Abstract

100 cities in Europe have committed to being pioneers and achieving climate neutrality by 2030. It is crucial to start with the decarbonization of cities because, although they cover only 3 % of the Earth’s land, they produce 72 % of all greenhouse gas emissions. This paper contributes to the city decarbonization research but on a smaller scale. We study the decarbonization potential of a university campus. It is a unique part of a larger urban area. It represents a cross-section of the population of different socio-economic backgrounds and ages, generating irregular schedules and constant movements of people and goods throughout the day. Riga Technical University is one of the pioneer universities in Latvia that has decided to achieve climate neutrality by 2030. This study aims to provide a qualitative review of the potential for improvements and describe the preliminary CO2 simulation model that includes Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions. A particular challenge is the Scope 3 emissions, which focus on changing user habits. A survey of Riga Technical University students and employees was developed and conducted to analyse the most effective solutions for this type of emission. Survey results and future work recommendations are presented together with the model outline.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has recently received significant attention as a key enabler for future 5G-and-beyond terrestrial wireless networks. The applications of AI to satellite communications is also gaining momentum to realize a more autonomous operation with reduced requirements in terms of human intervention. The adoption of AI for satellite communications will set new requirements on computing processors, which will need to support large workloads as efficiently as possible under harsh environmental conditions. In this context, neuromorphic processing (NP) is emerging as a bio-inspired solution to address pattern recognition tasks involving multiple, possibly unstructured, temporal signals and/or requiring continual learning. The key merits of the technology are energy efficiency and capacity for on-device adaptation. In this paper, we highlight potential use cases and applications of NP to satellite communications. We also explore major technical challenges for the implementation of space-based NP focusing on the available NP chipsets.

Abstract

Soiling of the envelope tubes of parabolic trough collectors can significantly reduce their transmittance and hence the overall collector efficiency. There are only a few methods to quantify soiling losses at absorber tubes of parabolic trough collectors. The existing methods are either laboratory based and cannot be applied automatically or they are personnel intense because they can only be used manually inside of operational solar fields. In this work we present a novel device called T-TraCS capable of automatically measuring the transmission of a sample glass during outdoor exposure with the current solar spectrum and imitating the movement of operational parabolic trough collectors. It can be used in resource assessment campaigns in order to better estimate future soiling losses at the tube level or it can be set up inside a solar field in order to measure the tube soiling losses in real time for CSP plant operation. Scattering simulations are presented that correct the measurement raw values of the T-TraCS and a spectrophotometer for their differences to the optics of a receiver tube. The validation with these final measurements shows good agreement with the reference spectrophotometer with a R2 of 0.996. The T-TraCS is therefore capable of automatically determining the soiling induced transmission losses with high accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
