The infall and merger scenario of massive clusters in the Milky Way's potential well, as one of the Milky Way formation mechanisms, is reexamined to understand how the stars of the merging clusters are redistributed during and after the merger process using, for the first time, simulations with a high resolution concentrated in the 300 pc around the Galactic center. We adopted simulations developed in the framework of the "Modelling the Evolution of Galactic Nuclei" (MEGaN) project. We compared the evolution of representative clusters in the mass and concentration basis in the vicinity of a supermassive black hole. We used the spatial distribution, density profile, and the $50\%$ Lagrange radius (half mass radius) as indicators along the complete simulation to study the evolutionary shape in physical and velocity space and the final fate of these representative clusters. We detect that the least massive clusters are quickly (<10 Myr) destroyed. Instead, the most massive clusters have a long evolution, showing variations in the morphology, especially after each passage close to the supermassive black hole. The deformation of the clusters depends on the concentration, with general deformations for the least concentrated clusters and outer strains for the more concentrated ones. At the end of the simulation, a dense concentration of stars belonging to the clusters is formed. The particles that belong to the most massive and most concentrated clusters are concentrated in the innermost regions, meaning that the most massive and concentrated clusters contribute with a more significant fraction of particles to the final concentration, which suggests that the population of stars of the nuclear star cluster formed through this mechanism comes from massive clusters rather than low-mass globular clusters., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

The projected density distribution of type ab RR Lyrae (RRab) stars was characterised from the innermost regions of the Milky Way to the halo, with the aim of placing constraints on the Galaxys evolution. The compiled sample (N_RRab = 64,850) stems from fundamental mode RR Lyrae variables identified by the VVV, OGLE, and Gaia surveys. The distribution is well fitted by three power laws over three radial intervals. In the innermost region (R < 2.2 deg) the distribution follows Sigma_RRab[1] propto R ^(-0.94 +- 0.051), while in the external region the distribution adheres to Sigma_RRab[2] propto R^(-1.50 +- 0.019) for 2.2 deg< R <8.0 deg and Sigma_RRab[3] propto R ^(-2.43 +- 0.043) for 8.0 deg < R <30.0 deg. Conversely, the cumulative distribution of red clump (RC) giants exhibits a more concentrated distribution in the mean, but in the central R < 2.2 deg the RRab population is more peaked, whereas globular clusters (GCs) follow a density power law (Sigma_GCs propto R ^(-1.59 +- 0.060) for R<30.0 deg) similar to that of RRab stars, especially when considering a more metal-poor subsample ([Fe/H]<-1.1 dex). The main conclusion emerging from the analysis is that the RRab distribution favours the star cluster infall and merger scenario for creating an important fraction (>18 %) of the central Galactic region. The radii containing half of the populations (half populations radii) are R_H=6.8 deg (0.99 kpc), R_H =4.2 deg (0.61 kpc), and R_H =11.9 deg (1.75 kpc) for the RRab stars, RC giants, and GCs, respectively. Finally, merely 1% of the stars have been actually discovered in the innermost region (R < 35 pc) out of the expected (based on our considerations) total number of RRab therein: N sim 1,562. The VVV microlensing search has recently surveyed the region of the Galactic plane at b=0 within -10.00 < l < 10.44 deg. in the near-infrared (IR), discovering hundreds of microlensing events. In this paper we explore the microlensing events with background sources that might be located in the far disk of the Galaxy, beyond the bulge. We discuss the possible configurations for the microlensing lenses and sources located at different places within the Galactic plane. Then we search for these events using the local red clump centroids of the VVV near-IR color-magnitude diagrams. According to the estimated distances and proper motions, N=20 events may have sources located in the far disk. The candidates for far-disk sources show on average longer timescales (tE= 49.3 +- 7.9 days) than the mean of the timescale distribution for the bulge red clump sources (tE= 36.4 +- 1.1 days). We conclude that the population of microlensing events in the region -10.00 < l < 10.44, -0.46 < b < 0.65 deg. contains a non-negligible number of events with candidate far-disk sources (~ 11 %). Our results are relevant in view of the future microlensing plans with the Roman Space Telescope (formerly WFIRST) in the near-IR., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures and 2 tables. Windows of low extinction in the Milky