24. Assessing heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils: a new GIS-based Probabilistic Pollution Index (PPI) – case study: Guarda Region, Portugal.

Abstract

Soil contamination by heavy metals is a global agricultural problem, as these elements can be absorbed by plants and transferred to humans through the food pathway. Current contamination assessment methods rely on in situ sample collection, which restricts the evaluation process due to the number of samples that can be analysed and the associated costs. This study addresses the need for a more efficient and cost-effective approach to identifying areas at risk of heavy metal contamination without the logistical constraints of physical sampling. To meet this challenge, we developed a new Probabilistic Pollution Index (PPI), calculated by integrating GIS tools with an 8-parameter probability-risk matrix to identify agricultural areas potentially contaminated by heavy metals. The factors considered included roads, industrial sites, pH levels, soil organic matter content, terrain slope, soil texture, mining areas, and drainage. Each parameter was classified and reclassified to produce a contamination risk map, categorizing each pixel into five levels of risk. To test the PPI, data analysis, parameter classification, and reclassification were applied in the district of Guarda, Portugal. The PPI map revealed that the central portion of the Guarda municipality, along with specific zones in Celorico da Beira, Sabugal, Mêda, and Pinhel, exhibited a high-probability risk of contamination. Given the agricultural expanse within each municipality, enhanced monitoring of heavy metal levels was recommended for Mêda, Pinhel, and Vila Nova de Foz Côa. This index provides a scalable, cost-effective, and easily replicable tool for identifying potential contamination hotspots and the sources and processes of contamination. Designed as a first-line method for large-scale assessments, it supports governmental decision-making and facilitates targeted risk mitigation strategies through a low-cost approach. SUMMARY: A probabilistic contamination index, called the Probabilistic Pollution Index (PPI), has been developed to identify areas susceptible to heavy metal contamination. The PPI is constructed using an 8-parameter probability-risk matrix and calculated with GIS tools, allowing the generation of probability risk maps for each studied parameter and a final PPI map that classifies each pixel into five categories. The methodology for calculating the PPI is cost-effective and easily replicable in other regions, making it a practical tool for broad applications. Abstract

This paper presents the findings of a 12-year study on radon conducted from January 2011 to December 2022 at the Giordan Lighthouse station on the island of Gozo, Malta. Located in the Central Mediterranean, Gozo's strategic position enables effective monitoring of air mass movements between Africa and Europe (from south to north) and between Europe and Central Asia (from west to east). Our research involves an analysis of seasonal and diurnal variations in radon levels, alongside analysis of relevant meteorological variables, clustering of air mass back trajectories, and assessment of local and remote radon production. The findings provide critical insights into the dynamics of atmospheric radon, which are significant not only for the Maltese islands, but also for enhancing our understanding of transcontinental radon transport in the Central Mediterranean, a region that has remained largely unexplored. 33. Psychological outcomes of dementia risk estimation in MCI patients: Results from the PreDADQoL project.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the impact of biomarker‐based dementia risk estimation in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and their care partners is critical for patient care. METHODS: MCI patients and study partners were counseled on Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarker and dementia risk was disclosed. Data on mood, quality of life (QoL), and satisfaction with life (SwL) were obtained 1 week and 3 months after disclosure. RESULTS: Seventy‐five dyads were enrolled, and two‐thirds of the patients opted for biomarker testing. None of the participants experienced clinically relevant depression or anxiety after disclosure. All dyads reported moderate to high QoL and SwL throughout the study. Patients reported more subthreshold depressive symptoms 1 week and lower QoL and SwL 3 months after disclosure. In patients, depression (odds ratio [OR]: 0.76) and anxiety (OR: 0.81) were significant predictors for the decision against biomarker testing. DISCUSSION: No major psychological harm is to be expected in MCI patients and care partners after dementia risk disclosure. 35. Health care in rural areas: proposal of a new telemedicine program assisted from the reference health centers, for a sustainable digitization and its contribution to the carbon footprint reduction

Abstract

Introduction: This paper studies and quantifies the environmental benefits of implementing a new telemedicine service for users of the public health system in a rural area of Alicante (Spain). The proposed telemedicine service is based on carrying out 20% of the follow-on consultations with a specialist virtually from the Reference Health Centres with the support of qualified staff. This way of providing medical care remotely will be a good transition to fully online medical services, especially for the elderly. The proposed model avoids the displacement of users to the Alcoy Hospital, reducing the distances to be travelled, which will be directly reflected in a reduction of the emission of pollutants (carbon footprint) generated by patients' vehicles. Methods: Data from the Alcoy Health Department were used for 2019, the last year of normal activity of the health centres before Covid-19. Using data from the Department's health management report and the emission factors of the vehicles, we calculated the distances, hours, litres of fuel saved, as well as the tonnes of CO2 equivalent, CO2, CH4 and N2O. Results: With the implementation of this type of telemedicine, journeys would be avoided, saving 447,279 km, 7,580 h and 38,019 L of fuel. The emission into the atmosphere of 79.26 metric tons of CO2, 74.5 kg of CH4 and 487.28 kg of N2O per year would be avoided. Conclusions: The implementation of this telemedicine service contributes to a high degree to: (a) increasing the environmental sustainability of the rural health sector thanks to the reduction of traffic emissions (saving 9% of pollutants compared to the current system), (b) decongesting the health system by reducing face-to-face visits to specialists, (c) increasing the quality of life of patients by avoiding road travel (d) promoting the digitalisation of the rural population.

42. Framework for Designing Motivational Augmented Reality Applications in Vocational Education and Training

Abstract

One of the greatest advantages of augmented reality (AR) in education is that AR increases student motivation. Nevertheless, there is a gap between the research on student motivation in AR and the definition of frameworks to inform and guide the design and development of AR applications that effectively support student motivation. In this paper, we attempt to bridge that gap as we introduce and evaluate a framework for designing motivational AR applications. Our framework has been built upon three theoretical foundations: motivational design, universal design for learning and co-creation. The evaluation study was conducted with 58 chemistry students enrolled in the vocational education and training (VET) program for Laboratory Operations, and we found that the framework not only effectively supports the four dimensions of Keller's (2010) ARCS (attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction) model of motivation, but also demonstrates exceptional results in the Attention and Confidence dimensions of motivation.
