Abstract

We present a catalog of optical and infrared identifications (ID) of X-ray sources in the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Deep field detected with Chandra covering $\sim 0.34\,{\rm deg^{2}}$ with 0.5-2 keV flux limits ranging $\sim 2 \mathrm{-} 20\times 10^{-16}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}\,cm^{-2}}$. The optical/near-infrared counterparts of the X-ray sources are taken from our Hyper Suprime Cam (HSC)/Subaru and Wide-Field InfraRed Camera (WIRCam)/Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) data because these have much more accurate source positions due to their spatial resolution than that of {Chandra} and longer wavelength infrared data. We concentrate our identifications in the HSC $g$ band and WIRCam $K_{\rm s}$ band-based catalogs. To select the best counterpart, we utilize a novel extension of the likelihood-ratio (LR) analysis, where we use the X-ray flux as well as $g - K_{\rm s}$ colors to calculate the likelihood ratio. Spectroscopic and photometric redshifts of the counterparts are summarized. Also, simple X-ray spectroscopy is made on the sources with sufficient source counts. We present the resulting catalog in an electronic form. The main ID catalog contains 403 X-ray sources and includes X-ray fluxes, luminosities, $g$ and $K_{\rm s}$ band magnitudes, redshifts, and their sources, optical spectroscopic properties, as well as intrinsic absorption column densities and power-law indices from simple X-ray spectroscopy. The identified X-ray sources include 27 Milky-Way objects, 57 type I AGNs, 131 other AGNs, and 15 galaxies. The catalog serves as a basis for further investigations of the properties of the X-ray and near-infrared sources in this field. 4. On automatic extraction of on-street parking spaces using park-out events data

Abstract

This article proposes two different approaches to automatically create a map for valid on-street car parking spaces. For this, we use car sharing park-out events data. The first one uses spatial aggregation and the second a machine learning algorithm. For the former, we chose rasterization and road sectioning; for the latter we chose decision trees. We compare the results of these approaches and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, we show our results for a neighborhood in the city of Berlin and report a classification accuracy of 91.6\% on the original imbalanced data. Finally, we discuss further work; from gathering more data over a longer period of time to fitting spatial Gaussian densities to the data and the usage of apps for manual validation and annotation of parking spaces to improve ground truth data., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in IEEE COINS 2021: IEEE International Conference on Omni-layer Intelligent systems

5. A model for traffic incident prediction using emergency braking data

Abstract

This article presents a model for traffic incident prediction. Specifically, we address the fundamental problem of data scarcity in road traffic accident prediction by training our model on emergency braking events instead of accidents. Based on relevant risk factors for traffic accidents and corresponding data categories, we evaluate different options for preprocessing sparse data and different Machine Learning models. Furthermore, we present a prototype implementing a traffic incident prediction model for Germany based on emergency braking data from Mercedes-Benz vehicles as well as weather, traffic and road data, respectively. After model evaluation and optimisation, we found that a Random Forest model trained on artificially balanced (under-sampled) data provided the highest classification accuracy of 85% on the original imbalanced data. Finally, we present our conclusions and discuss further work; from gathering more data over a longer period of time to build stronger classification systems, to addition of internal factors such as the driver's visual and cognitive attention., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in the 32nd IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (https://2021.ieee-iv.org/)

Abstract

Using the high symmetry in the geometry of a smooth projective quadric, we construct effectively new families of smooth projective rational surfaces whose nef divisors are regular, and whose effective monoids are finitely generated by smooth projective rational curves of negative self-intersection. Furthermore, the Cox rings of these surfaces are finitely generated, the dimensions of their anticanonical complete linear systems are zero, and their nonzero nef divisors intersect positively the anticanonical ones. And in two special cases, we give efficient ways of describing any effective divisor class in terms of the given minimal generating sets for the effective monoids of these surfaces. The ground field of our varieties is algebraically closed of arbitrary characteristic.

Abstract

The aim is to give a geometric characterization of the finite generation of the Cox ring of anticanonical rational surfaces. This characterization is encoded in the finite generation of the effective monoid. Furthermore, we prove that in the case of a smooth projective rational surface having a negative multiple of its canonical divisor with only two linearly independent global sections (e.g., an elliptic rational surface), the finite generation is equivalent to the fact that there are only a finite number of smooth projective rational curves of self-intersection -1. The ground field is assumed to be algebraically closed of arbitrary characteristic.

Abstract

In April 2023, following the annual International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) ratification vote on newly proposed taxa, the phylum Negarnaviricota was amended and emended. The phylum was expanded by one new family, 14 new genera, and 140 new species. Two genera and 538 species were renamed. One species was moved, and four were abolished. This article presents the updated taxonomy of Negarnaviricota as now accepted by the ICTV

20. Optical analog of Rabi oscillation suppression due to atomic motion

Abstract

The Rabi oscillations of a two-level atom illuminated by a laser on resonance with the atomic transition may be suppressed by the atomic motion through averaging or filtering mechanisms. The optical analogs of these velocity effects are described. The two atomic levels correspond in the optical analogy to orthogonal polarizations of light and the Rabi oscillations to polarization oscillations in a medium which is optically active, naturally or due to a magnetic field. In the later case, the two orthogonal polarizations could be selected by choosing the orientation of the magnetic field, and one of them be filtered out. It is argued that the time-dependent optical polarization oscillations or their suppression are observable with current technology., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We put forward several inherently quantum characteristics of the dwell time, and propose an operational method to detect them. The quantum dwell time is pointed out to be a conserved quantity, totally bypassing Pauli's theorem. Furthermore, the quantum dwell time in a region for one dimensional motion is doubly degenerate. In presence of a potential barrier, the dwell time becomes bounded, unlike the classical quantity. By using off-resonance coupling to a laser we propose an operational method to measure the absorption by a complex potential, and thereby the average time spent by an incoming atom in the laser region., Comment: 4 pages, 2 eps figures

We model ideal arrival-time measurements for free quantum particles and for particles subject to an external interaction by means of a narrow and weak absorbing potential. This approach is related to the operational approach of measuring the first photon emitted from a two-level atom illuminated by a laser. By operator-normalizing the resulting time-of-arrival distribution, a distribution is obtained which for freely moving particles not only recovers the axiomatically derived distribution of Kijowski for states with purely positive momenta but is also applicable to general momentum components. For particles interacting with a square barrier the mean arrival time and corresponding ``tunneling time'' obtained at the transmission side of the barrier becomes independent of the barrier width (Hartman effect) for arbitrarily wide barriers, i.e., without the transition to the ultra-opaque, classical-like regime dominated by wave packet components above the barrier., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, RevTex

Atomic detection by fluorescence may fail because of reflection from the laser or transmission without excitation. The detection probability for a given velocity range may be improved by controlling the detuning and the spatial dependence of the laser intensity. Abstract

The well-known laser-induced Rabi oscillations of a two-level atom are shown to be suppressed under certain conditions when the atom is entering a laser-illuminated region. For temporal Rabi oscillations the effect has two regimes: classical-like, at intermediate atomic velocities, and quantum at low velocities, associated respectively with the formation of incoherent or coherent internal states of the atom in the laser region. In the low velocity regime the laser projects the atom onto a pure internal state that can be controlled by detuning. Abstract

Viroids are small, single-stranded, non-protein coding and circular RNAs able to infect host plants in the absence of any helper virus. They may elicit symptoms in their hosts, but the underlying molecular pathways are only partially known. Here we address the role of post-transcriptional RNA silencing in plant-viroid-interplay, with major emphasis on the involvement of this sequence-specific RNA degradation mechanism in both plant antiviroid defence and viroid pathogenesis. This review is a tribute to the memory of Dr. Ricardo Flores, who largely contributed to elucidate this and other molecular mechanisms involved in plant-viroid interactions.

Abstract

The late Early Pleistocene archaeological site of Fuente Nueva 3 (Orce, Guadix-Baza Depression, SE Spain), dated to ~1.4 Ma, provides evidence on the subsistence strategies of the first hominin population that dispersed in Western Europe. The site preserves Oldowan tool assemblages associated with abundant remains of large mammals. A small proportion of these remains show cut marks and percussion marks resulting from defleshing and bone fracturing, and a small proportion of bones also show tooth marks. Previous taphonomic studies of FN3 suggested that the hominins had secondary access to the prey leftovers abandoned by sabretooth cats and other primary predators. However, a recent analysis by Yravedra et al. (2021) of the frequency of anthropogenic marks and tooth marks has concluded that the hominins had primary access to the carcasses of a wide variety of ungulate prey, even though the frequency of evisceration marks is strikingly low. In this rebuttal, we analyse the patterns of bone preservation in FN3, which show that the exploitation of bone marrow by the hominins after hammerstone breakage was a usual activity at the site. Our study also reviews the evidence available on the lesser abilities of sabretooth cats for carcass processing compared to pantherine felids. This reinforces the hypothesis that primary predators provided the hominins the opportunity to scavenge sizeable chunks of meat and bone marrow of their prey carcasses before the arrival of hyaenas. Finally, we also provide new inferences on resource availability and competition intensity among the members of the carnivore guild in FN3, which reinforce our interpretation that a secondary access by the Oldowan hominins to the prey leftovers of sabretooth cats was an optimal foraging strategy in the Guadix