Way (MW) have been used along the past decades for the study of the Galactic structure and the stellar population across the inner bulge and disk. Here we report the analysis of another low extinction near-IR window discovered by the VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea Survey. VVV WIN 1733$-$3349 is about half a degree in size and is conveniently located right in the MW plane, at Galactic coordinates $(l, b) = (-5.2, -0.3)$. The mean extinction of VVV WIN 1733$-$3349 is $A_{Ks} = 0.61\pm0.08$ mag, which is much smaller than the extinction in the surrounding area. The excess in the star counts is consistent with the reduced extinction, and complemented by studying the distribution of red clump (RC) stars. Thanks to the strategic low-latitude location of VVV WIN 1733$-$3349, we are able to interpret their RC density fluctuations with the expected overdensities due to the presence of the spiral arms beyond the bulge. In addition, we find a clear excess in the number of microlensing events within the window, which corroborates our interpretation that VVV WIN 1733$-$3349 is revealing the far side of the MW bulge., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. We search for microlensing events in fields along the Galactic minor axis, ranging from the Galactic center to -3.7

We report the discovery of VVV-WIT-04, a near-infrared variable source towards the Galactic disk located ~0.2 arcsec apart from the position of the radio source PMN J1515-5559. The object was found serendipitously in the near-IR data of the ESO public survey VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV). Our analysis is based on variability, multicolor, and proper motion data from VVV and VVV eXtended surveys, complemented with archive data at longer wavelengths. We suggest that VVV-WIT-04 has an extragalactic origin as the near-IR counterpart of PMN J1515-5559. The Ks-band light-curve of VVV-WIT-04 is highly variable and consistent with that of an Optically Violent Variable (OVV) quasar. The variability in the near-IR can be interpreted as the redshifted optical variability. Residuals to the proper motion varies with the magnitude suggesting contamination by a blended source. Alternative scenarios, including a transient event such as a nova or supernova, or even a binary microlensing event are not in agreement with the available data., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. We search for microlensing events in the zero-latitude area of the Galactic Bulge using the VVV Survey near-IR data. We have discovered a total sample of $N=630$ events within an area covering $20.68 deg^2$ between the years 2010 and 2015. In this paper we describe the search and present the data for the final sample, including near-IR magnitudes, colors and proper motions, as well as the standard microlensing parameters. We use the near-IR Color-Magnitude and Color-Color Diagram to select $N_{RC}=290$ events with red-clump sources to analyze the extinction properties of the sample in the central region of the Galactic plane. The timescale distribution and its dependence in the longitude axis is presented. The mean timescale decreases as we approach the Galactic minor axis ($b=0$ deg). Finally, we give examples of special microlensing events, such as binaries, short timescale events, and events with strong parallax effect., Comment: 51 pages, 26 figures, 4 tables. We report the discovery of KMT-2018-BLG-1292Lb, a super-Jovian $M_{\rm planet} = 4.5\pm 1.3\,M_J$ planet orbiting an F or G dwarf $M_{\rm host} = 1.5\pm 0.4\,M_\odot$, which lies physically within ${\cal O}(10\,\pc)$ of the Galactic plane. The source star is a heavily extincted $A_I\sim 5.2$ luminous giant that has the lowest Galactic latitude, $b=-0.28^\circ$, of any planetary microlensing event. The relatively blue blended light is almost certainly either the host or its binary companion, with the first explanation being substantially more likely. This blend dominates the light at $I$ band and completely dominates at $R$ and $V$ bands. Hence, the lens system can be probed by follow-up observations immediately, i.e., long before the lens system and the source separate due to their relative proper motion. The system is well characterized despite the low cadence $\Gamma=0.15$--$0.20\,{\rm hr^{-1}}$ of observations and short viewing windows near the end of the bulge season. For the first time we detected microlensing events at zero latitude in the Galactic bulge using the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea Survey (VVV) data. We have discovered a total sample of N = 630 events within an area covering 20.7 sq. deg. Using the near-IR color magnitude diagram we selected N = 291 red clump sources, allowing us to analyse the longitude dependence of microlensing across the central region of the Galactic plane. We thoroughly accounted for the photometric and sampling efficiency. The