectroscopically confirmed young stellar objects (except one) are found to be massive (more than 8 Mo). Using VVV and GLIMPSE color-color cuts we have selected a large number of new young stellar object candidates, which are checked for variability and 57% are found to show at least low-amplitude variations. Abstract

We present the first physical characterization of the young open cluster VVV CL041. We spectroscopically observed the cluster main-sequence stellar population and a very-massive star candidate: WR62-2. Abstract

We present an adaptive multi-GPU Exchange Monte Carlo method designed for the simulation of the 3D Random Field Model. The algorithm design is based on a two-level parallelization scheme that allows the method to scale its performance in the presence of faster and GPUs as well as multiple GPUs. The set of temperatures is adapted according to the exchange rate observed from short trial runs, leading to an increased exchange rate at zones where the exchange process is sporadic. Performance results show that parallel tempering is an ideal strategy for being implemented on the GPU, and runs between one to two orders of magnitude with respect to a single-core CPU version, with multi-GPU scaling being approximately $99\%$ efficient. The results obtained extend the possibilities of simulation to sizes of $L = 32, 64$ for a workstation with two GPUs., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures
