Abstract

In this study, an environment‐friendly, energy‐saving, and useful synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs), titanium oxide (TiO2) NPs, and mixed Zn/TiOx‐NPs was achieved using underwater pulse discharge plasma. The obtained NPs were characterized by UV spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. In the discharge cell, the viscose patch is impregnated with ZnO, TiO2, and mixed Zn/TiOx‐NPs in a one‐step process. The adhesive patch is effective against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus albicans, and Bacillus subtilis. The viscose patch containing 0.22% Zn/TiOx‐NPs demonstrated the highest antimicrobial activity. These antimicrobial patches can be used to treat and cover wounds susceptible to infection. Abstract

The cell walls of three strains of Nocardiopsis albus subsp. albus have teichoic acids which are identical in structure and the cell wall of each strain has three teichoic acids, 3,5-poly(ribitol phosphate), 1,5-poly(ribitol phosphate) which have been observed for the first time in prokaryotes, and 1,3-poly(glycerol phosphate). Structure determination of the acids was done by chemical analysis and NMR-spectroscopy. Structure identities of the acid polymers from the three strains indicates their species-specificity.

Abstract

In this study, an underwater impulse discharge initiated in an aqueous suspension of a polylactide acid between silver rods is applied to produce silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and create a polymer nanocomposite. The spectral and energy characteristics of the discharge are obtained. The composites are characterized by methods of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Investigation of the formation of the composite of polylactic acid (PLA) with AgNP has been performed using the molecular dynamics method. The PLA/AgNPs composite films were effective against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Candida albicans, and thus may find future application in the food packaging area. Abstract

The teichoic acid from the cell wall of Actinomadura cremea INA 292 has an unusual structure, being a poly(galactosylglycerol phosphate) chain with glycerol phosphate groups. Monomeric units of 1-O,β-D-galactopyranosylglycerol monophosphate are joined in the polymer by phosphodiester links involving the glycerol C3 and the galactose C6 atoms. Approximately every second galactosyl substituent has a glycerol phosphate residue at its C3 atom. The teichoic acid structure was established by chemical analysis and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. There also is a peptidoglycan belonging to the A1γ type; as well as meso-2,6-diaminopimelic acid it contains small amounts of the LL form and glycine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The cell wall of Actinoplanes philippinesisVKM Ac-647 harbours several carbohydrate-containing anionic polymers. (1) The main polymer of the wall is of a poly(glycosylglycerol phosphate) nature. Its monomeric units — O-α-d-mannopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-d-galactopyranosyl-(1→1)-glycerol monophosphates — are connected by phosphodiester bonds involving the hydroxyl groups at glycerol C3 and galactose C6. There also are chains without mannosyl substitutents. The teichoic acid structure has been established by chemical analysis and with 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. This is the first finding of a teichoic acid with mannosyl residues in a bacterial cell wall. (2) The phosphorylated mannan contains mannose and 2-O-methylmannose. Its core chain has α-1,2; α-1,3; and α-1,6 substitutions as revealed by 13C NMR spectroscopy. The peptide unit of the peptidoglycan contains no l-alanine, instead of which position 1 is occupied by glycine; and diaminopimelic acid is represented, besides its meso- (or DD) form, by small amounts of its LL isomer.

Abstract

On the basis of NMR studies and analysis of the products of acid and alkaline hydrolyses the following structures were established for the repeating units of poly(arabitol phosphate) teichoic acid: α-6-deoxy-l-Talp-(1 → 3)-β-d-GIcpNAc-(1 → 2)-α-l-Rhap-(1 → 4(2)-d-Arabitol-PO4and β-d-GlcpNAc-(1 → 2)-α-l-Rhap-(1 → 4(2)-d-arabitol-PO4. The molar ratio of these units is about 1.2:1.0, respectively. Poly(arabitol phosphate) teichoic acid is here reported in bacterial cell walls for the first time.

Abstract

The major cell wall polymer of Kineosporia aurantiaca VKM Ac-702T a representative of the suborder Frankineae, is a galactomannan with a repeating unit of the following structure: -->3)-beta-D-Galp-(1-->6)-beta-D-Manp-(1-->4)-beta-D-Manp-(1-->3)-beta-D-Galp-(1-->4)-beta-D-Manp-(1-->4)-beta-D-Manp-(1--> that has not been reported so far. This was established using chemical degradation methods and NMR spectroscopy. The polysaccharide identified in the present study provides the second example of neutral galactomannans in actinomycete cell walls. The cell wall of K. aurantiaca VKM Ac-702T also contains a minor teichoic acid, viz., 1,3-poly(glycerol phosphate) partially substituted with alpha-glucosamine residues, only part of which are N-acetylated.