spatial distribution is homogeneous, with the number of events smoothly increasing toward the Galactic center. We find a slight asymmetry, with a larger number of events toward negative longitudes than positive longitudes, that is possibly related with the inclination of the bar along the line of sight. Stellar mergers are estimated to be common events in the Galaxy. The best studied stellar merger case to date is V1309 Sco (= Nova Scorpii 2008) which was originally misclassified as a Nova event. Later identified as the merger of the components of a cool overcontact binary system with 1.52 Msun and 0.16 Msun, V1309 Sco showed an initial period of P = 1.4 days before the merger. Post-outburst evolution demonstrated that V1309 Sco was unlike the typical Classical Novae and Symbiotic Recurrent Novae with significant dust production around it, and indicated that the system may become a post-AGB (or pre-PN) soon. Here we present a study of V1309 Sco about ten years after the outburst, based on near-IR variability and colour data from the ESO surveys VISTA Variables in the V\'{i}a L\'actea (VVV) and VVV eXtended (VVVX). We find that reasonable equilibrium in this stellar merger is being reached and that the star has settled into a nearly constant magnitude. A dramatic change in its near-IR colours from (J-Ks) = 1.40 in 2010 to (J-Ks) = 0.42 in 2015 and a possible low amplitude periodic signal with P = 0.49 days in the post-outburst data are consistent with a "blue straggler" star, predicted to be formed from a stellar merger., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 6 pages and 4 figures

Deep near-IR images from the VVV Survey were used to search for RR Lyrae type ab (RRab) stars within 100' from the Galactic Centre (GC). A sample of 960 RRab stars were discovered. We use the reddening-corrected magnitudes in order to isolate RRab belonging to the GC. The mean period for our RRab sample is $P=0.5446$ days, yielding a mean metallicity of $[Fe/H] = -1.30$ dex and a median distance from the Sun of $D=8.05$. We measure the RRab surface density using the less reddened region sampled here, finding $1000$ RRab/sq deg at a projected Galactocentric distance $R_G=1.6$ deg. This implies a large total mass ($M>10^9 M_\odot$) for the old and metal-poor population contained inside $R_G$. We measure accurate relative proper motions, from which we derive tangential velocity dispersions of $\sigma V_l = 125.0$ and $\sigma V_b = 124.1$ km/s along the Galactic longitude and latitude coordinates, respectively. The fact that these quantities are similar indicate that the bulk rotation of the RRab population is negligible, and implies that this population is supported by velocity dispersion. There are two main conclusions of this study. First, the population as a whole is no different from the outer bulge RRab, predominantly a metal-poor component that is shifted respect the Oosterhoff type I population defined by the globular clusters in the halo. Second, the RRab sample, as representative of the old and metal-poor stellar population in the region, have high velocity dispersions and zero rotation, suggesting a formation via dissipational collapse., Comment: 13 figures, 2 tables, accepted in APJ

We search for microlensing events in the highly reddened areas surrounding the Galactic center using the near-IR observations with the VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea Survey (VVV). We report the discovery of 182 new microlensing events, based on observations acquired between 2010 and 2015. We present the color-magnitude diagrams of the microlensing sources for the VVV tiles b332, b333, and b334, which were independently analyzed, and show good qualitative agreement among themselves. We detect an excess of microlensing events in the central tile b333 in comparison with the other two tiles, suggesting that the microlensing optical depth keeps rising all the way to the Galactic center. We derive the Einstein radius crossing time for all of the observed events. The observed event timescales range from $t_E = 5$ to $200$ days. The resulting timescale distribution shows a mean timescale of $=30.91$ days for the complete sample ($N = 182$ events), and $=29.93$ days if restricted only for the red clump (RC) giant sources ($N = 96$ RC events). There are 20 long timescale events ($t_E \geq 100$ days) that suggest the presence of massive lenses (black holes) or disk-disk event. This work demonstrates that the VVV Survey is a powerful tool to detect intermediate/long timescale microlensing events in highly reddened areas, and it enables a number of future applications, from analyzing individual events to computing the statistics for the inner Galactic mass and kinematic distributions, in aid of future ground- and space-based experiments., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, published on The Astrophysical Journal Letters
